Hey all,
Just started playing L2 a few weeks ago and am near 40 so wanted to see if I should go either plainswalker or silver ranger for my first class choice. I'm really interested in plainswalker but if its going to suck then I'll go silver ranger. Anyways if someone can give me the run down on the differences between the two besides one is ranged and one is melee I'd appreciate it.
Also, can someone explain subclassing in a bit more detail for me. My understanding of it is once I hit 75 I'd be able to change to a new class starting at 40, but couldn't use the skills from my main class without switching back.
Also, what happens when you get two or even all three classes to 75, do you have to go to the village npc to switch classes to access the other abilities and loose the current abilities making it where you basically have a character that acts like two seperate characters? If so I'm failing to see the point behind subclassing besides being able to eventually be a noblesse upon completion...
anyways, as much information as I can be given would be great, I've read through the library on this thing and am still looking for more information on which class to go with, and how exactly the subclass system works.
Obviously I have a long ways to go before the actual subclass should concern me but I want to gain as much information as I can to plan the path of my toon.
There is no "point" in subclassing other than noblesse, and of course getting to play a character that looks different than one would expect. It's an extension of gameplay, and of course a way to get more playtime when your alt slots are full. You seem to have the jist of it. I do believe you need to be subclassed in order to get third class.
I'm not so sure about the whole archer vs dagger thing, but it's safe to say that in PvP, a dagger is all about skills, while an archer is about the natural crits of standing there and shooting.
Archers are more expensive at low, but cheaper at high levels.
Archers are more MP dependant than daggers in standard grinding, and less in PvP.
AFAIK neither of them sucks in end game at the moment, but I'm not so sure about the internal class balances between races.

Nah, remember, when NC was trying to decide on the "hero" system they polled a variety of players (korean). Some of them wanted another way to work on their characters other than subclassing to Hero so they decided to make the 3rd Class change.
This way, those who don't care about the whole noblesse/Hero thing can do one or the other of they wanted to.
I didn't say noblesse - just subclassed. Or the quest started? Something like that.
Yes, I know you didn't. I'm saying that players have two ways to work on their characters, either go the 3rd class route and then enchant their skills and/or go the subclass route which will then lead to noblesse and possibly Hero.
They are just two separate things is all I'm saying. So one could go 3rd class and never do a subclass.
lol.. I just noticed that I have too many posts. But then I noticed you had more. :p
First of all, don't let your decision be influenced by how 'sucky' you hear a character is; no class is really 'sucky' and people will always have different opinions on different classes.
Ask yourself how *you* like playing and what you will get more enjoyment out of.
When you hear a particular class is 'good' at something, it will probably be because of a skill/spell they get at a higher level which is a pain in the *** to get to - especially if the class doesn't appeal to you and you find it utterly boring to level - thus you will lose interest and decide to give up on it, as I have done on countless occasions.
But yes, ask yourself what you'll find fun. I guess the main thing to differentiate between SR and PW is ranged and up-close melee; which do you prefer playing?
It is far better to level a character up and enjoy doing so, rather than boring yourself to tears just to get that supposedly good spell(s).
*Every* class has ups and downs; just make sure you find an appealling character otherwise you will find yourself rerolling too often. (Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. I have been playing since November 24 '04 and have yet to reach A grade because of the alts I have.)
And for PvP aspects; although some classes will always beat others, all classes can be great at PvP if you know how to play them.
When I reached lvl 35 and was about to start my second class transfer I spent lot of thinking regarding which class I'd take myself. Plains Walkers' silent move was verrrry tempting, and the "how-to" when using skills was even more intriguing. To make my mind up, I spent two levels using only a dagger (borrowed from a friend). After that I knew I was an archer at heart. I like dagger classes very much, but I just didn't find it in me to become one. Never regretted becoming a ranger and still I enjoy it and have fun with it.

Both of those classes (PW/SR) are damage dealers. They have their pros and cons as any other class. PvE wise, they can both solo efectievely (specially in places that drop herbs). Also they do get in parties/raid groups fairly easilly. PvP wise, currently all ranged classes have an advantage over melee classes. Can't be sure about the future though. In any case, both classes are far from "suck". Play what better suits your style.
Note: If you like one weapon or the other, keep in mind that both classes usually carry the other classes weapons too. (Daggers carry also a bow for ranged attacks and archers carry a dagger in case the go low on MP)
