Starting on Tuesday, July 17th, the Training Room Test Server will have two new game features enabled for testing: Character Transfer and Character Rename. Character Transfer will allow customers to move characters from one server to another. Character Rename will allow customers to rename a selected character. Both of these features are not part of Issue 10: Invasion. Although we are beginning to test them, we anticipate that they will not be enabled on the live service until after the launch of Issue 10.
We estimate that both features, Character Transfer and Character Rename, will carry a transaction fee of $9.99 each per use (there will be no fee for transfers to or renames on the Training Room). Should a Character Transfer have a name conflict on the destination server, a free Character Rename will be made available to resolve the conflict and rename the moving character.
These new features exemplify our commitment to improve the quality of the City of Heroes experience. We feel the price of these features is enough to prevent potential abuse, but also reasonable enough to not be prohibitive for those who want to improve their gaming experience by moving servers or changing a character name.
IMPORTANT! Customers who are interested in taking advantage of the Character Transfer service should know that it is possible in the future that we may make changes to the game that would remove the need to Transfer servers. One example of such a change would be a server-less game configuration where all players can group with anyone, without the restriction of which server they play on. We are not committing to this server-less configuration, and in fact there are no plans to implement a server-less environment this calendar year, but because we are charging a fee for these services, it is important that our players understand that the possibility exists. We want to be very clear in this regard so that those who do decide to make use of a Server Transfer, when it becomes available, understand that they may not need it in the future.
For those interested in assisting with the testing efforts of Character Transfer and Character Rename, keep your eye on the Official City of Heroes Training Room Forum for further details. Thank you for your continued support.
Server transfer is _NOT_ a bad idea. The name change is. Though when you consider it, names really don't mean much when you are a bad person. You just re-roll and have a new name.
This is a bad idea for L2 currently, and its not needed.
disagree as in my opinion it is needed but there have been ton's of topics like this posted before so do a search (on my name for my part) to see the pro & con's..
ps, Insanity unless I'm mistaken you're from Kain as well so how can you say it's not needed ? Ever tried to find pvp aka not ganking ppl who solo these days ?
Because server transfer wont help any server besides Bartz, Teon, Franz.
Half of Kain is going to move, what about the people who want to stay, they're stuck with even fewer people to play with. It will make certain servers even emptier than they are now.
Point of intrest, keep the customer happy, give them a place to play. If you reach critical mass of a server usage, wouldn't it be better to let the real players who have invested money and time over the years to keep what they have earned and still allow them to enjoy the game.
So, if it does make 3 servers better and the other servers die, isn't that actually going to happen anyways in that order?
This just gives the people someplace to go if they want.
Besides, numerous times I have wanted to transfer Pie to Ellie's server for a month or two just to hunt with them. (there are others too, She is just an example)...
Would be fun and give me a chance to see how others play. I would also love to have my toon on a RP server for a month or two, just to see what that is about.
Remember, City of Heroes is only produced by NCSoft. It is designed by Cryptic Studios, which means they are the ones that determine if server transfers and name changes are appropriate.
NCSoft in and of itself are the ones that determine for L2, however. No outside developer, no third party.

I think it would help aplenty, more regular players would gather on the other servers, while we'd get rid of the jerks to Bartz, Teon or Franz. I know many people who have quit L2 and moved on to other games, simply because of the people on the server or because they coudn't play with their friends.
To be honest, if NC Soft does end up implementing a character transfer or server merge, it isn't going to take place before the new Chapter has settled in, so I have (in my opinion) a much better alternative.
Bear with me and assume that the new chapter will bring in plenty of fresh meat; I propose that if new people choose to roll on a 'light' server instead of a heavily populated one, then they are rewarded for doing so. The reward itself could be anything from free gear (for the love of god, NOT shadow), or some starting money to get them on their way.
The rewards can steadily decrease as the servers start to properly fill up. This way the first bunch of people are off to a good start to help them overcome the general lack of players in the earlier parts of the game. Then as more appear, itll be much easier for people to party together and organize raids and such, so the rewards arent quite as necessary.
To avoid abuse (or hinder it), have it only applicable to a persons first character on a fresh account.
Feel free to poke holes in this idea, but I honestly think it might work.
I'd like to rename at least one of my toons. No, I'm not a scammer, and I'm not on anyone's KOS list. The clan that this toon belongs to is my own, so no worries of jeopardizing reputation. I have no enemies to speak of, and I'd gladly have the Preachers of Doom announce my name change to the entire server for two months, if that's what it took.
The name that I wanted was taken at the time. That name is now available. I've created a level 1 toon and applied the name there. If name changes never become a reality, then I guess I'll just have to grin and bear it.
But of course, only in L2 would you have anyone complain about getting double XP. This is a game filled with truly twisted souls. :)
So true :D
It's strange that every time there is a suggestion to make the game a bit more "fun", or easier to apprehend for new people, or even only to give a choice to some people without being an obligation for others (server transfer anyone ?), you see most of the "old" players go "no way, we suffered at the time, now you have to suffer too"
It's like some old ladies never wanting anything to change :D

We sure did! :D Uphill both ways!
Part of what makes this game fun is the achievement. Having everyone be at lvl 80 with full gear is a bit much.
If the game was less class based and more skill based, at least people could revel in creating new builds and then level wouldn't matter so much.

The only people that would object in a double exp event thread would be the people who did not have the time that week to long on or the people that think the event is too short. Grinding is not fun. 2x drop rate would not do anything either, because we all know 2 multiplied by zero is still zero ;p
Not only that, but a double exp weekend wouldn't do anything that wouldn't have happened during two normal weekends anyway. Instead of having to spend two whole weekends just grinding, you can now spend one weekend grinding and one weekend sking and when you come home from your trip on monday and log in, it will be as if you never went on it.
Having everyone be at lvl 80 with full gear is a bit much.
Yeah, but Sov, think back to when this game was most fun...and I bet you'll agree that it was when most of the players were within the same level ranges, give or take 5 levels. Come on, admit it! :D
A double XP weekend wouldn't get everyone to 80 or in the same gear. We've only increased the XP per mob, not doubled the purse per mob. And even at just 70 (my highest level toon), 48 hours of double XP wouldn't vault me to subclass levels. If you filled me with Red Bull and No Doz, I *might* make it to the doorstep of 71.5%...and be no good at all for work come that Monday.
Considering that it would be the only true double XP weekend of it's kind ever, I expect whomever had those weapons wouldn't have them for very long.
And in the fields, and in the valleys and in the deepest, darkest dungeons, blood would flow from all of the wars that would erupt from people fighting for choice hunting grounds.
See, double XP would be good for PVP, too!
And with double XP, group XP rate would actually be worthwhile for a change.
So many benefits...! But alas, it will NEVER happen.

QFT :D

I wouldnt be so pessimistic... Alyra said very specifically that she wanted every NCSoft title to give the same options to all players, so, who knows ?
Yes to Double XP, yes to Sever Transfers, and so much for the change-impaired old ladies :D
