just ONE account, are you insane?

im wondering if anyone else plays this game with only one account. that means, no boxes. if you have an account that you share with the rest of your clan, yes thats a box. just based on the principle that its an MMO, any other single-account players exist? reason why im asking is because im thinking about getting a second account to buff my sub. seems everyone else is off in their own private partyland, so why not?
Well, while I do have two accounts now, I don't play them at the same time (no point....yet). Eventually I plan to but for now, I only have one character over 20 so the others are moot. But for me, it was because it felt odd to only have on account given the fact that doing so would pretty much be putting myself at the mercy of my fellow players. Bad move in a game this old IMO. Plus, I've always had multiple accounts in MMOs since, well, EQ1 in 2000. Doesn't make me less social (which is pretty much the beef I hear most), it makes me less dependent. "We need a healer". I got one. "We need a slower". Got one o' them too. "No tanks LFG". I got it covered. ;)

My experiences in other MMOs (EQ, AO, post-ToA DAoC, etc) taught me that sometimes, the most "needed" classes are also the most boring and/or solo limited (or otherwise unattractive) ones so they can be fairly rare (or just seem like it).

Anyway, I'd recommend getting the second account if it's not going to cause financial hardship. Not just to bot a support class (though that's an obvious benefit of the deal) but also for pure utility purposes (having a buy or sell trader up in Giran 24/7, extra WH space via additional characters that aren't actively played, etc). I set mine up for the above reasons as well as for additional character slots plus the fact that the box is less than 2 cups of coffee from Starbucks and I had several gamecards for CoH/V I had gotten from various conventions. So I'm not going to actually have to pay for either account until September 18th (could go longer if I use the gamecards on one account alone).
I'm one of those single user... single account people.

And i'm not insane, I'm an Orc
Ha Ha.... Tee Hee Hee...... Mumble Mumble....... I've only one account..... Please stop the voices....... Tra la la......
ty splatter for your kind words. when i level up i want to be just like you :) honestly id rahter have immersion and depth to my game than levels. thats what it really comes down to. but why play a competive game if you always lose?!?
background: i basically soloed the last 50% to 76, and im starring down the barrel of another 2 years before i do it again. really hurts to compare yourself to someone that has 6 level 75+ characters, in 1/2 the time.
you can have all the starbucks you want, but youre still using out-of-game assets to get an in-game benefit. you cant have multiple characters in D&D, why not? (besides that the game master wont let you) because its just not the way its played.
I used to have one account then someone got me hooked on phonix.... err I mean a buffer account. It's also great for shops. You can have a sell shop active and another one to check the town. If you're a dwarf then you can have your own recharger.

Then I was thinking maybe I'll get a 3rd account so I can make another BD or PP. Then I thought some more and well if I get 2 more then I can have shops up while I play on the other 2 accounts. Nooo hrm I need 1 more toon I can cover all the important towns. Then how about one more (total 6) so I can have 2 buffers and 1 main DD and 3 on shop mode?

Then I smack myself and back to reality. I only have 2 accounts and it works great.

but why play a competitive game if you always lose?!?

We aren't playing a competitive game.... Their are no winners or losers here, their is no such thing

Except for those that max their credit cards for a game.
at 57 i was faced with the decision of not playing or making a second account
i decided i wanted to continue playing so my SE was born from the fire of a million big booms

you guys can all preach the evils of the devil box but my second account does what it was designed for and that is allowing me to kill a mob when the 4 real buffers on my server arent logged in
if a real buffer or healer wants to jump in party with me they can do so and my box will stay out of party but more often then not those real buffers/healers will be with a true DD like an archer or nuker and i assume thats because they dont want to gimp my xp :/
That 2nd acct is both a blessing and a curse. My 4 yr old PC is fairly strong for it's age, but it runs one client a lot better than it runs 2. And during peak internet use locally, my bandwidth is reduced; playing 2 accts at a time aggravates the lag under such conditions. Nevertheless, it's become part of my playstyle for my Destroyer and I will continue to play that way. To me, it is just that, a choice of playstyle when I must play solo (which is unfortunately most of the time). As far as other players go, if you do or don't have a 2nd acct, why in the Sam Hill should I think any differently of you?
I only got one account, but my wife has 2 so.

Wait a minute. Please tell me you're not comparing having more than one account to EBAYING/RMT. How do you make that leap of logic?

And your D&D analogy falls flat because in the D&D example you gave, you have a ready made party already set up and playing together in every play session. If someone's missing or can't show, the DM generally adjusts the campaign (or uses a filler adventure). What's the single best way to emulate that in an MMO?

How about this? Why don't we let NCSoft (or SOE or Blizzard or CCP or Mythic or Turbine or...) determine "how it's played"? I kinda think they have more of a vested interest in doing so. You believe that having one account is the proper way to play the game. You're entitled to that opinion. I know people who believe you should only have one CHARACTER (no alts, even on different servers) or you're not playing in the "spirit of the game". They're entitled to that opinion. I just have a real problem with the "out of game assets for ingame benefit" leap. My broadband connection costs more than dialup and helps me play the game better. My computers all exceed the game's recommended specs by quite a bit. Are these the same as ebaying too? My out of game assets are giving me ingame benefits, after all.

If that's the case, why are you even considering a second account? There must be some deficiency (real or perceived) in the game for you to consider it. You make it seem like having more than one account is somehow cheating. Are there not enough of "the right classes" on when you're playing to constitute a group which would allow you to level better and/or faster? Maybe the old tried & true single account retort (that I've seen everywhere except here, so far) "Find a (insert support class here) to duo with!" doesn't work here or doesn't make sense given the game's basic population makeup?
for the sake of agrument then, lets remove the part of the equation where you give NCsoft more money. if accounts were free and you could run lets say 12 clients from one really good computer, how many accounts would you, as a personal decision, choose to have? 24? 36?

the more the merrier.
as long as you re able to control all of them without... ehhhh you all know.
make your life and your gaming easier. the game is already hard enough with this endless grinding etc. why not make it a bit more fun?

i'd say 4
me and a buffer and healer and 1 dude to sit in town all day while i xp

That's my vote as well. I've run 6 at once (each on a different computer) in EQ though so I know how much of a PITA running multiples can be. I might run 7 (me, buffer, healer, and one seller and one buyer in Giran and Dion) but that's doubtful. At the height of my EQ obsession, I've had 8 accounts (2 bazaar mules plus warrior, wizard, rogue, ranger, shaman, cleric as mains on their respective accounts) though except for raids during the Planes of Power era (flags), I've never run more than 6 at once (and usually just 2).

And running more than one character on one computer would drive me nuts (unless the 2nd and above characters are totally immobile).
Keeping more than two accounts moving is extremely hard to do. PvE or PvP. Just having them as AFed buff boxes or sitting boxes is a whole different story.

I generally run 6 clients on one computer. That's enough to get a party started and rolling. I do invite live people though =)
i have one account.
ty splatter for your kind words. when i level up i want to be just like you

o.O That is nearly worthy of being a sig :)
If you play with RL friends you're also using out of game assets to gain an unfair advantage (party availability etc.).

That's just a dumb comparison.
omg you all like box?

i use a singel account >_> its hard i know but still cmon 2 me box is just like cheating i know it isnt but i still feel like that>_> just an exuse 2 not look for partys plus i heard some dude saying i got 6 accounts

:/

game:25 euro (25x6=150)
a month 14 euro (14x6=84 x12=1008+150=1158 )

well lets say you play for a year thats freaking 1158 euro omg you have 2 be kidding me >_L i really cant figure out WHY!!!!!
I use one account. and am very happy with just one account. I do not see it being hard to play just one character but it is beneficial to have two accounts.
I don't have a buff box (I'd much rather party a life one; if no-one is available, I just go grind solo. Not caring for one's XP is a big help here. :)). I do, however, have a second account for selling stuff - this one mostly gets used by my clan mates, for whom I try to sell stuff (getting a % of the sales volume).

Would NCSoft allow us to hire NPCs to do our selling and buying, I'd go with a single account again.
I have 2 accounts because time is important. A buffer lets me xp faster and saves my hide in case of death. In the event both toons die (happens sometimes) I can bring a lowbie alt on one of the accounts to brez me and again saving me time. Two accounts is fine and I have no guilty feelings about it. It's not like I murdered someone.
I dont think I started using a 2 box buffer until the academy got implemented. You kinda have to be mad not to use a lvl ~70 ish buffer on the other account to lvl an academy toon for clan rep points. Ive never used an OOP buffer to duo with any of my mains though. Kinda hard to do with a PP and a Bish :P

If you think people use buffers as boxes to lvl faster...then you are only seeing part of the truth.

It saves adena as well, and quite a lot.
i'm late to your post Coin, but I have only ever had one account.

Wouldn't think of paying for the same game twice. I can play 70 toons on the one account and 7 on one server.
I like the cooperative part of L2 where you party with other PLAYERS.
I'll take a live healer/buffer over a bot any time.

I don't agree that "2 accounts = botter". I play with a number of 2 boxers who are not into that foolishness.

I have so much trouble controlling one toon that giving me a second account would be like giving a Formula 1 car to a toddler...a waste.
I only have one account.
Hard to play EE as main.

Ooh! Ooh!

Me!

I only have my account! My wife has one, but she's not active right now, so it doesn't count. Besides, she'd be on it, not me.

I generally run 6 clients on one computer.

what kind of computer you got there m8y?
I got 1 account and im proud of it.(which is bad since this is supposed to be NORMAL!)
More accounts=leggit ebay in my book.Because you give real life money for an ingame asset (a buffer/healer is like an OEd weapon-if you cant see that well get a pair of glasses).

Wrong.....More then one account means, the person likes to multi-task

WRONG!The person needs to make a friend!

Oh and pwn i think you might get banned....or not :/
well really if i do get banned for mentioning that(which i think is ******ed but im not gonna argue)i dont really care since im only on here til my L2blah account gets unbanned

I have two accounts, the second I got in c4, that I created with support toons for the most part.

I better not catch you eating some sugary goodies or drinking some coffee by playing, because that would be a blatant case of using performance-enhancing drugs to boost how long you can stay awake.

And god forbid you ask for any buffs, because clearly, if it was meant to be buffed, you'd get your own buffs, right? Wouldn't want an evil dual-boxer to contaminate you with those highly out of character boosts!

And if you play a LE or DE, I sure as hell hope you're out to pk the other race, because I mean that's what you're SUPPOSED to do!

Anti-botting speeches I would agree on, but come on, the anti-dual-box -_- was meaningfull in C1 and C2 when people could still find parties every night, but nowadays I'd rather go out with my SE in tow than sit in town for weeks doing nothing.
You're using real life asset for the opportunity to earn another in game advantage. That's the difference.

If my boyfriend wants to party me (or I him) despite me not being that high level, that's quite definitely using an RL advantage that others might not have (i.e. my boyfriend) to get an ingame advantage as well.

What's that then, legit powerlevelling service?

People who have RL friends who play have a much more serious advantage in game than a second, third or fourth account can give you. And yet people [censored] about the dual boxing like there's no tomorrow.

Ban all couples!!!1!!1!!!11111one

I have two accounts, the second I got in c4, that I created with support toons for the most part.

but really what i think the OP is looking for, is the why. did you do it to get an edge in PvP, or make PvE more fun/eccenomical, or something else? although im against it morally i am really considering doing it, because Everyone at 70+ has at least one extra account, either you are gimp, or youre pimp.

But a bad enough of a ban here, means a ban from the game also....

hmmm
Well at first I made it to hold extra gear and for selling. Then I made a new char to become a SE to do noobie raids and such, and started a SH on my first account so I started levelling them together. I then used the SE on my second account to replace one I no longer had access to that I had been using with my BH.

And when I subbed I NEEDED the SE for my SPS.

So it really didn't start out to get an edge in anything, it was just very useful, which is even more so the case now.
i started much the same way; i was grouping with a clan SE on my sorceress for a month or so before that person /quit. i got a game time card and with it, a trial serial. i decided maybe its time to have my own SE to help me grind. i raided to 40, nailed the quests and used some of the money i was given as my clan mate left on basic gear for us both. now having rerolled servers i use the 2nd account for warehousing, storage and vendor. boxing can be fun, but i find it all too hard to guarantee.
I have access to around 25 accounts.

is that bad?
that can be an issue should you try to use them all at once.

i have 18 Trial codes from the cards ive collected - doesnt mean i have 18 accounts.
No i dont use them all at once o.o

Just accounts ive got access to.

It builds up a lot over time o.o
It seems a lot of people have more than one account. It makes me wonder if most of these groups of people I see running around are really just one person playing with themself.
I got the second account after being completely sick of being turned down by the same idiots who'd rather sit still and LFG than duo me for too long. :) Now I just love controlling two toons, it's much more fun... and it means you bring more to a party, which is fun as well.

im drinking coffee and playing Lineage 2 at the moment am i using performance enchancing drugs to boost how long i could stay awake :D
I'm another who has only had a single account. I've never been able to justify paying for a second account and subscription... because i'm a lazy student bum.

werd
I used to not like the idea of a second account too.

But then I decided to get one to have my own recharger for crafting shots. I don't have the heart to ask someone else to do it and I don't have money to pay for it everytime as well.

Yes, I suck at making money. Yes, I am weird. Sue me. :p
i suck at making money to :(
and if anyone plays on franz whats up with tribunal are they all afk all the time cuz ive been pmin people from that clan to try to get a academy invite and they never seem to respond to there pms
im glad you mentioned crafting. something ive always wanted to do is to have all the recipies in the game registered. got a collection now but its nowhere near close to being a full set. 600+ dwarven recipies in game, and even with all your proofs of fishing skills maxed out you only have 90 per dwarf. basically i need 6 more warsmiths.
I also only have one acc. Sure it might be a lot faster and more easy to have 2 or more for different purposes but do u really need 2 accounts ?
Why play a game alone with 2 accounts when u can meet a lot nice ppl that play a healer/buffer ?
Sometimes having more then one account looks like cheating to me a bit. You get much more advantages then someone with only one account, then again since u pay for 2 accounts i think its not.

For me the need of two accounts only shows the game is broken at some point. Is it because no one wants to play a healer so we have a lack of em and need 2 acc or is it because of the boxers no one wants/needs to have a main char healer in party ?
I think its some of booth.

Anyway i stay with only 1 account and im proud of it.
Only one account.
I don't like the argument of paying one more account is like having a boy/girlfriend to play with (taking advantages from real life). It's insulting. But if you can't tell the difference between money and friends...
MMOs are about having friends to play with. And I don't like the idea of real life money making people richer ingame. For once everybody could start on an equal foot... another world (in its small dimension) that is messed up by real life money.
Too bad... I play with friends, and 923 to the sociopaths and the greedy!
Regardless of why I started a second a/c, I now use it either as a healer behind my Glad or keeping a shop up while I level on my main.
If I go for food or whatever, I can have two shops open for biz selling spellbooks, crafting or whatever.
I can run my accounts on one pc but, I have 2 pcs next to each other so often have both running with one on each. Great for dragging a healer around.
To me its not botting. It makes my enjoyment of the game far greater.
The money is peanuts so I pay for extra pleasure :P
I find the whole 'you can get a group if you don't box' argument incredibly cute.

A) boxers still group.
B) boxing helps you get into groups.

i box because im a dorf and dorfs dont get parties

i party alot and the main reason i get parties is because im a dorf who can self buff vr4 and heal and recharge when needed
LOL!!! Dwarfs dont get parties!! LOL! maybe emo dwarfs dont get parties... I dont box, play a dwarf, and am fine ^.^ WS even, no spoils. (yes, I fit into the 70+ category, with no box O.O) Lol!! Dwarfs dont get parties... LOL!!! I can't believe someone thinks this. Silly nameless1.
Anyway, I prefer live people, boxes are boring, dont talk back. I'll admit it would be usefull at times to have my own pet, but more trouble than I think it's worth.
Your gigls from Lionna?

You failed my som and my Maj helm.

GFTO thanks.
It'd be hard for me to fail your maj helm and som... seeing how I dont have it registered!!! You're a bit confused I think... I am gigls from Lionna though... but it's hard to craft things that arn't registered...
Also, If you're in Star you should be having Akeshi craft your stuff anyway... or does he not craft for idiots?

GFTO thanks.
Crafting with Akeshi is like playing Russian Rulet ( spelling but w/e ) with 5/6 bullets in the gun.

Was pretty sure it was you though o.o.

-edit- just looked at my screenshots and it was happylife not you sowwy <3 ^.^

-edit- happylife also failed my drac bow :(
No worries ^.^ It's cool... but please dont give me a bad name unless I deserve it. I have failed a couple things, but overall I've been super lucky ^.^ Maybe you should give me recs for stuff so I can make them for ya :P lol

yes sounds crazy 1 account for L2 ??????????
i needed 3 account for 1 toon to be the class i need to be
weird with vangaurd i only need 1 account to be my class ???????? thats realy strange
hem, thread is quite long...- i will respond direclty to the OP: 1 account for me, not even thinking of a second... want to keep my other options in free time than being brain cabled to my pc and not to talk about money :P
I have one account for my main. I have lvled a SE at my wife's account and I recentlt bought a third one to lvl a Prophet there xD

I also only have one acc. Sure it might be a lot faster and more easy to have 2 or more for different purposes but do u really need 2 accounts ?

Let's not bring 'need' into this, k? You don't NEED to play L2 (or any other game, for that matter) at all. It's all 'want'. People WANT to be able to log in and play not stand around waiting and hoping "the right class" becomes available for grouping. People WANT to have a seller/buyer up as much as possible without sacrificing their main's playtime. People WANT a support class for any of a multitude of reasons. None of that is a NEED.

Why play a game alone with 2 accounts when u can meet a lot nice ppl that play a healer/buffer ?

I'm not well versed in this personally but from all I've read, a 'live' healer/buffer isn't generally available all the time you might want or need one. Then what do you suggest folks do?

For me the need of two accounts only shows the game is broken at some point. Is it because no one wants to play a healer so we have a lack of em and need 2 acc or is it because of the boxers no one wants/needs to have a main char healer in party ?
I think its some of booth.

I absolutely agree with this. See, the problem is, many MMOs by design require a sort of 'critical mass'. Meaning, a lot of people playing with even class distribution. Anyone who has played these games for any length of time can tell you that usually, support classes are RARE because they're often the classes with the most limited toolsets (i.e. they buff or heal or both but rarely do they do mid-tier damage or have much in the way of solo tools). Since you don't get xp for healing or buffing (at least not directly) and you can't heal or buff mobs to death, people gravitate to the classes that do damage or have some useful utility. Also, there's the burnout factor (most easily apparent in EverQuest 1 with clerics) where everyone counts on you to do your job or to be everpresent that eventually it becomes too much.

Funny thing about games that promote interdependence. They actually make you dependent on others, which may not be very convenient for most. If you have 2 hours to play, do you really want to spend 1/4 to 1/2 of that time just assembling (or trying to assemble) a party?

Kingdom, I'd suggest you open a trial account. See if the potential utility and flexibility of a support character for your main is enough to balance out the extra logistical considerations (controlling more than one character). I'm fairly certain as a vet that you won't have any trouble at all getting the character to the second class change inside of 15 days. One thing I will warn you about though is that it can be quite addictive. The autonomy that having your own group available whenever you log in for however long you feel like playing, is something that's hard to exaggerate. Grouping with others is more fun (IMO) but sometimes, you don't have that "live" support class needed to complete a group. In that case, as MalineII and nameless1 alluded to, it's great to be able to provide it yourself.
Personaly I have one account and I don't plan on getting a second one. I can't justify myself to spend more money on a game. If I find myself to level too slow on higher levels, I'll party more. If I can't, I'll quit.

As for 2-boxing, I have only a comment to make. I see a lot of people complain that certain classes don't get parties. That might be true for casual parties but what about clan parties? In no clan I have been so far, have I ever seen a clanmate turning down other members for parties. Be it dwarfs, healers, buffers, anything. If someone faces such problems, he should change clan. If someone is on different time zone than the rest or the clan is inactive, same thing. Having a 2-box because you simply want to be independant or level fast, is your choice and money. But saying this is absolutely necessarry due to lack of parties, finds me a bit sceptical.
Good point by AndreasK

1 accout here too, for now and ever.
I don't considers boxers to be cheating, but I don't like it, it doesn't serve the game well.
The only parties my prophet can get in clan are boring as all hell, since large parties are, to a live prophet, like stabbing yourself in the face, and clan parties 'that take any player' are almost always large.

PS: Muchos love for Gigls, she's saved me from dropping two characters I otherwisely love. <3

As far as the cost goes... Two Lineage II accounts are more fun to me than one, that's $30 a month. I play a 5~6 hours each day during university times and a lifeless amount during holidays. That's ~20 cents per hour of entertainment at two accounts.

If I draw this much (which is really a cheap hobby) I'll pay more for paper, pencils and inks. If I try reading this much and actually buy a book or two, I'll be well over the cost as well ... etc.

MMOs are one of the cheapest hobbies you can have unless you ebay. :p

The only parties my prophet can get in clan are boring as all hell, since large parties are, to a live prophet, like stabbing yourself in the face, and clan parties 'that take any player' are almost always large.

So, you are not rejected from clan parties, rather the other way round. You find them "boring" or unproductive EXP-wise (if I understood correctly what "stab yourself in the face" meant). Thus you preffer your own 2-box.
No.

I find that I can't actually play my character in them, because she has to wear robes and sit down. This would not be demanded of any other character, but for support, it's no problem to make them completely fall out of their role and build (i.e. buff up and then help DD) just to fit them into a party they don't fit into.

Would you say a warlord 'is getting clan groups' if he was asked to sit down the entire time due to not having a single-target backup weapon and the pole being a disturbance? Nobody would do that (because it's idiotic) to a DD, but to a support character - no problem.

My prophet can't get clan parties. The buff***** prophet she can turn into can. A prophet is not a large group buffer (period), but clan parties are almost always forcing prophets into larger groups than they can really expect to buff.

Therefore, my box (a PS) which will give me the power to start my own groups, at a place I like, of a size I like.
Could someone tell me the best way (if any) to run two accounts on the same computer? Do you guys use windowed mode (can you do this) or something?

Also my main is currently an Orc Shaman (I'm new to the game), would it be beneficial to make a dwarf (crafting or spoils) to do the damage and have the shaman as support?

The only parties my prophet can get in clan are boring as all hell

thats because you refuse to party with me :)
You are on the wrong server... '__' I think.

So if you want a second account your not in need of one ?
For your arguments in general i dont need to wait for someone to play this game. A healer sure does help but i also have alt chars i can go play and i enjoy too. My SH does not need anyone to lvl fast sure support helps but i dont need to wait i just go out and kill for MP recharge use btm and heal pet.
My Paladin also i can go out and kill without using ss at lvl 60
sure i use herbs that drops and sometimes my wolf lvl 56 just for the fun.
My high lvl BH can go to beast farm and get a tained Pet for heals and buffs u dont even need to stay there just get enoghth food witch you.
If you need a healer bad ask in clan or ally for one or for partys usually you will easily get one. But even if i cant play them while i really need to wait for a healer i still can go play lower alts and do manor for mats or money.
I dont really need a 2nd account. A second account only affect money and exp you will get booth faster then with only one account. If you want/need that go get a 2nd if not you can stay with only one.

I'm not well versed in this personally but from all I've read, a 'live' healer/buffer isn't generally available all the time you might want or need one. Then what do you suggest folks do?

Read above

Funny thing about games that promote interdependence. They actually make you dependent on others, which may not be very convenient for most. If you have 2 hours to play, do you really want to spend 1/4 to 1/2 of that time just assembling (or trying to assemble) a party?

Speaking of a perfect party ?
See usually it goes like this for me. I get on, say hi, get party request back ( from clan/ally/friends ).
Even if i really dont get a party i go play alone or do manor alone too (lvl 20 char ftw ).
See i dont play this game for max exp per hour i play for fun and enjoy also solo play, farming/collecting mats, craft things i need or for fashion.

To run windows mode press Alt - Enter and this is the way most people two box. I'm new to this myself having got my SH to 70 single-boxing.

You could roll a dwarf for spoils and once it got to your WC level could AOE for uber xp and lots of AA.

I am currently using my level 40 SE as OOP buffer for my WC - with VR1 and other buffs he rox down in the necropolis ;)
Gigls!!! My favorite Dorf!! And the luckies dwarf my clan has ever seen :)
One account here as well, and more often than not ironman solo due to my playtimes.

I don't care if someone boxes a healer/buffer...
Frankly, at least they are earning it themselves instead of purchasing it from 9-man/24-hour bot squads.
1 account here, I do just fine with me myself and I, some CH buffs sometimes. I have actual friends that play buffers...and some that have boxed buffers.
I run two accounts and my wife runs a third. When we party, I get on my Archmage and she on her BD, and we get full prophet/SE buffs from the other account. We make a pretty good team.

When we're on a clan hunt, or even with non-clan people, live players will ALWAYS be put into party over the buff-bots. I have no problem filling up a group with 9 people, regardless of what they are playing. Normally I'll drag my SE with me and use her to recharge people or help heal if needed. My clan usually doesn't have any healers/buffers on during the late hours that we play, so our 3rd account has really come in handy for us.

I run my two accounts on the same machine, in Windows mode. I use to run them both full screen, but quickly found out that switching between the accounts was much, much easier and faster in Windows mode. I make heavy use of macros for my buffers/healers, so that usually I just need to switch to that account, hit one or two F-keys, and then return back to my main, hardly missing a beat.
I've got two accounts, mixed characters on both but both have one main healer/buffer type - SE on one Prophet on the other.

Having said that I didn't start out with two accounts and only started my second when my old main was in her 50's.
I run in windowed mode with one on top of the other, just enough to see the bottom of the second screen to view damage or messages.

Umm ... have you thought about the possibility that Nameless lives in different timezone than most of ally? Completely different? You know ... world is bigger than from Florida to California ...
Then the problem isn't the game, it's his ally or server.
On two computers it's easy, just run client on each, and have the other's keyboard shortcuts set to some useful macros if you do not want to do everything with mouse. (WTB third and preferably fourth hand PM me)

On one computer I find it easiest to start first client in windows mode - resolution is a bit lower than actual desktop resolution. Then start client second time in windowed mode too and make those windows overlap a bit so you can check for messages and health status and such in other window.
It's interesting, but when you run 2 clients from the same directory, computer handles it better than if you run it from separate directory or disk. Less swap and lag and stuff.

If you are running longer distances with second client on autofollow, it sometimes lags and looses focus. So you have to verify every now and then that your box is following you.
"My SH does not need anyone to lvl fast sure support helps but i dont need to wait i just go out and kill for MP recharge use btm and heal pet."

how good are spellhowlers i dont really play them that often but ive heard of SH's wipin out full parties before(i kinda doubted that since i have played a spellhowler before and i dont know maybe i didnt have the right buffs but my casting speed sucked)
How many purely Australian clans are out there? Or from similar timezone
(I do NOT count Chinese farming clans)
dunno but we have a good dozen players in our clan who fit that timezone, i'd imagine that if you look you'll find people. Nameless however stated that he can't get groups based on class which makes his timezone irrelevant.

He is talking PvE, you are talking PvP...

If a SH wipes a whole party, that party is quite frankly horrible at PvP. Keep in mind the SH is a one-shot-kill to an archer.

PvE, SH are quite powerful and indeed can turn the infinite HP herbs into mana.

PvP, SH hit hard and faster than you'd think, but are the definition of glass cannon against any real damage-dealing class.

This is very true especially if you're using only 1 pc. Sometimes on the main DD screen the 2box looks like it is behind you but it isn't. Suddenly the 2box starts losing hp, you look at it and you see it getting hit, but nothing is hitting it. Switch screens and find out the 2box is far from the main DD so you gotta run to the main DD. It's either a bug or a gm test. I'm glad it rarely happens.
well i only have only one acc, but many of my friends and clannies that arent live buffers do bring their boxes when we party does that count?? :P j/k

i cant see any reason for a second acc(in my case) since im in a really big and live clan with plenty of live support almost any time of day and night :P

plus 2-boxing doesnt make u less social as long as u do party li ve ppl very once in a while even then though one can play a game in any way he/she enjoys it

This still stands, I can get a party at any time of day. And if not, I can go to hot springs or somewhere busy (it's busy on our server, and has some cool quests I can do) and get free buffs from someone or pick up a party. Stupid emo dwarfs...

Also, <3 you guys ^.^

Anyway, back to the point of the thread:

Since it's easy to mooch free buffs from others that have boxed buffers in busy areas it seems kind of a hastle to make your own. Then you also have people like me bugging you for free buffs :P lol. I definately wont nock people that do have them though, especially if they share. Sometimes I even get buffed without asking, people are really nice about it.

If you prefer soloing in areas without people you might want one. I personally can't stand this, but I'm not in a big pvp clan. We only have 2 wars so I dont really have to worry about ganking much.

So if you want a second account your not in need of one ?

(emphasis mine)

You answered your own question. ;)

Maybe it has to do with personal definition. To me, a need is a base requirement (food, water, shelter). Everything else is a want. I don't need satellite TV but I got it because I wanted it. In this instance, I only need one account to play L2. The second account is a want (i.e. above and beyond what is absolutely necessary in order to log in and play).

The rest of your post is your personal view, which I respect. But realize that there are some people who wish to concentrate their efforts on developing one character at a time. So switching to a lowbie alt whenever you can't find a party that can get decent xp (and by 'decent', I mean better xp than you can get solo) works counter to that goal. Believe me, I've done what you state many a time in many a game. To the point where I found myself with several relatively high level characters, which made 2 (or more) boxing even more attractive.

The fact that you can get parties at any hour of the day or night for any reason and at any level range via your clan or alliance is a blessing. But I don't think clans and/or allys that are bursting with people and active 24/7 are all that common (I could definitely be wrong though). And aren't there member limits on clans here? i.e. you can't have 3,000+ characters in a clan (ala EQ2)? But I would imagine a clan and/or ally like that (active at all times with folks in pretty much all level ranges) would be the ideal for most folks.

Anyway, I was just trying to illustrate why folks go for multiple accounts, thinking of the various reasons I've done it (I think I've had 2 or more accounts in almost every mainstream MMO released in the US since Ultima Online. Could be wrong though, that's A LOT of games :p). It's a matter of convenience (at least for me). I'm always willing to group with "live" players. But when I log in, I want to get going NOW. Waiting around for an hour or more for a RBG to form up because "we need 1 or 2 more (insert class here)" can be annoying in large doses. And that's only the 20s. I can imagine it would (or could) be a lot more frustrating when you can't get a level per play session for some folks.

If I find myself to level too slow on higher levels, I'll party more. If I can't, I'll quit.

Most two boxers I know hit that crossroad and, like me, decided to get a 2nd account instead of quitting.

I've been in most major alliances on my server and a ton of different clans. I have seen some clans that managed to get parties going every night for about a week or two, and then people go on vacations and what not and eventually there's like 1-2 people online in the clan and it dissolves.

Maybe on your server it's different, but I can assure you on Erica partying hasn't been an option since people moved out of ToI. Mages have been leveling alone since prelude 'cause they leveled faster that way. Then archers started soloing around C1 or C2. Then before you knew it, any class that could bring damage to a party was off soloing and all you had left were parties of 7-8 healers and a few dwarves.

When you get higher level and get 0.5% per hour in poorly balanced parties that can take 3-4 days to get formed, instead of 1% with dual boxing or 4-5% for the FotM ubber parties, you basically have the choice of getting 1 level per 6-12 months by grouping with your clan or a level every few weeks dual-boxing.

Until NCSoft makes it viable for non-FotM classes such as OL to party again, I'm gonna pop up my bsps and turn red on people who say dual-boxing is evil.

If you don't wanna buy a second account, that's your choice, but yeah, I cary bsps and I'm not afraid to use 'em. And be warned, I run around with my dualboxed SE's buffs. :P
1 account, shillien knight if you haven't figured it out, and Yes i am insane, but the ladies love it (twitch)
Hm for all the one boxers, go to Beast Farm lvl 65+ mobs, and feed a Buffalo to a Trained buffalo here u have your own buffer if u take it out of beast farm he will still buff u if u bring enough food.
He will not heal u when your out of BF.
I take my trained buffalo to VoS and get 3 buffs of Emp and bts and ww and acu and concentration every 20 mins.
Good buffs for a necro.
just watch out for Naabs who start killing ur buffer :)
ps one food lasts 1 min so if u bring 200 u have a 3 hour 20 mins buffer.
Have fun Gaar
It would be impossible for me to have just one account either way. Slowly but surely, I'm working my way through all of the races/classes, just because I like playing the game from different perspectives.

A you sure your not getting confused between characters and paid accounts?
I don't leave town without a minimum of 13 buffs and 3 dances. Kinda makes more than one account a necessity.

Besides which, how would my gf and I manage to squeeze our 32 characters onto one account? :p
32!?!

holy ****zybaLLz ! o.O

What no woolly underwear???

Well, I have about 10 toons now (my future DA is not listed yet), all of which I play at some point or another. Since you can only do 7 characters per account at a time that means.......
IMO having one DD (Meaning so you can have just your box and you, or you alone) and possibly a buffer in party really speeds things up. I have 3 accounts..1 of which I no longer subscribed as of being intoxicated and gone bot hunting due to bad in-game influences. 64 perma red PW yay x_x But if your having your (saying its a support class) buffer in party it really helps you along faster. What I did was I made my SE at the same time as my DD so that I sat my DD next to a tree in d grade and let me DE mystic one shot everything then when d grade came I used a pole..the only thing that might be bad is the fact as the grades hitting you at the same time for those with not alot of in-game cash. But definatly worth while to have a dualboxed buffer .. my friend had a two boxes, a SE and a PP ..he gets 1-52 very quickly on this toons.

Actualy, you can have 7 characters per server, so you can have 70 characters on one account.
<---gone off to delete some toons
Single Account Paladin here. While I believe it is non of my business if you want to solo, dual box and be left alone, when they take away the job of a live player or makes them feel useless because their buffs are not as good as the buffpet, I am not keen on them. I seen it happen too often. I miss one of my SE friends because of that.

at 57 i was faced with the decision of not playing or making a second account
i decided i wanted to continue playing so my SE was born from the fire of a million big booms

you guys can all preach the evils of the devil box but my second account does what it was designed for and that is allowing me to kill a mob when the 4 real buffers on my server arent logged in
if a real buffer or healer wants to jump in party with me they can do so and my box will stay out of party but more often then not those real buffers/healers will be with a true DD like an archer or nuker and i assume thats because they dont want to gimp my xp :/

/Agreed
<---- owns one account
Got 3 accounts, none active atm and usually only 2 of them I use.
I too have only one account. :P Even though I was thinking about dualboxing SE for my WL... No that wouldn't be fun at all. So I won't be dualboxing ever.
it's easy to 2box an se ona warlord... :)
Easy or not, I prefer real player, what's the point of mmorpg when I play solo?

If I want soloing, I choose another character which is good at soloing.

need to agree!
actually, if i want to enjoy a single player game, i click on "doomIII" icon :P
Of course there's nothing "bad" of having a 2nd account, but apart of the load of freetime you want to spend on a game (or not) i think it somehow miss the spirit of a multiplayer game... always, in my own opinion ^_^

I totally understand that point of view....when/if it's true. But nothing in this thread indicates that anyone who has multiple accounts does so so that they can play alone (in an MMO). Maybe others have experienced folks who do that but I've never met any multiboxers in ANY MMO who does so for that reason (and I know someone who boxes 24 characters at once). With the exception of that 24-boxer (who does it so he can do current content without guild drama...and to stroke his rather massive ego), everyone I've encountered with multiple accounts does so for the utility it offers.

I'd absolutely agree that I don't get folks who play MMOs to exclusively be solo and stay to themselves. I've had it explained to me (an MMO world is more 'alive' than say Oblivion, which is pure NPCs and just because they want people AROUND doesn't mean they want people all in their business or have to deal with those people's issues/drama/idiosyncrasies) but I still don't get it. But just as I don't think someone is 'insane' for only having one account, I also don't see the insanity or problem with folks having two or three or four accounts, depending on the game. For example, I know a "hardcore tradeskiller" in EQ1 who has 4 accounts (one buyer in bazaar, one seller in bazaar, one with her main, and one with a variety of classes to support her main....usually in farming tradeskill components). Considering the number of times she's grouped with guild members and/or helped them with quests and the like, I don't see her having multiple accounts to be anti-social.

But, whatever. There are always folks who are going to judge someone because of what they choose to spend money on OR the hobbies they choose to pursue. Whether it be collecting comics/baseball cards/coins/Magic: The Gathering cards or bric-a-brac off eBay or garage sales or customizing a car or online gaming, someone is going to find fault with it.

But Kingdom, just start a trial account and see if you can deal with the logistics of running two characters. Some folks can't and that's okay. But I'm sure you'll find that the freedom provided by having your own (insert class here) to support your main will be well worth the additional maintenance required. It's not so you can play alone all the time. It's so you can still play (and advance your main) when, as nameless1 put it, the four 'live' buffers aren't on or available.
...actually, i had already made my decision back when splatter replied. i got a baby buffalo, thats all the support i really need. when he dies his legs go straight out, cracks me up every time. there are dual boxers in my clan, i dont really have anything against the people that chose to do it. it does seem like there are a lot more poly-boxers now, than there used to be. but if you have to stoop to the level of your enemy to compete with them, then you have become your enemy, and they have already won.
nothing to say, I just want to be part of this *** long thread.

/bump

im wondering if anyone else plays this game with only one account. that means, no boxes. if you have an account that you share with the rest of your clan, yes thats a box. just based on the principle that its an MMO, any other single-account players exist? reason why im asking is because im thinking about getting a second account to buff my sub. seems everyone else is off in their own private partyland, so why not?

I have my main account, dwarf account, bd, se, pp, and sws lol. With 2 PC's, a 5 button mouse and a Nostromo, I can 4 box without a problem. However, I only do this while leveling my slaves. Otherwise, I just box what is missing until a real player of that class logs in.

I'm lucky enough to have 4 PCs (and a crappy laptop for looking up spoils etc.). If I really need to then I can run three of them via Nostromos however I more usually just use two additional PCs with a Prophet and an SE, who get XP as and when I feel like it.

As I am the only one left in my clan that hasn't defected to WoW, no-one ever logs in so I just box support all the time. I can't say that I have seen a clan that is attractive enough to join so I envisage my approach to the game remaining the same for some time yet. :D

The the ONLY problem I have with dual boxing. If you want to level up your alt, please don't insult the lower level buffers by bringing your high level buffer and overwriting their buffs, recharging when they can recharge, heal when they can heal, etc. If they don't have the buff, they you really don't need the buff.

Part of the fun of the game is the challenge, if you remove that - it's just boring and monotanous, like soloing. And since soloing is currently better XP for me, I will just do that instead.
