Leading a Clan

Devianne Started Last reply 24 posts
Hi, this is my first time posting on the message boards ^^. Anyways, I am seriously considering creating a clan. I think I can wing it ok but i would like as many tips and ideas as possible. I'm thinking start it out as a newbie support clan, but working its way up as its members level into a max level clan that both aids new players, and provides equipment support and group forming assistance for the higher level ones. I don't know how good I'll do but I am going to try to stay out of pointless clan wars. Please give me some tips and ideas and tell me what other failed clans have done to cause their demise so that I wont make the same mistakes that they did. No matter what I'm going to start this clan and help as many people as I can. Please any clan leaders out there, tell me some of your experiences in leading a clan so that I can do as great as I possibly can for everyone in my clan.
(In the Devianne server pm xxxhaseoxxx if you don't feel like posting, I should be on most of the time most days.)

tyvm ^^

Carefully choose your members and have rules, no hardcore ones, but rules. Be friends with your members, even real life friends. I think that only true real life friendship can keep a clan connected. A clan will not fail if its core is united. Pick your officers wisely, make your members love your clan, protect them, advise them, group with them. No, do not give out equipment to low characters, just help them earn them, they will appreciate it more.
I am not a clan leader, but I am a member of a clan that has very strong real life connections and another clan that has strong ingame and inforum friendships, these bonds are not breakable, and the only thing that may keep a clan going...
On top of Andomiel's advice: never give up. Today's oldest surviving clans are there because the leader with a few hardcore members decided they would never give it up even amongst others leaving because of this or that.

Listen to your members and take care of their needs. Make constant parties to get to know your clan and build loyalty towards you. It might also do to make some alts that you can party lower level members with, which are the hardest to keep in a clan if the clan's level is much higher.

Appoint people to tasks as you find trustable people. You'll never be able to run a clan completely on your own. You'll definitely need trusting officers, which don't even need to bear that name "officer". But appoint them to a close position at your side in the expectation that they will do some important task for the clan.

don't give in to your core values. They're what makes your clan unique and even if every other clan thinks differently about what a clan should be, and even if all the new players really want that clan, don't change yours. There will be players looking for your type of clan, whatever it may be. You have to find them.
i havent ran a clan on this game but i have on several other mmos and im in a great clan in this aswell.

like theyve said be friends with your members i get on really well with al lthe guys in our clan now and we have a good laugh on vent and some fun banter and if i need them to party with or during pvp ill know theyll help me out regardless of xpdebt and so on.

another thing is dont go to far but schedule events regular like mayb an xp group a week and raids and so on:)
Yup only way a clan gets united is to do things together.Xp groups/raid grps/pvp grps..But even whit officers be prepared to spend allot of time, taking care of the clan.People both from inside and outside the clan will turn to you, when [censored] hits the fan.
Also first thing you should do,is to find out what kind of a clan you wanna lead.A pvp clan/rp clan/non politic clan..And what are you prepared to accept in clan..Ebay/account buying/powerlvling/what ever..Make the rules and stick to them. Will save you from getting the wrong members in the long run.And to build a good core that will keep the clan alive.
At first i would try recruiting members that plays around the same time line as you do,nothing worse for a member than an empty clan rooster.Later you can add people that plays different hours than you.
There is a whole lot more to being a clan leader, than the rights to clan warehouse..
Nerukan is right about most. Oddly enough I am one of the oldest remaining orginal clan leaders on the server now. I think only Craylon has been leading a clan longer then me (Nerukan's clan)

1. If you do not have a lot of free time join a clan instead of making one and be an officer.
2. Your toon your gear and your leveling always come 2nd to the needs of the clan. Lots of people bust my chops on the boards about always selling in town etc, but anyone in my clan knows im playing alts buffing them or running around getting mats for them or helping them do class change quests farming rep points by leveling alts etc.

3. Never quit like Nerukan said, I am on my 3rd offical rebuild of WO. Its a little over 2 years old and I am the only current member that is still in it from when I first made the clan. My core values in the clan never changed I made some mistakes by appointing officers who didnt think the same way I did though.

4. YOU HAVE TO HAVE FUN. If you get more joy out of helping others and see people succeed because of you then your good clan leader material but if your more worried about your own fun and your own needs leave the leading to someone else. Being selfish is a bad trait for a clan leader.
Wow I didn't think I would get half as much helpfull advice as that. Thank you all ^^. I haven't created it quite yet but I did make this, I will mail it to all members as they join, or maybe ill setup a thread for information on the clan and just post it there. Any adjustments you guys think I should make or things I should add? And more advice is always good too. Thank you very very much.

Welcome, to “The World” of Lineage 2.

The Twilight Brigade is a support-based clan, currently focusing on new players, although any player may join. We will help with equipment by either finding the recipes and materials, or by chance if it is dropped during a Raid. We would prefer to get you to stand on your own with support from your friends and clan-mates, not baby you with nothing but top of the line equipment for free.

Clan Rules.
(1) Pvp is a fun aspect of the game, but Pking is not an acceptable practice.
(2) Be friendly to all other players you meet, Clan Wars at our levels are not fun.
(3) Raiding is another great aspect of Lineage 2, have fun and try not to get killed.
(4) If you get materials for crafting, put them in the warehouse, we can use them.
(5) If anyone in the clan needs assistance and you can help him or her, do so.
(6) When you need help, ask the clan, if we can we will.
(7) Do not disobey a Clan Officer or the Lord of the Clan without due cause.

Punishments
Rule one
If you Pk and are still red, I will Pkk you until your white again.
If you continue to Pk without a just cause, I will dismiss you from the clan.
If you Pk a clan or alliance member, you will be put on a “Blacklist”.
Rule two
Just because its an online game doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want, there are rules of conduct here just like in the real world, and they are exactly the same.
If you accidentally start a clan war, you will be given a warning.
If you purposefully start a clan war, you will be put on the “Blacklist”
Rule three
If you die when fighting a Raid Boss, don’t worry. That’s one part of the game that is totally not like in real life, you can be resurrected.
If you get a drop that you don’t need, either give it to someone in the party that does need it, or save it and give it to a clan member that needs it.
If you purposefully cause your group to fail in a Raid and there are fellow clan members in your group, you will be added to the “Blacklist”
Rule four
We will have dwarves in our clan that can use most materials to create useful weapons and armor so we don’t have to buy them. Either put them in your warehouse or the clan warehouse. Never sell them to NPC stores, if you think you have enough adena to buy what you will need and want to sell them for a little extra, try Giran Castle Town.
Rule five
If you can help someone, do so. If your just questing or grinding and doing just fine but someone needs help, try to help them out.
If you make fun of someone who can not do a quest or raid, you will be given a warning.
If it becomes a problem, you will be kicked from the clan.
If you continually harass another player, you will be added to the “Blacklist”
Rule six
If you need help just ask, there is never any harm in that. If you don’t ask for help when you need it, you’re only hurting yourself.
Rule seven
The Lord and Officers are the managers of the clan, and have the right to give privileges to you, and take away privileges when issuing a warning.
If you disobey a direct command from either the Lord or the Officers without a good reason, you will be given a warning.
If you continually disobey the Lord or the Officers, you will be added to the “Blacklist”
Blacklist
If you are added to the “Blacklist”, you are also dismissed from the clan.

I mighta gone a bit far with detailing punishments, I got kinda carried away ^^. It's all pretty much common sense things anyways isn't it?
Better cut down the punishments from the above and just interview the members that are about to enter your clan. A good and detailed interview may expose a potential scammer and/or show a new friend. Also change the Blacklist to KoS list (Kill on Sight) :)
Ya that sounds good ^^. Any advice on effective interviews? The punishments are kind of like "duh" anyways. Blacklist and KoS list are like the same thing too. I think I will start the clan today or tomorrow, Thank you all for your very very helpful advice ^^. More is always appreciated.

looks like a good setup for a clan :)

i would maybe put in some anti ebay/botting/cheating rules since not all players seem to accept that these are bad things today.

ah and dont make the mistake and perma-spam recruitment shouts like the infamous pin, rather make groups and party the people to see if u like them bevore you recruit them.
also for me it felt helpfull to recruit mostly player from your own timezone so they see your clanleader online when they log.
Careful with too many complicated rules, keep it simple the more complex you make the less people will be willing to join. Got to remember people are playing this game to escape from real life pressures and relax too many rules and it will feel like a job more then a game. My clan rules are simple enough, dont start fights with people for no reason but you are allowed to defend yourselves at all costs even if it means going red, always do your sin eater and keep your pks under 5, never trade anything to anyone that you cannot afford to lose (stops with scams too) and help any member of the clan that needs it as best you can, and last EVERYONE recurits clan does not grow unless the members in it all make an effort to do so.

(7) Do not disobey a Clan Officer or the Lord of the Clan without due cause.

Discipline is always good to have, as is a chain of command, but be circumspect in how you impart directives. How well you wield authority will determine the parameters of "due cause" more often than not.

And I'm not just saying that because of my natural penchant for resisting authority. :D
The most important thing to realize about being a clan leader is:

You cannot, should not, and will not please everyone. Don't expect to. People will get ****** off at you and leave your clan, they may even wait until the middle of the night when no one is online - - - You can't take that personally, or you will quit the game, not just the clan.

Good luck, from Hinde (well, from me anyways) =)
I think I need some more advice before I start fullblown with my clan. Should I have my main be the leader of it? How do I get adena/items to help out my clan members? Do I just become good friends with everyone and hope they all donate all their adena to the clan or something? Do I and a few other members need Dwaven alts to craft everything we need? Theres got to be something I'm missing because even though I am determined to solidify this clan in the server, I suddenly feel like I need a more time before I can properly support it.... oh I just got a part of it ^^. I need to get my trusted friends together and have them help me with it ^^. I have to accept them and all my members as crucial to developing the clan and aiding who we can. I need to set up an in game meeting between us and so we can talk about where the clan is going and how are we going to get it there. It's near impossible to do this alone, I need all the help I can get, and no matter what "we" cannot give up. Wow i didn't realize opening a thread on the message boards could be so insightful and enlighting. Thank you all ^^. I hope I'm not missing anything still ^^.

_-=Haseo=-_
Tha character that you play most should be the leader of the clan so that your members see you online more time. This char is most of the times your main :p. Also it is a good strategy to get some dwarven alts to help you produce some mats and adena. No do not ask from clan members to give their equipment, don't even expect that from them. Just do some low level raids and you get the drops for the clan WH...
I wish you luck, a clan like that will be good for new players to develop in and feed a newer generation of Devianne players
Thanks everyone ^^. I started the TwilightBrigade yesterday. It has 3 members at the moment but there are a few friends of mine that will probably join pretty soon ^^. One of my friends that is already in the clan is helping me out a lot, and when I get more of my friends to join we should be able to really get the clan going ^^. Right now its only level 1 because the leader is the level 29 SR, but I'm having my main get seal stones for AA so I can get High Grade SP Scrolls for him. I really hope the Lords of Dawn win ^^. Oh and here is a revised version of that really really long list of rules ^^. Thank you all ^^.

(Would that fit on the Clan Announcment it gets at level 3?)
I could not write down in 10000 words what leading a clan can mean, so I think I might stick to a short 300. ;)

Many advices here were good: Never giving up, making your clan members your friends, not letting it get to you if some are displeased, planning in a lot of time and being careful about who you let join to avoid disappointments later on.
I think what I want to add to that is that most clans I have seen break apart from drama, and that's directly linked to the mentioned friendship in a clan. Friends are close to each other, that's why they can also hurt each other. Trust and the ability to forgive, as well as patience and a certain stubbornness have served me well as a clan leader. :)
Oh, and never forgot why it's fun to play. If you cannot remember any more, then you took some wrong turn. ;)

Good luck with your clan!

Very nice, informative post all. :)
This is a great idea for a clan. I haven't joined a clan up till now because I've been looking for the right one, this one seems ideal. I expecially like the idea of a group that helps out new players.
There are a few clans like that BadWolf depending on your playing time I would find one that is like that and active in your time zone.
Vendui' Haseo, how has your clan fared so far? :)

EDIT: this question was a bit superfluous, now I saw your other thread. ;)
