If you want something other than money from this quest you need to complete the other quest Rafforty offers. When you complete that quest he will give you more options to trade for. (The other side of truth.)
As for turning silver crystals to black it's pretty much just random % no matter what you choose. [~25%], although L2's random numbers mean that this usually ends up being in the 20-24% range overall. (I'm still doing this one...)
