We seem to be in the midst of a little crisis at the moment with our management. A lack of communication you could say. Anyway I encourage you to give the game a full try and don't mind the comments that its a dead game... the community will live through it, and development would probably never be affected by it anyway.
As for server, the servers are in order in the log-in screen from oldest to newest (1 being oldest, 10 being newest). The older ones are likely to have a larger player base. Some of the other guys and gals can help you with server info better than me but this is as much as I know: Teon/Franz are Euro-timed. There's a bunch of Greeks on Devianne. And Lionna is the unofficial "RP" Server (the small community that it is).
Game is almost dead. Return while you can. Almost in every server, 1/2 ppl quit already.
Exactly what I'm talking about... The statistic of "1/2" cannot be proven in anyway, it's only a misguided perception... and also this attitude does nothing to help the problem.
So..... again, I encourage you to try the game. We need the new players.
If you're into the RP thing, Lionna is the server for you. If you prefer the Euro time-zones, there's Franz and Teon set up to serve. If you're really into nasty PvP, I guess that's what Bartz is for.
I'd suggest looking around on the server-specific forums.
bartz is the crazyist one im on it and i love it u got it all RP/pvp/pve everything u can think of u most players on it as will but if u dont like pvp then u might want to go to another sever cuz bartz u most liek be pvp for lvl 1-80 ^_^ its alot of fun

Bartz also has trouble with punctuations and run on sentences. If you can read what he wrote then Bartz is the place for you.
Hey, **** it! :p I play on Bartz. It's not a bad server by any means. Its one of the most populated, and you can almost always start a fight if you want. I enjoy it because there are alot of people there. Bartz has its RPers (they're like vampires...they only come out at a certain time of day it seems), PVPers, and PVE-ers.
BTW: I totally agree with what Nerukan has tried to explain here and indeed, propagating negative views over speculation which is not yet a proven fact doesn't help the game at all. If that is how you, the one posting that opinion, sees it...Fine, then don't play it anymore if it so upsets you. But do not discourage people who would like to start the game. It's still there and we, the ones who still play, would like to see more newcomers join.

Welcome to Lineage 2.
Don't listen to the doom mongers. The game is still the best out there and for a new player, there's a whole host of fantastic adventures out there for you.
When you get the server list up, you are given the ping rate. The lower the rate, the less likely you will suffer lag from ping. Server usage also has a bearing on the matter as does hardware.
Hindemith has a good friendly community for the new user. I have started other servers too and they are all friendly too. Bartz has a more established community and Franz, being the newest server, has the newest community. It does also suffer from a lot of bots. (Script/macro driven automated farmers).
You have plenty of options as you can create 7 chars on each of the servers. Possibly the easiest to start is a Human fighter and Talking Island is quite easy to find your way around.
A few hints.
Type ! to shout out.
Type "name to private message the player called name.
Commands can be done by mouse click but also via the keyboard. Commands start with / so the command unstuck is entered as /unstuck and will get you out of a dodgy scenery glitch but also acts as a 5 minute delayed teleport back to town. A scroll of escape takes you back to town in about 10 seconds.
Think of a name for your char as its surprising just what names have gone.
Enjoy the game and regardless of what server you choose, don't be afraid to ask for help.

This is a international server. We know our language and a little of english. And you? Only know english? Dont try be smart because you are not :)

I would pick a server that best fits your timezone, Teon or Franz if you're from Europe..(I'd recommend Teon ^^) dunno about the others :P Just a friendly warning: this game is not for the weak or the impatient, it takes hard work and dedication to be succesful and to get high level/good gear, expect to spend months or years developing your character(s). Whatever server you decide to go, I suggest you find a friendly clan as soon as possible. Clans are the salt of this game and can provide you with valuable information, help you level and get equipment. If you decide on Teon, follow the link on my signature ;)
I just started playing and I chose Bartz to play on and so far I love it, there's plenty of people playing and the community is great *cough* join bartz *cough*
This really is a great game, don't worry about ppl saying it's dying. But anyway, i've been playing off-and-on ever since open beta (over 3 years), and it's still a great game. Bartz has been my server the whole time, and i love it! (joooooiiinn baaaaaaaartzzzzzzz!!!!)
