Welcome to the game. Do you like to fight up close and personal or do you like to keep your distance? It's all a matter of your preferred fighting style. Both are great to play.
I don't much a whole lot about either, but I can tell you a little. Archers seem to rule in PvP in L2, but I keep reading that they are an expensive class. People seem to talk about crit damage a lot when the subject of Dagger classes comes up. But I once played with a TH in a small group in ToI. He had a lot of special skills that helped finesse a very dangerous situation in a dungeon full of aggro mobs, and his skills were also nice for finding and pulling the mobs we were farming for drops.
I must be going up against some bad archers then. As a DA, I don't seem to have much trouble with them. My Panther likes licking the bones after I kill them.

Just another point to add in here: I have TH sub, and I really enjoy it and all the stealth skills -- silent move, stealth (which means I can go anywhere practically, with very few exceptions) -- fake death, trick, veil, lure, backstab, and deadly blow. Dash is great too... Lots of choice. There are no self-buffs tho. But TH can also use a bow. Even with just the level 40 skill set of bow masteries, I can crit like crazy with dances and songs. Of course, that's not the same as the HE, where archery is the specialty....
I have an HE and here is what i think
from lvl 1-40 dont use bow ( unless ur really rich :)), it will cost you around 300k - 500k soulshots haha.
HE runs/attacks slower than other archer like SR, PR but it has higher HP/dmg. If you like Hit and Run style i would suggest you to consider PR(phantom rager) as well.
P.S Archer class is really really really hard to level up. Archer without bufss = worthless POS
Archer are probably better than daggers early on, but rely a little bit more on buffs than a dagger does. However, I would say after the 3rd class change, daggers become much better in small PvP situations, but in a large siege, of course, archers will be doing all the work. In terms of PvE, archer is probably better than a dagger in every way, but archer is probably more boring to most people :(
