What is the use of the cougar and buffalo and kookabura pets? They get 1 shotted by lvl 14 mobs...they heal so little.... Plus i see they have skillpoints, yet no skills to spend them on...

thanx, Firza

A GOOD WAR SMITH IS AN HONOURABLE ONE :)
Very useless, IMO. I got one to go with my WC. It did't heal worth squat at 50s level, and I had to rez it constantly. So, it sits on the shelf, so to speak.
Pets pretty useless from my experiance. I wouldnt waste your time.

The baby pets aren't very useful due to the C3 changes to mob/pet aggro. (Mobs tend to target them first/randomly now, instead of ignoring them completely until they attack.)

Still, they aren't completely useless. I use one with my SH sometimes when I BtM to save a bit on heal rates. (When pots fail to drop and MP is so low that I have to stop the BtM/Nuke/CLD chain.)

I also use it with my Destro in catacombs when I solo for manor/hunt recipes. I set the little guy in the hall, and pull nearby. As long as I don't run out when he's healing he never gets aggro and I last longer without spamming pots quite so much.

There are a couple spots with NO aggro mobs in the game. One of these I like to manor in. When I do that, I pull out the Cougar and use it solely to slow my leveling down to make the most of that spot. (-10% xp)

My Dwarves like to level using wind hatchlings, and my OL would cry if his wolf wasn't there to keep him company...the wolf is now L57 and my first Wind is now a Strider. =D
Pain, I must be missing something. The pet I tried couldn't even keep a noticable fraction of my Warcrier's HP charged in EV. How much contribution do you get to the large healing sink on a Destroyer in a place like the Cats? (FYI, to use the pet with my Destroyer/WC combo in the Cats was exactly one of my hopes.)

Don't expect the baby pets to 'heal' you, what they do is reduce the healing you need.

For my (43-45) Destroyer, I have ~3K HP and the Cougar (L36) only heals 39 HP per. (Without Beast shots!!!) While I'm getting beat on by mobs, that isn't a huge amount, but it can be the difference between using a couple of heal pots during pulls or not having to use one at all. It's extra helpful if you got added (unwanted) aggro and the HoT effect of a pot isn't quite enough to out heal damage while Frenzy/Guts is running. Also, with 'Relax' my regen is ~40 per tick. An extra 39 HP every 2nd tick is a huge increase in my passive resting regen. (If you can afford the beast shot spam then their heals are even better...)

I've managed to survive having 3 4x HP mobs beating on me down there and using just normal Heal pots, the extra heals the baby gives makes a huge difference. (Your still going to need to rest after, but you'll avoid death.) Just make sure you stick above the 75% HP threshold when pulling...drop below and your baby will run out to heal you and that's instant death for him if he takes aggro....plus he 'stops' wherever he is after he casts his heal until he tries to heal you again. So either make sure your in range of his heals if your hurt, or only run out to pull when you know your HP won't drop below until you get the mobs back near him again.

This is all while in Worshippers Necro trying to get a Dwarven Chain Boots recipe to drop. (1.6% drop from Hallowed Priests) Those Catacomb Livionia mobs are the biggest pains down there.

I'd prefer to use a Wolf instead for damage, (HE doesn't run out to heal you during a pull!) but Wolves have ridiculously bad Mdef and magic using mobs will rotate their attacks between attackers. (Hatchlings have fair pdef/mdef comparatively.)

A wolf with good gear and a couple of levels near/above the mobs does some excellent damage. I've manored/farmed in Heretics with one (no mage mobs) with good results.

No matter which pet you use though, you are *still* going to have downtime in a place without herb drops though.

I'm trying to level again before I go back down (didn't get the recipe yet) so if I remember I'll try to replay myself down there next time.
