I'm wanting to make a nuker that I'll use to supply my dwarf with drop-only materials. I'm also using 2 dd's, just wanted the nuker for variety. So which nuker should I use that will kill white mobs fast and consistently with litte downtime. I'll also be playing solo. Thanks.
SH
SH all the way, low cost, high DD, very straightforward.

SH

SH
SH (Spell Howler)
SH :p
+1 for SH. (and me :p )
Cool, thanks for the help
Necro.

Necro > SH for PvE, cost and everything, especially at and after level 52.

CDL with half HP > Death Spike. You do not need to you Death Spike to level, and if a 2 shottable mob kills you at half HP - you deserve to die.

If the 4 levels you have to use Death Spike are so expensive that you will choose a less imba class than Necro, then have fun playing an SH.

But atm, my Necro is equally expensive to an SH, and levels fast enough.

It was an SH that "turned me on" to CDL at half HP a few levels ago. Then I tried it on my roomate's necro that just got to 52 and it works at those levels too - with Demon Robe Set even (-270 HP).

Cost is not an issue with Necro. Only real PvE advantage that SH has is an overhit nuke. The Necro's PvE advantage is its versatility and it's ability to function outside of the "two-shot kill" category of playstyles.

If you make friends with an SE/EE/PP, you can do hold small cata rooms with the Necro, too :) I made me over a mil AA doing that last week :)
SH: Higher INT, 2 elemental nukes so dont listen to the noob who say necro is better.
SH can CDL too, and has higher INT. The advantage of necro here, is higher HP.

SH: Higher INT, 2 elemental nukes so dont listen to the noob who say necro is better.

Necro > SH because Necro and SH will basically level in the same places until 71+ and then in the same places until level 80. Seriously, there is really no reason to level in a place with Dark Resist mobs, unless with an SE/PP/EE bot in a small catacomb room, where cursed man eats them alive (something an SH cannot do) - and gives you higher XP gain and more cash than two shotting in a field anyways.

SH has two elemental resist nukes, but apart from the overhit, they really aren't needed in most XP spots. SH and Necro can CDL, and Necros higher HP makes up for the INT advantage that SH has - so they are on par. SH only has advantage when using their regular nukes on wind weak mobs, since the MP cost of Hurricane is = that of CDL at same level. SH's Overhit nuke is a Dark Attack, like CDL.

Ivory Tower (to 48'ish) > Outlaw Forest (to 52'ish) > Valley of Saints (to 70'ish) > Mineral Springs (to 80)

Where in any of these places does the SH's Elemental nukes lend it enough of an advantage over a 1/2 HP CDL'ing necro to say it is > a Necro in PvE?

I know that SH has DS and CDL, but Necro has TP/Servitor, DS, and CDL and this lends it alot more PvE versatility than an SH. SH is a tunnel-vision class compared to a Necro. Necro is a much better PvE class unless you are content with being cookie-cutter and are too lazy to find other ways to get XP/Adena (better XP/Adena in some instances).

The post that really jumped at me was:

SH all the way, low cost, high DD, very straightforward.

And in comparison to Necro it simply isn't that much of a one-sided comparison. Necro can be just as cheap as SH, if played correctly, and is a much more powerful PvE class. Things don't have to be straightforward, people just have to learn how to play the class they choose.

Necro still > SH for PvE - and the comparison is the same with every other nuker, AFAIK.

Saying SH have higher INT is like me saying that Necro cast faster when we all know Necro/SH/Sorc will all be 2 shotting mobs regardless of INT differences at B Grade and above.
Best experience I have ever got on my Necro was with Death Spike in FoD. Most catacombs are dark resist, so using death spike there would not be a very smart thing. The summons eat up more experience than they get, and are much harder to use. On top of all that, as far as I know, all flying things are weak to wind, which helps the howler too. There are just way too many leveling spots that have dark resist :(
Honestly, the OP cannot go wrong with either Necro or SH for solo PvE.

The difference in PvE solo is tiny... it depends on where you want to go... SH indeed have a few more options, but more often than not it makes little difference.

If we are talking overall... then necro is better by far...
If we are talking just solo PvE... then SH and Necro are pretty close.

SH: Higher INT, 2 elemental nukes so dont listen to the noob who say necro is better.

I second that, as I don't think he read the opening post very well, the intent was to have a mats collecting mage, so it must be cost efficient, taking out a summon and using transfer pain + throwing bones at people is far from cost efficient.
Ya, I'll be hunting specific mobs trying to get items such as recipes and key mats like sword blades. Basically, what I'm wondering is that, if I hunt (insert random white mob here) all day, which class will let me kill them the fastest and most efficiently. More kills = more chances to get key mats. Thanks guys.

Edit- I'll also be solo close to 100% of the time, using whatever self buffs the class has and any buffs that I can grab while in town.
For what you are aiming for, SH will be the best choice for you and cost efficent. Sounds like you want to *make* money....summons cost crystals, death spike (low lv nercos MAIN attack) costs bones, throw in shots....and you defeat the purpose of why your making this mage. SH has death spike too...so if your only after a recipe and not boxing, death spike does save alot of mp (can always be cheap and cdl at 1/2 life for about the same dmg). Downtime is minium with the SH as well, can btm and regen hp by draining mobs and corpse drain during your "downtime"...like killing 2 birds with one stone. You definitely do not want to go sps/sorc for this, both are very mp/support dependent.
Only drawback of a solo SH with no buffers is your slow cast speed, and you're a glass cannon, hardly " a tunnel-vision class compared to a Necro" considering you have more options (ie dark resist mobs, more offensive spells, ect ect :P). Dont get me wrong, necro is amazing for leveling, if you can afford bones and summons its great, but for variety and mat hunts, sh wins here.
With acumen 2 pots, he should be okay. It's nothing spectacular, but it gets the job done :)
Level 70 SH with BTB 5 and +4 CON has 3622 HP, Necro with BTB 5 and +4 CON has 3739 HP. The HP difference isn't big enough to compensate for SH's higher INT when using CDL, so for your hunting needs SH is better. Necro is great too, but simply not as cost effective as SH.
my vote is on sorceres, they only have 1 skill :p, just hold f1 for prominence and select a target , u can use the f2 for s/socialsad f3/socialwaiting.... f12 for mysterious potion.

Now this is a post I can get behind!
SH is better if you want the lower cost. Necros are great fun, but Cursed bones and all the Crystals for summons add up alot, so its not a profitable class. If you dont care of cost and just wanta kill superduper fast, then necro would work great.

But from how it sounds, SH would be good for you.
If you are hunting for mats and recs you'd probably do better leveling a spoiler on side of what else you already have. A clannie just leveled a BH and a WS to C grade and he is having no problems getting his mats and recipes.

But of course, we help him when he needs (always a cata party for him, etc.).

if you feel like you need to roll more toons just to get mats and recipes, maybe it's time you made some friends.
SH better for PVE IMO.

Level much faster: almost all of my kills are over-hit. At level 68 and in the highest VoS area,I alternate between 1 shot nuke + 1 shot over-hit nuke and 1 shot nuke + 1 shot pre-40 skill over-hit....always over-hit

Much cheaper: only use Death Spike occasionally because we have so many nkews we can use....so few cursed bones, made about 150 mil net from 40-68 so far wityh my SH.

More nukes: sames nukes as Necro (CDL, Death Spike, Vampiric Claws) and much more...however, Necro's summons are better anbd they have more debuffs.

Necro are better for PvP, there is no doubt about it.

Play Necro or SH and I believe that you will have a good Nuker anyway, but SH is faster and cheaper to level than Necro.

Tren,
A a SH you can hunt non-stop using Body to Mind and Corpse Life Drain. To paraphrase you the SH is more efficient when used properly. The option to use an attack that is not dark based is nice to have so you have the choice to xp in different locals. Ideally both Necros and Spellhowlers want to hunt dark weak mobs but there are a lot of wind weak mobs. These are good for shooting one time with no sps and then once with sps for the kill. Or use regular sps instead of bsps on each shot. There are a ton of wind weak mobs that are just not a 2 shot option to the Necro.
Also, reasons for hunting in a place with dark resist mobs; war tags, other people in the spot you wanted, quests, getting drops that are specific to a certain monster, just to name a few.

Yes, I mentioned the overhit.

There are no dark weak mobs that I've seen in VoS. Have you seen any Wind weak mobs?

I go down to 800-1000 HP and use CDL with the Necro. I can hunt about as non-stop as an SH can. I get same levels of B2M and CLD, and CDL has same MP cost as Hurricane and less than an overhit nuke. Like 90% of the other nukers, I have an SE to buff/recharge me.

I haven't used Death Spike since I seen the other SH doing the same thing and he told me about it. Even using Death Spike, I was able to afford my A grade by selling my B grade gear + mats + quests + buy low sell high, etc. I sold my Homu to get a cheap low A grade weapon, then Enchanted it to +3 to get same M.Atk rating - I wanted the PvP bonus/diff look.

I can XP on 4x HP mobs in Apostate and keep a small/medium room clear NP, and the cost of the servitor is easily made up for in drops (seal stones/etc.). I sell AA at a 2:1 price which means they sell isntantly to other players. I still have over 2.5k C Cry from blowing up Homus on OE attempts :)

I make 150% of what I spend on an average day (i.e. I just threw the mats in warehouse, and didn't sell them) using CDL this way.

You can level from 0 to 80 and not have to touch a dark-resist mob.

If the Necro has good gear, he can level from 48-52 in one evening and on one load of supplies in VoS - at which time he can retire it and the demon set and CDL for low cost.

35% of the mobs I kill with CDL this way (Eye, Flash, first form of Blade of Splendor) are 1 shot with CDL.

So I spend less money then a same-level SH using CDL this way than they do using 2 nukes.

They may level faster with overhit, but I will spend less, unless thye choose to level the same way in which case the cost is roughly the same for both classes.

I will be 1 shotting all these mobs with CDL by the time I get to level 68 (at which time I will start doing it with < 200 HP, sicne it will be relatively riskless - wont' have to worry about mobs casting poison with 5 HP and getting it off before I get off CDL).

Like I said, it's all about how you play the class. If played properly, the Necro can be cheaper and more efficient than the SH. We don't have to worry about OverHit because we don't get one.

My adena fields usually grow by 1M+ an hour, and the quest in VoS gives me another couple hundred K adena to throw in there (repeatable and takes ~1H to do it). Close to 2 Mil an hour counting mats and blades. 148 Mil = a 2 weeks or so with my playtimes (8-10+ hours a day), if even that.

I only keep about 200 cursed bones on me for those "Oh *****!" situations.
SH, especially if cost is a concern.
Trensharo, that is all true, but not everyone is good at making money, sadly. Necro costs a little bit more, SH costs a little bit less. Necro is a lot better in PvP (and is actually fun) and SH is a lot worse. If you don't care about PvP at all, do the SH... but if you care about it, even just a little, I would consider Necro!

Wind vortex is worth it though! :)

And if you go for 78, it's not so bad compared to 76 to 77.

Yes. It has been painful. Mostly because I'm leveling up my SE and PP at the same time. It goes pretty fast when I keep them OOP. I keep thinking I want to get my SE to 76 for elemental protection but lately I've concluded it's probably not worth it. I have VR4 already for my Destroyer sub so I might quit leveling my buffers soon.

I'm pretty tired of the Hot Springs now. I've been there for 3 levels now.

Tren, there are over 50 mobs that are weak to wind that are over lvl 40. Now it is true that VOS is a great place to lvl a mage. However, I am getting the impression that you just pve. 'Cause if you pvp'd at all VOS is NOT the place to hang out and xp for any length of time. Which brings me to my next question. 148 million in 2 weeks at 2 million an hour comes out to 6 hours per day, every day, no breaks. No going to town for anything (mats) or dropping any off or selling items to the shop. No other folks coming by to randomly pk you for the heck of it. No PVP (I play game for the pvp). 8 hours of sleep, 8 hours for work and 6 hours of play leaves you with 2 hours to ****, shower and shave, shop for food, eat or whatever 5 days of the week. Unless of course you are still in high school in which case forget I even looked your way.
I'm halfway through College, have already done 4 years in the military, etc. I play more than 6 hours a day :) High School was what I would now consider a long time ago. But nice attempt at a ******ed insult.

Read what you quoted...

So yes, I make really good money using CDL with 900 HP in Valley of Saints and getting mats like Dama blades, Wizard Tear Blades, Asofe, Mold Glue, etc. I got over 400k + Dama/Guardian Sword blade + other expensive mats in 1 hour earlier with a 52 BD in group with me leaching half the adena and XP earlier. You don't even have to play the market, just get it while you get XP :)

I have 14-16 hours on average to do everything else I need to do on a given day, and my quality of life outside of the game is as normal as anyone else's.

I play 7 days a week.

FYI, there are areas that are very low traffic. And who said anything about PvP, That. This thread is about the best PvE mage derailed into why SH is > Necro for PvE and vice versa... I don't think ayone said anything about PvP, and please tell me where you'd be other than VoS grinding if you had to worry about PvP. At least as a Necro I can pop a corrupted man and activate TP and have at least a chance to live if someone ganks me while fighting a mob (My PvP skill bar is always up). What is the SH gonna do?

My SE can carry almost as much as I can (+CON Tatoo), I trade my mats to her every buffround.

6-8 hours of grinding out of every day's playtime (8-10+ hours) means that my mats pay for my ABSpS and all the adena goes in the bank. I don't use cursed bones to level, aforementioned.

BTW - I can carry close to 10k ABSpS on me, I put 5k on My SE. (Edited cause I just restocked :p) And everytime I rebuff I trade mats/sps between us. If my roomate is in the area leveling with me, I load him up too! :) I go to town every morning, sometimes every other morning. I log in/out at my leveling spot. This is not rocket science.

And to the person I quoted in the post you quoted:

Tren, You seem upset. Not my intent. I'm not here to besmirch your age. So to stay on topic, the pvp side of the conversation arises as there is no place in VOS that is not patrolled on my server. So if you are in a large clan with a full /clanwarlist you cannot pve for any kind of extended period in VOS. No matter the time either.

As for the amount of time that you spend playing this game, who am I to say that 56 to 70 hours per week are to many or to few? If you are happy with your quality of life then that is all that counts.

5000 sps is way more than I can carry. I can carry around 1700 along with cp pots, heal pots, etc.... but again I can see that you do not pvp with your character.

If you are looking for an alternative place to xp with your necro/SE go to Monastary of Silence. I go there and solo the Angel groups. You need the SE for the mana but it is about 40k xp per mob, they are weak to dark and it is not as heavily policed by war tags although this last part does not seem to have any meaning for you.

As a final note, when you are going over your accolades "I'm halfway through College, have already done 4 years in the military, etc. I play more than 6 hours a day :) High School was what I would now consider a long time ago. But nice attempt at a ******ed insult." the mere mention of high school lessens the value. 30 years ago? A long time. 20 years ago? A long time. 10 years ago? ehhhh kinda maybe not. 6 years ago? Pfffft! heheh

"Have fun overhitting VoS mobs (level 60+) with level 35 overhit nukes."

Pfffft! heheh

:D
4x HP social mobs that take 15+ nukes to kill is not a better place than VoS - or even as good a place. Been there, tried that.

Yeah, true. Wait till you level up more then they are a lot easier to kill. They take like 6 shots for me. ;)
The KEY would be what mobs is the OP wanting to farm. No offense to Trensharo I liked my SH and when I was playing him I always made atleast 3 times what I spent in shots on a bad day. I would also suggest to the OP that he should hunt mobs that he can kill in 2 hits max.

Very true. I try to make sure that I am getting between 6000 and 7000 xp per shot.
Well I am different here I do not look at xp per shot. I am looking at adena per shot. I will find an area that is cost effiecent and has a chance for some good drops. If I can also get a quest for that area even better. I know when I hit 40 I did under IT even though they were magic resistent the rewards were to good plus I found a quest for there too. That was around late C2 early C3 when I was able to sell SB's for a very nice profit. I also spent time by HV on the bugbears 3mil Brig helms easy profits there.

Another quest that was a must have was the coin quest back in C5 I was selling gold wyvrens for 12-15k each. At lvl 52 I believe I was in the cementary playing with the orcs there. I made a couple mil off that qeust and goood adena from the mobs pus a few whole drops. I also spent alot of time in DV hunting mobs there and the succubus quest. By the time my SH was 61 I had DC boots and gloves ( had these at 55) DC Robe (I got this at 58) failed a craft attempt on a SoM at 60 and ended up buying it at 61.
what lvl/gear u need if u wanna go VoS?
