If you manage to install windows on it, I wouldn't be surprised if you could run it. I remember people getting a PS2 to run linux, but never heard of anyone running a windows on PS2 or PS3 yet.
It is probably not possible to run l2 on a ps3 because atm only the ps3 OS has access to the video card. All other operating systems can only use frame buffer. Also the ps3 only has 256 megs of ram which is not really ideal for playing games from an OS especially if it is linux in which case you would need an emulator to play windows games.
Gettin an OS as it is to run on a console is more then less impossible. Even linux on a xbox doesnt get installed just buy inserting a CD. You need to compile your own OS on it. Installing a linux client on a PS3 can be done I think, if the team workin on it is big enough and got enough time. And if ya manage then, to get PC games running on it (some could be possible), the performance would be as bad as you can think of.
However, for L2, the client wont load untill the gameguard client is loaded. And GG wont start. Wrong architecture, wrong OS. No GG = no L2 (try to install L2 on a virtual PC, it wont even work there).
Oh just btw, I recently found a NCsoft article on the Mircosoft site:
Windows Server 2003 64bit, thats where our gameservers run on. Funny, since they had so much trouble with the client and 64bit OS. Im also wondering why NC doesnt use linux serrvers...
Yeah, FF XI is out on a few consoles, PS2 and xbox. Most console players quit shortly after they realized that all mobs that give you 200 exp are almost as hard to kill as a RB in L2.

For all server crashes blame MS, not NC :p
WOW...thanks for the information...no wonder why the server gets few lagg spikes from time to time and complete crash every once in a while.
The short answer is no. You would need to load Windows onto the PS3, as GameGoof no longer allows Linux to run L2(well, not legally anyway). If you managed to do that, chances are that GameGuard wouldnt let it run for some reason or another.

LOL... no wonder they have to do weekly server reboots. They also run SQL server, which is crap IMO. Oracle + Linux would have been my choice. Then again, Oracle is a bit more expensive. You get what you pay for though.
