Well, I used to play this game from prelude all the way to when they released the c5 PTS, or there about. I quit the game because I was just sick of the grind and never really participated in clans/sieges/raids or any of the politics that follow. I have never had a character past level 55. I've never botted or ebayed. I was a pretty casual game but I really enjoyed the game. With all this talk of people quitting because the game is a dead game and is getting boring for everyone, and some people saying they are going to come back because they miss the game and because of the new race that is coming out.
My question is, do you think it is worth it to start playing the game again? I will never ebay and I will never bot. I know there are a lot of people that don't do these things already and I applaud them, but i'll never be a hardcore gamer. At most i'll play 2-3 hours a day, and most likley i'll play around 10-11 hours a week max. A part of me wants to start up again beacuse I miss playing the game, but another part of me doesn't because I know i'll never reach level 80 let alone become a noble or a hero and with A LOT of people already up there in the 80/78/78 range with full top gear, how could I ever compete with that?
Are there any websites or databases that have information on how many people play on each server? I don't care if I play the most populated server or the least, I know I could still have fun either way. If I were to start again I would probably make either a Warlock (They seem fun and a lot of people say they are in high demand, but i've heard they are all over the place now), Phantom Summoner (I'm a big fan of summoners but if everyone is a warlock, I wouldn't want to be something that i'll see all over), Spell Howler (One of the only nukers that seem to interest me), Tyrant (seems fun), or Warcryer (seems fun), Paladin or Dark Avenger (Tanking could be fun). I'm leaning towards one of the 2 summoners because they seem like they could be the most fun for a player like me. I won't have any outside buffs and i'll be starting at level 1 with 0 adena if I were to start again.
I know that kind of got off topic there but i'm just trying to figure out if it will be worth it to start playing, with all the changes since I last played. Oh and not sure if it matters but my old character was a level 55 plains walker. I liked the dagger class but I wouldn't want to play one again
I'm honestly not to concerned about what class to play all in all. The real thing that i'm worried about is if it is really worth it for a player like me to play this game. 10-12 hours a week, max. How far can I really get? I guess that might not be one of the main points I should focus on because i'll probably have fun no matter what.
I was thinking spellhowler or Warlock though all the classes on that list seem really fun.
Worth it, not worth it - that's always a tricky question. For the most part, I'd say that depends entirely on you. If you want to play legit and casually - what is it that keeps you interested in the game?
If it's company: 'Yes' if you can find a clan that goes at 'your pace'. Of course the name 'Mypace' for that clan from the original set of comic strips was pretty ridiculous. However, if you want company, it's important to have a clan that suits you. I am fairly convinced that somewhere in NA there is a clan to fit anyone who is no splatter, so if the company is what you want... yes there are still casuals, and they are still enjoying the game.
If you want money-making - the ebaying is frustrating since it always puts you far behind, but ebayers are formidable for mixing up the economy and making sure that price margins stay nice and big, providing a great amount of exciting money-making opportunities - and if you're good at it, you wind up being able to spend like an ebayer without a single glance at your pocket-book.
But all that aside - you ask an important question.
"How could I ever compete with that?"
No, you can't. That's a thought you have to get friendly with - you will never beat someone on their third class at level 55 unless they are AFK or really horrible, no matter how much some people would like to speak about the importance of D Graders.
The question you should be asking yourself however - considering what makes the game fun for you, do you have to compete with those people?
Thank you for the quick replys and I really like how you worded your response MalineII. I guess I really don't have to complete with those people persay, but then the game basically becomes just a PvE grind fest. I know it's part of the game and i'm going to be doing it no matter what. But one of the things that I liked about Lineage 2 was the PvP and if i'm never really going to be able to compete with people it will get frustrating, but then again i'm a pretty laid back guy and I try and keep to myself as much as I can. I just am having a hard time answering the questions I have for myself. Like, is it worth it, can I compete with these people, will I have fun as a casual gamer in a hardcore game, especially with all the ebaying and botting that goes on. I have been going back and forth on this for days now. I just can't seem to convince myself of starting up again, but I also can't discourage myself enough to stop thinking about it.
Since the game has been out for 3 years now, there are players of all walks of life, of all playstyles that are all kinds of levels.
There's the level 80/78/78 who only do gank runs, already have their epics and don't care about helping others get some either.
Then there's the casual noblesses who don't play a whole lot, but because they've been playing for 3 years they eventually became noblesse.
There's the disillusional level 40-50 hardcore players who only care about pking and pvping and get ubber mad when they kill a level 30 and it turns out to be an alt of a level 75 "carebear" who decides to go get revenge.
There's also the level 40-60 casual players who party once in a while and don't really care about pvp nor levelling.
If you enjoy the pve aspect of the game, there's no shame in there and there are plenty of people like you who do. With raid bosses at pretty much every level now, you can even start doing RBs at level 20.
If money is a serious problem for you, I suggest you either find ways to make money while you're not there (plenty of ways to make stupidly high profits off of ebayers who don't know how to get any item except from giran player shops), or consider making a bounty hunter. Some items have pretty nice spoil rates and even in the level 30 range you can make many millions in a few hours of work.
For exp, I suggest you go with a class that you find fun to play and has some use in parties, but that you're willing to solo with. I have a casual friend who got a bishop to level 75 mostly in solo, but not everyone can play such a class solo, so it all depends on what you like doing.
Fiore, maybe you could get into roleplaying? I'm a pretty casual player myself and I know I'd get bored to tears with this game if I didn't know there's always a chance to have fun with the story of the world--I mean, it's there, why not work with it? On the server Lionna there are a lot of RPers too. If you find a good group you won't be bored. I'm not a veteran to this game or anything but I found a lot of RP in Lionna really quickly, right away. It was neat.
Other than that I don't have much else advice. ^^;
If you are starting from scratch ,and playing casually, a summoner is possibly the best choice for you.
Its the only class that can solo hunt and is also "gear neutral" in relation to competitiveness. eg: A lvl 61 summoner in D grade , has the exact same power pet as the lvl 61 summoner in +6 A grade armor with +15 A grade weapon. The Summons powers are still equal by spell lvl........
Thus your ability to solo/party will not be effected much by any lack of expensive gear.
Aside from that, they are pretty welcome in groups but can also solo.
The downside is the steady crystal cost of using them...
As I still think that L2 is the best game out there concerning freedom to do what you whant, I say yes.
Agree with this.
Fiore - I was in a similar situation and share your ethics. I was gone for two years, returned this week, and having a lot of fun.
Fortunately, I have multiple PC's, so I can dual, or Tri-Box if I want, guaranteeing me my own small party if nothing else is going on, or if I just want to solo.
You raise legitimate concerns, but for me personally, the game experience is still a blast and not much effected by the levels attained by those around me.
At some point I will find a Clan and participate in wars & sieges. Even if I'm one of the weakest on the field, it won't rob me of the fun of the experience, but that's a personal call.
Good luck, and if you are on Sieghardt, give me a yell.
I just started fresh this May, and I have to say, for sure it is worth it. Getting into the 40s is really quick now compared to prior chronicles. And as for being able to PvP, it isn't like you are totally useless in B-Grade. Seiges are large scale operations, and every little bit can help. Oh, and the fireworks event is spectacular! (jk big time, it sucks but whatever)
To tell the truth I love this game.. I really do, it's so easy to fall in love with this game when your just starting out, the scenory.. the epic saga, and storylines behind each player and npc out there. The run of the mill pvp'er or pk'er.
Is this game worth the long hours or days of endless grinding? for me that answer is yes.. I really enjoy and think it's so worth it...
To me I feel that I don't care if I level up.. I mean sure I know all the good spots to grind for no more than 5 hours and get up to 50% of each level before I go on to the next 3 levels which I go to the next good grind spot..
But I really don't care about it, I just love the knowledge that once I get to those levels I can explore more areas of the map of Aden and Elmore, when you play in this world of Lineage 2 in the end.. it's not really about rather you should compete with others to get the best gear or weapon..
I mean when I started out I grinded and worked my [censored] off to get to where I am, I had people and friends help me get the stuff that I possess.. I mean come on for like a 3rd of my time in Cgrade I was wearing chain mail. That's like the lowest of the Cgrade barrel but when I was able to grind the money and alot of help from fellow clan mates I was able to get the FPA and the augmented +5 SLS that I have now, and seeing I finally got to lvl 50 on Alican on Sieghardt. Not once have I not stop and think about all the quests and none stop fighting and grinding in the catacombs and necros inorder for me to get to this spot.
I mean I even had a hard time finishing my DA quest that I had no knowledge of and certainly no book that L2 will print out will have the knowledge of passing your 2nd class quest until now..
Now, I sit down in a field some where and just let my character slowly regenerate herself while I just enjoy the surrounding areas of the land..
As for ebaying for cash.. alot of people do it regardless how much of a hard core gamer they are.. some do it for different aspects though, I don't ebay but I do find ways to gain the gold needed.. not to use to buy the best gear but to give to my clan or clanmates. I don't know but I know I spent over 80million adena on new people and high level characters alike on sieghardt, I spent over 90mill AA on just getting pots and scrolls and whatever could help me along the way of getting to my goal..
Now I really don't care if people pay me back and I really don't care if I see them or not, as long as I got a chance to help them I was happy..
Is this game worth all of that and still ask yourself should I continue playing the game? yeah it's worth every hour, day, week, month, years.. I really do love this game if I didn't I wouldn't have made two PrincessofAden's on Lineage 2 to show how much I really do love it on here..
So if you want to continue go ahead, if not that's up to you.. it's your choice and it's your decision, none of us here can tell you to quit or continue. None of us here can tell you what to do on this game, we can only help and give advice it's up to you rather or not to follow it..
But before you do quit, take the time to sit you character down in one spot and just let yourself take the time to look around your surrounding areas.. sometimes you'll find the answer you seek when you just take the time to sit and think on it.
It all depends on playstyle. For casual players who want to play a game with set levels of advancement I would recommend something like EverQuest (progression in each expansion for the most part) or WoW (more people, more fun). For a hardcore player who is willing to dedicate time to a game and doesn't mind waiting months for the rewards of leveling, I would definitely recommend Lineage 2.
My roomate is of the former category, and I kinda regret getting him into Lineage 2. It's extremely hard for him to get things done in his "limited" [compared to mine] playtime. I have gotten him all his gear, and I get 75% of his SPS/Cursed Bones for him. It is sucking me dry. You have to seriously be a quest hog + support class to realistically afford to donate 80+M of adena to other people before A Grade and actually be able to afford you own gear. 80M won't even get you an A Grade armor set unless it's one of the rare/useless ones.
As for ebaying for cash.. alot of people do it regardless how much of a hard core gamer they are.. some do it for different aspects though, I don't ebay but I do find ways to gain the gold needed.. not to use to buy the best gear but to give to my clan or clanmates. 80M is not alot of cash. My roomate is level 58 Necro and spends pretty much eveyrthing he makes (and half of what I make :)) on SPS/Cursed Bones to level. It's about 4+ Million Adena per level for him. Same level Sorc would probably spend about 2.5-3M per level, SPS maybe more (having to 3 shot what the other nukers can 2 shot at those levels). That's not counting ports, mana pots, magic haste potions, healing potions (grocery store) that we also use when levleing. Buff boxes don't kill mobs, and thus don't gain you any adena - so they are extra cost (before someone brings that up :) ).
A DC Set costs more than you've spend helping others during the lifetime of your toon. A Low A Grade weapon costs near that much (~70M for a Spiritual Eye SA: Acumen). A Majestic Jewel Set unsealed is 50-60M.
Put 2 and 2 together and you suddenly see why people do it.
A hardcore gamer "eBayer" type eBays to buy their top gear/weapon/boss jewels. There's no other aspect to eBay for - the game is simple. A Sword of Damascus (RARE top B Grade sword) is currently 100M+ on Bartz, and the Rec is 40-50M (60%) and 70-80M (100%), for example. Are you going to be supplying those for your clan when your melee are getting to S Grade so they can make their duals?
I wanna say "I don't think so".
But eBaying is really very "you see it in effect when you play" and until you are in high B Grade/A Grade you don't really feel the effects of eBaying, because most of those players will fly through those lower levels extremely quickly (nukers with +10-16 Homus one shotting deep red mobs, etc.).
To a new players, the worst part of the game is the monotany. The general boring atmosphere of soloing the same 1-2 shot mobs and killing the same mobs 100-thousands of times to level up. Grouping is very rare, since most lower level toons are rerolls/subclasses and they have their own "clique" they hang with. The game has matured to the point where the barrier to entry is very high for new players: it includes high levels and good gear.
Of course you can solo well on a Summoner in D Grade, but how many clans realistically will take a 6x Summoner in D/C Grade gear. BW Robes/Light I can see, but Theca/Clan Oath is seriously ******ed. Things cost so much that clans don't want to recruit players that "need help" and will turn you down quite quickly. Of course there are always family guilds/"carebear clans" (no offense intended) that will take anything and anyone.
But you cannot "advance" in one of those, for the most part.
The game is what it is....so "yes" it's worth it to play.
Most of the posters here and many, many of the people in the game ONLY define L2 as an end-game PvP platform.
Obviously it IS that so the definition makes sense.
But the game is also social, it's challenging, it's beautiful, it's complicated and can be enjoyed a lot of ways. Not even mentioning clans and Role-Playing and such.
There is a lot to Lineage 2. Sure, give it a try. And, contrary to most of the posts here--you would actually want the LEAST populated server if you're starting over!!! That would be the easiest path upward.
I'm not sure what happened to you haven't seen a post on here from you lately.
I hope you're going to stick with the game.
If you are willing to play on Bartz I can gear you out 1-40. but thats up to you.
My clan could use some summoners. Most every one that comes play a mystic all ways goes nuker, and I'd love to see alot more summoners around.
Thee fun thing about bartz is it has so many carebears you can find pvp at any lvl. I know I get into it alot with people!!
I've had pvp with people from lvl 24-51 (my current lvl).it never fails when you want a spot to lvl at, and someone else wants that same spot PvP happens.
This game is not worth it, no regular updates, feedback, or suggestions implemented by devs, rampant imbalance between character classes, broken Olympiad, etc, etc etc not worth it at all.

Ahem, you know that the classes don't EVER start equal in this game? You noticed that each class has distinctly DIFFERENT Stats right from the start?
Newsflash on the 1,000,000th "waaah--no balance" comment!!!!!!
The classes weren't INTENDED to be balanced. Not the way you mean it, they weren't.
If they were all perfectly balanced then you might as well only have one race--cause otherwise they would ALL BE THE EXACT SAME FREAKING TOON (with different hair and skin) and all the battles would end in a draw!

Think!
How about you think instead of posting some mindless drivel.
Waaaa waaaa lol I don't think you have any idea what I am saying. If you pick a defensive oriented class, then it had better be able to DEFEND against other classes, since it obviously WILL NOT BE KILLING THEM.
I guess you assumed that when I wrote imbalance between character classes I meant every class should be able to kill every other class. Well, that's not what I meant at all.
