Well mostly I enjoy the social aspects..but every 28 days it's PvP time :)
But seriously, most interaction is social..even during the PvP aspect..wether it be working together to kill someone or the half hour of "chatting" with those engaged in the PvP afterward.
Yeah, I am more of a social nut than a PvP mongerer... I love PvP, but the social aspects (trading, making money, doing clan crap, raids...) are more fun for me. All of my PvP experiences are never very interesting, in all PvP instances on sieghart you either get completely rolled or you completely obliterate your enemy with little to no effort. Never a good match in mass PvP, one side or one clan always dominates everyone. (Sieg has always been all but a monopoly clan strength-wise, may be diff on other servers)
Small scale PvP is more fun though, but yeah, I am more into the social stuff.

Now my favorite L2 quote of all time! If that doesnt deserve a ditto, nothing else does. :D
Just chalk me up as another that loves the social aspect. PvP always just turned into trash talk, which takes a bit of brains and wit to be any fun anyway and most of the time I was dealing with an unarmed opponent :)
<---- Dude, but I had to chime in on this because it's been bugging the Hell out of me for years.
Okay, so back in 2004 I honestly could not believe how many women played L2. Other MMO's? Yeah, that I could understand but not L2. It's just too brutal. Too cut and dry.
What I failed to grasp was this: PVP leads to succulent, soul-nourishing drama and the wimens loves the dramas. It's a freaking daytime soap up in this piece and almost every woman I know in L2 just eats that stuff up with the biggest spoon they have handy.
So yeah, there's that and the mindless excrutiatingly long grind as you level. Why do women like that? Well, not just women but social butterflies in general. The grind is so long and the PVE is generally so mindless that it is perfect for having side conversations in Ventrilo that become faaaaaar more engrossing than whatever is happening on the screen.
That's it. Those are my theories as to why a game that seemingly should be the antithesis of what your average female gamer should want is an almost perfect environment for women with developed social skills and a thirst for the salty tears and human intrigue fallout that their bloodlust leaves strewn on the floor of countless catacombs.
Given that I don't PvP, it must be the social aspect.
Its a complete fluke that I play L2 anyway.
A friend was showing it off to me one night. I would've wound up playing whatever game he brought over, most likely.
Hmm the majority of my experience with female gamers are different than yours Jacent. Most seemed to refrain from the hardcore elements. Although some were very heavily immersed in drama, it wasn't always PVP related. Most of those examples in any case have since left out of the dislike for the game.
I do know some examples that definitely fit your example. But those would never admit to liking the drama
I am a female gamer and I really enjoy PVP. Unfortunately I don't have the best toon for it which is why I'm rolling another one who I hope will be much more talented at it!!
As for drama - I hate it. I turn off vent if too much drama is going on and I ignore clan chat at times as well.
The first time I saw L2 was back long ago when they were doing the beta. My then boyfriend was trying to get me interested in the game (since I was a fan of MMOs). I didn't want to play it at all because I was sure I would hate PvP.
But it was just so beautiful...
So, eventually I made a character and started and I love the game and have loved it from that first little dwarf way back before prelude.
What do I love about it and why do I play? Not for either the social or the PvP... though I enjoy elements of both of those. As much as I thought I'd hate PvP, there is nothing in MMOs like the heart pumping adrenaline rush of PvP. I hate being ganked and I can see how people would quit if there was never any chance, but the times I've been on equal footing and I've fought someone are really exciting.
Although I like the social aspect of it, I hate the drama that is sometimes associated with it.
So for me, the reason I play L2 is not because the game has either social opportunities or PvP. I play it because I like the way it looks and I like the variety of classes. I enjoy many things about the gameplay.
Social aspects for me, definitely. I really enjoy anything that requires teamwork - whether small parties or lots of people. Like hunting in a particularly challenging area (like Antharas' Lair back in the day, or FOG now) or going w/ your ally to do epic bosses.
I like PvP, but only in a larger setting, such as ally vs. ally over bosses or sieges. But you know, even in those situations, it's really more social than pvp, because you're all working together, talking on vent, etc.
Also, I pretty much agree with Jacent. Why do you think so many girls go healer/prophet? It gave us lots of time to PM! :) I remember grouping in CT2 and I'd have like 4 or 5 private conversations going at once, as well as party chat (back in the day of random pick-up groups) and clan chat. And then I'd throw off a heal every once in a while, LOL. I don't get any xp at all when I try to do that on my SpS. Even one conversation slows me down!
PvP is loads of fun when it comes around, but I usually don't go out actively searching for it. I think the social aspects keep me here. Without the friends I started with, and those I made along the way, I don't think I would still be playing. ;)
What a genius thread! Look how many women he managed to get to post here lol All of you can expect a lot of PM's from now on that you've been revealed!!
To the men, beware of posers!! They just want your stuff!
The women in my ally seem to like the grind and the PVP.
I have met quite a few female players in L2. but i mostly remember 1, she was the worst of the worst drama-makers i have ever met. everything was turned into drama, it was horrible.
add to that, that her boyfriend also played. only her boyfriend also had a wife. she just loved telling us about how that worked out.
of all the time we were both on Teamspeak, i muted her like 80% of the time. it was just horrible.
Never had met anyone else even close to that bad though.
I'm not much for PvP, although I do get into my fair share of trouble. I think I enjoy most the shopping aspect of the game. I like haggling over prices, trying to get the best deals, seeing how much adena I can make in the shortest time possible, and (of course) filling my warehouse with all the shoes it can hold. Yes I need them all, and no I can't switch out what I wear with which outfit. I'm female after all, 1 pair each of dressy shoes/sneakers/flip-flops does not constitute a fully stocked wardrobe.
Currenly I'm making a dagger just so I have a char to wear my Rind Leather set. I'd planned to wear it on my summoner but it looks exactly (from what I can tell) like Karmian...bleh.
I personally enjoy most aspects of this game, including the pvp part of it! looking forward to the Fortress battles should be interesting! I been playing this game since beta and thus so far love it, im not much on the gossip side of it...im very personal and focused on xping not chatting :P
Well mostly I enjoy the social aspects..but every 28 days it's PvP time :)
LOL, Mystery Men!
"P.M.S. Avenger. I only work four days a month. Is there a problem with that?"
LOLOL!! These were too funny......
I actually got nagged into this game by a good guy friend of mine. Had never played one like it before, being more of an America's Army/Task Force Dagger sorta lady. I've been HOOKED ever since..........
I don't know what I like better to be honest. Not any one thing specifically I don't think. I think the world of my clannies and would do anything in game for them, so the social aspect is important. I like finding great deals or making them.....and I like leveling. What can I say....the sense of accomplishment when you reach the next level? AWESOME...PvP? Not so much, though my clannies (did I mention how awesome they were?) are teaching me as is the friend I mentioned above. Just never really participated before, unless you count killing bots............
However, keep the drama away.....can't and won't deal with it....just because I'm female doesnt' mean I want to deal with or it, or quite bluntly? That I even care......
Because I found it on the internet...that makes it true.
LOL! I laughed my [censored] off at this!!
But seriously guys, you just DON'T know how it is for us sometimes....emo folks wanting to cry all over us just because we ARE female. Sometimes.......(gasps)......I just wanna be left alone to grind........
There is a poster above talking about a drama queen.....I've had my share of them and a drama KING too.......the kind of person you just dread talking to when they get on? Ugh......
PvP is social. Drama is funny to read sometimes, but not too often.
I play this game because it's easy to solo and lots of things to do alone... erm... yeah right... I'm Bishop I surrender... my best entertainment is to party with friends and babble babble babble! ><'
Lol I can't say that I like PvP but that's just because I'm horrible at it...and usually when I'm involved it was someone trying to PK me and me trying (vainly) to fight back. I don't have a talent for PvP it seems. I do enjoy social though because I'm an infrequent player I don't talk to people much :(
I think if this were RL, you would have just gotten smacked upside the head about twenty times from about twenty different girls. That is a very cave-manish way of (excuse the loose usage of the term) "thinking".
Just because you've had limited experience with the game and with pvp doesn't mean everyone has. Several of the best PVPers on my server have been girls. Specifically, three girls in my clan are not just good at pvp - they excel at it. They are just like anybody else, buffing up in CH and porting around to different xp spots to try to find pvp. When my clan leader wants pvp, he knows he can count on them to go with him. 2v5 is no problem, nor is 4v9. Why would you even bring up something so stupid? They are high levels (78/78 at least...) with S-grade gear on their DD mains. You could put them up against any guy and they'd not just hold their own - they'd beat most of them.
One thing you obviously fail to comprehend is that not everyone has the same personality - not everyone likes the same things. It has been my experience that the people who post on forums aren't usually the most hard core gamers and PvPers. The most hardcore players I know are usually too busy playing the game to waste time on the forums. They might have accounts but they have very few posts. Therefore, threads like this are going to be more heavily weighted with people like me (more laid-back gamer w/ social preferences) than the people like my clannies (more hardcore pvp preferences). The girls that aren't interested in the social aspect of the game probably aren't going to be reading the forum at all!
I got tired of UT2003 (lol) and wanted to try something new, so i signed up for Beta and I just loved the graphics and the L2 drama makes it SO funny! Some ppl take this game too serious and make fool of themselves... Ironic? ;)
I don't have the time to grind to the top levels to do Seige/Olympiad, and random world PVP has always seemed kind of pointless.
Social stuff is hard to get into because most players already have their own set social circles in a game this old and it's hard to get to know people. Even if you play a party-oriented class, tanks can be replaced by DD with VR and people box their buffers, so the normal "get into a party to get to know folks" route doesn't work very well.
So really, neither applies. I like exploring the world, poking around, whacking random monsters every now and then, collecting weird and useless items.
As a generalization, however, I doubt you'd find that gender matters greatly in how social/competitive a player is. Particularly, hardcore players who spend a lot of time in game are usually heavily into both.
Gossip is good. I love hearing about all the going-ons with the clan/alliance, be it good or bad.
I don't get a chance to PvP too much since I don't have a, what is now considered, 'high' level toon. But when I do PvP, I start shaking. So, that's good fun too; keeps me on my toes. Adrenaline Rush!
I enjoy both. But playing as a dorf (not high level yet) can make the pvping really hard. The social part is fun, but as Arhel said, most of players have their own social network, and being new as I am, it's hard to get to know ppl.

Your blog is going up on our front page. How dare you not share it with the rest of the class. For shame.
I'm EE and the only thing i hate on PvP is that I'm really REALLY bad in it. And as a particular healer, I'm almost always the first on floor :) so I like more the social aspects of this game.
And what I really love in L2 are pets... Oooo, they are so sweet :D

If you were really bad at pvp you wouldn't be the first person on the floor. You can always tell who the good pvp'ers on the good pvp classes are since they get focus fired before anything else takes place.
You might not respect your performance in pvp...but someone else does.
I think the great healers are macro targeted by the other side. I was at a siege last cycle and someone asked for a rez. We were on the left side of the castle and they were about 900 range from the front castle gate. I ran to the fringe of all our parties to see if anyone was around and got dropped. God that was embarrassing, to get killed literally inches away from everyone elses's feet XD
Now whether I'm a great healer or not I'm not gonna say, but bishops in general get owned because of the mass rez ;)
Of all the biggest drama queens I've known in mmogs, only a small fraction are female. Lin2 in particular has a lot of males who totally flip out at the first betrayal or $%&7 talk, and can remember who PKd them 18 months ago, . . .
If you just look at some of the forums flame wars (especially the real pettyass ones that go on and on until everyone is embarassed for the people involved) how many of those participants have been female?

Generally its the females who make the internal clan drama though :P

I dunno if I'd agree they "make" it, but I'll agree clan drama has mostly had women included in my experience.
