herb and potion drops- is there a general rule?

Player Questions Started Last reply 20 posts
Hi Board- just wondering if anybody has come up with a general rule-of-thumb on what the conditions must be for a mob to qualify as one that drops the instant effect items (herbs and potions)?

The C5 Update notes say.....

"Instant effect items are only dropped in areas set as solo hunting grounds."

Huh? What is a solo hunting ground? Dragon Valley doesn't qualify? Or was this an oversight? And I think the same thing happened out at AI- no herb/potion drops, but I could be wrong on that one.

Anyway, just looking for some feedback from the experts. Thanks.
Actually certain mobs in DV do drop herbs...

"Solo hunting ground" is whatever the devs feel should drop herbs...

No it doesn't have to make sense...
Oh- didn't know that there are drops further in. I have not made it past all the Cave Servant skeleton mobs at the front yet. But was hoping for a little help from them!

that about sums it up
2x hp lvl 80+ mobs dropped herbs
1x hp mobs didnt
Yes, Varka and Ketra is certainly a solo spot. But for Forbidden Gateway you need to bring a party?

Forbidden Gateway and DV as party spots doesn't make sense to me either. And the Cemetary as a party spot is marginal at best.
To the OP, the only sensible guidelines I have found are: dungeons and multi-HP mobs in open fields seem to always be party spots. However, some areas are also designated as party spots that seem to make no sense.
Hunter Gargoyles drop them and they're found in 2 places..
DV and Outlaws.. they're two completely different types of places. NC just made up the whole "Solo" area. Group 1/2 HP mobs drop them and they're not very "Solo"able, neither are most of the mobs in VoS (unless you're buffed to the bones, then you're not *really* soloing...).
The general rule is: if a healer has a chance to exp there (either in a group or solo), the place doesn't drop herbs.
truthful comment, Krissa.

I wonder if the addition of these herb/potion drops has added benefit or created a detriment to this game, now that there is less need to party. For melee toons I guess it's a bonus, but for support classes not so much? I don't know.

From mid 5x to early 6x there is indeed a break point.
You can solo easily (as ong as you have mana) in DV as a priest but the undead do not drop herbs...

Earlier than that and after that it isn't too hard to find herb dropping undead all the way up to 72-73ish.
And which herb-dropping spots aren't night-only and don't contain aggro or social non-undeads?
Forest of mirrors 40 - mid 5x
avoid the lizardmen, kill the fields of ghosts and don't hit the mirrors.
The ghosts help each other, but the mirrors don't help ghosts and aren't aggro.
You have root that works at this point for adds if necessary.
Ghosts are pink at 40, but very VERY easy kills for an elven elder. (Two bsps nukes and one swat with an unenchanted top C mage weapon + demon robes without empower.. EEs cast this VERY quickly)

Forest of the dead...
Complete fields of undead-only mobs that drop herbs.
There are plenty of aggro and social mobs, but ee/bish also have trance and bishops have hold undead as well...

If you are looking for bot spots that don't have anything aggro I have no idea... then again, if you are single-boxing a healer you can handle a few adds.
40-52 Forest of Mirrors
52-62 Fields of Massacre (Wretched archers and Doom Knights)

Both drop herbs, but after 62 i dont know either where to level solo :(

Spots, please. With undead-only mobs (no demons, please).

As an EE, I don't use trance on undeads when I solo. Waste of time and MP, unless you are dumb enough to pull more than 2 stunners on you.

Doom Knights don't drop herbs.
Krissa... there are entire fields of undead in FotD.
In these place the mobs are ALL undead... avoid the vampires because they are considered demons.

Fields of massacre mid 5x to 62-63 do indeed drop herbs and most of them are undead but they toss in a few contructs (liches) who help... try Doom Scouts who do drop herbs and who are definitely undead. I didn't list this because of the helping Liches who are not undead... but its viable for someone who is single-boxing.

Where exactly are these spots in FotD at daylight?

It isn't. If you are single-boxing, you are better off killing Doom Knights on an all-undead plateau. Even if it means 3-4-shotting and spending most of your time on MP rests.

Bone sweeper and Co groups...
Bone Sweepers are humanoids, not undeads.

At this rate, soon you will be asking me to level your priest for you...

Lets start with ONE spot.

There is a hill behind the wizard who hands out the 63+ quests at the port in spot. Climb it... during the day the mobs that spawn there are ALL undead. The spawns are lesser during the day and more during the night, but it should still be decent hunting day or night.

Note the mobs despawn from time to time, and will port to you... so make sure you are paying attention or you will waste money and mana or die.... when you get the hang of the area its solid XP. (you will have downtime unless you are a bishop and bring a recharger)

At 67 or so this spot will start drying up, and you will have to find the second one like it which is a bit harder to get the hang of as you have to move to an adjoining field during the evening. No I am not giving the spoiler for this one away.

Hmm, well perhaps for lesser players you might be right.

While it is certainly not ideal, killing those liches isn't really that hard even for an EE/Bishop at the right level. Most of the time you can avoid them if you are aware of your surroundings.

Honestly, I'd rather have to melee a bit than stand/sit around longer (which you will for Doom Knight area).

Like I said, that period is not ideal.
