Im sick and tired of Franz. IMHO 90% of the server is not on that server for entertainment purposes and there is no place for legitimate players anymore. Every cata/necro is more than 95% taken by everyones favorite friends... Many other places too.
Are there any NA servers one can start playing now and get any fun in anymore?
Depending on your definition of fun I sure hope there is a server you like best.
I have been on almost all servers but the favorite friend thing is on all servers so you will have to live with that.
I suggest you read up on the different servers and make a call on that info.
Trying out any server can be an option too. Not a real handy option but that is something I can't help with.
Gustin is not so bot infested.
NoS and Hertics have plenty of room for the casual players to play on.
As a matter of fact, I think NC just had another 'banning day' on Gustin within the last few days. (That or the 'trial' accounts all ran out at once.)
Population of Gustin is fairly steady, although I think we might have more casual players who log on only during the usual 'peak hours'. My own hours are above casual but still highly erratic.
(WOW, I actually crafted some Mithril Gauntlets for someone this week, and it was a request, not an afk shop! And that's an item you can buy from the lux shop to boot!)
Sure we got the usual suspects (Occasional PK's around Dion and 'awfully highlevel noobs'.) but outside of FD in BeastFarm the 'questinables' presence is pretty light in most places when you see it.
The others dont really exist. Franz has the largest you know what population as you've already found out.
I'd pick Bartz or Teon personally. Both have thriving communities and the you know what population isnt as bad as on Franz.

Oh I don't know, I just think that new players want to come in and "see" life. Problem is that the other servers all have very unique, interesting communities but are very lonesome in the new player areas.
The larger the community the more alts. I remember taking a look at Bartz a few times just to see what was going on there and was very surprised at the number of players in Dark Elf village.

Come Dion then you'll see some life, and in Giran it gets bustling obviously.
However on Bartz/Teon/Franz, you'll see people in the starter villages, Gludio, Gludin, etc. Its really just the way it is.... everyone is hopping on the bandwagon to those 3 servers because you want to see Sieges with 300+, not 100.

there's more than that just in our command channel at sieges.
I started playing on Gustin once - became frustrated about farmers and bots
I continued on Teon after it starts - bot and farmer problem was horrible there after some weeks
I started new on the fresh server Franz - Farmers and botters grew like pest plants there.
So my evaluation:
There is no better or worse server like Franz.
As long people buy adena and NCSoft does not ban them immediately, and people are allowed to bot all the day and night long, there will be no "good" servers.
