I'm New & Need Advice: Necromancer vs. Bish/Proph

Human Classes Started Last reply 24 posts
Hey all, I played back around release but didn't stick around for all that long. So I'm still a bit new, especially with all the changes they have made since C1.

I've been leveling up a Human Mystic and I am closing in on Lv. 20, which means I need to decide which path to take. In other MMO's, I have mostly taken healing or support classes, so Cleric looks appealing.

Between the two further down that branch, the Prophet is aethsetically pleasing to me and nothing more than that. I like the idea of wearing shiny heavy armor and carrying a sword, but also running around healing and buffing. However, upon looking at the skill list, it doesn't look too exciting gameplay wise.

Bishop seems like the same old healing class to me so I'm sure I can fall into it easily. What scares me away from the healing roles is that I will obviously depend on finding parties. I work a full time job and I game casually, so I'm not sure how well relying on parties all the time would do for me.

That is where Necromancer comes in. I hear the class solos very well and if I ever wanted to simply go out and hunt alone I can. However, are Necromancers desired at all in later levels? I don't want to work myself into a dead end.

Anyway, any tips on helping me decide between these three would be appreciated.
dont go prophet
go bish if you can find groups (have friends or are good in making new ones)
go necro if you wanna solo
Necros remain viable at later levels for soloing and for grouping. Although there are many areas where dark magic attacks are less effective, necro debuffs and crowd control skills remain helpful to a variety of parties.

Sometimes necros get a bad rap because there are a lot of lazy ones out there who forget that they have useful options besides Gloom and their nukes, but I find the class to be one of the most enjoyable and versatile of the offensive mystics.
Agree. Don't forget servitors on top of those debuffs and crowd control skills!
Dont go bishop.

Go prophet if you want to be a casual support class that can solo/not really have too look hard for parties.

Go Necromancer if you want to solo.

Prophets can fit in duos/solo even (not well but better then a bishop)/trios big parties, everything. People always need a buffer. Depending on how active you are will define how many parties you get.
Thanks a bunch for the input everyone. It's getting me closer to a decision. In previous MMO's, I played as a Minstrel in LoTRO, Druid in WoW, and in my earlier MMO days - a Scrapper in CoH and Monk in FFXI. So you can sort of see why I want to be a support class, but still hit things really hard with a shiny sword. I guess that is why Prophet is appealing to me, but I am leaning more towards Necromancer at the moment due to the soloability and added acceptance at later levels.
There are 2 problems with a Prophet.

1) Past lvl 56 or is it 58, you have nothing to look forward to till your 76

2) For the above reason, people usually 2box a Prophet as most people who start out playing a Prophet get bored right around that lvl range. Take it from Nya who was the 1st person to report to you, she's is one of the few people who plays a Prophet other than having it as an out of box buff bot.
cardinals are far more useful than either other class for end game.

Yeah, 58. :/ 20 long, lonely levels.

The new elemental resistance system seems to be the final nail in the prophets' coffin.

If you want to buff, do yourself a favour and go WC.

If you just want to level and solo, go necromancer.

If you want to be useful and fun to play but a bit more difficult to get a party for at the lower levels, go bishop. ~.~;
I haven't personally seen this, but with the new VR nerf, lower level healers might be needed again for aoe groups, if any still exist.

IMHO, if you want to play a class that challenges you as a player, go Bishop. Prophets buff and sit, and any nuker is rinse & repeat. (Figure out the best way to kill whatever you're killing, and rinse and repeat.) The thing I love about healers is that it's never the same twice. And, at higher levels, a good healer is hard to find. If you are a good healer, you'll be very needed, and make a lot of friends. (And, as I've said before, access to Major Heal doesn't automatically make you a good healer.) If you want to buff and fight, WC is an awesome choice, as Maline said. If you want to play a healer/buffer type class, and be able to solo, another option you might look at is summoner. As a summoner, you heal and buff your pet, and fight beside it. You can solo without outside buffs if you need to, and having the best gear isn't essential. The cost in crystals needed to summon pets is kinda high, though. Additionally, at 56 you get your "grouping" summon, and the ability to summon friends (other players). It may not be the path for you, but it sounds like you might find it interesting.

Hope this helps.

Later!

Yes, but that's almost like saying the same of Dominators. The potential problem is the new player enjoying the class and managing to get to the end game. I love playing cardinals, but I know that actually leveling one can be difficult for players without helpful clans.
Thanks again for the input. I'm deciding to go Necromancer. I was good at healing in the previous MMO's, but Lineage 2 has different control mechanics and I don't feel comfortable with deciding the fate of fellow party members. I think I'd let too many people die, and I don't want to be known on the server as "that guy". =)

I have RL friends who I static with, but they've told me they are playing Lineage 2 temporarily. Because of that, I'm going to be on my own later down the line. I'm more of a casual player so I like the flexibility of going solo or partying up. It seems this class would suit that playstyle.

Summoner was mentioned, but to be honest, I uh...think the "pets" you can summon look kinda...not my style. Yeah...

Yeah...I'm not keen on the look of the cats at all (except for Kat the Cat, because I've always thought that fat little thing was hilarious). Even I would characterize them negatively with the word I imagine you were thinking of :P

Still, warlocks are good; the problem that some players have with them is that what most groups want from a warlock is for it to hit the Feline Queen crit++ buff every 2 minutes. If you wanted to play a summoner and get groups more easily, I'd say go warlock (though I don't like the kitties much); if you wanted to play a summoner with a more dynamic role in parties, I'd try a phantom summoner. Not only do they have arguably the best Mass Cubic, their Nightshades are more useful than most players realize, though healing and tanking with one requires more micromanagement than most players are accustomed to.

(As for elemental summoners, their ponies look nifty, but their group summon is also a buffer/debuff-remover, which some players find boring to use, and it also doesn't help that warlocks are much more desirable for most groups than ES)

just go summoner and use a wolf instead ( at 55+..the Black Wolf [transformed version] has good patk and crit rate) =P
If I was starting to play L2 now, I would most likely pick WC or Bishop. I subbed bishop and I'm enjoying every moment with it :) I can go solo if I wish and do about 6% exp in a buffround nuking undeads, without any really fancy gear or buffs(emp1, zerk2 from our Fortress and my own acumen2, Blue Wolf robes and Sword of Valhalla+3 with acumen SA). Mana management in parties seems to be a small problem, but I expect it will become easier after 56 when I get major heal and invocation.

From what I've read, the evolved wolf takes a very large chunk of XP in addition to requiring rez if slain, so a summoner might want to stick with a standard DD summon despite the abysmal crit rate.

At 70+ Summoners get no XP penalty from their 10% or Support Servitors.

Black Wolf is a show stopper and I would personally PK any summoner that I see leveling with that thing.
play to your own style, it will be more fun. i know for certain that bishop and necromancer both rock!

and both ahve incredible skills.

i also have great respect for prophets their support magic is great and some of thier buffs are unique to thier class. and because of these buffs they are able to fight in plaaces a normal healer might have more difficulty in.

do you want to be a healer? a nuker/summoner, or do you want to help other ppl with buffs?

realy the choice is yours
The only unique buffs prophets have are Bless the Soul and Invigor...+ PoF (which is the least powerful prophecy imo) and Mystic Immunity (which is not that useful for 79lvl skill)
Resist fire? I think.. I'm not sure.
You can buy ressit fire (and all other resssits) as potions from shop in Aden, and those resssits are even higher effect lvl and couldnt be surrendered.
Oh ... yay. '__'; Don't stack either?
they stack, but who has that many buffslots...and if potions are better, there is no really reason to use buffs
Ah well, I don't usually have luxury of SwS/BD buffs ... but yeah, I see how it sucks. As if the general nerf to the resist system wasn't bad enough. >.<
