L2 engine ever going to be updated?

Just wondering, will the L2 main engine ever be updated or is all that going to be saved for L3?

Pretty much any new cpu manufactured today is multicore and as far as I can tell the L2 engine is still single-threaded...Will L2 players ever be able to fully realize and utilize their current CPU potential with L2?

Or are we forever doomed to running single-threaded applications on our multi-core processors?
I'll be totally honest with you, Aleena--I have no idea what you just said. :) But I'll see if I can find out.
In c5 I believe L2 was upgraded to run 30% faster with dual core procecessors
Ok, I asked. :) We don't have any plans to upgrade at this time.
What about being able to use DX10 ?

haven't you taken classes in computers?

what he was asking is basic Computer A+ knowledge.

even tho its above your grade, shouldn't you at lest know what he meant?
no...

The unreal 2.x engine currently in use cannot be updated much at all aside from mods and additional stuff that is currently supported already..

DX10 will not happen... as they'd have to do a whole lot of redevelopment...

as it stands, we'll likely get the occasional graphics filters and effects added as it's a directX 8.1/9.0 engine..... which supports pixel shaders and the like...

Epic still "supports" it's older engines... but things are going to dry up more quickly as time progresses..

Well, they already multibox.

Tsk tsk, do you know how dumb that sounds?

"Even if you don't know what it means, shouldn't you still know what it means!!?!"

Maybe I'm some kind of genius but I think when someone says they don't know what something means, they meant it literally.
That, and to admit it and go off to find out is better that someone who thinks they know something.
No reason to rake on Alyra. She's not here as a computer tech.

To be frank, it is NOT basic computer A+ knowledge. I have worked in the field for a long time and I can assure you this is NOT so basic and most people who work with computers all day would NOT know what you are talking about.
Haha, it's ok. :) No, I have never taken a computer class. I can build a basic computer from scratch, but when it comes to the higher-end things and networking, I'm not afraid to say that my knowledge is meager.
unless you have taking courses on operating systems/general computer engineering

your basic IT guy isnt even gonig to know what that means
Knowing anything about an engine at all let alone it's versions and how it works.. along with how TIDE DOWN it is to the game it's running... theres ALOT of information and specific technical information one must be thoroughly familare with before even making a statement about it...

the comment made.... and i must say this...... is as stupid as walking up to someone digging a hole with a shovel and then calling them a ****** for not knowing anything about a massive mining operation, all the geological information related to it, and the dollars required/spent and personel related to it.... All they were doing was Digging a hole..... why would they NEED to know something like that to do thier job.. while it may spark an interest.. it's something that isn't required..

I'd be pretty hard pressed to expect even SPAM or Ornery know specific details other then.... "it uses the unreal 2 engine" and that it runs on "DirectX9.0c"....
dude, Alyra did a perfect job as CM.

Most people I've worked with who know computers would be $#%^-poor CMs -- it's a different skill-set, different apptitudes.

I much prefer someone who does their job and gets the answers, rather than someone who makes stuff up, or ignores things they don't know.

Being CompTIA A+ certified (or knowledgeable as you put it) is not that impressive. Let alone give you the right to insult our Community Manager. Continue studying and taking test, spend less time trying to demean others.

Amen to that!
More generally, since almost all of my problems in game are connection-related (losing connection, going a few seconds without update from server, etc.), would it help at all to upgrade the engine client-side?
No.... there are issues with the way the engine has been modified.... some optimisations and some settings changed in a manner that have caused issue..

while yes... some serious improvements would come if it were updated to unreal 3.0's engine.... it's not viable... course anything learnt from it.. can usually be edited and added to an older engine in a rather poorer form....

the current engine without the massive mods in place currently works quite well....
LOL, just took a look at those compTIA A+ and other stuff... thats something hightech eh? Heck, with the compTIA A+, I'd be amazed if the guy even knew what an unreal 2 engine is.

"CompTIA A+ confirms a technician's ability to perform tasks such as installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventive maintenance and basic networking. The exams also cover domains such as security, safety and environmental issues and communication and professionalism." -EVEN if Alyra had that course under her belt(which she doesnt) it would be perfectly normal for her not to know the answer to the question, or even what it was really about. GG Matsumoto, you think that is some hot [censored] eh?
Actually someone very much fluent in C+ and visual basic and python and a number of other high end coding... wouldn't have a clue about an engine....
Lets be specific here. The A+ doesn't confirm anything other than you can take and pass their test. Personally, give me someone with field experience over a college kid with a bunch of tests under their belt. The test does not demonstrate taking a problem that isn't normal and how to troubleshoot and fix the problem.

The only tests out there that have any real street cred is the Cisco high end ones. Those are the ones that most people fail the first few times. 8 hours, a few routers, make them do this.....

Sorry, I have a bunch of these certificates. They only got me thru the HR process. It was because I built my first computer from scratch, wrote the op system in asm code and worked my way up from there. I find the current group coming out of college less than qualified, especially when they start waving around the MS certificates.

jmho - ymmv
ATM, i run a business.. building/repairing/upgrading and tuning computers..

i simply walked in.. paid for the final 2 exams for A+... basically joined the class and passed it in under 30 minutes...

It's not difficult to write a test... hell i didn't study for it.. but it's a requirement to do work on computers to have a+ certifications....

Could i pass a MS certification tests? Quite likely, could i get certified in a number of other things... yes likely...

Does someone that goes to school for 4-5 years... write the exams... may even pass with flying colors top of the class results..... but does some of the worst work known in the industry.... Becoming more common unfortuneatly...

I'd rather take someone with self taught knowledge (with concern for bad habits)...... then someone that has good marks....

It's really terrible that you can't put in a resume that you've got so many years of on hand, on the job, even self volunteered work in great detail and alot of business usually ignoreing it completely.. specially when you can't reference anything but yourself... which is highly annoying..

even more annoying when you know someone specifically that knows very little about his own job, doesn't do very well, produces poor quality results.... and they got the job because they've got a full wack of certificates.. meanwhile your stuck unable to PAY to get those certs... but are likely several times more qualified then they are.....

once again

The rich get richer... the poor stay poorer
Yep we've had some people at my job dumber than socks but with a bunch of fancy certs. I have a few myself but I like to think of myself more on the dumb as toast level, a touch higher than socks XD

I'll be totally honest with you, Aleena-- I have no idea what you just said. :) But I'll see if I can find out.

LOL!!!!!

eh hem sorry about that...

Depends on where you are applying. Blockbuster, Best Buy, or any other place that has you go fill out a webform will kick your app to the curb, Any position that I've applied for, I've had phone calls, interviews and tests given by the company to see if I meet *their* standards - not some third party's point system.

Don't get annoyed. Don't get frustrated. If you don't have certs and degrees, you have a bit of extra work to do to get the job, but it pays off. Don't email/mail your resume - walk in with it and ask if they have time for an interview. Let them meet you and let your knowledge during the interview (many tech positions will have you interview or test with several people ) they'll see that you know your stuff.

Sorry for the sidetrack. Just wanted to toss that out there.
You can't in alot of places.. they don't take resumes or interviews unless you complete thier own system.. which usually nowadays.. requires you pass thier online system tests..

"Would you report a fellow employee to management if you caught them stealing $1?"

followed by the repeat question for larger amounts in variable.... of course saying i'd report it reguardless of how much taken....

Some of these can easily gotten through using LIES.. and knowing how to play the "answer things correctly and not honestly" methods...

lol so basically everything i can teach you in 5 minuets?
BTW i have never studied computers ><

Jesus you are all taking what I meant a little too harsh and somewhat out of context.

In no way was I trying to demean her. It may of come off that way but wasn't so much my intent. Its too bad that tone of voice can't be portrayed over the internet, or else then you would of known that wasn't how I was making my statement/questions.

I'm not saying she was wrong to seek out a higher chain on the subject that she don't know about (out side her grade comment).

I'm just saying as a site manager, you'd think *no offense* they'd know and had a few classes in how computers work....is all I meant. Threading isn't really a super hard concept. :)

So worthier or not she knows if they would be up grading isn't what I was (basically) coming down on her about, it was her comment that she didn't know what it was. ("I have no idea what you just said." -alrya)

w/e you all go on thinking me as nothing but a "tool", and hating me.
try adding a :P to your posts
about as close as you can get to a playful tone over the internet

I wish L2 wasnt such a memory hog.
And didnt have GG.
On the topic of the engine, wouldn't a newer engine just up the base reqs and put a heavier load on the GPU during sieges?

I had everything turned up during that last siege and I was still able to FRAPS the battle without getting choppy graphics. With a newer engine, we could have really bumpy triple-textured shadowed plastic-looking armor... and hats

Would there be performance benefits to a newer engine? And if there is wouldn't that end up negated by the clamouring of fans insisting that NCoft push the graphical limits of the new engine?
Wow, I didn't know that my question was going to cause so much drama (ouch!), appologies for that!

Alyra- thanks for asking and finding out so quickly!

As far as a new engine and upping the base requirements, that wasn't so much my hope, my hope was more along the lines of that possibly the old code would be optimized and recompiled to make use of multiple cpu's/multiple cores so that it would be a true multi-threaded application. So, not en entirely new engine just updated for the current CPUs on the market today, same textures and graphic elements.

i.e. right now, if you have like 2+ cpus/2+ cores, L2 primarily kinda only utilizes one of them. So, if you currently are using a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz and you "upgrade" to dual core cpu operating at 2.4ghz your application may actually run slower because it's single threaded and essentially only executing on one of the 2+ cores.

So, by optimizing the code so that it can take advantage of multiple cores ("talk to all the cpu's") then it would kinda like be running your application at (ghz speed) x (core speed), with some allowance for diminishing returns and bottlenecks in other parts of your architecture. (so on a quad core system it'd be like running L2 at say like 8ghz)

So then, once you're running like some quadcore machine with with multicore compiled code, hopefully your bottleneck will be something like graphics which is somewhat independent of the engine and you can just keep throwing money at like dual 768MB SLI systems.
Windows Vista more easily and better manages the multithreading capabilities of various programs..

while windows XP will handle it.... just not nearly as well..... all the processes running in the background are moved over to help balance it all out on the multi core cpu's....

The problem is that the unreal 2 engine being used has a few "issues" with timing requirements that true dual+ core cpu's presents.... a whole lot of extra code needs to be in place to fix these issues.... from what i can tell, lineage2 is set to only use ONE core baised on what windows thinks and where it thinks it should be placed when its ran...

ATM, there should be no expecting any bonuses or recoding for true multi core support.....

Of course using a newer engine would have it's major benifits.. while there would be a drop in support for a number of machines... (requiring slightly more juice).. there would be a performance boost for quite a serious number of other more recent machines that meet the requirements of say unreal 3 engine.... so long as the engine is optimised for the MMO being modified with it.
Once Again, this was in the C5 patchnotes

New Technologies Implemented
Support for Dual-core processors
The clients now support dual-core CPUs. Those that take advantage of this feature will see a 30% increase in speed.
imo it's slightly misleading....

as previously.... there was a serious decrease when going from a single to a dual core cpu...... "support" is different then "taking advantage of"....
I wish it would be possible to at least set affinity of process to run at CPU (core) you wish to. That way you could run 2 clients, each on it's own CPU (core).
But I can't even see that process, and wonder if it actually "survives" setting to other CPU.
Crawlerin... it still works..

Open the lineage2 shortcut (where it shows the update screen.

bring up the taskmanager and set affinity on that process..

volla.. hit start.. all proceeding programs launched from lineageII update screen via the start button will be forced onto the CPU core of choice...

It's basically the mother/daughter system... the mother program being lineageII..... the daughter programs are gameguard/l2/etc.
Ohhhh I did not know that, thank you very many, will try that. :) Haven't thought of it this way. I cannot see L2.exe process itself because of GG and cannot set affinity to task, so I thought it's impossible.

BTW is there any good process manager that is able bypass GG and reveal everything? Sysinternals cannot see gameguarded processes foo.
Process Watch does I believe still. I havent tested it since I put Vista on, but it always use too.. (get errors now with it on vista, bah heh)

There was always Process Guard too. I remember GG actually blocked it for awhile back when because you could shut down GG completely and L2 would still run. Not sure if its unblocked or not.
