im from devianne and it seems that 90% are greeks not that theres a problem with that i just would like to be able to read clan chats with out learning how to read greek
Gustin has many greeks too, and used to have many Scandinavians till they rerolled on Euro timezone servers. Hinde has steady population of Slavic nations (Russian, Czech+Slovak, Polish). And Teon is world on it's own, so no, Greeks are not 90% on every server :)
Spartans, pfft. They should have learned how to pole and stack trains.
well, they are getting there, they are using spears, and they are trapping the persians in a narrow place.
To be honest i think it's the persians need to learn how to morph through themselves so they can stack up in the same spot, and then the spartans can level like crazy
pretty unfair how they use shields with a spear though, and seem to get excelent shield block 90% of the time.
I'm neutral (in the UK), and to be honest i find that the Greeks on Devianne are older, more mature, more helpful and less likely to indulge in smack-talk followed by kiddie-pk's. Please relocate Devianne to Europe and make it a Euro server :p
Hopeless are you playing on the same devianne as everyone else?
The avg age of the greeks on devianne is 16 - 22. I would not consider that older since the avg age of my clan is 28 and up. I believe I am one of the few clans without a greek member and personally most of the greeks that did let in my clan were cheaters, immature, and needy and very not teamlike players.
Then again you have only been playing the game 2 months and ive been here over 3 years.
Btw, i had my main forum account banned for a rather explosive rant about bots in the server. I've been here since closed and rolled to Devianne when it opened.
One of the many things I love about L2 is the multi national player base. I enjoy meeting people from all over the world and getting to know them after we figure out how to communicate. Gamespeek seems to be a developing dialect across languages. Learning other cultures is fascinating.

not all servers are greek-heavy. We do have our fair share, but theres many more people from Bulgaria, Russia and Czech Republic on Hindemith. Overall I don't mind at all if they speak English in my party, since I do too (I'm Dutch and speak English against fellow Dutch ppl with others near)
imho euro's are more polite (older?) then americans anyways. It seems its normal in america to use profanity words. Not sure if thats age or culture related, but I'm betting on the second. Profanity in my country is typically only used by construction workers and kids without a parent nearby.

"Polite" translated:
S Grade euro player and 4 of his mates attack a single player, who is typically in B grade, but occasionally in A grade, and who is not war-tagged or an established enemy, and who is simply in the midst of grinding PVE, thus wiping out his CP and reducing his or her HP to double digits before asking... politely... "PVP???"
Yes, Americans are complete boors by comparison. :D :D :D
SinPalabras, you proved my case though, he did not use profanity (judging from your story that is) :p
And yeah of course theres bad people everywhere, but just a general feel I get from listening to americans in vent, listening to them ingame and on tv; lots profanity so I'm just asuming thats "normal" there. I just can't help thinking they are 15yr olds in puberty though, as thats typically the behaviour which describes it. Wasn't this game 16+? Not sure where I saw that.
1: how frustrated/angry you are. some people curse a blue streak when they stub their toe. happens all th time.
2: how in-control-of-your-vocabulary you are. a lot of people use profanities every 2nd word. some can help it but dont, some cannot help it.
it is NOT an indicator of a social status, country's beliefs, or class. some cursing holds entertainment value; in a movie featuring a lot of violence in the first place swearing is used as a depiction of more intense moods than regular drama.
some countries have swear words that are against the Church (french - its like wiping your [censored] with silk!) and some have swear words that can be interchanged to mean swearing against family, religion, great thinkers, and animals (all aformentioned are greek) and can in some languages run into the hundreds of swear words (again greek)
compared to english's handful of single-word swears and hundreds of thousands of street slang censored words, swearing is a very different thing today than it was 30 years ago.

I'm just pointing out that after something like that happens, well, a little swearing is forgivable.
Seriously, I get your point. There have been times when I've been on vent and heard the type of cursing, epithets and coarse humor that would make a prison convict blush. I usually just chalk that up to "keyboard bravado". People will usually say and do things from a distance and behind the veil of anonymity that they wouldn't say or do if you were standing next to them.
Basically they only do it, because they can get away with it, which makes it harmless. Like that cartoon mouse that shouts in a bullhorn, trying to convince everyone else that it is a fierce lion. You have to laugh at it.

So true... we swear so much....but in our defense most of the words we are using it means something else which surprisingly is polite.... for example the F word which in Greek is the G word it means Gameyomai which means i am getting married. the truth is that we use the F word as you understand it. and because "in our ears" the F word is something we have seen from movies we do not understand the "heaviness" of this word and we cannot offended by this.
however, you have to know that we use the same words among friends. btw Greek swearing system is hilarious and is affected by the culture. for example about religion because we are afraid "God" and we think that fear is respect every time we use specific sentences is like we provoke "God or Gods" to be afraid by us. if you look our mythology you will notice that is human oriented against the will of the Gods and that at the end humans win. ..btw i have notice you before in the forum and i guess that you have studied social sciences. there are nice books in the "swearing system" which you will find interesting.
there, i fixed it for you. seriously though, from the times i've been on vent/ts, i've heard far more euros swearing up a blue streak than i have americans. there are instances where people swear, of course, but i've yet to have my senses bombarded by profanities the moment i initiate a conversation with anyone from the u.s., either in-game or out. perhaps the swearing is merely a reflection of those with whom you surround yourself? in my experience, whenever i've asked someone to refrain, they've made a concerted effort to do so.
imho euro's are slimmer than the obese americans anyways.

Profanity -> what's before the temple -> not sacred...
What's wrong with profanity, gawddam holy Joe! :)
Swear words are flowering our language, *****!

Actually it's not normal here.
That's the problem, as much as one might want to pidgeon hole our country because of the "ugly american" stereotype, it's just that. A stereotype.
One could say that NA players who are prone to use excessive profanity would be compelled to go to a game like L2. Doesn't mean ALL Americans do this.
This is not to say we are all saints.
But consider that I have a huge group of friends and none of them are use profanity excessively. I know of many others who are similiar.
We have a large country with a very diverse group of people. Of course you are going to notice all the "ugly americans" but what about all those Americans who don't act this way?
That's like saying that if you are in the South (in the U.S.) that you are a racist given the history here. And that is simply not true.
I have to agree (again) with Sovrath. In our clan vent there is very, very little profanity (though Erydriel is just weird).
I've never seen one of my clanmates swear in chat channels either.
I think that's an individual thing anyway. In my professional life I can't remember the last time I used profanity. With my friends--sometimes. I recently visited my son and his pals on Campus and was surprised at the profanity and found myself sounding the same! :)

Hehe well, could've fooled me. The information from America in my country (The Netherlands) are mainly the news and Hollywood movies. The latter contains awful lot of profanity, the former pictures you as an aggressive warmonger. Of course media is at fault here as well (media just loves to bring such news). Since you are from Hindemith I'm sure you watch hero-chat.. they do not say the cencored words to prevent getting banned, but that's profanity right there. Notice how the FS (Russian), Titans (Czech) clans do it a lot less to even close to none. Can't really help but think its in America's nature with info coming from both my own social circle and my country's media.
I eventually get used to it since I'm good friends with Fathips (probably invented profanity), but even though (as some other poster here said) it may not be connected to low schooling and young age in your country, but it is in mine. If you use profanity on the streets people here will frown at you and think you are scum/not properly educated or not properly raised. It surpises me other western countries hold other values regarding that subject; thought it would be the same.
Last summer I went to Japan and it's even more strict. In their eyes my country is very rude. Its rude to look people in the eyes, to look at them in the streets, to raise your voice above low volume etc. I guess Japanese find Dutch the less rude one out of the western countries, as my country was the only one they wanted to trade with for a long while (few hundred years ago). I enjoy other cultures and had no difficulty adjusting, but it was a good lesson of countries having other values. Though I would expect America to be closer to my country since we share history.
Slowly my country is getting more aggressive too. Politicians try to solve it in vain. Of course many of my country say it's because America is influencing our culture (don't get mad - America together with Muslims are the scapegoat for anything bad here, guess its just too easy), but it's also because we promote a too easy env to children and allow them to do anything.
edit: you should know roughly 85% of our media is left wing (you would call it communistic or socialistic, but it aint communism; thats one step further left), while politically its roughly evenly divided (right wing you would call democrats - we do not have republicans much at all - we had one but he got killed for having such thoughts). You can imagine the nature of news brought from America by such media.

I'm not sure where the person you replied to is from in the US but where I live swear words are just words and hearing them is all too common. Most people are desensitized to them and don't even bat an eyelash 'round here. In fact, it has been my experience that people notice more when you try not to swear (like saying "oh, darn" instead of just "dammit" to give a mild example).
I do think however that people tend to use language in a more inappropriate fashion in online games. I swear like a sailor and even I find myself offended by what some people have the gall to type. I think the difference is mainly intent and the intent of many online people is specifically to shock or offend because the veil of anonymity the internet provides offers them a venue to spew their bile with virtually zero consequence. I don't think that sort of personality has a particular nationality attached to it. So I think a delineation needs to be made between casual swearing which almost everyone does at some point or other and being offensive just for the sake of being offensive.
Also: maybe you shouldn't believe everything you see in the media. We don't all wear sunglasses, carry guns, throw out witty one-liners while blowing things up right and left. Well...some do, but most of us don't. ;)
Well considering if your not that nationality how would you know if they are cursing?
English and Spanish are the most commonly spoken languages in the world so most people will understand the curses in those languages.
Anyone who has playing devianne for long enough know the greeks swear up a swarm are usually teenagers or in their early 20's and are 90% from private servers meaning they care nothing about rules. All you need to is use bablefish on devianne and listen to hero chat you will hear insults about nationalities and people having sex with people's mothers etc.
I also thought NCSOFT should put a permament enforcement on Hero chat only and make it exclusively english so that everyone can understand whats being said since it is a global chat and the game is made in english.
I never understood this anyway, most greeks on devianne even admit they cannot read any english so why are they playing a game that is published in english?
It seems to me every server is full mainly with chinese bots. Which is quite understandable. The trial accounts are useless for bots (you cannot sell or exchange itesm and stuff) so every bot uses a payed account. This they are highly desirable paying customers to the devs and they are very carefull not to catch any bot.
PS. Don't tell me please they cannot distingush the bots except when reported. The bots follow a certain pattern and it is very easy to implement a software which detects such patterns.
You know, you can type pretty much anything as their name. How about Fhdgsjdogjsi, is that Chinese, european or NA? Cant tell now can you? Unless you see the actual person behind the bot, you cant really tell his nationality. There's bots not from China that try to act like Chinese, going all cao ni ma on you.

I'm not saying that I live in a part of the country where everyone is a saint!
It's just that with the export of our "popular" culture" it pains the Citizens of the U.S. as these violent, selfish, expletive speaking individuals who have no depth.
And quite frankly that is not the entire make up of the country. As far as MY friends go, sure we swear but we aren't like constructions workers where every word is the F bomb (and of course not every construction work drops the F bomb every chance they can get).
The citizens of the U.S. are so varied with so many diverse interests that to soley judge us on our exported culture would be a disservice.

You can type hjfdsagf or dhklnkld or whatever else. I understand it is hard for you to comprehend this, but believe - random typing doesn't make chinese words. As if you just throw a crock of bricks they will not make a wall when falling on the floor.
Who cares what nationality any player has??!!
You'd better play ur game and not try to defend, justify, criticise anybody.
We are all humans with bads and goods, playing a game to have some fun and the luck to be able to interract with people whom we would never have met if wasn't L2!!!
I think you missed Char's point. A lot of profarmer bot trains have gibberish names that aren't pronouncable in any language. sfgfgfgfs isn't a word anywhere.
The larger point is that anyone can name a character -- it won't necessarily match the person's native language. I draw names from literature, which tends to get me whispers "are you Greek? or are you Polish? or whatever depending on the name. The funny thing is when I say "no, USA" people often follow up with telling me the derivation of the name. Yes, I'm American, but despite that I'm not stupid and I've read a book or two.
But even if your only understanding of foreign cultures comes from video games and TV, you can surely come up with dozens of names from other languages.
I'm new on those servers but I see hordes of dwarves with gibberish like hdsajskdskl and such; yesterday I saw a bunch of bots with names like xxlllllllllllllllllllde (guess which one is I and which l), but they had "de" at the end - they all attacked every mob on their closest; BUT - lately I see groups of "inteligent bots" - they have dwarves plus a healer and some other spellcaster AND they attack only mobs with rich spoils totally ignoring the other nearby mobs (besides when defending of course). And all of those "intelligent" bots have a leader (it is a bot too) which has some meaningfull name in chinese while the other bots have the usual gibberish again. Like in the above exmaple the leading bot was named "zaikai" which in chinese means "go away". And I saw at least 3 groups which such combo of names. Besides those bots attack even human player targets and try to steal the drops untill most of the bots ignore human player targets. I was going to organise a party and pk them but meanwhile after 2 days grindingt on the same spot someone else did the job. Only the other spellcaster (guess a buffer) remained and "he" just stayed and looked very distracted:-)
I've often been mistaken as a French player... You'd prolly mistake me for a Chinese player if I spoke Finnish to you. Naming a toon with a Chinese name does not imply anything about the nationality. I could go and make toons like caonima, nihao etc. and you'd be jumping the gun right away. There's untold ways of naming your toon, some hit the keyboard randomly, other use abbreviations or compose the name from several words. Others use literature as inspiration while yet others use name generators or just browse the net for a cool, foreign word. Maybe open up a dictionary and look for some names there.
Chinese name != Chinese farmer. Even if there is a large farmer sector in China, saying that every farmer is from there is just unfair towards Chinese players.
