Augmentation Dillema

Happy new year first of all.

Here goes, i had this Great Sword + Focus(Innominate Victory for my kamael) and was lucky enough to get a +9 +12 critical from a mid-grade lvl 49 Life Stone.Now.. last night i dropped a High Grade lvl 49 Life Stone.. and it was REALLY tempting to try my luck, so i did it and got +14 p.def +78CP and a chance to "momentarily stun your target during a physical attack".Now i was wondering.. is this worth it to keep it?Or shall i try a mid grade or something for crit chance? The skill surely sounds ok.. but since it comes from a lvl 49 life stone, isn't it gonna to be kinda useless in later lvls?(not sure about mechanics)

Either i keep this till or try my luck again, need some suggestions :)
You can always keep it for a little while and see how often it activates, in my experience the "chance" augments activate at a pretty low rate so you may end up removing it and looking for a higher crit like you had before.
I was testing it for like 30 mins with a friend of mine(he was lvl 51)..it never ever landed, i don't get it, it can't be THAT low.As for PvE it seems to land more often(in 15 mobs or so it will land once)and it can also be resisted of course.. like you said these "chance" skills are kinda useless. The raw critical is always cool, i wish i never cancelled my old augmentation, going to take many tries untill i get 20 crit or so again.
Don't the level type makes a huge difference in chance augments? I used a lvl 48 mid grade and got paralyze on normal melee hit but it barely ever landed. In about 2 and a half hours it activated twice and but was only affective once. This on a dagger user with high atk.spd.
Yup the Lvl of the LS makes a huge difference. I know someone who put a 76 Mid Grade LS on his Infernal Master to use on his sub, and it landed constantly in Witches on yellow and pink mobs.

It was "On a Physical Attack, has the Chance of Seal of Winter Landing" (which is slow)

But yeah i had a Physical Attack, Curse of Doom Augment on my GS with a Mid Grade 48 LS and it landed very rarely even when i was fighting mobs that were Green and White to me.
augmentation roulette is a suckers game

I bet you can keep trying stone after stone and it'll be millions worth of blacksmith fees before you get something better than your first stone was. On a c-g or b-g, is it really worth it?

For what it's worth, I have a passive augment (fear when hit) that activates quite often, and even when it fails they still run away for a while.

Bad augment if you are a melee DD :p
chance augs are all junk. if you are not using lvl 76 stones, you should just try to get crit rate. skills/passives from non-76 stones are crap.

Well, yes. For active skill augmentations (like the nukes), the life stone level determines the skill level of the skill. That is, a nuke from a 76 life stone is the same level as a lvl 74 skillset nuke (regarding power), while a lower level life stone might only give a nuke comparable to for example a lvl 52 skillset nuke. Same for other active skills like paralyze, silence or whatever. So I would guess that the same holds true for the chance skills. So using a "chance to stun" augmentation from a lvl 49 life stone on a mob would be like using a lvl 49 stun skill, while using a "chance to stun" from a lvl 7x life stone would be like using a lvl 7x stun skill. And that WOULD make a huge difference in landing rate, especially when you use the lvl 49 augmentation on very high lvl mobs or players, or the 7x augmentation on low lvl ones. It could of course be that there is also a difference in "firing rate" between low and high lvl chance skills (i.e. the skill just going off, not the actual landing rate), I have not really tried out chance augmentations enough to notice a difference myself.
An orc does a hurricane so you think he subbed an SH so you run at him suddenly he takes smashes his sword on your head giving you a concussion then you try to run from the slow or and he hurricanes you again and again and again

... and he hurricanes you again and again and again

I've never seen an active skill on an augment stone have that fast a re-use rate. I've had various wind and fire spell active augments, and each one took up more mana than they were worth, were slow casting, even with acumen stacked, zerk, dances, etc., etc., and didn't do all that much damage.

Is the augment that you speak of truly a possibility?
augments blow.

cept wild magic for nukers.

I've had fear on my drac lvl 76 for a while now, only keep it for the +29 Crit.

only works on mobs, and only landed ONCE in pvp and it was a duel, so it was lame.

I'd much preffer Chance skill than most Active types.
there's a small list of augs that are good. it is basically:

active/passive: wm/clarity/mana gain
crit rate
active anchor
active nuke on certain classes for oly/xp.

that's about it.

These are pretty parochial statements to make considering they are entirely based on biased personal opinions/experiences, and my reasons for saying as such will be elaborated below.

/agree those skills are very good indeed but:

Active: Mana Burn, Stun, Celestial Shield, Invocation...

Passive: Reflect Damage, Focus Mind (which was sorta mentioned as 'mana gain' maybe?), Inner Rhythm...

Admittedly some of these augmentations may be considered 'situational'... but contrary to popular belief, the usefulness of a skill whether it be Active, Passive or even Chance is:

a) Down to the individual, and possibly down to their desired playstyle (as not everybody plays the same class in the same way).

b) Down to the class the player is using, and possibly...

c) Whether your main usage for the weapon is for PvP, PvE or perhaps both?.

Hell! Someone may even find a Firework augment useful, even if it was just for fun!? It's a shame to think that there is nothing more to the game than just what 'pwns' the most.

Personally i would love to have any of the mentioned skills above (with the exception of fireworks :P ), including the ones kayosoni_ mentioned; but haven't been lucky enough, i generally get augments that don't correlate with my class... which is when it does suck *sniff* (T_T)

Eggy ^_^
To add to the list of useful things are others like:

Chance: Silence. Here's a scenario that I've tested it in arena. Someone had a Chance Silence on their weapon (it was a Drac bow, but details are nonessential atm). I anchored the Sagi and after a couple of nukes to him, I was silenced by his augment and yes, he was still paralized :p

I can understand how 'some' or very few classes can benefit from Active nukes, but to an actual nuker, those nukes are less than worhtless.

Even fully buffed, the actual cast speed on those active nukes is just horrible. (though I should have kept Prominence skill on my Necro :( )

Some of the others that are good imo are:
Bsoe (long as you don't change weapons)
Ressurection - if you got this skill from a 76 stone, with BW robes, you can rez people for about 80%. Not bad when your out of brez or a cardinal.

The augment that kayosoni_ has (had?) on that raised Weight limight to a Dwarf's standard on his Sagi that was pretty cool too imo.

However it's all luck driven, so there are some good Active/Passive/Chance skills, the majority of them is crap with an even higher chance of getting 0 skills from numerous augment attemps - aka complete waiste of money.
actually the active nukes are now affected by cast speed so they are pretty good.

EE with nuke aug owning every class in olympiad except prophet just goes to show.

This is why I don't bother with Life Stones; I already know my Destroyer would probably just get a small increase in Matck and MDef. And my SH would almost certainly get some combination of increased Patk, increased PDef, increased crit rate, or increased crit damage.
