Trial of the Scholar: Broken?

Player Questions Started Last reply 44 posts
I've been here since the server has come up trying to get Scripture Chapter 4 off the Grandis and I have gone through over 1.5k DBSpS without a drop. Almost 2 hours of killing them non-stop, and they give [censored] XP. Is this quest broken or something? Not that I care since I'm not broke and won't afford to be able to kill the other mobs (that are yellow-red to a level 35 in this SOLO QUEST) that need to be killed. Gee Thanks.

I'm looking forward to wasting ~200 MB a mob in Ivory Tower after this FINALLY drops just to kill one gargoyle (the shackles were beyond repulsive). L2 quests are the dumbest things I've ever seen, just pure stupidity...
not broken. most people got it on first kill.

make sure you talked to whats-his-face in the wastelands tho first. if you think you did, do it again.

i did that one a few times, you just cant skip that step.
yey, server down!
Make sure you also go to Stratics Quest guide. Like Spudnik says, seems you missed a step, because I also got that right away.

The "what's-his-face" he is referring to is Caspian out by the Ant Nest.
ah, thanks. i am no good with names.

The "what's-his-face" he is referring to is Caspian out by the Ant Nest.

It's Casian, and he's a bastard.
Don't you love class change quests?

By the way, did you say the mobs are yellow-pink-red to you??? I hate to say it, but that doesn't sound right. None of the class change quests pit you against mobs or even quest mobs that are higher than white to you.
Nope, u can skip step to talk to casian, the quest is just STUPID cause it tells you to hunt for the 4th chapter when in actuality you don't get it until you talk to casian AGAIN and then hunt MORE MOBS for the 4th chapter. NCSoft sux at quest design...

But that's a no brainer.
Incorrect :) I'm doing the level 35 quest at 37. At level 36 it made me goto IT to kill Shackles, and they were as deep a red as they could be. I had to spam Aura Burn on them and chain B2M every few mobs while a high level Sorc clannie healed me with his nuker Heals.

Grandis in Death Pass are yellow to me at 37, all of them.

I'm sure the Madussas will be at least yellow, and the gargoyles in the pit in IT will be at least pink, cause they were deep red 1 level ago.

Delevel and go check for yourself, if you don't believe me.

In fact, I'll post screenshots when I run to that area again, in a few minutes.

Ciao.
I don't think that's always true, I remember doing some of the appropriate level for my EE and SH and the mobs were red, the umm... shackles in particular.
I stand corrected.
Madusa = Green
Enchanted Gargoyles (IT Pit) = Pink

Good thing they have low fire resist, cause they were hitting me for 184+

And the Fettered Souls suck, Lol, with their uber run and attack speed. Thx Slow :)

Be happy that they changed it so that there aren't nearly as many of them and they are no longer aggro.

Ahhhh, the good old days!

I agree this quest is poorly written. I wasted 40 minutes on this waiting for more parts of scripture to drop
Scholar is probably the worst quest I've ever had to do.

The dwarf ones are right up there too but only because the quest log doesn't update for like 10 steps at a time. It'll still show step 3 status when you are 5 steps past that.
I think it's chapter three from the Grandis, chapter 4 comes from Casian himself.

Something I never realised the other day that someone else pointed out was that if you wait to do your class change until you are level 40 and can afford it, you will then have C grade masteries and can use armor and weapons of that grade. I'm working through this class change at the moment and it passes quickly with this setup.

This is what I always do. The quests are still mind-numbing, but killing the mobs is much easier.
Well, Thankfully I finished it and am about halfway done wiht the 37 quest. Had to get level 38 before it would let me continue. Can't wait til I finish this one cause the last one is easy, and I can rest assured and just wait until level 40 to do it. Hopefully I muster up the motivation to grind to level 39 tonight (99.53% to go whee!).

This quest really messed me up, because it totally threw my finances out of whack.
Yep, 3 is from the grandis, 4 is from Casian, Valkon gives you 2 and 1 is from Raut.
I recommend you grind just outside of Hunters Village on the orcs and bugbears. I went there with a boxed EO and it flew by.

This may work well if you are rerolling and have and/or have another toon that can actually afford the gear, but for someone who is actually just starting the game - a C grade weapon alone is worth more than a full set of top D grade gear + weapon and maybe jewels too (at least on my server). Make it sound so easy. I'm totally convinced that Adena is the real XP of the game, LMAO - the single most important thing in this game.

A new player will not even have Top D Grade gear by the time he is level 40, unless he deleveled a few times to accumulate it (and he wouldn't do that cause he's new and wouldn't wanna spend more time grinding out the same levels over and over esp pre-40). They don't over-enchant their top D grade weapon because after +3 they can lose it, and that's > 2mil down the drain. A newbie doing everything on his own will have a much harder time doing things than I would.

And you're talking about newbies getting C grade gear as soon as they level to 40 so they can do their class change quest easier?

Newbie as in new character of veteran player, or newbie as in new player who eBays adena to make the game easier?

I've played MMO's with much better drop rates on rare items and it was still next to impossible to accumulate so much income in such a short period of time, unless you deliberately deleveled or slowed your own grinding experience to a halt (to farm quests, etc. which I refuse to do cause it's monotanous)...

P.S. That's not even taking into account other income drains like the occassional port, SS/SpS, Scrolls of Escape/Recovery. The less money you have, the more money you end up spending because the more trips you have to make to town (due to low availability of supplies and having to restock more often).

I mourn for people who save ash by running everywhere (especially as a nuker). I've run from Dion to Elven Village to Dion to Elven Village to Dark Elf Village to Dion to Oren and I feel like going to the psychiatrist atm.

i afforded Top D at lvl 15. top C at lvl 25. B grade before i hit C grade.

if you DONT hit the 50m mark in petty cash around lvl 40, you need some money making help. may be try

for a handful of tips on doing exactly as i did.

Don't use caps, no one else is yelling. And FTR, I've read all of those posts. I'm currently on page 316 of the general forum, and I've read everythread on every page. I do this the entire day while I play the game.

It's still not absolutely viable for a toon to make money and still progress. New players want to progress their characters, not sit in Dion/Giran/Aden selling things all day. Most of those toons are a second boxxed Dorf/alt anyways. It's incredibly difficult to actually progress your toon and be profitable at the same time. By the admission of many in the forum, you have to basically choose between XP and Adena farming when you play.

That, IMO, is not fun (and somewhat suspect, but I'm not going to go there).

I don't care about farming X amounts of Adena to get X weapon. This thread is about a quset that is, IMO, somewhat broken by design (both in script and in PvE levels IRT mobs that you have to kill). I cannot utilize any C grade armor at level 36 (when you can finish this quest), so I really don't care about how to make cash when I'm trying to finish this quest. I have have more Adena than Bill Gates has USD and I'll still be a gimp wizard in Top D gear fighting mobs that can slaughter me in a few seconds (con red).

The quest is supposed to be balanced to began at level 35 and end at 36, that has nothing to do with C grade gear. What is wrong with playing the game as it (at least seemed to be) intended. And I rather do the quests as they come up than grind and run around farming cash for more gear (which I *shouldn't* need). I'm not saying the quest should be incredibly easy, I'm just saying that it should be doable by anyone at the appropriate levels with *avarage* gear/weapons. Do you disagree?

If expect all L2 players to be Economic Analysts and assume that they need "help" making money because they choose to spend their time actually getting XP than farming cash like a Korean/Chinese than you have more problems than me. I wasn't complaining about my lack of cash, only saying that no new player who plays a standard amount of time for a normal player (4-5 hours a day tops for most people I know that play MMOs regularly) is going to want to stop their grind to farm cash - and then grind more levels so that they can finish a quest that is intended for players 4-5 levels lower than them without dying multiple times. Those mobs are not raid bosses. Do you see my point?

Sorry, but my job is in the real world.

Not the only red mobs in this quest. At 37 (quest can be completed at 36) the gargoyles in the pit were also red (like many of the other things there). They aren't agro but they are fast enough and hit for almost 200 (crits are nasty). The eyes in the pit are agro IIRC and nuke you for over 300 (and they seem to have 2-3x HP).

It's not about the shackles, it's about the quest in general.

I'm not a fan of alts - I usually just make my toon and play him (and nothing else). If the game gets boring to the point that I'm making an alt I can only assume I'll end up making another one. Time for another game at that point IMO.
Has anyone had any further problems with this quest? A friend of mine is partway through, has received the Mark from Jurek and has been told to go see Mirien back in Dion. Mirien, unfortunately, tells him to sod off. He has tried relogging, going back to Jurek incase something was missed, beating the crap out of both. Any similar problems?
i personally made all that money while i was at work. my dorf sits in giran and i go to work. i have two accounts, so they both sit there. the quests ive done, the events ive played, the books ive gotten as drops, all sold and made my initial fortune on devianne. steadily i got to know players from accross the boards on all servers and was one day prompted to switch to lionna, where my current mains are.

i did the same thing; sell what i get during the day, play during the night.

im not even 5x on lionna but i have made enough now for all the B gear for 2 toons (buffer and summoner main) and still have a fortune left over.

the money is there to be had, obtaining it is the easy part. keeping it is the hard part.

you can do the quests at their respective levels. i have nothing against that. nobody does. the vast community that have done that road the hundreds of times collectively, have all said it is easier by far to do it in C gear, at level 40.

do as you wish, i gave you the quest help that i could give; if you choose to do the next quest at 37, by all means, and godspeed.
Did he skip any steps?
Is he the right level? Sometimes you can't finish a quest until you gain a level.

300 (and they seem to have 2-3x HP)

They are single HP.

Most of the quests are designed to require a party on a young server, or help from a higher level friend on an old server. Both works marvellously.

I'm almost done with the second quest, the only hickup is the lack of funds for travel (ran out of dimensional diamonds). The only things I have to kill are 10 windsus (two shots) and 10 Portas (clanmate help FTW, else 3-4 shots) and I'll be done. It's infinitely easier, and alot better scripted. Where you have to go is also geographically more convenient than the first one, too. I have absolutely no idea what value these go-to-and-fro quests add to the gaming experience, esp since the rich can basically port everywhere and finish them in all in < 1 hour (since they have the funds).

Trial of the Scholar was the only quest I complained about being unbalanced. By the time you are level 37/38, most of the red areas that you visited for the first quest are going ping/yellow/white (and u have more M/P Def and M/Atk to kill the mobs - so spells don't fail as much, and yes they do fail).

My computers do more important things when I'm not sitting at them (like compiling large programs and running unit tests, etc.). It's awesome that you can make the cash, and have two accounts to /vendor on - but a game is not supposed to be so limiting and demanding that you feel you have to spend extra money for a second account to have a permanent /vendor bot or dedicate your computer to it most if not all of the time.

I'm not disagreeing with your points, and I'm definitely not saying they don't work as I haven't and will probably never try them. I like to maximize my game time on my toon doing things to advance him and this sort of faux economic oppression built into this game is causing it to wear very quickly.

Ciao.
Hopefully the chronicle after Interlude gives something that makes it the game funner while you're actually leveling up/advancing your toon other than faming cash for more/better armor and stuff. I wish :)
No steps were skipped, but someone in my clan told me he has ot be level 36 to continue, so we're going to try that. Thanks for your replies, everyone.
Usually they tell you when you have to level up before the next step. At least every quest I did, except the 39 quest (if I wasn't already the higher level) did this.

i afforded Top D at lvl 15. top C at lvl 25. B grade before i hit C grade.

Are you reffering to a new character with no outside help? When you make statements like that, you'd better explain the conditions you used to achieve this (how many and what character, how many hours you played a day, deleveling, time to do it, quests, etc). Otherwise someone might get the wrong idea...
Top D at 15 isn't unrealistic, since Spud came to Lionna when mats were still high.

After getting C Grade, the less time you have to grind/level, the more money you'll make per level, and Spud is quite definitely slow.

I think it's chapter three from the Grandis, chapter 4 comes from Casian himself.

Considering people are only trying to make suggestions to help you out you are very aggressive in your responses. I know nothing about you or your character(s). You may be a new player or you might not. My suggestion clearly states if you can afford it .

Please read posts before you start on a (in my opinion) rather rude response to another player trying to make things easier for you
I had almost top D at level 25, I started in open beta so I had no outside buffers, newbie buffs or anything else. You just have to grind for money, exp was a non issue for me then. I had brig set without the helm, power boots, rip gauntlets, and a SOR. Yeah it wasn't top TOP D but it still worked just fine. Actual top D (like an elven sword) would have been out of range of anyone, back then ... since there was no blacksmith to trade up.
A couple comments:

This quest blows. EllieBelly's quest guide is really well done.
If you killed more than a dozen of anything and didn't get the quest drop it should have been a clue that you missed a step. Certainly by the time you killed 20 and didn't get the drop it should have been clear.

As for adena--there was a GREAT post on Franz after it opened. It asked new Franz players after like a week or 10 days "how high are you and how much adena do you have?" or maybe it was in 2 questions.
Anyway--MOST (by far) players in that time were in mid-20's. MOST had about 400k in 'extra' adena and were still in NG (I'm not trying to quote here--it's my general recollection).
Solo, without help, new to game--most players won't have D-grade by lvl 20.

All that being said, with thousands of newbie shots, pots/herbs that drop, and newbie buffs, 1-25 is a LOT faster than it used to be.
That is not necessarily a GOOD thing...as the truly new player can outlevel his gear and make serious mistakes (like porting all over Aden to find "better" mobs--which to a new player means better exp per kill).
Exp per kill is a bad measurement. Exp per MINUTE is a good measurement. Leveling FAST, though understandable, will leave you broke if you ONLY level fast as a new player.
In a followup post the OP got it right--you can't focus on leveling and earning at the same time very easily. Too true.

There are many legit ways to earn adena...but it takes time to learn them and to do/use them. If the ONLY time you commit to L2 is rapid exp gain--you may as well quit now because you will not be able to legitimately afford the things you need.

One bit of advice--if you are going to focus on fast leveling and your server has AA selling as high as 6a each, head to the catas and farm sealstones during the competition. Sell AA overnight. You'll do reasonably better with this than with questing or above ground hunting. Hunt GREEN mobs in the catas.

If you think it's rude then that's your business. If I was actually being rude than I'd probably be banned atm.

This isn't a "carebear" game like WoW, so expecting anyone to be able to accumulate enough cash to have top D/C/etc. gear before or very soon after they reach that grade when they are new to the game is a very high expectation.

I'm currently on page 513 of 617 of these forums - how many new players do you think actually spend a fair amount of time researching these things. I'm willing to bet many of them don't even go to a forum (mostly people rerolling, newbies AFAICT are rare on this board - and it's usually the same question over again, way back to late 05 at least). NCSoft doesn't even give you a user guide in the L2 box, just a paper telling you what a few commands are ^^

Don't label a logical explanation for why a new player would never accumulate such cash, and why I refuse to dedicate my computer to L2 and shell out more cash to a company that has worse support than SOE for a permanent vendor/spoil-bot toon to sit in Dion/Giran all day selling things (and that would tie up... both of my computers?)

Like I told Spudnik, I'm not trying to disagree with his methods, or even say they are wrong. I just don't think a game is worth the time on my computer that I can use to do something for my RL job, which actually pays off quite nicely.

And yes, I was serious when I asked what kinda new player he was referring to (a response pls?) because the newbies I come across are all very self-sufficient [for some odd reason], and have gear on that I only dream of having, and know I never will. They are players that I play/raid/xp with much of the day, so I know they aren't farming/manoring cause I have at least twice the playtime that they have (10+ hours a day here). I don't know them personally- just in the game (and by that merit they CAN actually be rerolls, but I'm going by what they say and the apparent lack of knowledge they show while playing). It's not like they didn't link me the adena selling site everytime I said I was out of BSpS, anyways......

So yea, recommending (however indirect) that I wait until level 40 and C grade wouldn't help me (or pretty much any new, legit player) very much because they most probably (98% of the time) won't be able to afford it when they close in on the levels. In about 30 levels when I reroll and have millions of adena to give an alt I will do just that (thanks for the suggestion in that regard). I doubt I will ever make another human Mystic.

The thread was about a quest that should be completable at level 36 that is IMO insanely difficult (and it says Solo quest in the window, solo = u alone, and no outside buffers/help/etc. - I take these things literally) and very poorly scripted.

Either way the quest is done and if people would stop derailing the thread hopefully it will die.

Ciao.

Great post and you illustrated many of the points that I was trying to make. Most new players spend their time in game grinding - due to the nature of LIneage 2, XP > all so they rarely allocate the time to farm adena cause that would mean they have to kill green/light blue mobs many times to get it.

It's extremely hard to find a cata group unless you are a poler/healer/recharger (at least at my level range) and the one time I did get in a cata group (about an hour ago), we got trained by an Adena farmer because unfortunately we were tresspassing in his catacomb.

So I refuse to go to those.

P.S. Can't petition anything in game, it gets dropped the minute you press the submit button.
You have one serious chip on your shoulder, and yes you are rude, extremely. With an attitude like that you will get very little help from anyone.

Firstly I have never played WOW only L2 so please no reference to 'carebear' required.

Secondly I have played this game a lot longer than you so I think I am well aware of the limitations, but thanks for your ever so useful insights.

Lastly AGAIN I did not tell you to wait until level 40 because I assumed you could afford to, I suggested it because AGAIN not everyone is a completely new player, not everyone has limited access to additional help (friends, clans etc) and not everyone knows all the mechanics of the game.

I am glad you have achieved the end of your quest, however please do not try to correct someone else in the manor you do without first considering why they are saying what they are. In case you hadn't noticed I also suggested other areas for you to level to help you get there quicker. NONE of those suggestions required top gear, adena or anything else that you are making a massive deal out of not having.

Ciao

You can read the first statement of the other post IRT your rude comment.

I don't need grinding suggestions, I've read almost the entire forum and have stickies all around my second monitor (for the 3rd/forth time). I know how much SP I need per Skill Level, I know what setups/tats I need at certain grade levels. Don't know what you mean by chip on my soulder, unless u mean the mole or smallpox vaccination scar I have (kinda cute too :)). I know the best grinding spots up to level 80 for what class I am choosing to play.

This is a low skill required kinda game anyways (IRT grinding and farming) and since I had already read the threads links to me it's not like I was totally ignorant of it. I had already stated my beef with the quest, and my reason for doing it at the levels stated in the game. I have already stated WHY I did most of it alone - it is a Solo quest. Solo, by definition, if your toon with your toon's buffs and not your toon with a buffbot/recharger/etc. running behind it. Someone had already stated what the issue was and the issue was ammended. The extra input about level 40 was extraneous because my reasons for doing the quest was stated beforehand. I will state it again:

I do the quests as they come up to break up the monotany of the grind. Variety is good, and better served over time except in one small dose every 20-30 levels.

Have fun farming green mobs with no BSpS as a nuker if you so choose. Have fun running around the continents as a human mystic if you so choose. I ran from Dion -> Light Elf Village -> Dark Elf Village -> Dion -> Oren yesterday and it took almost two hours to do all that.

Why would you assume I can afford C grade gear at level 40 when the main thing that ****** me off was wasting 1.5k BSpS and going near out of supplies due to the script of the quest being inacurate. If I can afford gear worth several millions of adena I don't think I'd have much room to complain about wasting less than 200k worth of spiritshots.
