Zaken's Curse Hat Award - Who Should Receive it.

General Discussion Started Last reply 53 posts
It's obvious that merely giving one, or two hats to the character with the "most" gold coins on each server is a bad idea. So I did some math to try and determine what a reasonable number of gold coins could be that should qualify a character for the hat.

If my memory is correct, the event lasted for 14 day. Correct?

The gold pig spawned every 10 minutes. There are 6 spawns per hour max, assuming the pig is killed as soon as it spawns. (Yes, I realize this isn't perfect because it takes time to kill the pig, moving the clock forward, but it's a close estimate).

In any given 24-Hour period, a character can shoot pigs for 3 hours, so....

6 gold pigs per hour.
3-Hours per day of Pig Hunting (3 x 6) = 18 pigs per day
14-Days X 18 Spawns = 252

It would be rediculous to award the hat to those who managed to somehow kill each and every pig spawn every 10-minutes, over every hour of Pig hunting allowed in the event.

In conclusion, it appears reasonable to set the bar at 50%, awarding the hat to each character holding 126 gold coins.

Well then the item would not be at all unique, which was the entire point of giving it to the person(s) with the most golden coins, was it not?

Give 'em something else maybe, but certainly not a hat to everyone with 126 coins.
I think a posteriori it's hard to fix anything, but it's pretty obvious where the flaw of this thing was: golden apigas and pirate bootys should've been no_trade no_drop no_sale etc. Better luck next time!

Let's take a closer look at that.

Over a 24-hour period, if a gold spawns in one spot every 10 minutes, that would yield a spawn 144 times, over 24-hours, or 2,016 times over 14-days.

For each 126 gold coins, that would equate to only 16 hats per spawn area.

This of course assumes a 24/7 farming of gold coins, which is the maximum.

So if 16 hats are awarded per pig area at max., is that really too much? I don't think so, nor do I think the number of spawn areas X 16 hats would actually be the total given out, as that would require a totally efficient distribution of gold coins, which won't happen.

But you know EllieBelly, even if you are right, it seems to me the threshold should be based on what one character could reasonably achieve to be considered worthy. The alternative is few legit players will get hats, which can't be what NC intended.

-Bambam
Considering how many pig spawn area's there were... not to mention the fact you could get it from the super pigs...

Your likely talking over 200+ hats per server. I think thats a tad bit overboard.

Lets face realty here, its going to go to who bought em. Farmers are selling 40-70,000 of the pirate booties in town, and you **** well know that some bought a few thousand just to risk it since once your in S you've got nothing better to spend your money on.

Good point, but I also neglected to factor in the "fail" ratio. Not every chest yielded a gold coin. In fact, my personal experience was close to 35% failure, and 65% success. Given that, my calculation should cover the Super Pig spawns.

-Bam
Your math is somewhat flawed... I was thinking about the same thing, but your rule stands only for "fair" players. What if I had nothing better to do and I was equipping my event bow every 10 minutes? See a golden pig/super huge cursed pig? Equip, kill, get the golden apiga, move on... You can even move between areas this way and get the golden piggies from different towns. Yea, I know I am describing one-in-a-million situation, but some people really want that hat...
I agree with above posters, they should have made Pirate booty non-tradeable.
I think they wanted to make the booty non-tradeable but instead it became non-freightable. Someone flipped the wrong bit.

If you put bows on at least 4 characters on an account you could hunt 4 different fields for goldens. I say four because usually anything more than that is too much. I did this for a bit but it was just too much of a hassle.
Yes. They should have made both the golden apiga and the pirate booty "bound" to the player who gets them. And the reward hat, too. Yes, then the players with too much time to spend on killing pigs would have won. But I am OK with that. Also, even if the "player" with the most golden apiga coins would have been a farmer, he would not have been able to sell the reward hat, so no profit for them from the event.

As it is now, the reward hat can go to a player who has not killed even a single golden pig himself. And that is just wrong. Why give somebody an event reward for being rich? A player should have actually participated in the event to be eligible to win.

It's obvious that merely giving one, or two hats to the character with the "most" gold coins on each server is a bad idea. So I did some math to try and determine what a reasonable number of gold coins could be that should qualify a character for the hat.

You are also forgetting the fact that Bonny gave out the golden apigas, too. How do you account for that?

And you factor one golden pig in a given location. But what if you were set up with multiple accounts and multiple computers, so that you could farm golden pigs in more than one location and then transfer the boxes to one toon?

And let's not forget the fail rate. Not all boxes yield a golden apiga.

Either way, I don't expect that I'll get a hat, since I only managed about 9 golden apiga.
NCsoft loves lottery. Let's just make a big lottery.
Take all the characters who have a golden apiga, give a weight of 1 for each golden apiga and roll the dice. Those with more golden apigas will have more chance to get it, but it will probabily fall in the hand of a complete noob that will sell it for a few adenas and the next owner will sell it very expensive until it finds a definitive owner.
Oh btw... WTS Pirate Booties ! (not boobies!)
Also don't forget when you have box - most people do - your kill speed is either twice that, or you hunt for longer period of time, giving opportunity to shoot down more Golden pigs. Then you give all bootys from your box to your main.
Take one char per spawn point. Log him in once every 10 min. Equip bow. Kill. Log out. With the target/ skill macros this process is pretty seemless. Each set of bows will last you about 9 hours if you only use them this way. Unless you do this for 9 hours a day... you will stack up on bows on multiple chars. So.... every 24 hours give a new set of bows to a different char. I was eventually raking in 20-24 golden apigas per hour.

But here's the thing.

I could have farmed mad apigas if I chose to. But I chose NOT to. Why? After hours upon hours of hard, boring work.... anyone can come right from under me and throw adena at the event and win. This was so disheartening. After about the 250th booty I sold them all for 10m to a clan mate who already bought about 300.
I thought the hat was not tradeable.
I have only 63 Golden apiga.

I get 2 salvatioin bow from pigs ^^

And not get any circlet form bunny -.-

Only get enchat D, C, B (only 3 B) and a lot of scroll, i have 26 scroll of shield -.-
I opened like first 6 booty chests, then I found out they are tradeable. So I started to sell them. Made around 20 mil selling only those chests in shops overnight (yeah I was overpriced bastard but people bought them ...)

I thought the hat was not tradeable.

It isn't. Neither are golden apiga.

But pirate's booty is.

I thought the hat was not tradeable.

btw its not a unique item,

zaken drops pirate hats at 1/50 ratio already atm, already one on kain and alot on other servers

yeah, it was amazing what people would pay for those.

I played the event each day to the max allowed, and in all the many times I turned in to Bonny, I got one single gold coin. I hardly think that needs to be accounted for.

As for using multiple accounts and giving all the gold coins to one character, so what. If a person has multiple accounts and wants one of its characters to have all the gold coins, who really cares?

As for the notion of having one character in each spawn point logging in only to kill the golden pig, that is just rediculous. Not only is that a total and complete hassle few, if any would actually do, but the chances of "you" being the one to kill the pig are small any way.

The point is simple. If this event is considered from the standpoint of a Legit player, than it is from that standpoint the number of coins to obtain a hat should be decided upon.

Thing is, no one knows what will be required, which is even better. Chances are you will have a number of people falling in with one of the following categories:

1) A character with as many gold coins as it was able to obtain, either itself, through multiple accounts, and/or purchasing.

2) A Character with a few gold coins, as they either sold theirs, or didn't care.

So if the requirement for the legit player is say, 126, we won't have thousands of players with 126 gold coins, but more like a few with thousands of gold coins, few more with hundreds, few more with 126, and the vast majority with less.

At the end of the day, if the threshold is 126, and the character with 2,000 coins gets one hat for its 2,000, the item will still be rare on the server. In other words, if the premise used to determine the number of coins to obtain the hat is reasonable, the insanity of the player base itself will ensure it is rare because of its belief system in the first place. lol

How many of you will have 126 gold coins on a character when the tally is taken? Few I would guess, because you either sold them, or gave up on the gold pigs because of your concerns.

Not true, They are two different hats..

The first mat's hat (event reward) is blue with gold trim and looks like the pig wrangler hat.

Zaken's hat is Black with skull and crossbones on the front.
After I opened my first 5 booties and they were all empty, I decided to just sell them. I also havent gotten anything higher than 1 set of ewb/eab's from the event. have alot of buff scrolls I guess, but I dont need accumen on my PW.
You're right, it probably doesn't matter in the final analysis

As for the notion of having one character in each spawn point logging in only to kill the golden pig, that is just rediculous.

There is no E in ridiculous, and this is the best way to get them. There is no possible way to earn them faster... and it makes use of every possible second with the bow. In a ten minute round I got about 6 golden pigs... and it's a simple matter of clicking a few buttons. It's no hassle at all. It's actually easier than just hunting apiga, because you have the macros target and attack for you. All you do is pick up and log. Suggesting anything other than this or buying booty for Golden Apiga's sake and I'd call you an idiot.
I have 9 golden apiga and I am going to keep them in my pocket forever.
Don't know about the rest of you but that 10 minute spawn window didn't always happen. I hunted at Innadril castle most of the time where 3 golden pigs spawned. Sometimes yes, about every 10 minutes rotating between the three... but most times they were VERY slow in spawning. Same thing in HV (before it became bot haven) and in Rune.

I ended up with 220.
Just to be on topic...

ME

Just a joke... apparently the main "you-know-who" owners on Gustin already have a huge competition between them over that hat. So we havent seen thousands booties for sale...cuz they kept them all.

I have 175 golden but im terrified of how many those guys have.

This is what I thought at first, but it's mostly untrue. Yes, there are multiple spawn points around castles, but it is very spread out. You'd have to hop on your strider and give the castle the once over every 10 minutes to be sure you got them. This was very inefficient. What I did do was go to Rune castle. The way it was designed (all the pigs are packed into to the front side of the castle)... you'd only have to cross the distance of the bridge spamming your target macros to get the golden pigs.

Or.. you must realize that other people was doing this very same thing. I intentionally stayed on the same toon for 10 minutes just to make sure... and sure enough~

Yea, me and a friend tried Rune castle and worked that area on the bridge until it too became infested with bots. Even using macros didn't help.

I have 3 accounts and hunted with all three though only boxed 2 at a time leaving the 3rd at one place or another just to target the golds.

Btw, how many golden apiga did you end up with using your method?
Like I said, I was getting around 20-24 an hour. Because of the competition (aka bots) I had to log in ahead of time and start spamming or else I'd miss it. Sometimes I missed it. It doesn't matter if the area is infested though. The bots won't stop to attack the golden pigs... so get the first hit and it's yours. It helps to know good and tight spawn points. I picked Rune Castle, Varka Village, Ketra Village, and Fortress of Resistance. Rune castle sometimes yielded extra per hour due to the 2 golden pig spawn points. Rune also yielded a few Super Huge pigs an hour.... which a second account hunted.

Not sure about other servers, but pigs only spawned outside the eastern gate of Heine on Lionna. I ran around the city a few times the first couple days of the event, just to be sure and, sure enough, no pigs on the western side. No bots, either.

On the eastern side, you could go several hours without seeing a golden pig. I had the spawn-points pretty well mapped out, and knew that the golden pig didn't spawn beyond a certain area (in fact, the entire Heine pig-spawn area was no bigger than one of the city-isles of Heine itself)... and, still, no golden pigs.

No bots either, and rarely even any other players.
The nice thing is no one knows how NC will handle this. So, there are players with thousands, and players with hundreds, and below of gold coins.

All NC need do is pick a number. Let's say they start with 126 as I suggested, and just query the server how many individual accounts have one character with 126, or more, gold coins. If the number is relatively low, seems like a good number, and that player with 2,000 only gets one hat.

If 126 yields more hats than they intended, try 176, and so on, until the number comes close to what is comfortable.

That is really all I"m saying, while also trying to explain a way the average legit character can actually stand a chance of obtaining a hat.

-Bambam
i got one golden apiga just from bonny right now so imo i should get it! ty.
Dont forget its following a Script given by the Koreans that have made this event. So there is nothing to do even if you have the best idea to share the Hats over the legit players. *bable

Well, I would say forget about the hat all together if the event-creator(s) want(s) to "redeem him/herself or safe face" in my eyes.

I still have my Salvation Bow and that is good enough for me. Some may even have gotten the other rewards like the circlets of that other hat. Again that should be good enough in my eyes.
The scrolls/Life Stones etc are consumables and that's something that works out "oke" in the end anyway.

The "First Mate's Hat" at this time is might not be seen as reward for "competitive earned Golden Apiga" anyway for reason(s) stated in various other threads.

Frankly I would not dare to wear that Hat after this fiasco as a player if I had a ounce of competitive spirit left in me..
God, the embarrassment alone of people wondering if I indeed earn it via self-gathered Golden Apiga or having it "bought".

If NCsoft would opt out of "rewarding" the Hat it can still be seen as a good money sink, right?
Other then that some folks which tried to earn rewards in this event might see it as a good move on NCsoft part making a clear statement that if a event goes haywire due to smart outside programmers they do indeed flag it as wrong game play.
TBH, I don't even care about the hat, but I do care that my saved up Gold Coins actually have a chance of meaning something.

If NC allowed us to turn them in, as regular coins, but with a greater chance of better prizes, I'd be thrilled.

Burn the hat for all I care.

-Bambam
I'd wear it if I got the hat but agree, we should be able to turn those gold apiga in for something worthwhile.
Put Bonny back in and have her give buffs for 1 golden apiga.

Will it help everyone? Probably not, but it would be a nice little benefit if you really didnt feel like logging your dragger in :)

It's obvious that merely giving one, or two hats to the character with the "most" gold coins on each server is a bad idea. So I did some math to try and determine what a reasonable number of gold coins could be that should qualify a character for the hat.

In conclusion, it appears reasonable to set the bar at 50%, awarding the hat to each character holding 126 gold coins.

Your thoughts?

-Bambam

Bam, you also have to take into account that most people in this game have a buff pet (i know some with more than one buff pet). Meaning they could hunt for 6 hours a day. So in your calculations:

6 hours of pig hunting x 6 pig per hour = 36 pig per day
14 days of event x 36 G pigs per day = 504 golden apiga

(not including the super pigs that spawned once an hour in areas that gave a 1 in 3 chance of giving a box.)

Also , NC soft made it where the boxes could be sold. So people who wanted the hat and had extra money to spare could buy the boxes if you wanted.

Reasonable to set the bar at 50%??? Thats just saying you give up and you want something for nothing. NC soft said the MOST GOLDEN ON EACH SERVER not the top 50% of each server. Where as i see your point to give more hats make more people happy but this was about numbers.

No numbers = no hat
(quickreply)
i think, if there was a bar for coins, and you have more than that you get a hat, it should be like 400.

and now, for a better idea. give the hat to the person with the MOST golden coins on each server, and investigate them for botting. before banning them, remove the hat from their inventory and drop it on the ground. then investigate the next person that picks it up...round-robin bannings fer all ye scurvy mates, yarr!

edit: and also, the hat should be sellable.
The idea of a pro100farmer getting this supposedly "special" hat makes me sick. Am I dreaming or did they say that there would be measure taken to ensure that these scum DID NOT recieve this prize?

Alyra did say they will be checking accounts to make sure "the souless" does not get the reward.
They should announce the names of the winners.

Player_Example: /Petition aassffiijjkk This person is obviously a bot, as are the 22 others near him that I can't read the letters of their names, nor have the time to type them all.

GM_example: Thank you for your report, we will look at this issue and if it can be proved the party is involved in activity against the TOS, proper action will be taken.

NCsoft_Example: We are pleased to announce the winners of the Event:

Sieghardt: aassffiijjkk

etc..... Would be funny in a wierd way.

As for multiple accounts, sure, but if a player with multiple accounts wants to pool all their coins on one character, good for them. One nice part of this event is we don't know how many coins you need to win. So what I have been trying to say, is if they simply come up with a number and divide by how many Accounts (1 character per acct) would receive the hat, they can keep it semi-rare and that person who thought they needed 2,000 coins will still have them exhausted, even though it may have only required 200.

It should be a number any one legit. acct. could achieve obtaining. That is what I'd define as "fair".

-Bambam
Take into consideration taht even if the bot factor was ruled out completely, the Pirate Booty Item was -still- tradeable. Meaning that there would/was players that simply sold their boxes for profit. That makes the magic number your looking for (200 or w/e) would be null and void because of this.

No it doesn't, because those players buying chests are in the same crew as those thinking they need huge numbers of coins to win. I agree with you, in that whoever gets the reward, it is likely it was either obtained by the souless, or those who use the souless for adena to buy chests. However, think about my suggestion, as those folks will get the reward no matter, but my way, so will legit players and those who did not purchase chests.

Even if a reasonable number like 126 was used, I bet most of those legit players, even with multiple accounts, will not have that many gold coins. They either didn't try to compete, sold what they got, or are on the other extreme and have tons of them. We can only guess, but NCsoft actually knows; it only need query the data.

-Bam
i hope we get something from bonney for gold apigas. i was thinking about buying things for let's say 50 gold apigas - scrolls or those circlets or something.
it looks stupid to gather them and then get nothing, just because someone bought thousands of booties ;/

That actually sounds quite illegal to do if a character has the most golden apiga, they pretty much have to award it to them regardless so i doubt she SAID that, especially with the legal people at ncsoft there, cos they would never let a CM say something like that.

Actually, she did. Good luck pouring over the 40+ pages in the original thread to find the quote. >_< She said it when she announced that more than one hat would be given out, and said in addition to that, they would look at the accounts to be sure it wasn't given to the "soulless" ;) CONFIRMED! I don't see how it would be illegal to say if they believe a character obtained the gold apigas through illegal program use then they can disqualify them. Seems pretty simple if ya ask me. :/
Ihave like 4 golden apigas, the event was very disappointing. Specially considering many of the pigs were hunted/botted right in towns... completely unacceptable really.

Dude... you really aren't getting the point of this event. He who has the most wins! Let me clear this up for you.....

Most : 1) in the greatest quantity, amount, measure, degree, or number: To win with the most golden apiga
2) the greatest number: higher than all the rest.
I get the point; doesn't appear you get mine.

When NCsoft failed to make the booty non-sale,trade,etc., it goofed, thereby requiring a look at what the average character could fairly obtain in terms of gold coins based upon fair play and maximum participation.

A contest that allows one to purchase and trade the item a prize is based upon, is no contest at all. It's like saying, we are going to throw 1,000 tennis balls over the net, and the person that catches the most wins. Then you have a guy on the other side of the net who hires a bunch of his friends to give him all the balls they catch, and bribes the others to give him theirs. Seriously, that can not possibly be what was intended by this event, as then there is no contest at all.

NCsoft goofed, so it needs to re-think how it awards the prize, and how many to award.

-Bambam
The only thing that gave an award to a person that couldnt buy it was the first 2 weeks of fishing. The rest of the event have had items you can sell. This is something that just happens.

But all in all The most is the most... not 50% not 40% not 30% its the most.

The event is pretty much over and do you really think nc soft is going to rethink their event after the fact?
Hopefully next time...
