Merriam-Webster defines the word 'elite" as:

Main Entry: elite

Etymology: French élite, from Old French eslite, from feminine of eslit, past participle of eslire to choose, from Latin eligere
Date: 1823
1 asingular or plural in construction : the choice part : cream <the elite of the entertainment world> bsingular or plural in construction : the best of a class <superachievers who dominate the computer elite — Marilyn Chase> csingular or plural in construction : the socially superior part of society <how the elite live — A P World> <how the French-speaking elite…was changing — Economist> d: a group of persons who by virtue of position or education exercise much power or influence <members of the ruling elite> <the intellectual elites of the country> e: a member of such an elite —usually used in plural <the elites …, pursuing their studies in Europe — Robert Wernick>

— elite adjective

In Lineage2 we sometimes see the derivation '133t' (or something similar) as meaning elite. I have the impression that many players seek an 'elite' status, either in the view of others or in their own minds, to give them a sense of accomplishment. However, I think that the common usage of '133t' by many of these players is not particularly valid. Even though noone has any reason to care what I consider to be elite or not elite, here is what I think:

What is NOT elite:
1. Levels. While the skilled player often has levels, having levels doesn't make someone a skilled player.
2. Gear, overenchants, glow. In other words, anything which can be acquired by throwing adena at a store.
3. Hero status.
4. Ego. Self promotion and bragging doesn't mean you are good.
5. Cheaters. Breaking the EULA by buying adena, toons, botting Etc. means someone is acquiring the appearence of accomplishment without earning it.

What IS elite:
1. Lessons learned the hard way. Someone who powerlevelled with high level players in great gear is not as good as someone who levelled the hard way, in imperfect gear, with others who were doing the same.
2. Play time in game. There is no substitute for experience.
3. Ability to succeed when faced with challenges. When a player figures out how to do a difficult task they are a better player than if someone does it for them or shows them how to do it.
4. Determination, willingness to learn. Being open minded, learning new techniques, being able to kite and solo and pole and party and do RBs and all the other things....not just one or two of them.
5. Depth of knowledge about the game. Knowing the map, the mobs, the gear, the enchants, fishing, spoils, crafting, crushing, economics, leadership, politics and all the other relevant areas of play.

The above is imperfect. If someone is a really good player then they often will be a hero, have great gear, high levels and so forth. There is a huge difference between accomplishing things because you are good and having the outward appearances of being good through acquiring the trappings.

A group of real elite players can hunt in a spot beyond their levels, they can control situations others cannot, they have the confidence based on years of experience, they understand what other classes can (and cannot) do in different party situations.

So what is my bottom line in this post? If you are a new player, don't try to fake being 133t. The real elite will see through you in a second. There are no shortcuts. Level up the honest hard way, learn the lessons of the game, grow as a character and a person. Be patient, be optimistic, be stubborn and don't give up. Be willing to earn it.

Real life works pretty much the same way.

133t is used by some that think it looks clever. Leet speek has developed from its early days and there are as many changes as there are people that use it. Usage depends on mindset and age group as far as I'm concerned.
Whether it has valid usage in L2 to describe someone's char in game by their level, ability to pvp or pve or even play the market, again is down to the individual mindset and age group of the user.
If I see such text on a char, in their name or their speech, I don't think they're elite, clever or otherwise, I simply see them as of the age group that uses such text.
What is this age group ?
It's not a hard and fast range but I would say it encompasses the 12 to 25 age group, give or take a few.
If the title was something like "133t pwnage 4 teh win" or some such, then I'd say it was the lower end of the spectrum.
I'm not too sure if this is the point of the OP but flame on anyway :P
I've seen plenty people play a lv79 character for the first time and they were better at it than the original owner who played it from 1-79 the hard way for 3 years, so dunno...

Check the l2.com server forums "Best of the Best" polls and you'll see what I mean.
Agree, but what is the point in the end... you feel good knowing you are legit, but in comparison with others you feel bad .. seeing others that cheat, killing you in the spot, because they are lame.. so what is the point.. You can play the game for the rest of your life trying reach something (something that you may never have in the end) that some1 has already done it, and on top of that, he don;t deserve it as much you do.. but.. anyways.. you know what i mean.
Is all the GMs faults.. as i always say.. if those who built game don't care.. why should the player care.. is like Parents - Child relationship, if Parents don't care when kid satying out late at night.. why should the child care about it.. and next night ..something bad happens. anyways... i just feel bad seeing a nice game with so many players, losing the aspect of gameplay cause some1 don't do his job right .. that's all.

yeah and i have seen many of the same category of ppl that u mention .. and they expect from me to learn how to use "assist" in pagans.. and i really hope .. it never happen to you make party with noob buffer lvl 80.. the more you rely to his "lame" lvl the faster you end up dead.. expirience talks here.
I'm not talking about your everyday noobs though...

I'm talking about players who are considered "Best of the Best" :)

EDIT: keeping an eye on the new EULA rules etc, am I even allowed to post about these things? ><;;
rampunch = N00B !

j/k. nice speach, but in the end human nature wins. its like that word elite. only a few people actually are and the rest of the world is in a downward spiraling death plunge of arrogance, ignorance, and self satisfaction.
The real elite players know they are and don't say anything about it (like me :p)
+1 + endless truth 1

I look forward to the day when all such transferred toons are permabanned for breaking the EULA.

Forgive me, but I also do not believe you when you say that the transforee is better than the one who levelled it up. They may think they are better, but that goes back to the topic of my first post.
I love the FruityAlcoholicDrink. :)

Very nice one RumPunch!

Account sharing no longer is a bannable offense according to EULA... so, whats the basis of banning?

There's several people who play toons not their own, better than the ones who leveled them up. PVE and PVP are quite different. In PVE, you can manage with little skills, but in PVP it takes quite alot to truly _shine_. Other than having full buffs, boss jewels and superior lvls to your enemies, that is ^^

Usually, it isnt the actual player either, it is the clan/ally who think he is better than the original...
Where did you get that idea from?

The only thing they've permitted are children and immediate family.
Well EULA is not LAW, is just a valid way for a company to publish their rules.. and while you don;t follow them to punish you by the way that refered in thir contract (EULA). W all can get banned if NCSoft consider it necessary. On the other hand, as long no1 is offended.. we all got the right to publish our ideas.. no matter if site belongs to a company .. there are also laws while internet support freely actions. And most of all.. we doing a conversation here .. we do not accuse any1, no names or places are reported.
Bit contradicting list. You said the following things are not 1337:

1. Levels. While the skilled player often has levels, having levels doesn't make someone a skilled player.
2. Gear, overenchants, glow. In other words, anything which can be acquired by throwing adena at a store.
3. Hero status.

Yet you define time spent ingame as 1337. You do realize obtaining 1,2 and 3 in a legit way is due to spending more time in the game right?

Moreover I think someone is more 1337 to be able to pull off a high risk high reward XP scheme (and spend less time/level as a result) compared to lets say, someone spending time soloing lightblue mobs.

My definition of '1337' is pretty simple. Anyone who can impress me in doing something which is hard to pull off compared to the average playerbase while staying legit as 1337.

Woohoo, that would be me :D
what if you are just impressing yourself? Am I still 1337?
