Lineage II producer Tim "Ornery" Tan has taken a break out of his busy day to talk candidly about the future of Lineage II. Read on for a peek at what's in store for Lineage II!
As the Fall season begins, its a good time to look at the changes that have been going on for Lineage II, as well as what is in store for the coming months. First off, I look around and see a couple of different faces on the team. Omega and I have stepped up to new roles, but bring years of experience on the project to the table. Alyra and Twinmoon are two new additions to the team that have quickly become accustomed to their community and marketing roles, respectively. Its always a good feeling knowing that Spam is at his post leading the customer support team and helping to make the overall product better.
One of our current goals is to interact more with the player base and get some really good feedback on the game and services of Lineage II. I think Alyra has done an excellent job so far in talking with everyone on the message boards and forwarding key points to me and the rest of the team. Another goal of ours is to try to be more open and provide timely information to our players. Weve been using the monthly newsletter to give everyone a sneak peak at whats going on in the upcoming month. We are also trying to participate in an increased number of interviews and developer chats so that players can get those burning questions answered. Ive recently been able to meet up with a number of players at both the Penny Arcade Expo, and the NCsoft meet and greet here in Austin. I really enjoyed meeting players and listening to their feedback. I was truly amazed at the diversity of both the requests and the people.
So what is coming up for Lineage II? Well the obvious big news is the approaching update. Im really excited about whats coming in Lineage® II: The Chaotic Throne - The 1st Throne: The Kamael. We will be featuring a new race called the Kamael. Im sure Ill be creating at least one when the servers go live! Other things that Im looking forward to are the new hunting areas of Isle of Prayer and Hellbound, new items and item slots, and especially Fortress Battles. I really think Fortress Battles will solidify our status as the premier PvP MMO. Groups and small clans will be able to battle 24/7 for fortresses, and earn the right to use specific skills by claiming them. Im currently looking at launching the live update before the year ends. PTS will open up in a couple of months and well be sure to let everyone know as soon as we have a more concrete date.
Next on the list is Paid Services. Included in these services is the highly anticipated Character Server Transfer. I dont have a ton to say about these services yet, but I do want to let people know that there will of course be rules on when and where characters can transfer as well as restrictions on what items and how much Adena a character can transfer with. More details to come in the near future, but Im targeting the launch day of Chaotic Throne 1 as the same launch day for paid services.
Finally, we have at least three more major in game events planned for the rest of the year. I really think that everyone is going to enjoy the next one that is coming up. Weve got it slated for late October and its sure to push out some really cool head accessories into the world.
I really do appreciate people taking time out to visit our booth at PAX and those who came out to Austin. I'd also like to thank our dedicated official fan sites for playing such an integral role in the Lineage II Community. Right now Im seeing what I can and cant do from whats been asked. Please continue to write in constructive feedback on the boards. I want to ensure our community that we as a team are actively working to make Lineage II the best product it can be, and to continue to make it an enjoyable experience for all who take part in it.
Tim Ornery Tan, Lineage II North America Producer
Awesome, thanks Tim for taking your time to write this up :) It was a very interesting read and a good insight into the future.
Oh and welcome to Twinmoon :)
As for server transfers, hopefully the restrictions will be for things like boss mob jewelry and huge amounts of adena. Regular players should really be free to move around to servers to play and have fun with other friends. This would probably be the most profitable for NCSoft and the most fun for the players.
I think we are all looking forward to The 1st Throne: The Kameal. Very exciting stuff.
My personal favorite remark is:

yay more useless hair accessaries
there are people who actually play this game to not make their character look prissy and cute, maby give us a real pvp event for once, this is after all a pvp game
In regards to the transfers, I already dread the LACK of items and adena it seems we will be able to bring to a new server.
Sorry Alyra but your people have ALREADY got this wrong if there is going to be restrictions that limit a player on kain bringing something like a baium ring or their OWN adena to a server that has been around the same amount of time.
Especially if we are to pay for this service.
The only reason you implement something that limits what you can bring is to prevent the 'ebayers", but they all buy accounts stripped if you didnt know it geez. And thats pathetic putting in adena limits, people can just buy 20 drac bows and bring them over.
Way stupid ideas if they really do exhist from bartz to kain and so on, i just hope they only extend to newish servers like teon/franz

no info on PTS huh
ok please continue with the 20 page thread about server transfer problems
Here ya go...
Im currently looking at launching the live update before the year ends. PTS will open up in a couple of months and well be sure to let everyone know as soon as we have a more concrete date.
I'd say expect PTS in around November considering he would like to have CT1 live by the end of the year.

I coudnt agree more...
When i heard about Character Transfer, i thought "cool, i'll be able to go to Teon or Franz and take part in Sieges and everything during European times" !
But then, L2 producer comes in and it's like "remember which game you are playing ? It's Lineage II, where everything must be painful, so if you're gonna switch servers, you're gonna have to do everything all over again cos of course we wont let you take with you some pieces of furniture you've worked hard to get, otherwise it would just be... fun, and we dont want our players to have fun here, remember ?"
Besides, this is a blessing for all bot companies who will see thousands of new ppl buying adena & items from them on new servers...
Good job, once again.
Don't go all chicken little on it.
Alyra and now Onery, by way of Alyra, said you won't be nekkid, you transfer with gear. "restrictions" is unspecified, but doesn't necessarily mean it'll be unplayable.
Take a deep breath. If the restrictions for transfers don't appeal to you, you'll be no worse off than you are currently.

You obviously dont have boss jewllery so [censored]
Ok, no problem !
So, about server transfers... hmm, not thinking about anything right now, but i'll be sure to post more stuff about it just to bother you
Ok, biggest thing that people really want to know. Seeing is Bartz/Teon will be the hardest hit with Character transfers, what are these "restrictions" will people not be able to teleport to high populated servers as the rumor have suggested? Perhapes you could shine a little more light on this subject.

Sigh, not every event can appeal to everyone, and a lot of people do love hair accesories, so yay for us ^^.
If you don't get enoughy pvp, how abhout you siege some more or start a nice clan war.

obviously by looking at your chars your in the minority of who ncsoft should be pleasing, you have been pleased the past 100 events anyway

I would like to see some kind of pvp/battle tourney event as well, not that I don't like hair accesories but we've had so many carebear events and zero pvp ones of late.
The last event that had some pvp was when we had raid bosses with increased drops spawn all over the map, now that was fun ^^
Well if you meant me by dates, I meant month(s) had been given, thus me saying to search since they are on this very board :P
Although a exact day isnt very hard to predict if you go back and look at all the releases TBH :) You know its in November, that gives you 4 weeks to pick from, take a wild guess which.

This is the point I kept from this interview. Feedback. It's the way that players can tell the developing company how they view the game and what they would like to see in the future. Of course, having a large playerbase means that people view things from different perspective, but still common ground can always be found. I think that NC is already moving (slowly) on listening the playerbase requests eg. decrease in damage dealt, balancing of skill and classes (not always succesful, but they try), etc.
Personally, I think they need to be more proactive on getting feedback. In the suugestions forums, there are a tons of ideas. Some are good, some are not; but they show the general direction that playerbase wants the game to go.
The developer team might gather some ideas, propose alternatives for implementation and have them up for discussion and suggestions.

There is no chance that the American servers or idea will ever or HAVE ever had a influence on the game
Solely the game is what the koreans make for it, they will not ALTER it in any EXTREME way for the north american community.
The only thing your feedback will relate to is bots, events and small things like that, maby even siege times or poor service blah blah.
Nothign to do with how the game runs (apart from if there is a bug because of translation)
I just recently tried L2 at the *strong* suggestion of a friend who loves the game. I would like to say that its beautiful graphics and excellent theme music have me hooked, but unfortunately some of L2's inherent gameplay/UI constraints have caused me to cancel my subscription and stop playing. Here's why:
1. There is no way to reverse the y-axis mouse behavior. I am currently playing WoW, CoH, and Tabula Rasa beta, and each of those games allows me to invert my mouse movement. Consequently, in L2 I am repeatedly and frustratingly looking at the sky when I'm trying to look at the ground, and when I try to turn at the same time, I often get completely, if temporarily, disoriented. Maybe a young person has no trouble switching back and forth, but I'm pushing 60, and I spent 20 years flying helicopters, where moving the stick forward points you down, and vice versa. There's no way I am going to change my setup in those other games just to play L2.
2. I hate click-to-move, but I also hate having to use the keyboard to move and steer. I'm sure over time I could get used to click-to-move, but why should I have to? If moving the mouse or turning didn't disengage autorun, I could have at least part of what I want (which is the flexibility of WoW or CoH in setting up my controls). Not a deal-breaker, but a definite annoyance.
3. Finally, my Logitech G15 keyboard's macros are disabled in L2. Why? I use this keyboard for one reason only: I have peripheral neuropathy and I've lost most of the feeling in my fingertips. Because of this, I frequently lose contact with the home keys and end up pressing the wrong keys (also the reason I don't like using the keyboard to move). Again, not a deal-breaker, but it definitely affects my enjoyment of the game.
So, while many people may consider my complaints minor, to me, taken as a whole, they will keep me from playing L2 until they're resolved. Which is unfortunate, because otherwise I would have kept playing with my friend.
So we have to pay more money on top of the 15 Dollars we already pay? thats stupid
You don't have to pay anything, just stay on your server. This is an extra service, you can choose not to participate.
well ofcourse im gonna stay on bartz, but in my opinion we are already paying 15$ a month for "extra service's" and if they are making you pay for server transfer then thats just making your 15$ go to waste. If we werent paying 15$ a month for the "extra Service's" nc soft gives us. the game would be like guild wars and have a ton more players, but i didnt like guild wars ;P

You are paying 15$ a month for "Basic Service" if you want to "super size" that then the "extra cost" will be involved.

Server population? Some servers are suffering from lack of population, so people wanna move to servers with more people.
Also there are Euro players who would prefer not to re-roll to a Euro server.
In addtion, even if a server has an active population, I imagine that there are people who might be fed up with it and might like a change. Of course, there is always the "grass is always greener" effect so people who are moving for this reason might want to be a bit open minded about it.
Well, if you look at the server economies, I do understand why many people would wanna move. Thanks to some of the other topics, I've been looking at Devianne and Erica economies... which are outright horrible. People get frustrated when they cant get even normal gear...
On the servers where a shield costs 200m adena, the average adena per person is also way higher than on servers where that same shield costs 70m.
It's not like the people on Erica are all walking around with only 50m in their pocket and nobody is able to get S grade. People still buy their S grade at lv76.01% just as every other server. If you look at the "price" of adena VS item costs on such servers you will see that everything actually makes sense.
What gear can't be moved? Just Epics or is there going to be a list? Hmm, darn can't take my plated leather boots, but the top and bottom are ok. We will have to wait and see, maybe it might be fun to see new toons.
And, are one or two of the servers going to end up ghost towns?

Best wishes for continued success with L2.
I couldn't agree more,
Although i'm getting used to the clicking i still miss click loads especially in laggy towns, it is frustrating but i will eventually get used to it.
My biggest problem is a 40" screen and the game supporting my native resolution of 1920 x 1080 i cannot change either the scale of the windows or make the text bigger so i can't read the Text.
I have it on 720 now but of course Im not sitting right behind the screen or i would have to go for glasses after a month, and still have problems reading the Text.
I won't cancel my account, but it is highly annoying.
Yeah, I have the same problem with my Mitsubishi WD-73732. I wish NCSoft made the game playable on 73" LCDs, I may need to get one of those small 23" screens to play L2.
See, this is annoying. You've got the producer saying things to the community, but there's absolutely nothing new in there. He's telling us nothing we didn't already know because its already been translated from the Korean by other players. Nothing added to the game is really going to help it when almost the entire Varka Silenos (as an example) area on Lionna is being botted. Much of the Ketras too. And then there's code problems. Firefox still doesn't work with Lineage. There's been no comment on that.
So go ahead, add more widgets, but don't fix the problems we already have.
One of our current goals is to interact more with the player base and get some really good feedback on the game and services of Lineage II.
so the question is will there ever be any 24/7 live gm support ? Or is NC keeping up the copy and paste standart answers InGame ?
Another goal of ours is to try to be more open and provide timely information to our players.
official website is still not up to date with c5 weapon infos
We are also trying to participate in an increased number of interviews and developer chats so that players can get those burning questions answered.
my most burning question is: will there ever be a live GM who will active run around in Game on a Character and ban bots
Next on the list is Paid Services.
isnt NC soft already earing enung money with all the farmer and bot accounts that never getting banned ?
sorry that i keep talking about bots bots and bots, but i am playing linage since 2.5 Years now there have ever been bots and alot of bots, me as a player cant go into any Necro ot Catacomb these days cos all and i realy mean all rooms there are taken by bot trains and its not going to be better. The problem is not that there are bot the problem is its the same bots over weeks or month even if u have wrote 5 and more petitons about them.
So my oppinion is NC soft should work way harder to get the server free of bots then on anything else. Fox the problems u allready have before u start working on other stuff.
Still NC Soft has the best MMORPG Game but the most worse support
One thing about people saying this webisite is not up to date; it's one of the same reasons why their is no prima guide! Hell, even the Korean L2 site takes 3-4 months to be updated every chronicle. It's because not only do chronicle updates require changes to the site's database, every small patch that gets released every couple weeks might completely change the database yet again. Basically you'll be busy adding/changing stuff every day... I don't think that's in anyone's website budget lol. Not even the Korean one :p
My tought is they just update all sites at once, at a time where they think everything will be stable for a while to come.
there shouldnt be restrictions for changing servers, pay the money take all your gear, warehouses, and money with you. unless you have no gear, are lvl 1 and have 5 billion adena, then you should be banned i think.
See, this is annoying. You've got the producer saying things to the community, but there's absolutely nothing new in there. He's telling us nothing we didn't already know because its already been translated from the Korean by other players.
What would you like them to tell us? Aside from stuff relating to the bots and other technical issues which is not what this thread or the announcement was about.
We already know what we were told because the majority of the L2 community like to know what they have to look forward to in advance, so much so that people go out of their way to get info from the Korean PTS.
If we are to look ahead, maybe a few things to consider would be to make quests for items, recipes, jewelry, etc available PRIOR to reaching that grade. Also to increase drop rates, especially for "hard to get items" such as A grade recipes and parts. This will probably cut down on the botting seeing that the only ones able to grind enough to farm these things are the bots. L2 needs to make the game "unprofitable" for bots.
I have played many MMORPG's and I must say, this game has the worst economy of any I've seen. Flame me if you like, but it would only be because you probably have bot accounts and hate the thought of not making any more cash on your adena selling for real money.
Because you can;t go out and make enough adena with normal killing just to keep yourself in potions and shots, my friends and I have greatly reduced the amount of time we spend in L2.
Say whatever you like, but that it the reality of it. I have seen alot of people reduce or all together stop playing the game because of the economy. L2 devs need to find a way to fix this or it is destined to fade away until they will have to offer free-play just to get people into the game.

About shots and potions -- you really don't have to use GHP GSAP etc or even soul shots if you can't afford it. I think that's the misperception that a lot of people have -- that you need to use potions/shots/scrolls.
I've done a pick-up group and been criticized for not using GSAP, even tho we were keepin the room clear, and have been accused of botting just cuz I wasn't using shots.
I think the economy issue is an illusion. If the economy were hard, but the gameplay was fun and encouraged teamwork and relationships, then you'd not notice the economy was hard.
Think back to original Everquest -- economy was tough, you had to stay up for days on end to get a rare spawn to finish a quest, and the grind was at least as exquisite as lin2. But the gameplay mechanics were such that you had to have a party, you had to have a guild (aka clan), so naturally enough the grind/economy was just a backdrop to hanging out with friends.
In contrast, chronicle after chronicle, they've made lineage2 a game where coordination, teamwork, etc. are really not valued. Who cares if you can play your class when a **** bot can do it just fine? The result is a game where the grind (for xp or wealth) stands out as the main feature, precisely because there's not much else to it.
I agree, we have also spent time in the catacombs and not used shots, yet it is getting harder to form parties because there seems to have been a drop off in players and I think it is realted to the bot attendance and the crappy economy.
I do appreciate your optimistic viewpoint, although I still hold to my original assessment of the game.
I do however feel that it is the best game out there for graphics and gameplay (yet I don't consider sitting in the marketplace in a trade stand trying to make money to buy my next piece of armor/weapon as gameplay)
..then your just plain desensitized to crappy gameplay, with a comment like that. The game does have its problems, Im glad after how long this game has been out they still update it with something very similiar to content.
If they needed to fix only 1 thing on this game, I would scale the exp so that everyone was withing the same range for pvp/pve with only 1 month of grind... that would fix and counteract nearly everything else people QQ about.
As far as I'm concerned, I'm used to play without SS and almost no HP potions (I just sit in order to get HP back, use pots in rare dangerous situations and I only use SS against stunning mobs). Of course it takes more time but I have A LOT of money without playing the market. My WS is crafting for 10a in Giran so my money doesn't come from there (and need I say I don't ebay either?).
I xp where I have a chance to drop the piece of equipment I need or the recipe and parts to craft it => I'm self sufficient.
I don't know what it'll be when all my characters reach B grade but till now, I have a lot of fun playing this way. I have no deadline for reaching any goal.
The game is just what the people make it ...
umm yeah that might work for c grade ... but come B/A/S grade where key mats/recs are spoil or only available through quests and you need crazy mats to craft anything you will need to change your gamestyle ... unless of course you hope to do the TOI quest killing mobs in 9th/10th with no ss :)
Ya I started leveling my cleric and it is starting to become fun as in I have no requirements as to how much I should level it, I just hope there is a huge influx of people making kamaels/new characters so I can party and stay that way so I do not have to go at certain paces to not fall behind.
The economy is pretty rough but I sat in Giran for just a couple of weeks and have made TONS of adena so I can buy myself top A-grade, it just takes patience and good thing about it is you can go afk legally and hopefully come to see some progress...
My policy is to reinvest 50% of what I have on other stuff to resale. Must make a decent profit per item which usually 30-50% more of prchase price. When eveerything is sold I start over and have more money to invest. When I sell this load ill have 91mil for 3 weeks work. Not bad really and not even lvl 40 yet on this toon.
Someone mentioned it earlier but there are actually 3 parts to this game PVE, PVP and the econemy. Doing the first and third well will get you into the position to do the second well. Thats the only way I know how to do it without outside assistance. Ofcourse get into a clan so you dont have to do it all on your own is important too.
Just thought I would post here instead of making a new thread. Since the server transfers went live seems like the game is slowly slipping away. Maybe not on the Euro or Bartz servers, but if you refuse to pay 50 bucks to transfer it's getting pretty bleak. Maybe it's just me and maybe it's just because spring/summer is here. It just doesn't feel the same anymore on my servver anyway. It's almost like "whats the point anymore".
The only server I've seen heavy for the past half a month is Teon, Luna and Franz are Normal at most. All others are light.
I guess it's not that unusual since many people transfered off the american servers and luna just opened and took a chunk out of Franz and the other servers. Teon members seem to be more dedicated. I wonder how is Teon different from Franz as many say it's alot better then Franz. I just don't see it. And I doubt it's the case of less souless.
It's been almost three weeks now since you launch your new batch update. This new updates devasted me and unmotivate me from playing the game. For the past two years since I've started the game, I have spend thousands upon thousands of hours playing. I current have three accounts, which mean I'm really dedicated to play lineage. My love for the game is hunting for spellbooks and selling spellbooks. I was the queen of spellbooks. I've collected over 3000+ spellbooks some i've purchased over 4-5 million dollars for each. NOW since your update, you include all the high level spellbooks at NPC stores. This is an unfair practice. I know you want players to have all the book but it's unfair for those whom have spend countless hours playing lineage to find the fun in hunting for drop items. You might as well sell all the B,A,S grade weapons and armor for cheap at NPC stores...I've sent numerous message to management with unsuccess. My fair solution is to reimburse me for the spellbooks i've gotten or take it out of NPC stores and make it like it was before. If you keep doing this, you willl eliminate alot of players from your game. They have to have a motive to play. Buying and selling is one of the strongest motive in the game also. STOP making unfair game practice and fix what is fair for those whom spend hours on the game. I lost over 5 billion adena on spellbook from you doing this.
Fundamentally changing how a mmorpg plays out down the road seems like a bad idea to me. Many fans of the game will find the fundamental change horrible and leave; new players will be discouraged by the comunity to start playing a game that's gone to hell (for them at least).
And if the mmorpg is old enough there will be no new players to speak of; and for L2, there are no new players to speak of on a significant scale. Kamael brought very few from what i could see in the range 1-62 lvls. L2 is already very old with little to NO comercialization in NA and Europe (if you know this to be different tell me :/ ) so I don't see any light in its future.
L2's future is probably BOOMING only in Koreea and related asian ventures, from what I can see. NA and Europe? No.
So... Looking ahead to see... nothing clear, all blurry, but I have a bad felling about this. (to keep it esotheric)
Quoting myself from a different thread that was a bit diverted towards "looking ahead" topic.
