Which armour setup should I go for levels between 40 to 59 as a gladiator? Is it something that can be purchased in stores or require drops, crafting, etc.?
me personally i would go plated leather, not cheap and hardly the best defensive set but the fastest way to gain xp
second option is FP but honestly for those lvls with that class if you hunt in herb drop areas you could easily get away with academy gear till B grade
yeah like nanashi said PL is expensive.. if ýou can't get that then dont worry.. run with academy gear in the C grade until you can afford some FP armor and mid-high C grade focus duals and you're ok well into b grade.. dont stress out about b grade either with that stuff but BW heavy (again if you dont have PL set) would be a nice idea and that works well into a grade, lol
BW is good till high S grade imo (its what i used)
hell if you can get someone to throw VR at you and hunt in a herb area you can prolly get away with wearing PL till then too
you would be right i suppose but it all depends on prefered playstyle too. Me i thought BW heavy was "ok" deep into a grade but it lacked something when i got closer to 70's. I prefer to be "tanking" several harder mobs (well.. as best as i can on my glad.. its not -that- good of a tank but it works and i enjoy it, lol) and i prefer non-herb dropping areas so an upgrade was kind of due, hehe.
Yeah, strap on VR, thats all you need and keep the PL set but be sure to keep your weapons trimmed high and you should be ok with that set for a looooooong time if you're hunting in herb areas. Those are mostly 1x and with good weapons and THE best DD bonus on an armor set and the mobs go down quickly enough to not be much of a threat.. and with hp herbs you're good to go even more.

Now, as noob as I am, can I ask you what the heck are BW, VR and Focus Duals (I know they are dual sword, but what's the "focus" part? ) :)
And again, how come Plated Leather is not the best as defense but makes you XP faster?
BW = Blue Wolf Heavy armor set.
VR = Vampiric Rage buff, also Chant of Vampire (Vampiric Chant?) and Dance of Vampire buffs, and effect given by some items. It will let you regain a certain percentage of the damage you do with regular melee swings (not skills) as health for yourself. Will let you survive without needing potions or strainign the healer's MP outside of emergencies. :( The spiteful little healer in me hates being outdone by VR. ._.
Focus Duals refers to no particular set of duals. Focus is a buff (which increases your chance to land a critical hit with a normal melee or ranged attack). There is also a 'special ability' (SA) on a weapon that can be unlocked which does the same, that SA is called focus and enable you to land more critical hits while you have the weapon equipped.
SAs for dual swords are unlocked by enchanting them +4 or higher and start in the middle of C Grade. Each dual sword combo says which SA they will have at +4 or higher in their description: Visit the blacksmith in Giran to see which SAs are available for C Grade swords.
