We've all heard it: the trash talking that can be found in any multi-player game. It's not even exclusive to the electronic age. History is filled with examples of intimidating one's enemies to try to gain a psychological advantage.
The hot question this week at Lineage 2 Vault (http://l2vault.ign.com) is: at which point does it become silly? Does trash talking exist as it always has, to demoralize enemies and give an upper hand to the talker, or have we moved beyond tactics and into simple insults?

L2 Vault is good stuff but I go to too many **** forums as it is so I will simply have to admire your effort from afar. That being said...
Trash talk in L2 is so underdeveloped that it actually makes me question humanity in general and our ability to evolve in specific. Seriously, has anyone seen what takes place in the realm forums?
- It's unoriginal
- It's about as entertaining as reading the nutritional information on a box of Wheaties
- It usually revolves around baseless claims with no screenshots, videos, audio captures, or supporting testimony from another party(read: pretty much pointless)
- Making excuses after the fact is NOT talking smack even if you throw in a few pejoratives
- Call your shot. Don't tell people what happened. They were there...they know. Tell them what you are going to do about it.

Not smack talk

See what I did there? The first one isn't that great but at least it's different and slightly creative. The second attempt? All that does is reaffirm every horrible preconceived notion that anyone might have every had about you and your clan. It's the text equivalent getting mushroom stamped and then making sure that the internet as a whole knows you just got mushroom stamped. You're doing more damage to yourself than your adversaries ever could.
I don't mind as long as they keep it in the game. It's when they start resorting to out of game stuff when I'll lose any interest of interacting with them.
It's usually dumb either way. It's so easy to tell when people take the game way too seriously to the point of losing complete perspective over why we game, and it's kinda depressing every time it occurs to me how big of a portion of the online gaming community is made up of these people.
"noob" and "you only won because (...), you're still not as good as me" related stuff got old in the 90's. My 6 year old nephew comes up with more constructive stuff when he loses in console games.
trash talking just like the forums is another form of pvp and a good way to demoralize your opponent - assuming you can come up with something better than lawl bsoe more noob

I think there is nothing more demoralizing than going in killing people and leaving without a word spoken before after or during, I find that ticks people off the most. And also good, if they come and kill you, not responding to them being stupid and getting on with what you are doing. Then go and kill em later, no big.
When it comes to bsoe I see absolutley nothing wrong with that, saves me the price of a brez or asking for a % rez from someone :P.
i also liked what jacent said about types of trashtalking being more detremental to the trashtalker. becuz it's true

You can berate people with lawl bsoe, rofl ebayer, your clans a joke, etc, etc. And thats fine. Maybe low class, but hey. Anonymity+audience=jerks.
But when your own crew is filled with adena addicts, people with BSOE on F2, and don't go anywhere without a raid force behind them. You lose all creditability to throw stones.
But that certainly doesn't stop people from trying.

Considering how, uh...adulterated most people seem in L2 I am shocked that anyone goes to the mat with those arguements. It's like a room full of nickel shouting at each other trying to make the case that the other person is the sleaziest ******.
