Official Poll: Altered Realities

General Discussion Started Last reply 71 posts
Maximilian Hoodwink's pilfered magical oils have been plucked clean from every corner of Aden. The traveling salesman has promised to guard his shipments more carefully in the future.

I realize many of you have already voiced your feelings on this event--consider this poll thread the official place for feedback on the Altered Realities event. Please place your votes below and reply in this thread with specific comments to let us know your thoughts (keep it constructive and appropriate, please!). Thank you!
Gl on the next one :/
I play L2 because i love slaying mobs and because it is a teamplay based game. I love it because you allways have goals to reach.

The last event was designed for the wrong game (imho). Send the code to Blizzard ;)

However, every non-profit Event is welcome, as long as the event-designer shows more imagination.
The setup was the best part of the event. Give the writers a pat on the back. :D

Because I believe in transparency:
1. It was just right: The event was not complex, so I think the duration was appropriate.

2. I participated: I logged on, killed mobs, and maintained a near constant status of "Enlightenment," so I participated. :p

3. It made me more interested in the event: The setup was the best part of the event. It made me interested in the event. However, in hindsight, the story did set the bar a bit high.

4. They weren't fun/desirable: Aside from the Enlightenment potion, the other potions were too heavy and took up a lot of inventory space. Event drops should have zero weight.

5. The drop rate was well balanced: Whether I wanted the potions or not, I think the drop rate itself was fine.

6. No: I voted "No" although the event would not prevent me from logging in. If this event was repeated next week, I would still play--the event would just be an annoyance.

The traveling salesman has promised to guard his shipments more carefully in the future.

If he fails, can you load him as a killable NPC? I think that would make people happy...
I liked everything about the event, except for the rewards.
My biggest disappointment about the event was that it didn't offer anything new or different. All of the effects of the event items had existing in the game prior.

The event would have been much more interesting if it made faces/hairstyles/changes that are not normally available. Even if it just changed colors of armor, added random glows, whatever. Just something new.
I liked the event writeup, but when I realized what the elixirs were, along with the weight of the items, I found the event to be a waste of time and a hindrance to game play. I tried to keep to town and crafted instead.

If Max ever shows up in town, please make him killable, as i am sure most players have him as KOS. We've been hoodwinked by this snake oil salesman. Some would even bend so low to call him a scammer. He dumped his crap wares in the lands of Aden because he could not sell them in any market. Where do I send the bill for cleanup to?

Good job on disappointing.
I fortunately went full circle drinking every pot I found and returned to my original hairdo and face. The only thing that changed for me was my prophet's hair colour - it looks nicer now IMHO.

I guess the event would have been a huge hassle for people too scared to run around with alternate hair for a week. :p
Oddly enough, in the few times I was hunting during the event, I only got a BigHead potion and a hair-change potion that, apparently, dyed my hair the same white colour it already was...
I think this goes down in history as the most disliked event ever, heh.

This pretty much sums up my vote as well I think.
I liked the idea behind the event, but hated the story. I'm very sick of always seeing dwarves being the one behind the event. Considering that fishing is the only way t manufacture potions, it would have made more sense to have the fishing guild members be the ones who lost the potions.

All that aside, this event did suffer from some very major problems. The large wieght of each potion when they dropped frequently made for a large inconvenience. The large number of potions also was a problem considering we have a 64 item limit if we want to work on doing quests.

The easiest fix to this event would be to have the potions weigh nothing and have a randomly generated effect when used, rather than when picked up. This way we wouldn't have to have inventories full of mask potion, mask potion, mask potion, luxury potion, luxury potion, luxury potion, luxury potion, luxury potion, etc. The current implementation was lazy and poorly thought out.
I voted "I participated" as it's hard to avoid when the items drop from mobs you'll kill regardless. But I didn't participate in the sense of using the oils, other than a few big head pots.

The traveling salesman has promised to guard his shipments more carefully in the future.

Tell him thanks :)

I think this goes down in history as the most disliked event ever, heh.

Agree
Drop rate was great, the duration was plenty, the rewards were imo poor, well very poor sorry.
Next time, let's have the same type of event, but have the mobs drop some of the other items that are available through the priests...like SP scrolls, CP pots, GHP, Haste, Acumen, WW, etc., etc. You don't have to assign any NPC trade shop value to these items at all. :p
This event was nicely designed with very nice rewards but it was just 2 years beyond its time. Try to be more modern next time. By the way what's the next event? Usually there's an event coming after a patch comes in. Maybe Maximillian Hoodwink will randomly teleport between towns exchanging oils for some other items, e.g. trade an oil and get a greater haste pot or 10 oils for a brez. That would make a lot of people cry.

Maximilian’s magical oils are all the rage with everyone from the High Priests to the local blacksmith--the effects are praised as being simply amazing!

I wonder, why did items so popular among NPCs have absolutely no value to them (I mean when brought to shops), despite the lore?

Yup that would be my idea, or maybe like 100 for a +1/-1 Dye, 200 for a +2/-2 etc. But make SURE THEY WEIGH 0
I bet that 1 year from now we're going to have the same event, except this time you're going to have to collect more parts to actualy craft style change pots! That would follow the trend of events getting worse every time.

And wheres the "I participated because i had no choice because you made them drop from **** mobs" option?

Still not a compelling enough reason to clog up my WH with the oils. But you're onto something there!
BEST EVENT EVER
The options were way too generic for this type of event. If you want constructive feedback they need to be more suited for the event. These are my more precise answers.

What did you think about the duration of the event?
- Spot on, any longer and we'd have been swimming in potions, any shorter and some people may have missed out.

If you didn't participate in the event, what was your reason?
- I didn't really have a choice in the matter, the items dropped whether I liked it or not.

What did you think of the background story/lore of the event?
- The story, as always, was very fitting.

What did you think about the rewards for this event?
- The rewards are something which can be picked up by 90% of the population anyway by trading AA with the dawn/dusk NPC's. Something more unique would have made this a more interesting event.

What did you think about the event item drop rate during the event?
- Way too high. A rate of around 1/100 would probably have been more ideal.

Would you participate in an event like this again?
- Again, I wasn't given the choice, but if I could ignore the event, then I would probably have done.

Thanks
The duration was OK, the items dropped at a rate I think is OK for event items, the background story was OK. But the rewards - were crap. As somebody already mentioned - making the rewards for an event something which a.) is readily buyable at a low cost and b.) is something most players do not really want/need is a bad idea (you have the character creation screen and there you choose the hairstyle/face options which you like the most, so there is no real reason to change them anymore). That the potions used up a lot of inventory space and also had a very high weight was just added annoyance. Event items should not weigh anything at all, and should also use only few inventory slots (e.g. make the drops something like a box which stacks if you get several of them, and which you then can open when you go back to town, and then the boxes randomly transform into one of the "real" event item - like the blueprints from TOI which come as "papyrus" until you right click them).
Text message from a friend who is currently on vacation and I quote, "If they call this an event then we've been hoodwinked to the max. Sorry Max Hoodwink."
Lineage 2 is a hardcore game (and well the economy is a bit rough) so the majority of players would rather want drops that are useful than cosmetics thing. Personally I did not mind it, I used all my potions :D
Had the Event "oils" offered a chance to truly make your character unique I would feel completely different regarding this event.
A special assortment of Event only face styles, hair styles and colorings, perhaps even an array of facial hair for the male toons and make-up designs for the female toons, would have gone along way toward making this event a success.
As it is I still have a few of the original Dye's that were given to everyone active for the Chronicles 2 Update. Getting an event item for free when I already have said item (again for free) simply holds no value to me and obviously a great many other people.
The event was too long, since it sucked so hard. I tried NOT to participate in the sucky event but since you made all mobs drop those blasted oils, I had no choice. The background of the event was nice, ACTUAL event newer even came close to it.

The event rewards were not rewards, they were a punishment. Even wooden arrows make better rewards, atleast you can sell those. Items dropped way too often, 0 would have been better. And the whole stacking system was awful, why couldnt they just make it so that all pots are the same with a random type that is rolled when used. Oh, and what about the weight, gg there.

And finally, next time you make this event, I'll sit in town and craft. For the duration of the whole event. Atleast that way I can AVOID the worst event in the history of MORPGS!.
It could have been a great event, but I don't think events are worth it if the rewards are easily obtained through something already existing in game such as existing hair styles available from the 7-signs priests and priestesses.
Pro: Good Story, lenght of the event just right, good drop rate at this sort of event
Cons: Very bad event drops, weight was to much, not stackable over 3 or was it 4.. hmm

Tip: atleast make so that Maximilian Hoodwink's is standing in town explaining a thing or two, to bring more lore in to the event and fell.
Good trie, but worst event yet.

No, no, no! Make him stand outside of a town so I can explain to him a thing or two. With my axe.

haha thanks made me laugh. :D
I've never seen so many people get their panties in a bunch over their character's hair/face. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside to see all these closet fashion whores out in the open and wallowing in it. ;)

ROFL Maline, nice ^^
What did you think about the duration of the event?
The duration of the event was way, way too long.

If you didn't participate in the event, what was your reason?
Now this is a stupid, genetic question that's been used for every event thus far. The Golem Event was the one where you could either 'participate' by running all around looking for the golems or not 'participate' by doing whatever you normaly do. Might need to update the genetic Vote Template for this one. I did NOT participate in the Golem Event because I chose not to, but I had no choice with this one.

What did you think of the background story/lore of the event?
What story? Lore? Trying not to insult anyone, I'll leave it at that.

What did you think about the rewards for this event?
Rewards were descent but far too numerous. How many times can one change face/color in a day anyway? Gets old real quick.

What did you think about the event item drop rate during the event?
Same as above, would be nice if it only ran for 1 day, or if the oils dropped at a rate of maybe 1/300 or something.

Would you participate in an event like this again?
You mean much like this time around? Once again, generic verbage is not always a good thing.
I hated the fact that the pots were SO heavy.

I fortunately went full circle drinking every pot I found and returned to my original hairdo and face. The only thing that changed for me was my prophet's hair colour - it looks nicer now IMHO.

I would have had nothing against the event if they'd added a new haircut or face or whatever into the game. But I've had already cycled through all this stuff when I created my chars and picked the least ugly setups. Non-event for me.
I had a few laughs with the fat head potions and my scav looks better now. I also have to admit I have a few stored too.
As light hearted fun, the event was fine.
Taking part in it was almost compulsory as the items simply dropped.
There should have been an NPC to collect the potions and this would back up the original idea of recovering the items.
Potions could then be handed back for a small amount of adena (50a) or a "pot luck" alternative potion rewards like haste, alacrity, casting and perhaps even the p.att/m.att potions.
Shops should also buy the drop items at the same nominal 50a. This means noobs can make some pin money and the items won't get left lying around.
A market would also be created in selling to players for the better potions.
What did you think about the rewards for this event?

Where was the It sucked option? :P
This event was basically the last straw for me. cancelled my three accounts shortly after it went live and I lost all faith in NCsoft. Been around since beta too... >_>

LoL Nice one NCsoft. Way to lose another paying customer.
Bad support, and Bad Events = loss of player base.

I didn't even realize the weight of the items. but yeah weight: 50. Good God. put 30 of them in your invatory and you can't even carry SS, or CP pots.

For this specific event was too long, and the only reword thats worth keeping was the "enlightenment" oils that made you head big.

Most events are too short, or the drop rate is too low on long running events, making it near impossible to get a good reword with out playing 24/7, and most players can't play longer then 12-18 hours max before they get too tired and head to bed.

Seriously we know that L2 is a hard game, Events should be made fun so players can enjoy the game and make some cash. or worth wild items that they can use.

To sum up the best events: metals, pumpken, L2 day, RB events with big drops. Mass spawn mobs that drop: shots, L2day scrolls, and Mats.

Event idea's that players have had: boss jewelry, Massive amonts of Mats, Shots, consumables, EW/EA scrolls, double XP/SP, life crys(high grade, top grade), Recipe's that are hard to find (dama for exp), Key mats, etc...
Length: okay, but it could be shorter -- this one in particular. Lore: I bet you can better. It felt like being written in a haste (Just give them something, anything.) Rewards: Really, Alyra, you shouldn't ask that; you see, I'm trying to keep it appropriate... :p On a more serious note, those potions were not the ones we need. Maybe if we were to get scrolls or recipes or anything to make a good use of it, I'm sure we wouldn't complain for the weight of the potions either.

Drop rate: normal to high, which makes me wonder: can't we have high drops and decent rewards?

Better luck with the next one.

Let me tell something to ju...

LOL :)

Agreed. Normally I like these events, but when I saw an event that said it would offer random permanent changes, I figured it would be cool to try it out. Few people would chance a random permanent change on their main, so this seemed like an opportunity to have a unqiue look to my character.

However, I quickly found that all it did was change my character to all the options that I chose NOT to pick at character creation.

The enlightenment oils are cool, though. :)

Like the quoted poster said, I would have enjoyed the event if it offered something new.
To all the people whining about the weight: Would it really have killed you just to DRINK them and keep one of each of the ones that you KNEW would return you to your original looks?

Yes, new looks would have been cool (I want black hair for light elves ****it :p ), and it might not have been FUN for some people, but complaining about the weight is ACTUALLY complaining about your hair and face changing - oh whoop de doo, you had the wrong hairdo for a few hours! I'm sure THAT hampered your gameplay experience.
The pots didn't bother me until someone throw one out of his inventory in party. I had to remind him that it would take someone else's loot turn. Then I realized this event was just messing up the loot turns, so I officially started to dislike it.
Having to pay to get my character's look back wasn't exactly what I expect from an event. Losing money is hardly an event for me. So I tossed Enlightment Potions by drinking them (I didn't care the effect, which doesn't make a SD manga character but just a big head that doesn't fit on the body). And I tossed the other potions on the ground at WH.

Now it would have been another event, it was **** too short.
Losing money is what happens every event to me, so I'm honestly used to it - plus, as pointed out, it was easy to identify which potions you needed to return to your own looks and save one of those each.

To all the people whining about the weight: Would it really have killed you just to DRINK them and keep one of each of the ones that you KNEW would return you to your original looks?

I often wonder why people always ridicule the whiners, but no mention is ever made of the people who whine about the whiners. :D :D :D :D :D :D

Can we finally agree to move on and let the healing begin? LOL
I would like to see something new, I'll admit. ):
Thank you for the effort put into giving us this event.

If you want to improve this type of event, make the potions give a stat boost for a limited time. If the event gave +1 STR (or any +1) for one hour, folks would praise this event big time. However, such pots should be rare, but not too rare. Just my humble suggestion.
Good idea but you need better rewards...not just renamed priest of dawn pots.

needs to be 1 luxury pot, 1 chameleon, and 1 masking...and they need to be truly UNPREDICTABLE (as opposed to 3-7 of each type that have predictable results once you gain multiples)

should be some unique ones too
-permanent sex change
-temporarily make you look like female dwarf (or permanently like ANY random race)
-SUPER big head...like 5 times what the enlightenment oils did

would be nice if some of the oils were also buff or heal/mp pots...
have some be like Greater haste, greater swift attack, greater magic haste, greater heal, quick heal, greater mana pot[this being unique to event] 8)

If the event was something like that I would spend my entire weekend soloing ;) kind of like how much time i spent looking for mobs that dropped rice cakes in previous events or buff scrolls

the only reason i could see this event in its current incarnation as being worth it is if you release multiple new faces/hairs in a coming update and want to use it to promote people trying out all the styles...unless that happens i would never want to see this event again...it was such a let down and I know many of us would have rather had no event than this one (it produced a ton of extra loot which takes a lot of space and weighs a ton)

edits: btw, I LOVE events that don't cause us to waste hours upon hours running around for the hopes of finding something before 1 other person beats us to it...events like these, pumpkin, medal, l2day are my favorite style of event because although the rewards are not as great, it is more fair for everyone to have a chance to get something...not just the few people with fast computers who sit in town at the peak hours...I miss out on a lot of events because I work weekends and evenings...I like being able to come home at 2am and still participate 8)

and Hi, new community manager 8)

Losing money is what happens every event to me, so I'm honestly used to it - plus, as pointed out, it was easy to identify which potions you needed to return to your own looks and save one of those each.

A friend tried them and we were giving all our potions (of the good type) and he kept getting another hair cut. How many potions do you need to get it back?
It took loot turns for nothing. Potions could have been given to a NPC to be exchanged for a little prize.

Anyway, it's over and a majority of players expressed their appreciation. We can hope for something better next time :)
alot of the poll questions were hard to answer. because usually i like events to last long, and drop lots of items... but this particular event i had to say no. if the next event is something more people would like, try not to gimp the drops/duration XD. some of the events had decent prizes and such but the drop rates were horrible. gotta find that balance. this wasnt my favorite event, but i appreciate the effort. also, just a quick tip. i feel the l2 community likes any event that can get them money. ill admit it, i even judge events based on how much adena i made. thus, my favorite one was a while back when i made ~50 mil on brezes and such on a Halloween event. granted some people got ant rings and such off that one event... anyways.. more of that please =).
How such a minor event could make someone leave the game is beyond me. Had there been no event, would you have left then ?
Something long term players don't realize is that there are lower level newer players out there that find these events enjoyable, unpredictable and encouraging.
What benefit a face change potion is to a 75 is debateable but too many people go on about nothing happening and nothing to entice new players then, when NCSoft try something, you throw it back in their faces. Ok, it might not have been an amazing event that inspired beta players but it was an event. It seems NCSoft have got more flak for staging an event than just having another week go by with nothing happening.

Jeez.
If you waited until a fair amount of them was in your inventory, you would have seen that they go in different stacks - the same stack always produces the same result. ^_^
Hmm looking at the poll makes me think that most of the people in this game are obviously greedy and not happy unless an event makes them millions upon millions.

Frankly they're lucky to get events like that once every month or so in my opinion. They should learn to be greatful that Lineage isn't like some other games where you see an event like that maybe once a year.

Anyway, there's also the possibility that the majority of people just don't visit the forums, so the people who actually liked the event don't have a chance to participate in this poll.
Or maybe it just wasn't a good event. Inventory spamming, uselessness of items and the involuntary nature of the event makes it a very bad one.

Or maybe it just wasn't a good event. Inventory spamming, uselessness of items and the involuntary nature of the event makes it a very bad one.

Amen to that.
I give the event...
"A" for Effort in creating the Event

But "F" because...

The event was ridiculously boring, waste of time and of no benifit, the potions were way too heavy non stackable and unsuable unless your absolutely bored and want to change your appearance every 10 mins. The Big Head is funny once, twice maybe even 3 times... but after that its boring and nothing NEW.

Anyway BRING BACK the Holloween Events where you had lots of Raid Bosses pop up everywhere. That event was server wide and most fun Everrrrrrrr!!!! :D

Hmm looking at the poll makes me think that most of the people in this game are obviously greedy and not happy unless an event makes them millions upon millions.

Greedy? In a game where for most players it practically *costs* you adena to level at the same time equipment costs skyrocket on a per level basis, I don't think it's so much greed as a long term sense of frustration building up to an inevitable release of anger.

In short, events are seen as a much needed 'release valve' for the 'grind'. So when event after event is either gimped for rewards or people are unable to participate fully (due to drop rates based on time zones or not finding event mobs despite looking) or just plain long stretches of time between events, people will get understandably testy and irritable at 'yet another crappy event'.

At this point we could have an 'event' where all that happened was NC automatically dumped 5M into everyones warehouse and not only would people be ecstatic, but for the most part the economy would barely blink. When people are relatively happy (strings of 'good events' or personal luck like drops) then you can afford to have a 'frivolous' event such as this last one and some people will grumble a bit, but most people will take it with good nature....but throw this event after a long 'drought' and some 'not-participation-friendly' events and something like this will have people turn around and (understandbly) rip you a new one.

In short, NC needs to have a bunch of "throw money, items and materials at everyone" events to make up for the games lackluster drops/spoils and the long string of non-rewarding events.

...And honestly I think the weight of the pots in the last event was a GOOD thing. It helps prevent bots from exploiting event drop rates, and adds a risk/reward factor to not carrying 20 billion heal/cp/buff pots if you want to get the most out of the event. (I think you were carrying waaay to much crap if the event potions could weigh you down faster than your consumable use reduced it...going to town once every 3 hours shouldn't kill you.)

Although I do agree the sheer number of the various potion types did take up too much room in inventory after awhile.
It's not all about money.
How would you react to an event where the prize was waking scrolls? You wouldn't be impressed, right?
As far as I'm concerned, the prizes might as well have been waking scrolls. I don't necessarily want to make money, but I do expect that there's some desirable reward you can get from the event.
My object is never money, unless there's nothing that I want/need, that you can get from the event.
Like the first event in C5, all I was thinking of, was to farm enough medals to get my bishop a pink party mask on Franz. Though I'd probably have been better off, if I had just sold my medals.
money ftw !

pls give us name change pots next time ! ty !

Some people certainly are greedy. But to say that everyone who didn't like the event fits into that category is a gross genralization. Most people are just looking for a good time.

And we are not "lucky" to have events. NC doesnt "have" to do them. But they are not some charitable, selfless, free handout.

My phone company for example may offer free long distance for a few days every month (randomly). And I would certainly appreciate it. But is not out of the kindness of their hearts. Its to attract more customers and make them more money. They could go a month without offering it, and even though they may have conditioned me to expect it, I would understand that it was never "guaranteed to me". But if they advertise that they are going to have a free call weekend, and then once it comes it turns out the call quality is aweful and there are restictions on where and when I can call. I'm not gonna be happy. Im gonna ask why they bothered to even offer it (since they didnt have to) if they were just gonna half-a** it.

Events are mutually beneficial. It can only help NC as a company to have events that are as enjoyable as possible. Because a happy, entertained player base is a good thing.

Sure there are those that are happy to get anything at all, or that think NC can do no wrong. But NC needs to keep all the buisness it can, not just the fanboys. And you don't attract customers, or keep the customers you have by offering mediocre service and incentives, in whatever form they may take.

And I would much rather have a great event once a month or less, than have non-events a few times a month.
There is always going to be a section of the population that wants profitable events.

Personally I want ENTERTAINING events. It doesn't make me greedy, jaded or unappreciative if I opine that the fun factor of Altered Realities was virtually nil. Even for new players, once you had a chance to sample all of the pots....and it wasn't that difficult to get all of the pots, given the high drop rate...the fun phase of the event was over, and the nuisance phase of the event began.

Yes, we should be thankful there was an event. But we should also be honest and vocal about our opinions of the event.
Most controversial poll ever.

1. What did you think about the duration of the event?
As the event was really annoying, it was way too long. But that doesn`t mean that better event should not be longer.

2. If you didn't participate in the event, what was your reason?
If I say I participated, in overall results it would seem that I actually participated on my own will, and that is WRONG. Yes, I participated, but the only reason for that is that I cannot refuse to participate unless I stop exping. I wasn't interested/didn't like the event is closer to the point, but still.

3. What did you think of the background story/lore of the event?
Oh, there was a story? I thought that was a standard event template.

4. What did you think about the event item drop rate during the event?
Again as in (1), if the rewards were better, i`d vote for a higher drop rate. But as it were I prayed for items not to drop in hope that they won`t clog my inventory and add weight.

5. Would you participate in an event like this again?
And do i have a CHOICE?

Something long term players don't realize is that there are lower level newer players out there that find these events enjoyable, unpredictable and encouraging.

You are totally wrong here, i`m playing no more than a couple of weeks now, and i was actually afraid to accidentaly use any of those pots while deleting them, because i happen to know what I do, and I chose what I like when creating my toon, and I have absolutely no spare money to waste at a priest to get my looks back.
I had fun with the event and enjoyed the reward. Most of my toons ended up with basically the same look, but each used several potions. Overall, two thumbs up on this non-revenue producing event.

P.S. I am glad all events are not the same, would be boring if they all just dump items or Adena into the economy.

Thanks!

Taking the old Change Hairstyle/Color/Face potions & removing their names, adding some Bighead potions, making a random drop on every mob, and that's it.
The guy thinking about the background story had much more work than both the event designer & the person implementing it.
I don't get the point in making an event like that... just useless in my opinion.
