Hot or Not: Name Changes

Lineage 2 is a seasoned game, having been around for nearly four years, counting closed beta. Six expansions have come and gone, and never have we seen an update as controversial as CT1's name changes. In a game where reputation is another form of currency, where a player can become both famous and infamous, their name can mean a great deal.

This week, we ask you about the name changes. Do you think they are a good idea? A bad idea? Do you think that you will change your name? If so, why? Vote in our poll (http://l2vault.ign.com/?dir=sympoll&dispid=54)!
i dont like my name, but its the only name people know me by. its the only one people trust me by. my good rep would be lost in a name change, anything bad i did would still cause distrust. you simply cannot sit around with a new name, friendless. sooner or later if you were a good person you would reveal your old name. kind of making the change useless.

old friends on vent would think youre a reroll, so i doubt anything could come from someone who "doesnt like their name" to change it.

on the other hand someone who has maniacally scammed, botted or cheated to get to the top could simply change his name and forever loose his old tags, however a brand new never-been-seen before lvl 79 hero also arouses suspicion, and when people compare screenshots, youre done for.

so name changes however nice it may be would be pointless.
When I made my character I took the name from a book but didn't realize at the time that people would take "AmberDrake" as a girls name (ie: Ms Amber Drake) instead of as a way of saying a golden dragon.

If I did change my name, which I think people should be able to do once, I'd let everyone I know, KNOW who I had been so my history would follow anyway.
Offtopic: Amber = golden?! Who's the author behind this?!
I don't have a rep, so no big change for me, other than I won't have a stupid name. Or not as stupid.

Offtopic: Amber = golden?! Who's the author behind this?!

Mercedes Lackey. And btw, yes, or yellow.

Main Entry: 1am·ber
Pronunciation: \ˈam-bər\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English ambre, from Anglo-French, from Medieval Latin ambra, from Arabic ʽanbar ambergris
Date: 14th century
1 : a hard yellowish to brownish translucent fossil resin that takes a fine polish and is used chiefly in making ornamental objects (as beads)
2 : a variable color averaging a dark orange yellow
Yellow in hue, but going as far as stating golden... Stretching it a bit too far there, harr!
/on-topic
who cares?
In real life people change their names all of the time. Not just actors, writers, politicians, or musical artists, but average Janes and Joes. Self-determination is fairly high on the list of freedoms that ordinary folks insist upon. Be who you want to be. Be who you were meant to be.

Name changes = much ado about nothing. I'm surprised that this discussion continues even after Alyra has confirmed that players will be able to track former names. Consider it a background check for L2. Is everyone really that concerned about performing their due diligence with updating KOS lists and clan membership/friendship screening?
Hm oh I dunno, other book I have referred to amber as "gold-hued".

Anyway that's neither here nor there, I either need a name change or a sex change to straighten it all out XD
Reminds me of the serial killer with quite a remarkable name, who changed it to something plain like "Steve Smith" - His name change was then announced on the news XD
I don't recall exactly what he changed his name to, so I guess his cunning plan worked :p

Artistic freedom I say :P 0 of the amber I've seen so far I'd call golden. And I've seen plenty of both substances.
amber is amber. gold is gold. you need a glasses if you cannot see any difference.
Back on topic folks. Take the color debate to off-topic if you really feel the need to continue it.
You're no fun Alyra :/

Okies, Imo, name changes... dont really care. There's already several ways to get rid of your bad reputation, and with server changes, there'll be yet another one. All the "toon xxgfgd turns to Fred" stuff doesnt matter either, since there's already many "normally" named toons that are being leveled for just that reason...

Personally, I'd never change my characters name or sex. Goes for all characters. If you cant think beforehand... well, that is your problem ^^

PS. If I did change my name, perhaps then people would stop thinking that I'm French O.o JE NE PARLE PAS FRANCAIS!!
There's some characters on my server that are pretty well known, even "heroic" and are on their 3rd owner. :o There are some others that are known scammers, known drama queens, etc.

On the one hand, being able to change names is necessary if you're changing sex, and handy for those people who legitimately (?) came into possession of a character with an undesirable name (who knows, maybe it was a typo).

I consider it a fairly high probability that CT1 is where lineage2 jumps the shark, ruining the community for all but the hardcore $#%^&s. I hope I'm wrong.
I think that many people have legitimate reasons for wanting to change their character's name, but unfortunately the scope for abuse outweighs the gains of implementing this function. As seridove said "reputation is another form of currency" this currency would face serious devaluation.
That currency has lost most of its value thanks to rampant account selling.

The only way to legitimately come into possession of a character is to make it yourself.
Didnt the EULA allow sharing in family? ;)
Sort of, you are allowed to use accounts of spouces and close family. Who then later could have stopped playing.

So theoretically it is possible to use an account other than your own legitimatly.

<taps chin> well don't make a char when the cat is walking on the keyboard! :)
I like my name.

lol. I think I've seen a few of those around.

Yea, my good 'ol memory still has something right :P
Maybe they should implement it with some sort of level cap. If you liked your name well enough to level it up to the second class change, after that you are stuck with it.

Yeah but that would be unfair to those who leveled up past that prior to the implementation of the name change.
What I'm trying to say here is that the time taken to get to the second class change should be enough time for someone to decide if they really want to go further with that character. Even under the current system everyone faces that decision. The name change up to this point just gives the person a third option if you like the character but are unsatisfied with the name you can change it if you feel it is necessary.
I contemplated changing my name. There are lots of characters with a name like mine now. Hell when I played Dungeon Runners briefly I saw someone with the exact same name and spelling as mine. Funny since I took the spelling from a local club back when I was into the scene :p.

I started my SR back in C1, I still want to play a female even if I did change the name. I've decided to keep the name and gender. I probably will stay put server wise as well. I don't like all these new services. Merge or nothing IMO...

As long as name problems are taken care of (being able to trace names)I don't particularly care either way to be honest.
Changing name is stupid, except for the ppl that have name like " xXx yournamehere xXx" i hate them :p

Server transfert is hot :) I created all my toon on NA server right after beta, and then they opened 2 euro server. Now i will probably have a chance to get involved in castle siege and not in the middle of the night for me (yes i have a life) This one is out of topic i know :p

(yes i have a life)

....
you sure you are posting on the right game board?

Hehe i dont know :p

Well i know alot of ppl will laugh seeing that my highest toon is only 63 after almost 4 years :p
I won't.

My highest is only a 65 SE. But I like to experience more than the following:

OMG!! XP Bar moved .00001%! *twitch*

I'm all for name change IF it comes with some measures to prevent the-thing-that-needs-preventing.

/previousnames Tarun
Tarun was previously known as XxXSePhiRoThXxX
XxXSePhiRoThXxX was previously known as iilIliIiliIIii

.. would be a simple but effective way to do it, imo.

I would probably look into a name change myself if there was one. I'm not too bothered by my current name, it just doesn't bear any meaning or anything. It was just a random series of letters that I could come up with at the time because the ones I wanted were taken. These are free now and I've made alts to claim them.

If there are no strings attached whatsoever to name change, I'd be kinda iffy about it, but not to the degree that I'd leave the game or anything.
i play L2 based on my name
every action i take furthers my characters reputation
in fact i have a friend i have known since i was D grade on my first toon and although he is on his 6th character i still call him by his original game name

i would be highly opposed to name changes but since alyra says they are adding a background check to it im only partially opposed
Yeah. That's why I prefer open pvp games. Not because I can lolgank nubz at will, but because your actions have a cause and consequence. That's why I think scamming is ok as a pvp element, but doing it on alts defeats the reputation and consequence aspect of it since it's anonymous.

That's also why I disliked the craft shops when they were added. I really enjoyed forming a customer base on my dwarf and making it onto their "trust-list". Crafting and trading was a ton more fun and involving when you were constantly managing contacts and logistics. Nowadays it's all about the FREE CRAFT PLZ REC.

But that's getting off topic.
hell yeah bring them on!!!
i think the name changes are a good thing. yes i want to change my name, mostly because i am bored with it and i want something new without having to reroll. but i do think it should be a one time deal. another, idea is have it time base, as in one can change one's name every six months (or something like that).
Yjhsdhfsd from clan eternal will change the name to IrLegit, and then IrLegit will be sold to any ebayer with a good valuable price. It help the people that use lineage2 to make real money. Chars like Ysdkjhf are really a pain to petition to a gm check if he is botting or not, so thoose chars will get lv 78+ without be reported and after 78 can change to a beautifull name for sell.

change names only will help thoose kinda of ppls
