Please explain the pet classes

After reviewing the pet classes, it seems they get screwed. I mean ....pets that take XP and require a large number of expensive crystals....doesn't sound like fun to me. Is there something I am missing that makes them good?
The ability to truely solo impossible areas. My friend is a warlock and he can solo the karik donut in AL with only self buffs. I dont know any other class that can do that. Maybe a frenzied destroyer?

Edit: he is lvl 68 btw.

summoners have 3 different roles they can play in and out of group, with most setups; summoners are expensive, but VERY powerful.

the phantom summoner has a very high patk summon, soulless. unfortunately, his defence is rather poor. most summoners use this one in spots where herbs drop to just buzz through masses of mobs like pie. in these areas usually the summon can 4-5 hit and the mobs are dead. the Shadow is simliar; its Patk is lower but has insane VR and a bit better Defence. great for soloing in the catacombs. the nightshade can turn the Phantomsummoner into a healer; the cubics provided by the PS is invaluable to melee groups.

the ES is nuking and AOE oriented. i wont explain it in detail but instead of being a healer, you can be an aoe master or a nuker or a Caster buffer.

the WK is best all around; naturally high HP, good buffs, para cubic, it all works wonderfully. the archers love cat queen buffs too.

bottom line; what you pay for is uniqueness. there arent that many summoners on any server and those that are, either quit or reroll. it takes a patient hand to play a summoner.
