Ok I was chatting last night about armor, what's available, what I can afford etc.
My EE is due to reach B grade soon and BW is completely out of the question however I know of a set of Zubai I could use which is what got me thinking. I've not looked into it yet but I said that if it was better than what she was currently wearing then 'correct' or not it was a step up.
That is definately not the norm and most players would shudder at the thought of using something that isn't 'perfect' for a class to wear.
I wondered if there are any other players that use armor sets for whatever reason that isn't classed as the norm.
I used zubei light for evasion on my PW instead of doom like most daggers, although it isnt really that unusual. I did have a rather rare set of tempered mithril in c grade though, which is not common at all(also an evasion set).
I know a sorc that runs around in doom robes, claiming they are the best b grade, but I just think he is crazy.
Orcs are frequently crazy. But that aside, I know a number of people who choose 'non top' gear for various reasons. Sometimes it is price related, honest people may not afford 'top' gear. Sometimes it is fashion related, there is a lot to be said for looking different, not everyone is a conformist. Sometimes its playstyle, a player will figure out a 'non normal' option in the game and realize that playing differently gives them an advantage compared to following the herd.
Yeah I have my HE in rind leather armor (not even a set bonus set!) and my TK in dwarven chain (no set bonus either but sooo pretty) and my BH is wearing comp (set bonus but rarer than FP)
I remember the first 75 SH (either on Gusin or globally, not sure) was wearing ... Blue Wolf robe set. Clanny SE was wearing Tallum Light (+ 2handed srowd) for some period of time, because of MP regen and somewhat better pdef than robes. It looked very cool actually.
I chose to go with avadon robes instead of BW for my cardinal, the choice was mostly fashion related :P
I also used Doom robes on my EE when I played as mana battery with a nuker friend.
She was my first char in open beta and it took me until c5 to take her to TK, if that helps XD
Oh and if you watch old l2 videos most people were wearing the 'wrong' gear. Like SE's wearing demon robes, nukers in the banana mithril, heck I even remember our clan leader back in the day was a sps and he paid out the nose for a BW robe set.
I play more as a Tanking DD than a speed/crit glady. I like it because I hit harder and have alot more hp/cp than the normal glady using Tallum Heavy set.
For d-grade I have the White set and Half-plate set. My first brig helm cost me 550k, so there's no way I can bring myself to pay 10 times that, and the robes were drops.
Does it count as "unusual" to be wearing C-grade thru your b-grade levels?
I have a baby dagger in full salamander skin, which as a human male looks pretty darn schveet. I'd love to own the Robe of Seal and its matching gloves/boots, as well as the Dwarven Chain.

I had the bannana robes. Kept saying "no, I don't have any buffs".
I was very traditional with my robes and simply went for BW ^^ I´ve seen more than 2 SEs wearing demon robe set, and even one with Zubei robe set.. even seen one with doom light set and a homunkulus, looked rather funny! Even seen an SPS in BW robe set.
Funniest thing I saw though was a guy in composite armor with a soulbow... don´t know if he wears compo for a joke though :P sure looks mismatched!
In previous chronicles when I was dead poor I used to wear unusual armor sets because I simply couldn't afford anything else.
In the Cruma Tower age I wore a borrowed banana suit (with gloves :P) on my human wizard with a Sword of revolution. The latter was my own choice because I just thought it was cool to have a sword :). Later after hitting 40 I got another Sword of revolution and I dualled them, I loved them :D.
All through that period I did keep getting asked if I could buff people or if I was a healer though , but because back then healers were rare and because I had excellent mana managing skills with Body to mind and later corpse life drain I ended up healing more 20-40 then I nuked anyway :P
Later when my boyfriend got some money he bought me Crystal staff with mana up, and later my favourite weapon of all time a Ghoul's staff with Mana up, there are dozens op people who argue that is doesn't actually increase xp/hour, but I loved the extra uptime.
Also I would have been using a banasuit all the way to 52 if my clanleeader and his wife hadn't quit and given me her demon set :(
Far far later I got a staff of evil spirits, which I traded a few months ago with some crazy guy for a +8 Homu. I regret that I really miss my staff :(.
Nowadays on Lionna I wear ***** armors and weapon, just because they're pretty :D, I have just finished crafting:
And I'm currently hunting for an Elven Tunic for her, which is a rare drop only black mid grade D grade robe, since I recently bought the bottoms for a sweet price.
My favourite set of all time is actually the coveted Elven Mithril Top and Bottoms, these are Top D grade Black robe set, not to be confused with an Elven Mithril set, which consists of Elven Mithril Gloves, Mithril Tunic and Mithril bottoms.
I have wanted this set ever since my Human wizard turned 20 wayyy wayyyy back, but even then they were rare and since they no longer drop, nor can be crafted, my chances of getting it are about 0.000001%.
Just as a note, if anyone has an Elven Mithril Tunic and Bottoms on Gustin or Lionna, please pm one of my characters, I will pay you 5 million for them (which is all I have atm :().
i have recetnly completed NM robe set for SH.
both because of pve playstyle (most dmg possible to save money, i have enough time) and it's sexi - no stripe leggins i am not a bloody circus attraction!
i was seriously considering majestic robes for a while.
I disliked the 'skirt' heavy armors on my female dwarf, but really loved the puffy pant ones. I wore this (http://scrap.5elements.net/Tarin.jpg) set for a good while. Plate with mithril scale gaiters.
In c-grade I gunned straight for dwarven chain, but migrated over to full plate once I really started to benefit from any extra defense I could get. I was tempted to try and OE the dwarvenchain but was never in the economic position to justify it.
Most unusual setups I encountered were on PPs: one wore zubei robe (constantly sitting and out-of-mana, I dunno why he wore it, not for the looks as far as I know, and he had enough money to afford smth better), another one wore NM robe Oo But he played female PP, and NM robe on them is just UBER cool, I can understand him :)
I had clan gladdie in doom light. He often went hunting with EE, so lights worked fine for him.
What else... I wore avadon heavy as a BD for quite some time, I couldn`t afford top-B, and zubei looked so awful.
ES in doom robes (she liked the look).
EE in bw light and dual sls.
SwS in tallum light.

I wore that on my SR for the extra weight carrying when I solo'd w/ out a pp. Can carry all the pots to add on to self buffs, lots of arrows and shots too.
Not a bad combo if you just want to invest in your weapon since the armor is really cheap.

Hey now it seemed like a good idea at the time. I got Accuracy on my first C grade bow. Coming from Lin1, I thought that hitting the mop more often to be more important that mana control.
Color me wrong lol
In PTS i subbed my EE as gladiator and dressed her into Zubei light, cause it looks good :P I dont know many glads that wear light armor. Another clicky (http://www.lineage2.com/images/item_screens/2384_1_2.jpg) with a pair of dual Raid swords, cause I think they are most awesome looking swords.

I wear light on my WL, does that count? :)
A lot of people give me a hard time over it, and I'm not going to argue that it's 'always best'. The reason I went with it initially was because I'm not a dualbox kinda guy, and I didn't know any SE's, but I did have an EE friend at my level I could team with a lot. I went zubei light and he gave me agility, and we went and aoe'd green/light blue mobs to great effect. Ever since that I've been carrying both a light and heavy set depending on where I go and who I hunt with. Light for EE and/or low level mobs, heavy for high level mobs.
I actually stand a better chance against equal level glads and warlords in my light as they have rather low base accuracy. I've won more duels against wl's in light than I have in heavy.
Well glads have also light passives, so its not THAT impossible, but a warlord in light, thats interesting indeed. But I agree, that with agility buff and green-light blue mobs, that can be pretty effective and definitely eye candy :)
Warlords get light masteries as well. The reason why it's not really popular is that we don't get any evade passives, have kinda average base dex, and you're not going to evade higher level mobs anyway (which is what most people usually hunt).
i ran around for a while in majestic heavy with my BD, it looked cool but i eventuallyjoined the masses and went tallum after i found out it really didn't do much for stun
Hm looked like reinforced leather, that was in c1 or 2 so maybe the textures changed a bit. Hell I don't even remember what robe textures looked like on fighters back then.

I do like how that polearm looks like, wish that stayed the same
I have to wonder how hard it would be for them to be a bit more open with the skins vs. properties. I love the attributes Majestic Light give, but it makes you look sooooo... wimpy. I can look much more badasz in DC or even Doom without sacrificing a whole lot of perks. If they offered the Majestic stats while in the look of something else - or even let us change the hue or something - would be both satisfying and make things a little more diverse out there. Who's sick of seeing 20 people in Maj Light + Draconic Bows?
Further - my Melee monster looked SO much better in Full Plate than in his Blue Wolf Heavy. Would love to be able to have the BW capability but the "look" of FP set. Or something. I know this would be a major server change, but this thread is spot on:
It's totally sad that everyone mostly looks exactly the same!
That see through kinda ICEY shield that everyone was crazy paying awesome prices for in prelude i used to farm the parts from wyverns in SOS! with my dwarf spoiling em!
I miss how mithril boots use to be D grade and matched perfectly with the mithril heavy set. Now they are C grade, look totally different, but the parts/rec still drop from D grade mobs.

Clannie of mine from a long time ago had Implosion boots and gloves for the longest time. I think think he never got rid of them either (warsmith). Afaik, was the only pair on our server.
does anyone else remember when they used to sell the dragon armors in the giran shop? i think they were b grade iirc; never had anywheres near enough money to buy them tho (i think the armor was like 5m or so when it was being sold). dang, that was awhile ago...
