Summoner leveling a wolf

General Discussion Started Last reply 22 posts
Greetings.
I was somewhat wondering for some time now. With the old system a Summoner was able to raise a wolf (or a hatchling) quite well as he was able to support it with his summon buffs and heals.

Now since Kamael has launched they changed the system for pets gaining experience so they receive a percentage of the masters gained experience.

This may sound good at first. But this as well means that a Summoner class now is one of the most inefficient classes to raise a pet.

There are few options as a Summoner to raise a wolf. Either we have to "nuke" with our level 35 nukes - this obviously is limitated to a certain level and gets more and more inefficient as we are leveling up facing stronger monsters.
Or - on the other hand - we engange into melee combat, which is obiviously nearly as useless as nuking as we are doing very few damage and can as well sustain not that much damage either.

I'm not sure about this and i'd like to ask all of you whether you already have some experience in raising a wolf as a Summoner or can think about ways doing so.

Let's discuss on this base:
- Phantom Summoner is level 40 (and don't want to nuke around like a Spellhowler)
- Wolf is level 25 and may be equiped with the top equipment which is buyable at the pet trainer (not the top upgraded ones)
use a warcrier. dont use a summoner.

even a DA does a better job.

Yeah but just a guess... from his post it sounds like he doesn't play a Warcrier. Sounds like maybe he plays a Summoner. ;)
Currently i'm playing a Dark Wizard which will soon will change to a Phantom Summoner. I do not intend to level up a WC for leveling up a wolf.
It's just that it's somewhat sad that all Summoner Classes are rendered useless for pet leveling with the new pet system.
think of it this way: all classes in L2 have a place and are exceptional at one field or another. every last one.

summoners just werent meant to level PETS, they do not excel at this.

it can be done, but not with any degree of speed or efficiency. other classes can do it better.

tell you what when youve made your millions at L2 BUY your wolf/dragon. levelling it would not be fun/easy.
I would recommend NCSoft to make it so a summoner (any of the 3) can have 1 of their normal summons and a pet at the same time. It would only make sense, they're the SUMMONERS of this world for crying out loud...
It's painfully obvious, so they won't do it.
Some work around for all "arising issues" (unbalanced damage output, soul shot "who uses what", buffs target/heal target, everything) can be thought out, just think about it.

warlock with a cat and a black wolf attacking you. no. see no problem with that at all >_>

The only way you can really level a wolf with a summoner now is if you are in a party. and if you have a wolf summoned in a party then you are basically useless to the party.
Same as if you need to level sineater on summoner.

As I said in my post (last paragraph), workarounds can be found.
Workarounds for PvP are already in place, the wolf already does crap dmg in pvp (remember the harsh pvp penalties?). They can work around it somehow, read what i said, work arounds CAN be found for PvP. (and even for "overpowering" PvE.
One only has to think them up, and it's not all that difficult. :)
hmm once the wolf is lvl 55, a summoner can easily level a wolf

its from 40 - 55 that's difficult, but then again, a summoner can pretty much nuke until 52

If you want to lvl a wolf with a summoner you can, but don't be picky and choosy. Saying that you don't want to level a wolf with your nukes is pointless 'cause its obviously the best way to do it and that any other way would suck.

That said, 25 wolf/ 40 toon is a bad combination. Your better to have a lvl 25 or under char to level a lvl 25 wolf the most efficiently.
The Black wolf in top gear is pretty dangerous and can be used in pvp as they hit rediculusly hard... and if you put that thing with a DC with full buffs and CoV, omg the horror...

That's true. Currently - as i am still leveling up to 40 i as well have my wolf out to raise his level a bit as well. Maybe i will give him afterwards to my higher toon. He may actually push him a little bit faster than i do.

I'm looking forward to see how the wolf will be doing after he evolves.

In my experiece, the wolf almost always gets about 1 level for every level the char gets - whathever the level of the char you use to level it (to a certain degree). So don't think that the pet will level faster with a higher level char, 'cause I don't think it will.

Also, always have the pet out, otherwise it will never catch up to you in levels.
Isnt it a fixed %?

lvl 10 toon killing a mob in 5 secs: 500 xp earned > 50 xp to wolf
lvl 70 toon killing a mob in 5 secs: 15000 xp earned > 1500 xp to wolf

The numbers are just an example, but it shows lvl does matter, in an nondirect way that is.

I don't think so, this would make leveling a wolf for a high toon easy as hell. There are penalties applied to the exp the wolf gains. If he is more than 11 levels higher than you he will consume more of your gained experience, if he is more than 6 levels lower than you are he will gain less experience.

Does it still applies that one cannot summon a pet which is more than 20 levels above him?
The wolf gets XP for the damage the wolf itself puts out. Wolf sits to the side and you kill then wolf gets no XP, but you get it all. You sit to the side and let wolf kill then you get no XP, but the wolf gets it all. You both fight then XP is split up by how much damage each of you did.

Of course... this was back in C3 or C4, I don't think there has been a major change to lvling a wolf since then.

wolf doesnt concern me as much as the fact of a sineater. I find it unfair that a summoner cant on their own lvl a sineater unless they want to take 50 yrs to do it after there in b grade. Your to high to nuke at this point and actual kill stuff. If you in pty ur leeching cause u cant have u pet out. Wolves are an extra thing but is ncsoft suppose to say in a pvp game where u get penatly for red just cause ur summoner u cant work off ur sins without havin to go through twice the effort.

It is in many ways unfair as a Summoner. You get exp. deducted, you can't do the Sin Eater efficiently, you're somewhat gimped if you try to level a wolf let alone a baby pet. You can't have one of your summons out if you're using a pet. You're forced to use up Crystals for your Summons so this is a steady Adena drain.

On the other hand, you're way less gear dependant as anyone else, you don't even need an OE weapon. Beast shots always cost the same and are not bound to the player market. Your summmon is very strong and enables you to fight mobs which are actually extremy dangerous to many other classes.

And...umm...i can't think of anything else at the moment :D

Hey thanks! lol I had been looking for changes but hadn't found anything about a change. Only thing I saw was addition of Black Wolf.
its called a party. i know summoners are notorious for the solo grind. but realy if you in a good party you wont even need a summon out, friends should be happy to help you lvl your pet (if not find better friends), so buff up that wolf (unless you have a WC in the party, then let the Orc do it. hell) and get to lvling it, save those crystals you normally use, and enjoy some friendly conversation while you grind with your friends. If you dont feel usefull enough, get battle heal ready to heal the other pets in the party.

also you should realy get into a pole / aoe party to lvl that sin eater. takes alot less time and almost no effort. just do what you can to aid the group other than having a kitty cat out. or dont pk people.

And that's the issue here. Almost every other character is more useful in AoE- or Grind-Partys than the Summoner is without its Servitor.
