You can leave messages to other players even though they are not online throught the community server (alt+b) ingame. When the player logs in, a message will appear in the log mentioning he/she has a new message
Go to the options button on the lower right hand side. It will open a menu adn there should be a little mail icon. It might say something like "community" or something like that.
When you write the mail you hit 'Forward' to send it.
can you send items? I have a buddy who has left the game and wants to give me some gear to get me started, but Im not sure how to get it since we are online at different times.

No you cannot. He will have to meet you in the game and give them to you personally.
