NOTE: NcSoft owns two of the top 5 titles !!!! Lineage 2 being 3rd.

Massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) are growing in popularity, with the market in the West now worth more than $1bn (£511m). But which are the most popular? These are the five MMOGs with the highest number of subscribers worldwide, according to MMOGchart.com.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT

World of Warcraft is the world's biggest MMOG

Since launching in the US in 2004, Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft has become the most world's popular MMOG.

It is available in seven languages and has more than 8 million subscribers.

The game takes place in the world of Azeroth where players can choose to from a range of races and classes as their in-game character, or avatar.

Players perform quests within the game world to earn money, items and experience which improves their skill and power levels.

While early game quests can be completed by a single player, more advanced quests require player to work together in teams of up to five.

These kind of team activities take place in "instance dungeons", multiple copies of in-game locations where players can carry out quests without other players intruding.

LINEAGE
Lineage was the first MMOG from South Korean publisher NCsoft, released in 1998.

The game is a medieval fantasy based on a series of South Korean comic books which follow the quest by a dispossessed prince to reclaim his throne.

Lineage has enjoyed huge popularity in South Korea and other oriental countries, with more than three million subscribers worldwide, according to NCsoft.

LINEAGE II

Dragons can be tamed in Lineage II

The sequel to Lineage was released in South Korea in 2003 and has more than one million subscribers.

Lineage II expands on its predecessor's "taming" system. which allows players to domesticate non-player characters (NPC) animals such as dogs, wolves and dragons, and to raise them as pets.

NCsoft releases regular game expansion packs, or "chronicles", free-to-subscriber downloads which introduce new storylines, quests and game areas.

RUNESCAPE
Runescape from UK developer Jagex has nearly one million subscribers, although a free version of the game is available, supported by in-game advertising.

The game was created by brothers Andrew and Paul Gower and released to the public in 2001, originally operating out a bedroom in their parents' home.

The game is set in the fantasy world of Gielinor which is inhabited by players and NPCs.

Players work their way through increasingly difficult quests to improve their skills levels and earn rewards.

FINAL FANTASY XI

The character Cid appears in many Final Fantasy games

Final Fantasy XI (FFXI) is an online instalment of the multimillion-selling Final Fantasy franchise.

It was released for PC and PlayStation2 (PS2) platforms in Japan in 2002.

FFXI is the first MMOG to support simultaneous multiplayer gaming across different platforms, meaning players using PC, PS2 and Xbox 360 can all play together online in the same game.

More than 500,000 people have subscribed to the game, according to its publisher Square Enix.
hmm i thought guild wars was one of the top 5... After the release i kept seeing advertisements for it stating it was #1.. Oh well cool artical.

Yeah, I did too. Maybe they are no coutning GW as it does offer a different sort of gameplay.
problem is, i know more people that play runescape or ffxi than l1/l2 players :/
run-escape defines pretty well the game... when you see the graphics, that's exactly what you want to do!
I don't know what can lure a player into it beside the free offer...
Runescape is actually fun in some cases. I'd much rather have a deep game with crap graphics, than a great looking game with awful gameplay. *Wait a second....*

Thats why I continued to play Lineage 1, two years after L2 was released. It was and still is superior to L2 in many aspects (aside from graphics) imo. The customer service is awsome also. I remember at one time they changed the loot system to where it always dropped instead of autoloot, people FREAKED and flooded the boards with complaints. It was changed back to autoloot within a week, lol.

Point Being:
Great graphics...hmpf, who needs em when you got a great game.
lineage 1 was the first actually, not ffxi. l1 is (probably still is) pc and mac.

What?

If I want a game that doesn't look spectacular, no MMO can compete with a message board or pen and paper system. Therefore... eh. :p

I second that comment. P.S. <3 lineage 1 I miss my COI Q_Q But i quit cause a "friend" stole my +9 yumi back in the day..
"FFXI is the first MMOG to support simultaneous multiplayer gaming across different platforms, meaning players using PC, PS2 and Xbox 360 can all play together online in the same game. "

i said thats wrong because L1 came out first and it was for both pc and mac. therefore, first " simultaneous multiplayer gaming across different platforms" goes to L1.
Mac and PC count as computers. They're meaning Computer (PC in this case), Xbox, and PS2 as multi-platform. They even clarify it in their article.
.. lol

i think this list is like an "all time total sales" list so guild wars might not be at the top of this list but probably antother one
It seems strange to me that with the rise in popularity of online MMO games, that the console systems are lagging behind. The new PS3 for instance can play games online but only with a maximum of 40 players.

Not exactly sure how Playstation Home works on the PS3, gonna bet it's Region-based. But techincally that's an MMORPG built into every PS3 console you can play for free with a lot more than 40 people. :P

Search Playstaion Home on YT and you'll see some cool vids of it. Looks like a SecondLife or something of that nature. You can unlock furniture for your home or buy new outfits etc. Not my particular type of game but looking at the popularity of SecondLife I bet it gets a few hardcore fans that go months without even buying a real PS3 game.

.. lol

If ya say so bud. :D

You could play MUD1 (http://www.british-legends.com/) on a multitude of platforms ... back in 1978.

Lol, yeah I remember playing a few of those around the mid to late-90's. Couldn't afford to pay subscription fees for EQ. :D Good times.
I still play a few, actually.
