Many "new" features that come to L2 get a "stolen from WoW" tag. How about a little change?
This is what Blizzard is developing right now:
The guild bank is a centralized place where a guild can store items outside of personal bank space. Guild Masters will be able to apply access levels to the different ranks of their guild members, effectively allowing them to mark specific portions of the guild bank accessible by specific ranks.
Sounds familiar, doesn't it? :D
I still bet L2 isn't the first game that has this feature though.
Auction system was already on FFXI. Ryzom has a guild hall and inventory system... etc.
There's no point in searching what is stolen from where. WOW, EQ2 and L2 are all the same game with different skins and little tweaks in the xp curves and in the pvp systems. And that's why LOTRO, another EQ skin, is 5 years late.
you may say as much as you want that it was implemented in some other mmorpg before. the truth is not many people know older or unpopular mmorpgs and care only about few top ones. usually the comparison narrows to WoW because of it's popularity :) that's why it's good to mention that WoW is taking some ideas from current games because it "speaks to the crowd".
I think it's mostly people who are playing WoW as their first mmo are the ones throwing out the ripoff claims.
I've seen people call nwn a "wow clone" because "you earn xp and sh*t". When I was playing Ryzom, one guy wrote a huge rant and quit when they did a halloween event because WoW did events as well. He had proof, too!
With millions of games, movies, and fictional worlds and characters in general, you could draw connections between absolutely everything. With how uninventive the mmo genre is lately (in terms of the big mainstream games anyway), you just don't get any cookies for noticing similarities, and I don't think WoW will be able to sue EQ1 because they stole the concept of orcs. Wait.. and elves, too!
Ye, Mythology aside ;) I mean fictive literature, sci-fi, fantasy etc.
I've always had the impression that LOTR is the basis for the modern elves, dwarves and whatnot fantasy. And even if it isnt the only source, it is one of the major ones. Just wondering ^^

According to Tolkien, LotR is a mythology, not really of a fantasy. He believed Brittain was missing any true mythology so decided to invent one.
And stuff like tall elves are very olde tales. Christianity made the elves small because humans were the center of God's attention and they wouldn't accept any beings as greater than humans. But before Christianity came along, elves were taller, stronger, more intellligent, more dextrous than humans. They also were more liked by the Gods. (uhm, I think NCSoft took the christian elves when they made their weakling light elf classes :P)
Rip-offs of themes, mythologies, creatures, stories, gods and what not have been going on since before the invention of writing.
Should the Zoroastre religion sue all the other religions for copying their concept of good vs evil? And any movie/tv show/book/video game/radio broadcast/etc that ever mentioned of the opposing forces of light vs darkness or good vs evil?

D&D makers even said once that this was the major influence for their game world. As most SHOULD know, D&D was the first game of it's type and spawned many other influences in the gaming world. So yes you are correct that we can thank LoTR for most of the fantasy world races and creatures.
how many things WoW has taken from other games to become WoW?
I would claim, that it is far easier to list the things, that WoW did NOT "reengineer" (steal) from other games:
- Crapyy comic graphic
- Easiest leveling ever
- Loudest and most aggressive marketing and PR strategy
Done.
Everything else that WoW got has been here before.
-pvp ? -- -See Daoc Realm vs. realm
-Skill system ? -- See about every other game
-Class system ? -- only 8 classes to pick from, which is far lower than in most other games I know.
-Instance system ? -- How does that belong to a MASSIVE MULTIplayer game anyway ?

Chainmail (TM) and Tunnels & Trolls (TM) pre-date Dungeons & Dragons, iirc.

Just looked them up. Chainmail did come out first but Tunnels & Trolls came out a year AFTER the original Dungeons & Dragons publication.
Never heard of either one of them so I guess they didn't make a big enough impact in the world. However you are correct in that Chainmail was first published in 1971, Dungeons & Dragons in 1974, and Tunnels & Trolls in 1975.
