A so far good experience, new player

I feel inlcined to just posta brief message here, due to the fact ive really been happy with this game so far, really happy.
Ive played SWG for the last 2 years, then went to try Eq2, avoided a few other popular ones because im not into blocky looking characters - so I heard a bunch about this game -

I felt a bit dissapointed to discover this game isnt even on the shelf any more, in fact apparently has been pulled for about 2 years now, made me think is this thing really even worth it then?

Went thru all the trouble of the downloads, subscriptions, etc (had a few probs along the way ) took total of 3 working days to get it all up -

Started out, and was really, really impressed with some really detailed and great looking characters to choose from and edit. So got in game, spent quite a while just adjusting, noticed, of course as everyone has already indicated, alot of bugs here and there -

2nd day in started getting more comfortable with stuff, and began realizing what a really, really great game this is, and the bugs just went out of concern as gameplay enjoyment increased.

I never liked grinding, but it didnt even feel like grinding once I started getting up past lvl 7 or so, venturing further out, some really cool monsters, huge areas to explore, really nice rewards, I enjoy often just watching my character in combat, I actually *like* the combat, there isnt all these goofy rrediculous animations going off for the specials, my character is a figher, and when I hit a weapon special, the weapon is doing the animation, not some silly cartooney bombs going off and all that junk (like in Eq2, Swg) - and hence it makes combat alot more fun and intense to watch. I like the detail put into the weapons and the personalization for each characters armor types, it makes it feel worth waiting for that new sword or armor peice. Im not going to go on forever tho...

Lastly as Ive poked around the site here, im like 'wow', all the features in this game, castle sieging, arena type tournaments, the nice pics of all the various weapons/armor so a new play *can* actually look and descide what they want rather than having to ask a ton of people or miss out on something, very cool :)

And I better stop now. But anyhow, cant predict how long or much better the fun factor will be for this game for me, as ive just started, but right now I feel *for me* this is better than both Swg and Eq2, and to make comparisons would require a a whole nother 4 paragraphs, overall Im liking this alot.
Nice to see a positive post from a new player for a change :)
I'm glad you're enjoying the game so far, and I hope you'll stick around :)

What server are you on?
The game has it's good points and bad points. For me, I like the beautiful artwork and places to grind in, and that plus a few good friends in the game and a generally helpful community on the boards outweigh most of the negatives. Many people, myself included, don't like the economy or the level of difficulty in leveling up in gear. But there are also players who seem to thrive on those things and consider those aspects of the game just fine.
Was happy to read a good post about l2. Welcome to game.
I bet it will take him a month, max 2 to notice all the crappy sides of this game and change his view totally.

same here man
hope all goes well

I hope you're playing on Kain...

Then you'll most likely get to meet me. :cool:
@Champa

Thanks, I know how some things can certainly become dulled after a while on any Mmo, I doubt this is any different, although I like the overall feel of how theyve done this game up :)

selected Gustin, seems to be one of the two highest topic posts for the servers, and has active guild wars.

@Oldfart

I have to agree, really nice looking world and 'life' theyve created it seems, I like it alot. I dont know how truly *bad* (or good?) the money/gear system is, although now at level 14 honestly if anything I see this being less demanding than the other Mmo's ive played, Swg required many millions just to get a top grade suit of armor, and getting good weapons was similiar, here Ive already obtained just from looting and quests over 100k, gotten a great sword for my level and leveling fast, at least a level per hour *when* i descide to go at it strait with no breaks/adventuring, but, like you said, its that much better grinding when you can enjoy the game during that.

@SpIReLoTa

Thanks for the welcome :)

@_Charmille_

Thats what happened with Eq2, although there is a difference, Eq2 had all this huge npc interaction, voice, etc, quests, but, I found the things that would last the longest, things that we have to live with at high levels/Pvp/Armor/etc, did not have quality, limited selection of *unique* gear to personalize, absolutely horrid combat system involving fifty billion stupid specials, most of which showed cartooney anims that just took away from combat immersion, and, worst of all, basically no Pvp content, (aside from Pvp), being able to siege castles, have tournaments, just these 2 things seem to me to set this game way apart from those others, something to continue enjoying long after high levels are reached where most Mmos seem to offer at best standing around and showing off your prettiest suit and 15 Mil weapon.

Btw - Im not a *he* :p (assumptions...)

@MissWinona

Im going to not put down what race I picked, only because *if* its not a great race, etc for long term, I dont want to know about it until ive gotten high enough to where it wont matter, because I will never restart then :) - I just did what I did in every MMo ive played, picked what I really wanted to be, regardless of Pvp restrictions discovered later :)

Thanks, yes, I found the quest link and picked up on a number of local quests, drop rate from some monsters to get a certain item for a quest can get ugly in this game ive noticed :p

@spliffy

Thank you :)
Hi there, welcome to L2, it's not as friendly as other mmorpgs out there but it's good if you know how to deal with it.
Watchout for scabies if you're no his server, he's a pker and rejoices at killing off newbie players :eek:.
This game as many other mmorpgs are about interaction with other players, so ask around the forum of your server for a good clan so you can get started on the "good side" of L2.
I'd probably have a billion things to tell you but the only thing i want to say now is to not have to huge expectations, as the higher the expectations the bigger the disappointments if they are not met...
welcome to game hope you have fun

LOL always the pessimist Charmille, wow

I'm a realist, not an idealist nor an optimist. I'm also not so naive as to think that this game is all good and dandy. There's lots of crap, especially at the endgame where it all boils down.

And i'm an Orcist....

Welcome to the game Orig_Desha. I wouldn't worry about the game going dull....

I've been playing for over 3 years and just turned 40. And started playing with enchants :)
Well, if she put up with star wars galaxies and EQ 2, she'll love this game. And I wouldn't say this game's "crappy" side is all that bad, every game has a crappy side, you can't say a single game is perfect.

Oh and Welcome to the Game, hope you enjoy your stay.

Well, if she put up with star wars galaxies

She? Could be a He :)
I thought she said she was a she in a previous post? In this same topic i believe.
I think on the first page she stated that someone calling her he was so naive or whatever :p.

anyway welcome to the game! have fun

It's the same here. Go to Giran and look at some of the prices and you will see.

You can't grind for xp and make money. At least enough money that you can get anything decent. I don't know swg but from what I've heard (and experienced) this game has one of the hardest economies unless you really apply yourself.

And the xp grind slows significanlty. It actually can get to the point where you are killing several mobs for just .01% of xp.

But enjoy the game and welcome.

That's yer common orc brain at work ;).
While it's true, B grade,A grade, and S grade are far more demanding than Ng,d,c grades, The only saving grace is, everything is tradeable and you can craft it for your own.

That being said, i find this game one of the easier to make money in, that is, if you apply yourself. Yes, you'll have to work for what you want, but that's a boon in my opinion, I remember a long time ago, finally after oh so long of hunting for the blades, crafting two katana's to make my dual katana's. Of course, that was my first real craft and It was a real sense of accomplishment.

Other games, it's not the same, it's "raid or die". In my opinion, this is a game that's more casual friendly due to everything being tradeable for the most part.

...although now at level 14 honestly if anything I see this being less demanding than the other Mmo's ive played, Swg required many millions just to get a top grade suit of armor, and getting good weapons was similiar, here Ive already obtained just from looting and quests over 100k, gotten a great sword for my level and leveling fast, at least a level per hour *when* i descide to go at it strait with no breaks/adventuring...

sounds like you are perfect for L2. as was said, there are some people that find the ecconomy hard, but there are a million ways to make money in this game (killing other players is no longer one of them) and if you are a creative person who doesnt mind spending some time on dropsites/questsites to figure out your next ubertastic-adena-making plan, it can actually be a really fun process. and as you've already found, making new characters (supplied with gear from former characters) to run through the newbie quests and re-experience the game from another angle, is one such moneymaker. you've got seven character slots for a reason ^^

sounds like you are perfect for L2...

If that's true, then Orig_Desha must be a bot. :eek:
yes. It seems the impression I get is although at this point where I am at it is similiar, actually easier than the other mmo's ive played, it will get significantly more difficult, thats ok - if the game continues to be enjoyable throughout the process, thats all that matters to me :) , normally I dont play real hard, being it took me all of 6 months in Swg to get to lvl 90 when other people would get there in one or 2, so all I really care is the game remains fun.

I had no idea so many people would respond to my message here lol - I cant find it in me to attempt to respond to all of you, but I read through all the messages and, thanks alot for the welcome and advise from everyone! :)
Try to find a good, friendly clan ASAP, this game is all about the people and a clan can help you level and get better gear. Welcome to the game :)
I have to agree with Aspecti.

One person can only do so much, and before long that one person runs a major risk of burning out because so many things are just unattainable (at least with any semblance of pacing).

A clan is designed to help these matters. The older members help the younger, who in turn help those who came after them.

I have been with my clan since C1, and were it not for them I doubt I would have come back after a computer meltdown in C3.

I bet it will take him a month, max 2 to notice all the crappy sides of this game and change his view totally.

And if somehow he doesn't have this view, you'll be sure to help him adjust won't you?

Real nice, Charmille. The guy posts a good thread and before it's answered 5 times along come you with this crap.

"Gee, I wonder why new players don't stick around? It's probably because of (fill in usual idiot answers here).... Couldn't be because I crap on the game NON-STOP with every post!"

Great job as usual.

Orig_Desha,

Welcome to Lineage ][

The excerpt above from your original post is exactly how I feel, and it will prove a key reason why you will likely continue to enjoy this game.

I played beta in Korea, China and North America, then release for a total of 1.5 years. I took two years off and returned a month or two ago, and am loving the game again for similar reasons as you.

These games, particularly pvp centric games, bring out a competitve edge in players, which is good. However, if you are one who can avoid measuring your own fun by what others have, or what levels others have achieved, that is a huge plus. In addition, if your focus is on the actual game play, and not as much on the XP meter, you are already way ahead of the reasons so many have left this game.

Lineage ][ is awesome on many levels. It's graphics, which include a wide variety of environments and mobs, combat experience, audio, clan wars, siege wars, seven signs, and on and on. The Library link to the <<Left gives a nice summary, overview and detail of all there is in this game.

The advice to find a good clan on your server is excellent advice. Grouping with a mix of different classes is what makes this game really shine, although it can be very solo friendly. Crafting also becomes important, and having a group of players you trust who can assist with these things will also make the game experience more fun.

Good luck. :cool:

And then the NC fanboys step up and proclaim that all is good and well in the land of Aden, branding all the nay-sayers as heretics, right?

Maybe the newcomers dont stick around because... THERE IS SO MUCH CRAP. Oh, but we cant have that, right? We cant say that L2 is far from perfect. That endgame is pretty much the [Censored] show of ebayed and botted toons and sieges are determined by the factor of which side has more CCs to use in order to get some new CP healers, CoV slaves and full, Drac HE parties.

You can close your eyes and sing tralalaa but it wont change the reality.

Or, one may simply have a different personality and internal make-up from you, where what appears to trouble you, is barely even on their radar. You project an awful lot.

This may come as a shock, but we don't all experience the game in the same way you do. That has absolutely nothing to do with having blinders on, and everything to do with how we each, individually, experience the game.

Have a nice day. -Bambam
Actually, i'm pretty sure a new comer to the game won't be experencing end game right away. Hell, a new comer won't be playing end game for a few months unless they bot or buy a character.

So your argument that they get sick because they see the injustice of the end game, is an invalid statement. Only your statement that implies that they'll be sick of the end game without experiencing it for themselves is a prime example of what drives people away.

I'm not a fanboy of any game, it just so happens, that WoW sucks, EQ sucks, EQ 2 sucks, Guild Wars i've beaten, and the rest i've yet to even remotely want to try, L2 is the only one that's good compared to the lot. So, your lovely fultile attempts to drive people away with your opinion is at a loss, why not try to tell them of points that they'll be seeing within the next few weeks etc.

I'm not saying classes are balanced or pvp is balanced, indeed, just like every other part of this game, it all deals with the currency, the more you have, the more powerful you are. And most likely, this will not change for at least a few more expansions.
Its very nice to see a new player come to the game with a positive attitude.
A little bit of advise, check out the newbie quests, some will reward you with extra soulshots (very important) or with a new weapon.
Here is a list of quests available and the rewards you get Quests (http://lineage2.stratics.com/content/library/quests/) .
Like others advised you may want to find a good clan to join their academy, not all clans are good or helpful and some would just take you in to get your rep points and not to help you out, so I advise you ask around and think twice before chosing wich clan to join. Im a bartz player, so I cant help you with advise on this, perhaps the gustin boards can offer some advise.

Have fun and enjoy L2, I have enjoyed it for over 3 years now and despite how much people complain sometimes they are still here paying their monthly fee, so things must not be as bad for them either :P
Char. I understand your frustrations at the L2 devs and I can sympathize. I however do not think that complaining as you complain is any help to the situation. Not in new peoples threads anyhow. Go for it when you're in on topic threads, I'm sure I've done it too ;)

There are plenty of threads out there that show the bad side of this game. If you coming into a noobs post and type up what you have it is just making the game worse and making noobs figure it's 100% impossible to compete with anyone in game.

Are you paying to complain or are you paying to have fun? I don't really care of the answer and won't chastise you or anything but I would like to remind you it is a game :p.

I was *attempting* to just let this topic ride, I just cant respond to all these posts haha LOL - but anyhow - I really loved this reply -

I as well played Swg for 2 years, then tried Eq2 as well myself.
They both had same problems in common, severley complex combat system that took away from the immersion of the game and made anyone that wanted to do well in Pvp have to focus solely on "the numbers", having to manage a rediculous amount of specials, and in Swg (dont know if Eq2 required it, never got that far) you had to waste huge time getting all these Uber buffs to even have a chance in Pvp, including their stupid ent buff- Then of course the horrid, horrid, horrid animations for the specials - looked so fake, so cartooney, very much reduced the fun in combat.

Okay, and as far as amount of "npc" content, I would say both Swg and Eq2 beat down this game, but, Ive already noticed something here in this - I actually enjoy the missions here *more*, I get the feeling someone actually put thought into these missions as to what would be *enjoyabe*, and the places they take place are fun to go to often. Imo, the whole npc thing is really just temporary tho, alike alot of people, I prefer to do what I want when I want, and end up finding good hunting spots and enjoying that, while doing a few quests here and there, and there sure is plenty of hunting avaliable.

Then lastly, in regards the the discussion here about "the end game", Swg post 90 content, terrible, and I can only surmise Eq2 is the same, I saw a similiar number of high levels just ound doing nothing, for hours. Even with Swg's pvp zones, faction base wars - btw which are really nothing more than 2 little groups of like 3 small buildings on each side players fight over - it made little difference, kinda hard to enjoy any "additional" content when the combat system is in poor shape internally and visually.

I do understand and realize im sure there are alot of ways players have discovered to exploit aspects of Pvp even in this game, wether it be during a castle raid, or during a tournament, strait out clan wars, etc - but thats part of it, if there was no way to gain an *edge* by looking for a good pre-planned setup for Pvp actions, then I think you would have the extreme opposite of most MMo's Pvp content, everyone would be battling with nothing more than an equal random chance for either side to win, there wouldnt even be a point to Pvp, be like 2 people betting on a number from a dice roll - hehe, now if you found out you could put a wieght inside that dice ahead of time and increase chance of it rolling your number, then Ive got an edge all the sudden, maybe the other person can do the same, or something else to help them, I think id rather be able to have an edge rather than combat be a random dice roll..

Are you paying to complain or are you paying to have fun? I don't really care of the answer and won't chastise you or anything but I would like to remind you it is a game :p.

Neither, I'm most likely quitting thanks to the lying Korean devs and the direction they're taking this game.
Well I can't say I blame ya, I've been very frustrated with other games dev teams and it must be even more very annoying when they're international.

Have fun wherever you go.

PS can I have your stuff? :p jk
That'd be anything but NC games.
it was people on THESE forums that suggested the selfbuff +runspeed that ultimately became zealot. i didnt hear you complaining then, even though you knew it was stupidly overpowered. they could have left well enough alone, not changed orchers at all, and kept boosting other classes in the way they did and things would have been better, imo. but you welcomed the addition to zealot, now some developer comes back and says "zomg, titan have huge p att AND huge run speed?? that very dangerly, nerf stick please." there was a post way back when, by some people who were subbing destroyer (and they only did so because YOU talked so highly of the class, so they thought they would uber pwnzor with it). these players, who were used to the runspeed AND damage of an archer) cried "zomg, destroyer is so slow, give us run or jump or something i get kited all the time! >.<" (as if people didnt tell them that was THE weakkness of the class!!) you know what my respose was?

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.
Zealot isnt even that big of a runspeed boost. Still plenty of classes that can outrun it and it can easily be negated with slow and root. Not to mention that they gave many classes a speedboost skill too.

And if you believe Zealot is the product of this site...

Are you paying to complain or are you paying to have fun? I don't really care of the answer and won't chastise you or anything but I would like to remind you it is a game :p.

I dunno if it's still the rule, but used to be you'd get a thread deleted and your forums banned for talking of quitting.

I sympathize with the sentiment. I've quit WoW a couple times now - frustrated with the long-standing bugs, inept design, and their tendency to collapse the integrity of the game to give everyone easy access to whatever they want.
The rule concerns "I quit" threads more, since they tend to turn into flame fests and other [censored].
It seem that NCSoft really try to make new player feel more welcome and less on the grind and more on the fun factor and it working good. New player now have so much benifit and fly through the 1-20 lvl. So Gratz to NCSoft for making it possible. This Post reminded me why I like this game before the high lvl pvp-zerk become a competition. It was the scenery, the char detail, the armor detail and the weapons..

I recall my Newbie Days when I was hunting for the the last 2k adena to buy a new 15k armor so eager to put it on to see what it look like, same for weapon. I did not know there was a set bonus, and pretty much buy and keep only the armor and weapon which look best on me. I spend a lot of town in D grade and try out all NG armor and weapon in the npc store. The beautiful scenery of some of the area was breath taking, it make me forget that cute kitty or unicorn will chew me up and spit me out in sec. I was more interested in getting up close and just seeing how the monster look, what weapon/armor they had- I end up die on the ground in area I should not be in but had good view of the scenery and the monster standing next to me. I often ask nicely to high lvl group player to let me tag alone just to see what the high lvl area look like and what monster it had. Many good group let me be the loot picker since they kill so fast while I just spam pickup. so while still in D grade mid lvl 27 I was in area and experience monster whom is 20-50 lvl above me. many high level player often ask me what armor set am I wearing, and I can't blame them for not knowing. Thinking back on myself who would not wear top grade full set for stats bonus instead of mix set armor/mixed grade armor/ non top grade armor just for look. I have an armor look for every scenery occasion. At one time I was standing next to a batch of grass and all my group say they can't see me even through i'm in group. LOL I'm blend right in with the grass.

Sorry was off topic, back to OP, this game has many great other thing beside the high end pvp and such, if your not focusing on leveling like crazy and alway thiking about xp there is an mystical world awaiting to be explore. I love the baby pet and the fishing and wish NCSOFT would add a farm house/land I can own and plant/raise fruit/plants like a real farmer. And also a pet farm where I would be able to collect and store the monster that I defeated at my pet farm so I can look at them. Sorry to be off topic, just saying that even through i'm only .0001% of the player that enjoy many others great aspect of this pvp-anywhere-anytime-might make right-it only a C grade soloing let call 2 more S grade archer for backup just incase we don't 1 shot the C grader and he make a run for it.

""!WTS fresh cut Gludio Apple not to be mistaken for Dark Elves Village Poison Apple which put people to sleep which is in my right hand, or was it my left hand? OH Miss would you like to try an sample... pick a hand both are good Apples""
Orig_Desha, welcome to the game.

I have bounced around about 10 other major MMO's, but always come back to L2 as even though it's 'old' now, nothing else out there comes even close. Every game has it's bugs (surely you'll remember the fun in SwG before they went Linear proffessions, the good ol' Nest Spinning missions?) That was why I quit SwG. Back then to achieve Jedi when Perma-death was a factor once you turn Jedi actually meant something, now, everyone can be a Jedi w/o much problems in due time :p

As to the end game, don't worry about it. The 'end-game' pretty much breaks down in every MMO out there. End game comes down to either reaching Max lvl and find that there's nothing but boredom awaits, or reaching max level and find out how sorely the PvP content is bad. That's true for every MMO.
@Goddess

Enjoyed reading your post alot :)

I actually agree with *alot* of what you put in there, in fact I very much enjoyed the many similarities in these that Swg offered (at least I think it does), awsome character customization, huge many options, many places to go, very good detailed looking characters. But when an Mmo has its developers descide to destroy the combat content, no matter how good it looks to me, Im finished with it - thats what happened there, having to rip myself away from 2 years spent on 2 characters, 1 lvl 90 and the other lvl 80, all the cool clothing/armor/weapons I spent months working for, all gone.
Honestly if I discovered the combat here was as ugly as Swg I would have quit as well, but I like it, it seems they have put as much detail into the combat/animations as they have the rest of the game, and it does not seem overly complex at all :)
I know what you mean too about clothing/armor for occasions heh, I had 3 different suits for occasions in Swg, armor for combat (sacrificed some defens for appearnace as well :) ), then 2 clothing sets for in towns (Serna's skin suit along with a Katana just looked too cool, always turned heads when shed walk into the cantina :p ).
Hehe even had 2 very long scripted macros that would switch between full armor suit and skin suit in about a second, was too much fun walking up in the skin suit and asking for a duel, they would be like 'okaay, its ur funeral..' then before combat started id hit the macro and instantly shed be clad in full bounty hunter assault armor weilding a top grade lightining cannon :) haha, they would be like 'woaaah' (ya, I was one of the few female bounty hunters)
Anyhow, now my post went way off topic too, but it was fun to read you post and share some of my similiar tastes as well :)
