Are SE's soloable?

Dark Elf Classes Started Last reply 36 posts
I am sure this has been asked before but for the life of me I can not find a post about it anywhere.

In the level 30-40 range a SO can still use his/her nukes (WindStrike, Disrupt Undead etc...) with some success. Once you hit 40 though the affectivness of these spells drops like a rock. Either they hit for a fraction of what they use to or more often than not they just simple fail.

So my question is. Can a SE in the 50-60 range (or higher) solo with any hope?

One suggestion I have heard is to get a bow and do the root and shoot method. Does this actually work? Would not want to invest in a bow just to find out that this type of play on a SE if not practical.

Since it seems most of the SE's I see in game are draggers there is not a lot of people looking for live SE's in parties. At least in the 40 - 60 range.

Any SE masters out there care to bistow there wisdom on a SE in training.

Many Thanks
yes u can solo till A grade but be prepared for a slow grind unless u use overenchanted weapons. a typical setup for c grade would be : full plate set [heavy] or plated leather set [light], two-handed sword with focus or dual swords with focus. for b grade u should go bw light and tsu*sls+4 or more. good luck
You can solo in a transformed state. The only drawback that the transformation cooldown is 4 hours, so you'll need to buy more transform books (they are expensive) besides Onyx beast and Death bladder, unless having break for 3 hours after an hour is no problem for you.
Don't use heavy armor, you have no masteries for it, and your attack speed will suffer.
I never tried bow and root myself, but if you'd like to test it, buy yourself a shadow bow or use shadow weapon exchange coupon given to you after 1st and 2nd class transfer.
As for nuking, I leveld my prophet till 52 in CT1 using disrupt undead last learned at the lvl 35, and it was fast. Failed attacks happened like 4-5 a buff round. There is a good spot a bit north of the forest of mirrors, populated with ghosts dropping herbs.
Have you actually tried grinding in heavy?
Heavy is useless on mage types without mastery. With light masteries you can have around the same p.def as when you wear the heavy.

Even with overenchanted weapons the grind would be slow, perhaps 10 times slower than the exp you would earn in duo with a dagger class.

If you don't have many transformations or a great wolf I don't recommend soloing as an SE.
Thank you for all the suggestions. Will give them a try and see how it goes.
It works fine soloing as a SE.

Im duoing with my summon on the PS (got wc 56 buffs = worse than SE buffs). Using maj light and +10 sls*sls. I can kill a mob almost as fast as he can, though I have +4 str tats.

Its definately not 10x slower than duoing with a dagger. But do dmg while duoing with a character, do the combat SE, highly appreciated by DDs, and very effective.

it might be 10 times slower than a dagger soloing with oop 78 PP+BD+SWS but actually its about 75% of the xp a normal dd class would do self buffed with normal gear at the same lvl. (self buffed means ghp+gsap)
It definiately is 10x slower, with a dagger you can go non-stop. in Solo you are healing youself, waiting for mana and doing 4+ times less damage than the dagger user can. Try soloing again for an hour without your summon and see how it goes.
Hehe, no way mate.

Healing and waiting for mana? In a green mobs area that drop herbs, your vr will do most of the healing and the herbs will do the rest, more than enough.

And no, I wouldnt solo at my area, Im hunting pink mobs. It would be stupid to try solo them :) Im not saying that as a SE you could hunt same place as a phantom summoner with oop buffs, lol. Im saying as an SE its definately possible to solo and far from 10x slower xp than a dagger or whatever dd with selfbuffs.
My cuz Solos a room in witches with an SE with robes and mage weapon :)

and a great wolf...
Nightfox I wasn't talking about a DD with self-buffs, I said in duo with a dagger is perhaps 10x faster.

Anyway if you haven't actually tried it I wouldn't expect you to know. I have, and I have a shillien saint and a level 72 shillien elder which I have tried to solo at various places with various weapons, all are very very slow compared to being in a party. Even without using any skills a dagger user can kill over twice as fast as a SE.

SE's are support characters and that is what they do best, soloing will get you nowhere fast. If you know any SEs who have soloed to the 60 range I'd like to hear from them, until then I totally disagree.
Yeah, then I missunderstood, a duo is way faster.

I just dont like the idea about "support chars cant do nothing but support". Having played both a wc/ol/ps I know that hitting helps, and it isnt in vain. I know, ol/wc has more str, but check out the dps on a +4str SE, it isnt that far away from the real DDs, and it definately isnt low enough to just discharge.

A SE definitely can deal some damage, so hitting the mobs really helps when you're in a duo/larger party and the mp situation allows it. But soloing as a SE? It does work at the lower levels, but in 7x it becomes pretty much pointless. I tried it out, and the problem is simply that you cannot kill fast enough, so the mobs have enough time to use whatever nasty skills they have and that means that you have to heal yourself a lot, and you cannot outkill the respawn (so you might get social aggro). It does not help that you cannot use heavy armor (like a prophet can, tallum heavy ftw), so you can only use light armor or robes, and compared to e.g. a dagger in light armor, the evasion is not good enough. When you solo, you also miss a lot of useful buffs e.g. a prophet gets, which would really increase the damage output, like greater might, zerk, holy weapon, haste - and the buffs which would decrease the damage taken, like greater shield, bless shield, all the resist buffs like unholy resist, elemental protection, magic barrier and of course btb/bts.

SE has VR which definitely helps, but the damage you deal is not really high enough to solo without constantly healing yourself. When I tried soloing on my ShS, even with prophecy of wind buffed and block shield (= mini hex) on the mob I had to greater heal myself several times per green 1x hp mob, and that meant running out of mp after a handful of mobs unless there was a lucky mp herb drop (and at lvl 79 you need about 15-20 x1 hp mobs for 0.01% ...). Compare that to duoing with a nuker or bd or something like that, where you can go killing pretty much non-stop, and you'll see that the claim "soloing is 10x slower xp than duo" definitely is not wrong.

Yes, if you throw enough ultra high end equipment at it which you might have from a sub (like OE S grade weapon, Drac Light armor, boss jewelry, gulping down resist potions, l2day scrolls and whatnot like crazy, and maybe bringing a prophet 2box with you) it probably can be done halfway effectively, but it is simply so much easier to just grab any kind of nuker or melee DD and go out in a duo.
Yeah, totally agree with everything you said, at 7x I would never consider soloing a SE.
the OP asked about the 50-60 range, everything else is nonsense. and the answer is yes
I agree with... everyone.

Yes you CAN solo. But... do you really WANT to? Ahhh the grind... :)
Light armor (Plated leather is great) and focus Duals or a focus 1 handed or 2 handed sword. I would stay away from using a dagger unless you are fighting green and non light armor type (high evasion type) mobs.
Use that setup and you could solo well into 60+. When you reach A grade I would switch my armor to DC light and yes you can solo all the ways to S grade with a SE.

However a SE is very slow to solo, but it is possible. Party EXP is much faster but you cant always find a party. I used to solo my SE occasionally (when I couldnt find parties) all the ways to about lvl 75
Well, i tried it,
With Drac set, Angel Slayer, and baium ring, and selfbuffs (and PoW)+pp buffs ... ya, it can be done...worth it? no.
Waste of money? Yes.
XP? ... lol, i didnt even check..but crappy.

but! yes, you can do it, but try to find a party ;)

I agree not worth it in the 70x mob, but in the 50-61, get +5str-5con, BW light armor great pdef and cast speed. Focus SA duals B grade, staff of eveil spirit with btb lvl 5 buff. pop greater atck speed potion and solo away. Off course it not fast as in group, but you would not be soloing if you have a group, too many box se, pp and WC beside nuker party no one want a live SE anymore, so soloing will be what you be doing mostly. The Good thing is it doable and it so fun, with my +4 BWlight and +8 sam*tsu focus and btb lvl 5 buff my lvl 70 se can solo the antler mob at WOA, sure i have to root and do greater heal+heal in midfight but killing the mob and getting 13K+ xp is not a problem. better then shouting in town hour hours or taken pity party from clan where u only recharge other mp.
66 SE, transformed into death bladder, self-buffed prior to the transformation + 52 PP buffs, wearing DC light set and bloody orchid clean, made around 1,5% in 20 minutes on the Forbidden Gateway. Onyx beast is almost equal, but I have to drag PP to heal occasionly. Unfortunatly I cannot afford any other transformations to test.
Ok i have a question. Why, when a SE wears light armour it does not increase the things it says it does (atk speed, cast speed MP regen etc) and yes i do have the mastery. When wearing robes my stats are exactly the same as when wearing light! So is it bugged whats going on?

No, it's not bugged. Take your light armour off, you'll notice huge drop in the cast and attack speed.
Wearing robes has this effect too. If you take a closer look on your passives, you'll notice the skills "Magician's movement", "Spellcraft" and "Mana recovery" - those give you similar stats bonus when robe is equiped.
The attack speed increase just offsets the innate mystic penalty, you will have exactly the same attack speed as the normal fighter class with equal DEX.

Like the poster above me said, it DOES work. It DOES increase atk speed, casting speed and so on - compared to being naked or in heavy armor. Robes get the same bonus, that's why you see no difference. It is just confusing that the bonus for robes is not mentioned in the robe mastery skill, but instead it's a separate skill you get for free at lvl 1.
Well, are soloable if you have the necessary adena finances to gear yourself accordingly. I find this the biggest impediment..

If not, get parties or you'll be stuck forever at around lvl 40.
SE solo is light armor, and duals/2handi/fist/dagger. No need for the m.atk weapons, for you dont have undead nukes, so you need to focus on your VR and heal when needed.
Will be very slow.
Find a Dagger or a Tyrant or a Destro for duo and lv up in no time. SE soloing is boring and slow.

Pffts, heck yeah! Inquisitor ftw!!

However, the best way to level is find yourself a nice WL or Destroyer friend and go aoe in the cata's. I aoe duo'd from 40-65 back in the day. Then sadly aoe partner left game for a bit, so I moved on to nuker recharging :( which imho is insanely boring, but very cost effective ^^ Then one glorious day, NC bestowed upon SE's inquisitor stance and there was much joy! Days of shouting for parties were over! now with a decent weapon you could go out and kill things...by yourself! Grab some magic haste pots and you are good to go. Mid 60's & Up i lvled in blazing swamp (good way to get lots of reagent pouches for your sub & noble quests btw). 76 & 77 IOP is good. As long as you hunt where there are mana pot drops you are good to go. But even better, lvl up a kookaburra to give u mp and nuke your heart out ^^

Oh, also dont' bother to go out inquisiting until you get invocation or you'll probably spend alot of time waiting for mp regen. Until then, either use your undead mob nuke (which will hit pretty good even in C grade)...actually no you run out of mp fast doing that too... Find a nuker or someone to duo w/ for C grade you'll be b grade in no time. Took me a week, before vit, duoing aoe w/ a sws.

In 50's you could try cemetary, tho pots don't drop there so you will do lots of waiting on mp. Or go to FP, or fields of massecre, undead mobs & herbs drop.

Btw, back in the day i tried the bow & root...good in theory..not in practice. Even w/ guidance you miss alot, and you don't hit hard...def. not worth it. Also lvling w/ duals & light armor (w/ dagger you just miss alot)..is very slow and def. not worth it imho. Tried it and it sux, maybe if you have a great wolf about your level but w/out it you just don't hit that hard even w/ shots. Inquisitor is the way to solo for any healer class (but especially se's since we get emp & wm ^^ )

And lvl'ing in inquisitor is no more expensive than being a nuker..cuz thats basically what you are.

o sorry lol I'll Just watch next time :D
solo able ? NO

duo able ? Yes

you can duo with a prophet (acumen/zerk) or EE (clarity ?)

se can't be recharge so the EE doesn't help that much, but with prophet u have better survivability
Nightfox I wasn't talking about a DD with self-buffs, I said in duo with a dagger is perhaps 10x faster.

I'm an SE that has solo'd past 60, way past. Despite what many of these fools will mention, I do it by choice. I can't stand being in a party of BOTpets, party or clan. Now that SE have the Inq stance, yes, it's VERY easy to lvl up an SO/SE/SS. Of course this is provided you can afford all the shots, armor and oop support to get your SE to a high enough lvl to be an oop support for your "main".
I have lvl 60 SE, and I solo a lot. She dies a lot too and the grind is definitely slower than other chars, but I need her for group I party with, and prefer to solo otherwise. The SEs are primarily heal/buff, the nukes aren't very useful except for those against undead, but she can fight effectively with good weapon and her weakening skills. I like her better than the EE I once had.

At the moment I am using high-end fists I picked up -- Anthro Nail? I pair her with lvl 51 hatchling and would like to give her a strider, but that quest is the pits (tried it once before with another hatchling). (Definitely use beast shot and spirit shot, quadruples damage) The new mp skills help her keep going in her main state. I never tried the bow idea mentioned here; I just was given a nice bow, may try that out.

As onyx beast she does well. Onyx beast can also pair with hatchling, but you have to transform before summoning. The speed of a dagger works better for onyx than heavier patk weapons. I have a B kris. Yes, its a 4 hour recharge, but if I only take her out once a day as onyx, and play other modes in between, its not an issue.

I have tried inquisitor, but I don't really like it. All transforms separate her from heals/buffs. Maybe I just need to practice it more.

Choosing the right hunting ground is key. She can only do 1-2 mobs at a time, and I made a macro that battle heals, targets next and attacks so she can keep going if need be. I always use a skill or attack first so hatch doesn't take damage and then if attacked by another I can switch off, let the hatch kill #1 while I work #2. Herb drop fields are best.

I like the triangle patch near the port to Forgotten Plains -- only 3 mobs, and only the drake is aggro; or working the high ground from the FP port north. The mobs are spread thin. Or in 50s, the cemetery lots below and above the main cemetery. There are active bots there, but I make use of them to ensure I'm only working 1-2 mobs at a time. Picking off stragglers attacking the bot, etc. Stick with greens for easiest longevity.

I use macros to speed up her action, like the target self/battle heal/target next/attack or windshackle/attack/petattack. I also stock LHP (100-200 on hotbar) and have a potion shot worked into attack macros. It's almost as good as VR in keeping hp up. My wind hatchling has a stun attack I can macro in.

Use your life stones; get real jewellry and augment it all -- great mp perks. Augment all your real weapons too.
If you like pets just get a wolf when he gets 55 your like a pet class sorry summoners!

SE's are awesome at lvling wolves just buy haste 1 or 2 pots, with VR he dosen't need much healing though because they hit so hard
SE is soloable depending on the area. I have mine with an Avadon Robe set and a +3 Homunculus (acu) and perfectly solo in FoD in inquisitor. With mana herbs and invocation you could hunt then pretty much without stopping.

I have also a +3 Stick of Eternity (blessed body SA) and got a Shadow Flare lvl. 6 augment on it. So I pretty much buff the wolf and help him kill faster without spending too much mana. Also, whenever I need to heal the wolf I use Bless the Blood while he's attacking and it practically heals itself without spending virtually any mana.
