Mistryl: No content changes will be made during today's maintenance. The development team is aware of the issues you mentioned and they will address them as soon as possible. Thanks!
Maintenance within days of an overhaul would be a good sign of faulty project management.
Not really, with the amount of people on a server the log files would have to be cleaned out every week otherwise they would lag the server to hell. That and major database backups are made.
First MMO I've seen that had to take the server down to do a database backup. An server of this magnitude should have enough redundancy that they won't have to actually take the server down to backup the database (cloning, for instance - and among other methods). Same for cleaning out the log files. Most enterprise-level databases allow it to be backed up without even stopping the database server, or detaching the database. Me wonders what they use on their DB server... SQLite, MySQL, Firebird???
I'm sure they can afford Oracle, DB/2, MSSQL, or PostgreSQL/EnterpriseDB give their income from the game. They should not have to shut the servers down for this type of "trivial" maintenance.
ive seen several MMO's have down time.
most say for maint purposes....i say they are doing thier part in greenhouse emmisions by turning off equipment for a minimun of 30 minutes once a week.....:P

they use MSSQL, probably 2005 enterprise edition
also, tuesdays it the day that the admins get to bring soda and food into the server room, so they usually spill stuff, which gives us lag

Most maint are not empty. If you check the log, things change almost every downtime, even if it's fixing a texture, changing text, etc. With all the testing, it OUGHT to take 2 weeks to gather enough reason for downtime.
*thinks back really hard to a class I had a year ago*
**** it I can't remember the exact reason, but I know they have to do it, and it's very important....crap I really need to go hit the books some....maybe if DM shows up he'd tell ya why!!
Tho I know it has to do with raid hardrives, And they have to be cooled off.
