For those who r runing L2 on Overlocked CPU/v-card

do you have problem with L2 runs even slower on overclocked CPU or video card ?

L2 runs slower if I overclock my CPU from 3.2g to 3.4g OR my video card by 15% performance...

I dont have any other game to test further more so I dont know if it was only L2 or pretty much all games (which means it could be my problem, not L2). but it seems to be stable when I test my overclocked gears with 3DMax.

added: P4 3.2g northwood 512k and Radeon 9600pro 256mb.

thx
I am currently running an OCed Barton 2600+ 1.9ghz at 2.3ghz. L2's performance is TONS better!

Your problem is probably your stability.

Download Prime95 and run the torture test for at least 6 hours without errors. If that fails run Memtest and see if it is your memory that is having problems with your OCed CPU. If it is your memory that is having problems...well just run those tests and let me know.

3Dmark is basically for benchmarking and really won't tell you if your CPU is "stable" or if your memory is "stable."

L2 should defiantly run better with an OCed system that is stable, along with everything else. Overclocking correctly increases preformance, it doesn't reduce it.

Hope this helps you out. But yes, run prime95, use the blend or whatever torture test setting.

Both these programs are free.

Edit: Usually overclocking your video card will result in artifacts showing up. My suggestion, is to return your video card back to its original settings and first get your CPU stable.

Also to tell you the truth, Overclocking a ATI 9600 256mb card really isn't going to give you much more performance in L2. If you want something better for rendering your graphics just pick up a Nvidia 6600GT or some card like that. But basically that 9600 from previous experience will probably do an OK job for L2. L2 is mainly a CPU and RAM hog...if you want increased performance you should worry about this aspect of your PC.

Also don't be afraid of adding 15% more to that Vid card (as long as u aren't getting artifacts), but don't expect to see a large difference in actual performance. I OCed my 9600 256MB for about a month or so before just upgrading to the Nvidia 6600GT.

Another very important thing, if you overclock your FSB on your CPU make sure you have your AGP locked at 66mhz.
hey mait, thx a ton for your help.. how much difference did u get by upgrading from 9600pro to 6600gt ?

thx
Quite a bit actually. Even though the 6600GT only has 128MB of memory that memory is about 3x faster than the 9600pro, plus I think the overall chip architecture is much more advanced.

With L2, I really didn't notice much of a difference actually until it came to sieges or had to load large populations like Giran. Before I had to play L2 on siege day in basically no graphics mode at about 12FPS (lol), now depending on the siege I can usually play in medium to just above medium graphics at above 30FPS (usually). In large scale pvp of lets say 20-30 people I can play with graphics maxed.

If I am not mistaken the 9600pro is 325Mhz core GPU clock or somewhere near that (stock), and the 6600GT is about 500Mhz. Also mem speed for 6600GT is roughly 1000Mhz, and I can't recall the 9600 but I know it wasn't even close. Not to mention the 6600GT is pretty good at OCing also, could defiantly boost an extra 50 to 100Mhz out of there depending on the case temperature. Maybe even more, depending on how cool you can keep the card.

Before if I played F.E.A.R. I could only play in 800x600 with low graphics. Just with the card upgrade alone I could play at 1024x768 with medium to high graphics (with stock card speeds).

So basically you won't notice a large difference in L2 until you get into pretty intensive graphic rendering or if your still stuck playing in 800x600 resolution. You can definitely obtain higher resolutions with the 6600GT, as long as your monitor supports them.

The biggest gripe I had with the 6600GT was finding drivers that actually worked really nice with the card. After some searching tho, I found the the 78.05 Beta drivers from nzone.com which worked great!

Also you can get the card brand new for about $100 or so from ebay, maybe even cheaper if your lucky. You can also find used ones from about $70-$90. On top of this you can probably sell your 9600 for about $30 to $40, thus making your video card upgrade even cheaper.
thx again for your info..I was looking at buy.com..how about 7600gt 256mb ? would u recommend that card ?
Since someone already made this and its point less to make another.
Should I overclock my 6800 GT NVIDIA card (AGP)?
I get around 40-60 Frames and it sometimes jumps to 10frames and sits there for a bit.
I'm using Ntuner but not noticing much from it :\

I'm running low/medium settings (2x and 4x don't mess with my frames) 1440x900
The only 6600 card for AGP that I see on buy.com is the LE version. Not to sure about that version, but it isn't the same as the GT. If I remember correctly the core speed of a LE is only
about 300Mhz and it only has a Memory speed of 400. This card is probably roughly the same is that 9600pro that you got. If I am seeing the same card that you are seeing, I wouldn't get it. Make sure it is a GT. Most GT models are just 128mb of memory, it is VERY rare to get one that has 256mb.

Here is a 6600GT (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143083) from newegg. It already comes slightly overclocked, but I am not too sure how good the manufacturer is (BFG). My card is a eVGA card, but newegg doesn't offer them. This is the one you will be looking for, or a card of the same likeness from a different manufacture. According to customer reviews either people are really happy with it, or it arrived DoA. Either way, newegg has great customer support while it is under newegg warranty, but on which 6600GT you buy that is completely up to you. All manufacturers are not equal, but imho the card's specs look good at least, and the price isn't bad.

And to Legeki...when are you getting this 10FPS? That could be a problem with memory trying to load people more than the graphics card. Why I say this is, if you usually get OK frame rates, and then it suddenly drops to low frame rates, compared to you getting low frame rates all the time, my guess is that your memory is full and you are loading from your hard drive into memory or something of the sort when your FPS drops as low as you describe for just those few minutes.

If you overclock your card a little bit though, it might be possible to run at medium to high settings, instead of low to medium. How much memory do you have, and what is your memory speed? Also what is your CPU speed? Also do you know the temps that your card is running at? In order to overclock you can't be running to hot or you will get artifacts and whatnot.
one more question my friend:

couple weeks ago I borrowed a x1950pro 512mb from my friend and it worked PERFECTLY until I teleport from one place to another.

say, I was having 50ish FPS in Aden GK, then it dropped to 17 FPS after I teleported to Goddard and it remained the same until I restarted the game then get back to 50ish FPS.

almost the same thing happens in Giran...I was having nice 50ish at aden, dropped to 8-12 fps while I was shopping in giran and remained 10-17 even after I have gone back to aden and I had to restart the game, in some case, I had to restart my computer to get back to normal FPS..

I've asked about it in the tech section and folks are saying that it's a "well-known" " memory leak" issue of L2...

what's your thought ? thx
memory leak. nothing you can really do about it
When I'm usually in a town/city or around one.
Sometimes it depends on which way I'm looking.

i never understand people with overclocking
CPU and Video card perform just better if you dont overclock your system sinds overclocking gives more heat witch in turn brings more Resistance to your stuff in turn wich lowers your Performs

lowering the overlocking have a positive effect on the brain power of your computer sinds temperature gets lower so your cpu's can take more power to process. =) witch boost efficentcy and stability
Yeah, that does sound like a memory leak problem. I don't have the problem, but I am not sure how you can fix it because I never really looked into it since it didn't effect me. Sorry. :( Just probably depends on the video card since it only seemed to happen with the x1950pro that you borrowed.

Legeki, I have no idea then, it seems like you have enough memory. Maybe your memory is speed is too low and you are bottlenecking system performance. Do you know the speed rating for your memory and the FSB that your CPU is currently running at? If everything seems fine in that department, I am not sure. I mean you could always try OCing your video card slowly until it gets too hot. Don't want your stuff to get too hot.

There is also a possibility it is your internet? But I am doubting that since I am guessing you at least have some sort of decent broadband.
-------
Abisha, you are both right and wrong in your statement. High amounts of heat will destroy your equipment and reduce it's performance, but if you keep the heat in at a safe temperature and crank up the speed you are obviously going to improve performance.

Before I enhanced cooling to my system, at normal stock speeds my CPU ran to about 60 degrees (under full load) Celsius and my CPU has a heat threshold of 85 degrees Celsius. I figure as long as it stays under 65 degrees under full load I am happy with it. Now with enhanced airflow I am about 59 degrees (under full load, doesn't even get that hot when playing l2), thus being cooler and faster than I once was at stock speeds. It is running somewhat hot (but within safe operating temps) , but it is stable and performance is boosted. There is no point of having an unstable overclocked system that runs worse than at stock speeds. Not to mention on a CPU heat only really increases when you increase your V.core, otherwise your not really going to see a difference in heat. Usually you can increase your CPU speed by 100-200mhz without even seeing a change in heat, but seeing a small change in performance.

Reducing the speed of your equipment will result in slower performance but less heat will be generated. Which is good if you are running uber hot for some reason at like 60- degrees at idle and somewhere around 70-75 at full load (AMD Athlon, other cpu's recommended heat differ). You would be better off actually fixing the problem tho and cooling your parts correctly.

The point is, CPUs are designed to run within a certain degree of temperature. No matter, if you are within that temperature you are going to get about the same performance, if you are below it you aren't going to notice a large difference, but if you are on the upper end of the temperature charts or even above the threshold (DON'T DO THAT) you will either blow up your CPU or you will have freezes, lockups, restarts, lower performance, etc.

The difference I noticed from having a 1.9ghz processor with 333FSB to a 2.3ghz processor with 400FSB was HUGE! Performance skyrocketed when playing games and whatnot. What did it cost me? Roughly $15-$20 (for extra case fans, and some high quality heat compound) which is tons cheaper than getting a new CPU with those ratings.
The only thing I can really see from there, is that your memory is slower than your CPU can support. You are using DDR 2700 RAM instead of 3200 RAM. Well actually you are using 1 stick of DDR 3200 but it will only run at 2700 because you have two sticks of those. Also since you have 3 sticks, which I overlooked before you can't run in dual channel mode which decreases speed performance about 15%. This will hurt your performance a little bit, but with 1.5gb of RAM, I still don't see why you would have problems loading large amounts of people in Lineage II, since you say it usually happens around towns.

Which can be expensive, the best idea I could have would be getting 2x1GB sticks of DDR 3200 RAM and selling off your other sticks; this is if you mobo supports dual channel (which I am sure it probably does, but double check.) This may not even be the source of your problem tho...and I would hate for you to spend all that cash on something that really may not help you out. It is sorta a shot in the dark. Granted having the 2GB of RAM you would see performance increases anyway.

Before you do this though, download Memtest and run that for a couple hours. See if your memory gets any errors. If not at least you know your memory is good, although it is slower than your CPU can definitely handle. There may be a problem with information being written to your memory, and memtest would detect this.
Mines one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...amp;x=0&y=0 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=lan party&x=0&y=0) motherboards

They all say yes to Dual Channel

I've done the memtest yesterday and got 0 errors.
I think I'm going to order http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820609049 and leave the other 3200 in.

Should I try taking out the 3200 and leaving the two 2700 in and seeing how the performance is?
I took out the 3200 stick and I'm about to go see if it helped by taking it out.

I didn't notice anything at all (still had the low fps). So I'm putting the 3200 back in.

I'll just overclock the next pc I make :\
Yeah I think you will actually get more performance with 1.5gb of ram. It is the 2700 that is bottlenecking your system anyway, well the only thing I can see anyway from the specs.

With your specs though, I really think l2 should run fine... It could be a multitude of things, but at least now you know it really isn't your RAM.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.
