Those in the game are fine, but I crashed to desktop shortly after the castle changed hands. I can sit here and watch my wife participate in the siege, but any who disconnect report that they cannot get back in.
The siege is being periodically frozen for half-second intervals too ... what is the purpose of that?
Yes, the login server is experiencing connectivity issues. I was just notified a few minutes ago. Our network team is working to resolve it a quickly as possible.
Its been like 2 hours now how can it just now be noticed? I mean really..

yeah, you are right! how dare a forum moderator have something other to do then sit around a computer keeping track of server status. For heaven sake, how dare you have a life! I demand all moderators have beepers to notify them of server status. When a server crashes they drop whatever they are doing and instantly let us know.
Oooorrrrr not. Just because the moderator was just made aware of the issue does not mean the techies were not working on the situation a long time ago. Resetting a server or resolving connectivity issues are not fixed by flipping a switch. they take time to resolve and ensure that the server is stable so the issue is an isolated case and not a reoccurring theme. Go watch some TV, lineage will still be here when you get back.
Yep. I'm fairly certain it went something like this.
Login Server: *dies* GF!

On-Duty Tech 1: Guh? Server's dead? WTH mate?
On-Duty Tech 2: S'pose we should fix it?
Tech 1: Yeah.
*start working on login server, trying to figure out why it gave up the ghost*
(90 minutes later)
Tech 2: You know, someone should tell Alyra.
Tech 1: You! Newbie! Call Alyra and tell her!
Intern: Okay! *runs off and dials*
Alyra: Dammit! I just got in the shower! Hello?
Intern: Login server's down.
Alyra: Alright *goes and posts*

You sir are a ****** bag. You have no concept of corporate responsiblity.
When i run an EVENT that only happens every 2 weeks, i have 3 staff at my work on the event. It took over 50 minutes for them to Attempt to freeze it and they didnt have anyone qualified in house to even know how to do it properly.
50% of kain only log on to siege every 2 weeks and about 70% of them were dced and couldnt log back in. It basicly ruined up sieges for the day on Kain for sure with the fact that no clans in the past 50 minutes could go to different castles to take them over (like happens with dion gludio innadril) in the final 20 minutes.

Seems like there's been a lot of hardware trouble lately. Did NCSoft switch to using twine as their wires? Or did they get brand new servers with the blazing fast 8086 chips?
Lousy time for gamers and staff for things to crap out. They have to work, and we have to go find something else to do.

Shes the COMMUNITY MANAGER not just a moderator and yes they should have been on top of this within minutes not 2 hours later. The fact the log in server and Sieghardt have been down this entire time with no response on siege day or a fix in 2 hours in not acceptable.

Beep... this is a recorded message brought to you by NCsoft... Beep
Our clan leader DCed and couldn't get back in, so we lost our castle without even a hope.
All I can say is petition it (via [email protected]) on the grounds of hardware trouble (and reference the login server issues as acknowledged by Alyra).
Not sure what would happen, but at least you can try.

Wow - posting on the weekend - Blackberry or iPhone?
:)
Also - maybe just an idea - do an ingame message and maybe give the sys admins the ability to post something on the start up screen.
Corporate resonsibility...yeah you are right...I was so wrong! Seeing how you didn't actually respond to any of the factual information I put in my post, i am going to assume you are flaming me because i touched a nerve with the first paragraph. Maybe you are the one with impossible expectations. Ever consider that, or are you one of the kids in this generation that cry the moment they do not get their way? The way I see it NCSoft is working to resolve the connectivity issues. Actually they probably aren't. I imagine some techy is sitting in his cubicle sipping a cup of premium roast and gloating over your misfortune. Because rather than fixing the connectivity issues he is neglecting his jobs just to spite you.
It always cracks me up how people who have no idea how this stuff works get so pissy because they can't fix a server issue with the touch of a button. It takes a while to run scenarios on a server, re-advertise, make sure it's failsafes are in order, and bring the server back up. Sure NCSoft could neglect to do all that and hope the server stays up. But neglecting those important steps would be the definition of neglecting corporate responsibility.
Sorry you can't play lineage right now pal, like I said go watch TV. Lineage is still going to be here when you get back.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that they probably are NOT gonna be able/willing to do a darn thing about this particular issue.
I feel for all of you who were doing a seige tonight, but I gotta think that NC will try to figure out what to do if your CL DC'd in the middle of a seige or 1/2 your clan.

You posted no factual information in your original post. The closest you came was to suggest that techies may be working on the issue, not that they were before she posted about it. For all you know they had no clue it was down and only found out from my post, or from the CM herself. I think we all know servers are not fixed by a flip of a switch, but they should have people in place to respond to the needs of the community immediately especially when they setup their main game content to be on weekends.

couldn't agree with you more.
IMO, in comparison, it's precisely like an major jet airplane firing up to take off. The number of things REQUIRED to be checked and ran and tested and turned off before heading down the runway is quite similare to some MAJOR servers. If a problem arises, call it the black box if you will (logs, and a whole lot of them) need to be looked through while the server is likely Shutdown and rechecked to startup again. And if they find the source, they have to do the repair before launching it again.
Nothing drives people more insane then having a server crashes constantly due to the same problem repeatedly, if the server remains down for a given length of time and can come back up and stay up, i'd be much more happier then dealing with the first mentioned debacle.
Now i KNOW there are occasions when the server may go up and down quite a few times before usually stay up or staying down, this is usually a trial and error situation. Now someones probably going to quote this and say "SHINANIGANS".. nay nay, while the computer world SHOULD be a serious of set values that work, in my experience of running some rather simple and slightly more complex servers, i've ran into occasions when a simple set of commands for whatever reason just don't seem to work, or the server for whatever reasons just isn't doing what it's told causing issue. A little tweak here, restart, crash, retweak, change a file, run crash, change this file, and replace this file, tweak startup and run commands, startup, worken wonders. (oventually either leading to a well running setup, or maybe a shaky running setup, or perhaps a well running to an oventually crash.. who knows.)
We aren't dealing with a single doodidly server that anyone can setup, i'm fairly certain NCSoft Game servers themselves and even the loggin servers are quite massive hardware beasts. Quite alot to go wrong.

Yea we got kinda screwed here too. Not as bad as 70% of people DCing, or leader disco. But one by one we lost key people in a battle where we needed everybody.
I say this with no disrespect or animosity. But all we(Major large alliances) ask for is the servers to be up and stable for 2 hours once every 2 weeks.
Tech 1: You know, they're sieging right now. Think we should freeze it?

They should roll the server back to the point of the crash; at least where the Castle status is concerned. No one should win or lose a siege due to login issues; that's for sure.
But think of the winning sides of those castles, and the uproar they are going to make. Or, assume NCSoft doesn't roll the castles back, and the uproar that is going to come from those people that lost castles.
It's a lose/lose either way, in terms of not ******* anyone off.
If it were me? I'd roll the castles affected back to the starting times and call it a mulligan today. "Good luck in two weeks!"
I agree. I run most of my web hosting through UNIX servers. Not that I do any of the server work (that's why I pay someone to host me. I just don't want to do it.)
I have one Windows server, and that thing and I fight at least once every month. I'm getting REAL tempted to take it out back, Ol' Yeller style.
But then... I should probably back up the data I have on there before putting a double-barrel load of buckshot into it, yeah?
With the customizations they have to be running on their windows boxes, my bet is hardware failure, sure easy replacement from hot standby parts, except this new part is newer... maybe a slightly different driver... customized windows system dousnt like it... instability ensues...

Players may be unable to log into the game. We are working to resolve this problem as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding!
(P.S. I will be unable to post anything under the "Server Maintenance" at this time.)
Update: Our network team will be bringing down all worlds within the next 10-15 minutes to resolve the login server outage. The expected downtime is approximately 60 minutes or less. Thank you for your patience, and we apologize for the downtime.
Question... when the server is brought down like this, the respawn of bosses is affected? I was at Baium...
Does the respawn count start all over again, or it resume from where it left?

The more I think about it, the more I believe an exploit was found. Login server goes down, then emergency maintenance, and now this:
The Public Test Server is being brought down for the weekend (August 18th and 19th). It is possible this downtime will extend into the following week. We will let you know when we expect to bring the PTS back up as soon as we have more details. We apologize for the downtime, and thank you for your patience.
Everything should reset so that means gold piggy respawn <3.
Bad news is I'm forced to stay up longer than I wanted to. I have to wake up early (first -1) to go to church (second -1) to talk to reverand for wedding monday (+1).
With servers down (another -1) that leaves me at -2.

ok - here is the thing that I do not understand - if (LOL so hard I almost pee'd myself) ran unix servers, why are they not mirrored? Granted at work I do not run MMO's, but we have our critial systems mirrored so that if a server goes down, there is a .0001 sec lag between the switch from the primary to the secondary system. I know that a system like that costs a little bit of bling (we did an upgrade about 6 months ago... lets just say the cost was in the 7 figure range) - but I gotta think that NC HQ has to have the money for something like that.
Also- my heart goes out to those that were involved with a seige - but if they roll back the servers to the start of the issue - are they going to give something to those of us that were grinding or just you??? It blows for all of us if while grinding or crafting if they did that - not just the 2% that it affected.
there is a slight chance that the seiges could be set to another day, or to next week. We'll have to see.
Please be patient, being without lineage and loosing so far ONLY $0.10 (for 5 hours of play, yes that's right 10 cents USD) won't start the apocolypse or kill you. (as long as you don't have a weak heart and have a zero-insane temper for minimalistic things)...
Use this time for other things.... ranting in the manner most people are doing right now is nothing but pointless in it's current state. They are aware of it, they are doing everything they can ATM to fix it. Please be patient, go outside, watch some tv, read a book, browse the internet for interesting things. It'll likely be up and running tomorrow morning. (nothing like having a good night sleep anyways)
Things like that are foreign to a lot of the community members here. They want their L2, and they want it now!
Now daddy, now!
Yes, Varuca.
Now!
*cough*
And the indicator on the Vault home page (http://l2vault.ign.com) shows servers up, but still shows login down. Sieg shows down, but as it is based on Glop...
Point of reference, I didn't actually do that. Just found it in a random link one day. Laughed my butt off (do you know how hard it is to sit when your butt is no longer attached?) so I felt like sharing.
Seems like no one else is having a problem since no one is posting... but it's crazy cuz L2Vault is showing the login server as down too. =/ Maybe I'll just give up and go to bed... just wanted to buy more bows though, instead of waiting till the morning.
I just tried it again, and the login server is definitely up and functional. Jkoster may be correct. It did seem a little sluggish to me (it paused for about 5 seconds after I clicked "Log In"), but I was able to get in fine.
Also (hehehehehe) anyone else who is logged in besides me, noticed that there is sell shops already setup - (crosses fingers if you get my hint) - I am quick for setting up my craft of sell shops... but not that fast.
I know people ARE logging in, but it shows as down.
Are they currently logging in? LOL I thought maybe the login server went up just long enough for everybody else to log in, then went down again. :p (That's what I get for trying to do other stuff while waiting for the servers to come back up...)
iunno... maybe I'm giving up too early.... although, I have done at least a full minute of that super-speedy clickclickclickclickclick skill. Maybe I should stop typing and click some more...
It Definetly is NOT up for me Alyra down here in australia, and it also is showing as NOT up for that europe ping site, maby pass this onto the techs?
Yes, I am. (It may be worth noting too though that the ping site everyone uses hasn't worked correctly for some time. It always shows Sieghardt as being down.)

That is a matter of getting him the IP address for it, which I believe Splatter said he was trying to do in an earlier post.
Perhaps someone at NCSoft can whip up a proper monitor and distribute it as a part of the fansite kit?
Hm. Wait, that would reveal server IPs.
Maybe distribute the PHP to call the script on NCSoft servers in the fansite kit?
Those who suggested a DNS flush were right on the money. I just finished chatting with our network team and they explained that the change in DNS may be causing some folks to not be able to connect right away. Try these steps, then try to log in again:
To Flush DNS:
From the Windows desktop click 'Start' and select 'Run'.
In the blank, type in the tree letters cmd and click 'Ok'.
You should be at a black command prompt.
Type in the command console:
ipconfig /flushdns
You should see a message 'Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache'.
I should mention that you'll want to remember the path so you can pull that line out later. You typically do not need anything beyond the 127.0.0.1 localhost to function.
This game has been up for 3 years, and I think this problem from last night demonstrates why NCSoft really needs to finally fix the crashes that occur when you take a castle. See the posts about people DCing and being unable to reconnect after the castle falls. This bug has been around for ages, and happens often. Come on, FIX IT!
