O.k. I admit it, I don't know whats gotten into me this week, but, I've been NICE to people! Bought gear for a couple of newbies on Hinde and Lionna, gave away spell books to a friend in need of adena and *bows head mumbling* I took my lowbie elfie and spent an hour just killing gremlins and left the adena laying there. As a dwarf this goes against every principal I live for!!! Even my bf checked my forehead to see if I was getting sick!

I had taken a break from even talking to the newbies (newbier than me, that is).....and I missed it. I like their questions and I like their enthusiasm.
Honestly, a bit over a year ago a couple folks helped me when I thought I was going to quit. I still remember it clearly.
From time to time since then I also pick a new player to give some assistance to....I even have a "newbie gift pack" I give them.
though I had stopped for awhile I found that I missed it. Sure enough, the last 2 I spoke with were very promising new players (hiya Halygar and Valdrakir).
I sort of feel (in a mushy sort of way) like I'm passing along the help that was giving to me.
It's kinda fun!!!!!
All that being said? I can't imagine a DWARF doing it!
About once a month i return to TI and if anyone is there that is a total newb i buy them top Ng and give them about 100k, or w/e i can afford after that. I kinda like to think of it as a return home. (:
that newbie care package is a wonderful idea, which I use regularly myself 8) . I go back to ti once a week a chat up new players ( easy to see most times from their speach and equipment ). I then explain to them alot of the things about the game and answer their questions. For the ones that seem most eager about the game I upgrade their equipment and give them a few hundred kk adena. Just to get them going.
Sometimes I run into a new d grader which I give a good weapon also.
Once I met some a grade while I was on ti and we had an assembly just outside of town. It was almost like a classroom. Me and the a grade was standing up. talking and demonstrating, and 5 new people was sitting on the ground, just besides and asked us questions, lol.
I like to feel that I am passing on the good start someone was nice enough to give me. On my very very first char ( a warrior on hindesmith I think ) I was hunting spiders on ti when some guy on a strider came up to me and dropped 500k on the ground and wished me good luck in the game.
I tell all the people that I help, that I hope they will do the same when they get higher in levels.
I go back to TI and Gludin every now and again. Last time though, I gave someone armor, a top NG weapon, 100k adena, SE buffs and a week later they removed me from their friendslist. It's like ohhhh kay.

I would think ppl that "give away" are not making anyone a favor and should reroll life. But a forum of a game is not a good place to have a good dissc.
Was worth almost double that when I made it, has it really come down so much? I gave it to a friend I have known since OB who needed the set for his Subclass, since it was no further use to me, quitting the game and all. If I ever do come back properly it will be to Lionna, which means my equipment on Dev is useless to me.

I think somebody has some jealousy issues they need to resolve.
Personally I don't like to help 'random newbies' as, like some already said, they usually turn out to be alts anyways. What I do however, is help our clannies and academy members get what they need. Handing out full items isn't the best way IMO, helping them craft the needed items is much more rewarding and lets them feel they have contributed something too.
Though sometimes I just ask them to gather the materials they can and then exchange them for a full item :P
Best help you can give a newbie isn't a bit of gear but some of your time to explain fishing, manoring, or other stuff like that. I'll still do it occasionally, but not usually, since most newbies seem to miraculously have no money trouble anyhow.
There are a tons of guides to explain the different systems in game.If someone cant be bothered reading them because its faster for someone to explain it to them...well i wont bother with those ppl either.

Yep.
That is why i stopped helping new people.
I have to say that that's an issue with helping new people.
I know that personally , I want to give them a significant boost so that they can have an easier time of it. However, I think more often than not, the "gift" goes to waste as they either react how this other person did or they just try the game out for a week and quit.
I only know of one person I helped who not only stayed with the game but has been Hero many times.
another stayed with the game for a little bit, quit, came back and I think quit again.
So it really is a sort of "crap shoot" whether or not the gesture will really help the player in the long run.
Each time I sell an OE weapon, I'll do something crazy. A couple of weekends ago, I cleaned out my entire clan WH, including A and some S grade mats, various level full armor and weapons, so on and so forth.
The funniest time. . . at least funny to me... was when I went to DE Village and gave a newbie mystic a +5 SOES. (I received the SOES as part of a weapons sale, so it cost me nothing.) The newb pm'ed me not 15 minutes later and told me that he/she wanted to give the SOES back, because it didn't work. LOL.
I replied with 3 choices: [1] Keep it until B grade; [2] Give it to someone else; or [3] run/SOE/'port to either Giran, Dion or the Monster Track and sell it...but only after taking several offers first. I strongly advised doing the third, even if it meant running the entire way to Giran. (What, did I fail to mention the GK quest that the newbie could have undertaken to port to Giran? Shame on me!)
An hour later, I got another PM from the newb, telling me that he/she was somewhere in between Gludio and Dion. He/she had ran the entire way -- almost died twice -- but wasn't going to give up. Another half hour or so later I received a final PM from him/her thanking me profusely. Evidently the newb finally found out that what the SOES was worth.
Nice gestures happen at much higher levels too (although not always for a good reason)
I had a really good friend in game who I levelled my main with (Orc as was). He had to leave game at the point where we were starting to save for A grade and struggling badly. He have a main and several reasonable level characters besides.
Just before he left he gave me everything he had, armor, mats, jewels, adena from all his characters. Because of that I was able to progress in game and have managed ever since.
It was one of the saddest moments I have had in game and one of the few times that I wished our characters had a 'hug' emote.
The issue isn't "giving stuff to newbies". The issues is providing a welcome and someone they can actually talk to.
It's true that some so-called 'newbies' are just alts--but it's also true that many of them who post and make an effort to say hi really ARE new players to our game.
Showing up to say "hello", answering their questions about "how do I pm?" or "how do I invite someone to friends list?" or "what's a 'recommendation' for" is not ruining their learning curve.
Likewise a "package of 20 soe's, 10 haste pots, 50 healing pots, a couple NG charm scrolls, etc." isn't propelling them to D-grade.
It's just a thoughtful way to say "hello" and "give me a shout if you have a question".
It's surprising the character you can discover. Many will maintain contact throughout their leveling (which is always neat to see when it happens) and others even refuse the items declaring they want to "do things on their own"!! :)
Perhaps it's only those of us who have actually leveled our toons who appreciate why it might be fun to assist someone else during that first 40 levels.
The fact is that most people load the game and begin to play for a bit BEFORE they realize the complexity. Even if they read everything they can find for the next month they will still have questions.
Once again the 'age-old argument' rears its ugly head in this post. Is it better to have a bogus pvp count of 3000 and be a subclassed botter or is it better to have 100 people who genuinely like you regardless of your lack of uberness?
I only know the answer to this for myself.

Honestly, I don't know who or what contributed to making you so jaded and cynical but I can't fault you for feeling that way. Let me just say that, in my experience, most new players don't do much in the way of advance scouting of a game. They just log in and play. It's not how I go about it, but I can't say I'm the typical new player (far from it).

Very astute observation. I'd go so far as to say that if many people learned about the game's complexity prior to playing, they wouldn't play at all. L2 isn't exactly the mainstream choice, after all. A lot of a new player's learning will typically come at or really close to D grade. I've run into lots of folks in the mid 20s who are in academies and have no idea what Clan Oath is.
But I will say that the absolutely most help I've received has been from people who constantly tell me stuff like "Don't outlevel your bank account" and "Spend time making money or you'll regret it". Yes, someone had to explain the finer points of the manor system to me, even though I had read several guides on it prior to doing it. It's like the difference between book knowledge and practical knowledge. I could read books on a variety of subjects but that wouldn't make me even competent at doing those things. Telling someone to 'buy low and sell high' does little good unless you give them an idea of what they might be able to do that with (Consumables are better to start off with than armor and weapons, for example. Obvious to me, but I've been playing the market in MMOs for a decade. Expecting everyone else to know that isn't very realistic). This game has A LOT of consumables so someone telling me, "Start with shots" was a HUGE help.
The old Chinese proverb applies here though: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
Jaded and cynical....Yeah when you understand that 80% (more like 99) of the playerbase just cheats you get REALLLY edgy.I hate it when ppl come to me and ask smtn thats already been explained in this sites library.
Ppl are just too lazy to read is my guess :/
Or outright stupid-how do i get off TI?Wheres the WH?
I dont mind if someone asks about the curent manor status-what to buy-where its best to seed etc.
As a player who has been playing for a couple of weeks I want to say thank you to all of you that help out beginners. I had a more experienced player hand me a falcion, bone armor, and bone shield. What a difference compared to the squire sword that I was using at the time.
He(the character was male) then took the time to warn me about the money that would be needed. He reccomended trying multiple melee classes and passing the armor and weapons to each character to build my bank roll.
Earlier this week my neighbors son lent me a decent d grade weapon to level with(In return I'm going to help him put on a new deck this summer, which I would have helped with anyway). I now have a lvl 29 human warrior, A lvl 23 orc raider, and a 15 DE fighter. I am going to return it once I hit c grade.
Enough rambling from someone new and excited about the game.
You know what, Lisail? I totally agree with you. But if you've played other MMOs, you know that this isn't just an L2 thing. Many people are just flat-out lazy and won't do any legwork or research of any kind on their own. The search function on this (and every other MMO's) forum is so neglected it's sad. Or so it seems. I have some friends who staunchly believe that checking sites outside of the game means the game's design is flawed because everything should be available for reference ingame. If that's not the biggest load of ****, I dunno what is. "I don't want to have to consult spoiler sites to learn how to play the game" and yet they'll ask ME the questions that the so-called spoiler sites have complete rundowns on.
I agree with Raxer though. To all those folks who choose to help out those new players who spawn in their newbie village with no idea of what to do from a big picture standpoint, thank you. Many times, it's those experiences that hook a player and turn a "I'll just try the free trial" into a paying sub.
I've rarely ever given any adena or items to any new player. I think that a new player needs to know just how tough this game, in comparison to other games, is. By giving them top lvl gear for their grade, they just get spoiled and end up doing the unmentionable at higher lvls because they get accustomed to top gear.
I have spent years in this game helping low lvls. It's the biggest reason why I am so "low" lvl compared to others who have played continuously as I have since OB. What I do give to new players is my time. I would spend hours just following them around OOP and doing CC and buffing. On occasion I'd have to step in and drop some mobs before a player got dropped, or even tank on occasion.
I still don't think giving new players top lvl gear helps in the end, especially the way the game is set up now for new players, and even alts. There have been more rerolls/alts than new players for a couple of years now, enough that I have stopped helping, also, herbs and newbie buffs are better than mine.
I do wish more people would join the game and that higher lvls would give the gift of their time and not gear, but oh well, that's not everyone's cup of tea. It's nice to know some people like to help the new players. :)
