Name Change Concern

General Discussion Started Last reply 53 posts
With the announcement of the forthcoming name changing service, a lot of concern has been raised among the players about how it can be used in illegitimate ways.

For instance a player named "cdhdfdff91" uses unmentionable programs to reach maximum level and then becomes a player named "Bob" that appears on unmentionable sites for sale.

Also, let's say "George" just scammed his clan/guild out of millions of adena in gear and then disappeared only to become "Fred" ... completely untraceable and beyond recourse.

Please, all of the legitimate players of L2 would love to know that there will be a way to look up what peoples former names have been. That is the only way I can see that this particular service won't be abused to the extreme.

(Any resemblance of names I used to real names is a complete accident.)
I pretty much think "it is what it is".

They have this in Korea and have said that they will make effort to minimize improper use.

However, any system that has more freedom also has the greatest chance to be exploited.

It's not like people don't buy accounts now. I do agree that there should be a way to see "who was who', but in the end, I feel that you can't obsess about this stuff because it's just going to make you go nuts.

It's not like players would cease breaking the EULA if they didn't implement this.

And if they are going to have sex changes then it only seems logical that they will allow for a name change.

I say just don't fret it. It's not worth it in the long run.

Actually, they did confirm Name Changes. I quote:

The Kamael update also brings the implementation of three new account which will be available to players. The services are Character Server Transfer, Name Change, and Gender Change.

Name changes will only be allowed if switching from server to server .
They should include an ability for anyone to look up previous names the player owned so that everyone is always aware of who everyone else is.

Name changes will only be allowed if switching from server to server .

how come?

Name changes will only be allowed if switching from server to server .

how come?

bc when you change servers you will need to change names if the name is all rdy in use on the other server and thats probley the most likely thing they would do.
so it is just your rough guess, correct?

ITS SMOOTH!
on korean server (which just goes ahead of NA servers) it works on the same server, not transfer. do you see any reason for it to be implemented differently from proven method?

yes i do.

like different events in korean servers.

also the fact the the language isent the same and more characters for korean serves like they can have a heart over there head and we cant and there are more servers there also.

Name changes will only be allowed if switching from server to server .

I've seen nothing from NCSoft to corroborate that. Rumor?
what would stop you from transferring with changing a name and then retransferring back? makes no sense to limit this way
These new services are also gonna be charged if you want them :p
I'm excited about this particular service.

Lookout Kain! I've got dibbs on airehfg AND iasegfef!

on WoW you can only transfer once every 6 months or something and that cost money also.

Which would be a great observation...

If this was WoW.

This is Lineage 2. Thank you, drive through.

Every MMORPG takes stuff from other companys have you 0% faith and all rdy are crying about something that have never happened yet? its not gonna be free its called PAID services. for a reason you know?
I know just what is going to happen, and I don't like it.

No, I don't have faith that the people that abuse the EULA (that poor EULA is going to have so many issues. So many people molest it) won't do so with this feature as well.

I mean, one day we'll see 100101100011101 running around, and then we'll see "Sunburnt******" that looks strangely the same the next.

You want faith? Go to church. I only believe in the lowest common denominator, and that is "Screw earning it, I'll just pay for it instead."

After all, most of the people I'm concerned about are those MMO players that "rent to pwn."
So the general consensus is that nobody cares?

I'm not worried about being scammed, as nothing of mine is ever given to anyone if it would break my heart to lose it forever.

What bothers me is the ability to erase years of well-earned bad reputation with a few dollars and a couple mouse clicks. There are plenty of players I avoid all contact with simply because they have never been associated with anything good. They have earned their infamy and I don't think they should be allowed to escape it. If you're a well known griefer/scammer/troublemaker, etc I think you should have to live with the consequences of that... not buy your way out of it.

As for using unmentionable programs to reach level 80 as "chffdfddss" and then being sold as "PlayerX" ... I don't care how many people have done it and gotten away with it, I still will never agree with it. Pointing to existing bad behavior is no justification for more bad behavior. Everyone who buys adena/items/accounts I hope they are found and banned.

cry more?
Translation from the Korean patchnotes and services shows that once you have move a char to another account you can't move it back to the other server again.

And as far as I did understand the namechange thing in Korea you will be allowed to change the name only once every 6 months.

Identity in L2 has always been fluid.

I have 3 accounts, which means I can be several different toons at once. I'm not unique in that regard.

I can join multiple clans, even rival clans, and be both in the castle defending, and outside attacking in the same siege. I can be the scammer in the stairway selling soul shots as A Crystals, and the anonymous benefactor handing out weapons, armor, adena and buffs to lowbies for free; maybe I'm that price breaker that sold a +13 BOP for only a quarter of market value, and that price gouger who sells animal bones for 7.5K adena each in a shortage. Maybe I PK'ed you a few chronicles ago on a much higher level toon than yours, and helped you exact revenge against all of your greatest enemies in the same afternoon.

Would you know the difference if you stood next to me and my many alts?

Would I know you and yours?

KOS lists are for characters, not for the players behind them. In a game that is several years old, it is empty assurance that you are protected and safe from dealing with that player ever again. It is already possible for them to re-emerge in a new guise, with the same old tricks.

Papa's got a brand new bag? Doubt it. Name changes aren't new. It's the same old thing, whether you want to believe it or not. The only difference is that it will costs a bit more money and take a fixed amount of time for these shady ******** to reinvent themselves.

Forgive me, but I don't have any solution for your concerns. Name changes are coming. It is what it is.

All this talk of identities makes me want to put on the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil", fire up a Montecristo No. 2, and watch the fallout.

cry more?

Buy more?

buy more what?
Maybe there should be a thing like castle control on the site to see who changed there name to what for every server just to make cry babies like olorane happy
The notion of a system that allows a name change is absolutely ******ed. All MMORPGS focus on the concept of "accountability". In a game where it takes time to develop your character, a game that promotes the dynamic of risk:reward - electing a name change forces the divorce between the game and its inherent, immersive, nature.

All of you saying otherwise are wrong. Period.

In summation: there is no plausible justification for the implementation of this system. Unless NCSoft is benefiting from the selling of accounts, the purchasing of adena, and all other services that are generally complimented to this ridiculous, perpetual, Korean, grind.

buy more what?

You already know the answer to that. And learn to freaking spell already.

[Edit to add: No more dealing with you. I'm done with you, Artie. /block works here too.]

I laughed real good on this one - still laughing, actually. Thanks Manic.
Lineage 2 != WoW

hi a nother dumb person you dont under stand examples?
Examples are one thing... that was more of a metaphor. "Hey, WoW did this [ blah blah ] and since L2 is just like it and has no ideas of their own for how to do things they are/should/will do it the same way" more or less.

There's no room for anyone to say how anything is going to happen (I don't care how WoW does it or any other mmo for that matter). Until its released in NA no one (apart from NCSoft) knows -- end of story.

I'd have said something after the first time you did it on page 2 but GG likes to block me from signing in to accounts with IE.

Just because something is in quotes doesn't make it a direct quote. For instance: that was an impersonation. Now who is the "a nother" dumb one?

But for the sake of some fun, here you go:

WoW comparison #1.

Aw, snap. Here's another one x.X

It would be nice if this board had a filter that would automatically delete posts which contain the word WoW with reference to the mmo.

Zing.
so much qq... i want to change my very very very and again very ugly toon's name. i tried to get cool nick long ago but now it just brings me into frustration. i'm not a scammer, i'm not a botter, i'm just another nuker from a side spot. i'm just a few levels to become noble so i wont to reroll. so i would like to change that thing at my name to something more traditional and euphonic.

and i DON'T care on your point. i'll just rename my toon for some $ if this is real. kthx.

If your name is that terrible, chances are it was purchased. Thanks for playing, though.

Let's respect each others concerns, everyone, even if you don't agree. Yes the name-change service is coming soon, along with gender change and character server transfer. I wanted to touch on what was said in the quote above. We do plan to implement a system that will allow the community to see what a player's name was, and what it was changed to. I don't have the details yet on exactly how this will work, but we do believe it's very important to have this kind of system in place to help prevent possible name-change exploits.

As soon as I have more details (how the services will work, how much they cost, etc.), I'll be making a news announcement about the upcoming account services. :)

We do plan to implement a system that will allow the community to see what a player's name was, and what it was changed to.

That should pretty much quiet all of the naysayers, I think.

Aside from that, some people still find anonymity a valuable thing. I can see people going through some complex constructions to get around the name change "restrictions" already :)

That's very encouraging to hear! I actually hadn't seen you mention this until I saw someone else mention that you had.. mentioned.. it.. in another thread.

Name change would be perfectly harmless if you could easily look up a player's previous names. It would benefit those who would want a new name they were more happy with, while not allowing you to clear your reputation at will.
Cool that was my comment :p

I want a cookie!
i think if someone will change name ncsoft must post the player name in the board like.

Yjkhfdkdf ---- > bob

I think the name change is necesary for if someone with name 'Tim' want go to another server that have a 'Tim' , well 2 chars with same name in same server dont work.
For a comparison to another MMORPG...
On Ultima Online, server transfers allowed a certain amount of duping. That's an euphemism yes.
