spellhowler wannabes

Player Questions Started Last reply 17 posts
My gf and I created a pair of dark mystics few days ago. We both like to nuke things and they (dark elves) looked cute.
We made it to around lvl 12-13 so far.
My question to more experienced players esp. dark wizard and spellhowler players is where to level in duo? what skills to choose?

any replies would be appreciated
at the level you are now DE swamps and level on Festering Bats. then at around 15/15 go into south part of swamplands for red-eyed bats and dark horrors. 18-20 Spiders nest. At 20 the Eyes outside Dion are awesome xp (as long as you can afford D jewellary)

I don't think nuker duo's work that well as the whole idea of nuking is dropping your target in 1-2 or 2-3 shots. Have you consider SE SH duo? that would work out much better, and SE's are much more fun then some people say..
If you go SH/SE then one of you wont be doing much apart from supporting the other one, which you might find abit boring. Depends on what you like to play though.
Basically do what Mizrim said for levelling. Your best bet will always be mobs that you can 2 hit (1 nuke each). At higher levels if you both go sh you will want to find a se to trio with to get max xp.

As for skills, sleep is abit rubbish now and you wont really need it so i would personally not bother with it. Heal is not really worth it as potions are better than your heals. Battle heal it might be worth getting a couple of levels, in case of emergencies. The ice spell, cant remember what its called, is pretty rubbish after level 20 so forget about that 2. Shield and might are also not worth it at your level as the helpers give you better shield. Poison (normal and aoe) is not that good either, gone are the days when it was useful, as you will just nuke mobs to death.
SH/SH duos should be fine. Maybe not super efficient compared to solo or SE/SH, but certainly more fun than SE/SH (for the person who'd be playing the SE). Just find mobs that need 2 shots, or solo in party and get party bonus one shotting everything. At higher levels you will be 2 shotting, though.
ping-pong anyone?
For now, just clear the newbie zones... should be clear sailing to 20 just in the DE newbie zone... do all the quests and collect as much money as possible. The quests which give you freebie spiritshots are highly recommended. The "shroom" quest (available at level 8) is also highly recommended.

-Get the best No-grade Matk weapon you can afford.. first priority.
-Get Devotion set second priority... that 15% cast speed bonus is just too nice to pass up for a Dark Elf, indeed you will probably wear all the way to 40.
-Get yourself a nice x2 spiritshot D grade weapon once past 20. Yes, I know you can get higher Matk with a 3x weapon, but you really are better off spending 200 adena per kill than 300 adena per kill. If you use your head and fight 2-hit mobs with an x2 spiritshot weapon, you can make money just by killing things. If you use a x3 weapon, you will sometimes lose money.
-20-25 can be easily done close to gludio/gludin find some mobs and flatten them... look for two-nuke kills. Generally, nything that takes you 3+ nukes per 1x HP is not worth the trouble.

-Find mobs that are "weak to wind"... pretty much anything floating or flying is usually "weak to wind". Just look for the the symbol in the target descriptors. Once in the mid 2x range, you might head down to the "wastelands" and pick up the quest for the floating eyes/basilisk quest. The result is a bunch of 2-hit "beholder" type mobs which are weak to wind and that give decent XP. Make sure you have decent jewels, as they nuke reasonably well. (Giran jewelry shop sells elven jewels which are D-grade or 20th level+and quite nice... but see if you can find someone sellign them in town for cheaper)

Wastelands will take you to 30-35th level easily.

Note there are many other paths, including hitting a catacomb/necropolis after 20. With TWO dark wizards, you very well might be able to handle the 4x HP mobs. These can be great XP, but will require practice... and you really will want a healer of some sort if possible. Practice ping-ponging the aggro of the mob back and forth so that neither of you takes much damage.

That can work well but you need to rethink how you lvl.

If you can find mobs where you can 2 hit them then one of you does the first hit and immediately takes a completely different mob. Only hitting once before you find another one. The second player then finishes this off.

I've also done this with a silver ranger where he would hit once or twice and then go find another while I finished it off. This can be done extremely fast. So fast that the silver ranger and I would invite to melee whose job it was was just to get mobs and bring it in range. We would then finish them while they got more. They actually had to beg for a break as we would go extremely fast.

That was in the forsaken plain area outside Giants Cave. A little ways away from you. But if you can find an area with a high spawn rate you should be fine.

Inside the School of dark arts might work. Also, inside the elven fortress (you will have to travel there) is very good. However, if you die in the elven fortress you will appear in Dark Elf Village and not Light Elf village.

(also, remember, in this game, you kite your mobs if you can't kill them by the time they reach you. So many new dark elf wizards stand there (like in other games) and take the beating).

skills you don't really need? Well, the serivitors (summons) you will never use. They can come in handy in a few instances but quite frankly they just slow you down, take xp, and then (because you aren't a summoner until lvl 40 - should you go that route - if they die, you have to wait on the timer to summon them again.

Poison doesn't seem to be useful anymore. A long time ago we would poison slow moving mobs and just keep moving around finding more to poison, all the while reapplying the poison to the mobs we had in tow. They would eventually die in huge groups and the process would continue. Now that doesn't seem viable as there are no more slow moving mobs (they sped up their run speeds).

Curse chaos isn't useful. Sleep isn't what it used to be (used to be able to cast if faster. I'd still take it as it can come in handy.

Make sure you eventually get Body to Mind and Corpse Life Drain as that is the method which will help you level without resting for significant periods of time.

Double nuker duo is pretty decent, find 2shot or 1shot mobbs to hunt basically.

AT lvl14+ go down to under gludin and nuke the bears there unthil your close to 20, this might require some good wpns thou, long time since i played without top NG gear so i dont know.

But they are good xp, also spiders there are good but they poison so bring antidotes. And if it requires more then 2 shots (1 shot each), change area ;)

when you get to around 30+ perhaps 35+ depending on gear, i suggest field of silence down at heine area, to the west where the 2 fields meet you find a place where lots of lizard shamans and ogres spawn. The ogers are MAD xp for nukers. Should be 1 shotting these ;)
Also - what server are you on? If you are Franz let me know - I can send some NG stuff your way. Also repeat all the money quests as many times as you can - by the time you hit 21 - you should have 500K to your name after costs - even without a twinked out toon.
Thank you all for nice and informative replies.
We decided to stay on our path to SHs. As some of you mentioned there might be less fun for one of us playing SE.
We are progressing through DE starter lands and planning to go check areas around Gludin and Dion.
So far so good ... Couple of deaths here and there when trying to master ping-pong and the usual where do we get more adena but we're enjoying it anyways.
the DE exit quest is particulary good, 100,000 adena :)

I have a 76 Stormscreamer as my main. I do a lot of pvp and a DE mage is fun, but you are primarily a debuffer then kill type nuker, rather than a straight up pound down damage. In other words 1v1 vs a sps or sorc you will not be able to keep up becuase you cast so much slower. So if you are going to be into pvp at higher levels roll a spellsinger. I sometimes wish that I chose a sps early on, but I like the unique abilities of the DE nuker.

For raiding and PVE the spellhowler is the best nuker hands down.

For leveling always use your shadowspark/flare spell to end since you can get nice overhits (extra XP) for every kill. Some people complain that you get extra XP and dont get extra Sp so you get SP starved as you level, but just get the levels you'll get the SP you need, its ridiculous to turn down extra XP.

One good way to level later on is with the curse death link spell. You have to get as low as you can get in hit points to really get the power out of the spell. Keep casting body to mind until you can't cast it anymore because you are so low in HP and use CDL. You can one hit mobs even at higher levels.

If you are not CDLing you still always want to use body to mind at least once for evey nuke. Then you use vamp claw or corpse drain to get your hp back up. If you use body to mind consistantly, you will never run out of mana.

As far as spots to level, there have been to many changes for me to tell you a good spot. It all depends on gear and buffs though. And half the fun is finding areas on your own and exploring. So just go out there.

As far as duoing, if you duo with another nuker, assign one person to pick targets. The other person should assist the targeter, and not try to select the mob. In other words use the assist command or right click the targeter's name in the party list. This will ensure you stay on the same mobs or dono't pull different mobs at the same time.

As far as duoing, having an SE is the best help. Empower is essential once you get past 30. The SE will be busy recharging, you can also get into 2x or 4x mobs areas and have the SE root while the nuker nukes. I know several live SE's and they enjoy the class. But one way or another you will need the buffs.

Another good duo that is fun is the bladedancer/nuker duo. Once the baldedancer gets dance of mystic and concentration the nuker damage output rises. Its hard for the BD to keep up with the nuker, but if you use the BD to bring in extra mobs it works quite nicely.

the DE exit quest is particulary good, 100,000 adena :)

what do you mean by exit quest?

by exit quest I mean last quest available to you in the starter village. For DE this is a level 21 quest called Dangerous Suduction. DE's have the best exit quest imo

ah, ok. This must be new as I don't remember it in prelude. Or I just missed it.
I did not read all the suggestions but have you think to try Nuker/Summoner thats got to be a good combination, as I heard the Phantom summoner can actually duo with any class quite efficiently
