Lineage II vs the Earth

Oil ressources decreasing, everyday life prices going up, global warming, we are doomed!
Yes, but we still want to play Lineage II.

Isn't it time to find a better solution for private shops than having computers on all nights and all days?
Not only it is a waste of energy, but you spend more money with the consumption of your computer to get adenas than if you go eBay. Isn't it wrong?
And I'm not speaking about the fantastic crit errors and disconnections you get while in town. You leave your computer at 8am, go to work, it disconnect at 9am and still runs until you come back at 7pm to see you've been disconnected (you don't know when) and you didn't sell anything.

Isn't it NCsoft responsability not to encourage players to waste energy?
Don't you think it's time to stop saying "L2 is so special thank to its private shop system, it's part of the game"? Yeah L2 is the "special kid", if you put it that way.
The basic arguments are "no WoW (auction house) in L2" (well auction house is in FFXI but heh!) and "We want to have a feeling that towns are lively" (NCsoft says). I think there are ways to respect that without having to let the computer constantly on.

Do you think it is an important topic or unbalanceable classes dilemna is the only problem devs should care?
I agree 100%

Leaving computers on uses up a lot of money and energy, and, of course, also means more negative environmental effect.

Just a little note. You can see when you critted. It says on the critical error note.
what this have to to about the game?
You can't see when you've disconnected, in fact it looks like everything is ok.

I totally agree with this btw.
dont leave your comp on then
As long as you are aware of when you set up shop you can get a good idea of how long you were connected by counting the hourly messages that you have been playing too long and should take a break.
At least I am assuming those messages are hourly I have never really timed them.
I think the OP is looking for some sort of WoWish auction system.
Knowbody is forcing anyone to stay logged in overnight. When you log in it is your choice to grind, pvp, farm materials, siege, set in a sell/buy shop ect....

Though I do realise it will take alot longer to fullfill your goals you have the option to turn of your computer anytime you like. As much as I like games with auction houses I think it would change the hole dinamic of this game. This doesn't mean I wouldn't want to see them, I just wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to happen.
I like the idea of being able to stay in game in shop mode even after you've logged off, until you log back in. It would preserve the market place feeling, shop titles would still matter and all that. This has been suggested a few times already, and I think it's an excellent idea.
Yeah I like the idea, never thought of it this way. Eve has this system applied to skill training, you can learn skills while you are logged off. This could work, just hope there is someone out there that hears this.
This can also reduce server-side network traffic, possibly allowing more connections/less lags. Very good idea.
I like the current model because I can change my shop on the fly. I can also see at a glance if someone is selling something at a bargain. But I do wish there was a change so we don't have to have our pc at home up and running all the time just to have a shop up. I'll also get more things done because I won't be checking to see if I've sold/bought anything. So an OPTION to be able to have a shop up while disconnected from the game would be nice.
some of us leave our computers on 24/7... so, no difference.
Tell you what, Turn off all your appliances, your alarm clock, hell turn your tv off at the switch, and u have already saved more energy than your computer!
agree. this should be solved.

I don't see how this is implementable.

Ye, L2 or no L2, all the comps are still running 24/7.

If you think your computer is so bad, then stop also using cars, airplanes, metros, buses and go everywhere on foot or bike. You'll save alot more energy that way, and might get into a bit better shape too.
I agree with the “save energy” idea to whatever fraction of our life refers to (l2 or not),

“Being able to interact in the world of l2 without being online ---> daydreaming”

Lore of NCSOFT,
saga of the “A Standard PlayNC Code (20 digits) Gamecard”
and of the “The wizard that used Credit card’s”

The protection of the environment is something not to be taken lightly.

It' not just about saving energy, it's about avoiding unnecessary waste. While you might save more energy by not using your car, or what have you, it's still wasteful to leave L2 running.

While some may leave their computers running all day, does it not consume alot more power when there's a graphic intensive program running? At least it seems to be the case with laptops and battery life. Though i've no idea how if it is still the case when the program is minimised (ie; is the processor still working on the graphics?).

I'd like to see the option to log out while leaving your shop behind. I've been disconnected before while my avatar remains in the game, so would it not be possible to leave the avatar in game for a long period, while in shop mode. If people are worried about the congestion that could pop up in towns, set a limit of a few hours on it even.

EDIT IN: Also, for those that do leave their shops open - don't forget to log 'em out about 5pm-7pm at least. These are peak usage times (where i'm from anyway), so this is when you'll be doing the most impact.

I've gotten a PM from a forum member telling me that if you minimise while in windowed mode, the processor wont be used as much for Lineage. This saved a little power... don't forget to turn off your monitor too. =]

I'd like to see NCsoft do an environmental impact study... though it'd be a cold day in hell before that happens. Even details on how many people are logged in in shop mode, to get an idea of the energy usage due that that. ^_^
NCSoft has been pretty horrendously irresponsible in this aspect. Its gotten worse too, the newest generation of graphics cards have evil power consumption even while idling. Power supplies on gaming computers have gone from 400 W is plenty to 600+ W today. Minimizing the game will reduce power consumption by the processor thanks to Intel/AMD's work, but your nvidia/ati card will still be draining the electricity.

Its too late for L2 to do much to change the game in this way. The coding would take years (remember that server transfers are Soon (tm) ), and it would dramatically alter the market place (tons of extra shops). But I hope that NCSoft at least considers it in the future on their newer products.

LOL

Tell you what, Turn off all your appliances, your alarm clock, hell turn your tv off at the switch, and u have already saved more energy than your computer!

or do both (and go by bike instead of car) and you get double the reward ;)

That said I think it's the responsibility of the consumers, not that of NC or any company for that matter. I find it a bit odd stance to tell NC he's a bad boy for not thinking of power while you can just decide not to put up an AFK shop and instead shut down the PC. It's very easy to put blaim on someone else. A good world starts with yourself, not with "the other".

Your statement would be true, if it wasnt for the fact it singles out conscientious consumers from "teenagers that don't care". In other words people who want to look after the environment are 'forced' to have a disadvantage (in terms of not using shops while not grinding) compared to people who don't care one bit about the environment, or their own electric bills cus their mom or dad does that.

Do you own a car? Do you have an air conditioner on during summer at home? Do you use gas to cook, oil to warm up your house?

It's really easy to ride on the high horse and brand everyone disagreeing with you as teenagers or people who dont pay their own bills.

So, if you own a car, me having 10 computers on 24/7 is still a smaller stress for the enviroment, which means that the one we should be glaring at is you. I bet we could also look at your other electric machinery, check how energy friendly they are. Check how well your house is insulated and see how much energy goes to waste.

PS. if you care so much, why do you even own a computer?
I have a solution to the environmental impact of AFK shops in L2. I will volunteer to sell everyone’s items on consignment. Just give me all your items and the price at which you want them sold. My selfless devotion to the L2 community should allow for tens of thousands of computers to be shut off.

You have to think anyway, so why not think big? - Donald Trump

Turning your computer off lets the terrorists win.

LOL for real that's funny.
My personal plan, not being particularly green, is to leave my afk shop open while you all do other things and close your client. Let me know when that is going to start! (lol).

No. Don't even do it. I didn't try to convince anyone of my view or call anyone a name so just resist the urge (lol).
It won't do any good anyway.

As for 'some other way to buy/sell without leaving computer client running'.....I'd tend to sign that cause it would increase #'s of shops and economic activity as many players don't do afk shops cause they are unable to leave their comp on. If there was some way to get more folks doing buy/sell shops I'd be for that.

Not because it has anything to do with the earth. The earth will be just fine.
Way LOL.

HIeverybody for President!
These are some previous things I saw before on the environmentalist arguements which I can't believe I sat and watched

ride to work on your bike and hide from your boss everytime your 2hours late lol,

turn off the oven and cook your food with a campfire in the front lawn

try to pass college by handing in a 10 pages filled with boxes and drawings to cover for a powerpoint

try to carry 30+ bags from a supermarket on foot walking 2miles to and from the store

lite a fire in your room in the winter to keep warm overnight

run in a security tightened factory screaming about pollution and power chaos

Join the EPA and try to make a living????I dont get this one..

and some others I forgot...
I use public transport, I switch off TV, I don't let heater at full power, I don't have air conditioner, etc.
All what is reasonnably easy to take care of, I do. Leaving PC on... I'm not a P2P user, I don't have a webserver or w/e needs to be up 24/7. If you do, I understand. But I don't. L2 shouldn't encourage me to do it.
Those saying you're not forced to do the buy low/sell high dance, the % craft poker or the OE lottery are either noobs who'll find excuse to be in B-Grade at lvl 7X and believe S-Grade and OEd stuff is for eBayers or they are high level hypocrites or eBayers.

Secondly, I'm not thinking about an auction system, but like others said, I'd like an option to let the character in shop mode online while logging off. Technically it's easy. When the server checks if the client is still connected, you add a condition : if the character is in private shop, you don't disconnect it. That would even disconnect the character when it bought/sold all its wares.
If you choose disconnect your character at log off, it first removes the shop state and it'll disconnect normally.
Easier to code than a lot of useless craps we got recently.

And I would like to add that for people having their PC in their bedroom... it would be a great solution too.
EDIT: Forgot to add that I can't even let L2 running on shop mode while browsing stuff on internet because Gameguard kills my internets.

NCsoft has to give players the opportunity to make effort and save energy (and money), then you'll be able to say it's players responsability to take it or not. Right now, there's no opportunity, NCsoft is responsable of encouraging that behavior.

Anyway thank you for your support! <3
The primary idea is a good one, and it has actually been suggested a few times before. I personally dont just like how ppl start this holy crusade while being as guilty as the next person.

Best post in this thread. Not the most thought provoking mind you...but the best post just the same.

The most sound logic in this thread. Yes, offline shops won't happen in L2 since NCsoft is so unbelievably slow and unresponsive but it is a good idea. Why?

1. Every little bit helps when it comes to reducing pointless energy consumption.

2. It's just absurdly annoying to run my PC over the night just in the hopes that someone might buy something. Is anyone putting a gun to my head to keep my PC on? No, but that's a ludicrous argument. Sell shops are how you sell items and keeping your sell shop up as long as possible increases your chance of offloading those items. This is not brain surgery folks, quit acting stupid. Washtak had a good idea, and intentionally muddying the argument with pointless comparisons is not helping illuminate the issue.

Glory be to Allah.

Nope, no car, I choose to get lifts and/or use public transport. Also, our house is very efficently sealed to retain heat.
As for your computer comment, I hardly think it has any grounds.

The primary idea is a good one, and it has actually been suggested a few times before. I personally dont just like how ppl start this holy crusade while being as guilty as the next person.

Some people choose not to try and save energy/environment, I do, but why does that automatically mean I'm on a "holy crusade" when it comes to the environment. All I'm doing is talking about a demographic that is blatently the worst at energy conservation. People who don't conserve energy/reduce emissions sure arent helping, but I'm not sitting here calling them names for it. It would help if more people reduced their own footprint, its not about some people being labelled bad because they don't want to - this is about people who want to, being able to without the perceived penalty of not being able to trade outside of 'grind time'.
This is just one game out of many, one activity of millions and any change NCSoft made to the game or how we play it would be a miniscule drop in the bucket. I have long thought a auction system is long over due. However, using the cry to help save the earth is so over the top I assumed they were joking. Just play the game and turn off your computer when you finish, if that is what you want to do.

It is way too late to save the earth, the end has already begun and we are doomed.
Turn the lights off when you leave a room, turn the T.V. off when you leave the room, go outside more often, take a daily jog, go out with some friends, talk on the phone less often, limit your driving, skip hybrid cars, don't leave the water running, simple things goes for big results.

So you miraculously forgot those comments about teenagers and daddy paying the energy bill? You're not even noticing it anymore, eh? You _cannot_ know what we do or do not to help and assuming we dont care just based on the fact that we keep a computer on 24/7 is ridiculous. Crusade more, please. Call the ISPs that they should take their servers offline during the night to lessen emissions.

Do you think it is an important topic or unbalanceable classes dilemna is the only problem devs should care?

NCsoft doesnt care.

Yeah I really don't see the reason why NCsoft should have to implement announcements about saving power and trees and going vegetarian, etc.
No, they shouldn't. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't make their game more eco (and user) friendly.
"Blah, blah, NCsoft doesn't care, so shut up and don't complain."

And I would like to add that for people having their PC in their bedroom... it would be a great solution too

By all means do that if you don't value your health. You do realize a PC (and other electrical allpliances with a large power supply) emits ozon, carbion dioxide and even worse: carbon monoxide? The latter is a reason some people die in the winter months due to having no ventilation at all (carbon monoxide due to a bad powersupply/other electrical parts). Last week a few people died in my country due to that, so its fresh in the news here now (The Netherlands).

This would all be fine if you ventilate the room properly, but I doubt many geeks do.

Oil ressources decreasing, everyday life prices going up, global warming, we are doomed!

Ya pretty much lost me right there.

Like the idea of more economic activity.
It's not an issue related to so-called man made global warming.

Mankind certainly should take care of the environment. We shouldn't pollute--we shouldn't waste--those things are stupid in their own right.

Mankind heating the globe? That's not gonna stand up to data really quickly here (lol).

Geore Orwell, call your office!
i saw fightgirl made a wtb / wts thread in the forums ... problem solved? well at least for us forums browsers.

Mankind heating the globe? That's not gonna stand up to data really quickly here (lol).

Geore Orwell, call your office!

At least the OP is in good company.

From the Economist (conservative)

Previous changes in the world's climate have been set off by variations either in the angle of the Earth's rotation or in its distance from the sun. This time there is another factor involved: man-made “greenhouse gases”....Since that IPCC report five years ago, the science has tended to confirm the idea that something serious is happening.

From the New York Times (liberal)

The addition of that single word "very" did more than reflect mounting scientific evidence that the release of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases from smokestacks, tailpipes and burning forests has played a central role in raising the average surface temperature of the earth by more than 1 degree Fahrenheit since 1900.

From Science (leading peer-reviewed scientific journal)

An international climate assessment finds for the first time that humans are altering their world and the life in it by altering climate; looking ahead, global warming's impacts will only worsen.

From Nature (another leading peer reviewed scientific journal)

The current understanding of anticipated climate change and its effect on ecosystems and societies, uncertainties and all, is not anecdotal. Rather, it is articulated explicitly as a consensus view of a world-wide community of researchers.

So, the data is just fine for the OP, he's in good company. No need to call Orwell. We have plenty of scientists here on the forums to correct you.
Take all this global warming propaganda and soap box chit chat here (http://www.globalwarmingforums.com/default.asp) and get back on the topic. NCSoft can not save the world, stop global warming or prevent carbon monoxide from killing geeks in poorly ventilated rooms.

Get back in game and play! Stop all these pretentious posts about fixing what mankind has ruined over the last thousand years. Can we all say too little too late?
Global warming...
I joined a group on Facebook called "I Support Global Warming" :D
Here's an edited version of the presentation of this group:

1. I love warm weather.
2. I would love to have beach-front property.
3. Who likes New York City anyway.
4. Finaly if I ever became so big a hippy [censored] that I started careing I would shoot myself.

:p
The first line of my first message was a humouristic catchline, not a propaganda to push people to go on crusade.
Stop exagerating it. Yeah sure people look smart when saying "I know for a fact that global warming isn't linked blah blah blah", or "L2 is a drop in the ocean of bloh bloh bloh".

Still, there are many reasons not to have a computer on 24/7. And the only argument against it worth mentionning was: more people would place their shops, so market places would be more crowded. And I must that's true. On most populated servers Giran would be even more filled with characters and the display of these characters would cause some lag. However I don't think it would reach proportions that would make it unplayable.

For those not knowing how it would be possible, here's an explanation. As you can already notice, when you crash, your character stays about 30 seconds before vanishing. That means the server regularily checks if the client behind your character answered in the last 30 seconds. If not, the character goes out.
At this moment, you can add a condition: if the character is in private shop, let it there.
Also, in that case at login you would get "Your account is already connected" and that would causes the character to log off. There again it would be easy to add a condition: if the character already logged is in shop mode, ask the player if he/she wants to log on directly with this character (so it wouldn't interrupt the shop).

On rather unrelated note, it would be interresting to ponder why you hate hippies. How comes such a popular movement became a shame?

We shouldn't pollute

Maybe those interested should begin with not polluting the forum? :D
In the name of Grazzt, I demand the implementation of this huge improvement.

I love that
I think they sould have set up a auction system long ago.. you place item into the system put a minimun bid in and a sell out .. how long you want the item up for auction... etc.. if item doesnt sell you simply get it back with a percentage process fee of adena.. Hey it works for World of Warcraft.. I agree totally that the present method isnt very green at all..
why would u put this post up? this is such a dumb topic. There's more to worry bout then computer usage
DPs, [censored].... Yeah, world peace and none hunger are top priority eh... But you always gotta start somewhere, this is a very good topic.
no it isn't [censored] ****
People with your attitude is what makes the world go almost nowhere in its attempt to save the world.

"Nah dont do this, it isnt the best choice in saving the world."
2 years later
"Oh ****, I forgot to buy that rainforest.. ah well, Ill do it tomorrow."

...
Screw the Earth. My computer needs more power (24/7)!!
Okay explain to me seriously how using electricity damages the environment. It's understandable that you can save power (and your own power bill) by turning off your computer, but I don't understand the environment aspect. Clean sources supply electricity anyway don't they?

The original poster didn't say anything about the environment, the second poster did. And here and there it's been thrown around. If there IS a harmful environmental effect somewhere on the chain I'd like to know. Otherwise, I see energy usage as something that's entirely up to the individual. Unless electric companies seriously aren't able to produce enough, I don't see any point on limiting usage.
Do I have to spell it out...

*Electrical companies produce energy
*The biggest contributor of energy is coal
*Under the process of making energy from coal, badass stuff is released which harms the environment

*Offline shop system implemented = less people having comp online 24/7
*Less energy being used (small piece, but everything matters)
*Less pollution of the environment

Adding to that, its a really cheap and quick [censored] thing to implement by the devs.

So yes, its a good idea.
 you right nightfox. . . imma buy me a solar powered computer and save the Earth from destruction of burning coal!!!
Stop playing comp games and get an education, and you might know what Im talking about. :)
I havn't touched L2 since the end of August so i'm pretty sure you play more comp games than me. i'm just going on here to kill the enviornment thats all

i'm sorry i didn't want/need to go to college. . . i'm over seas right now in the U.S. Marine Corps doing security. . .back in the states i'm a helicopter mechanic for the CH-53E (it's worse than a computer to the enviornment). . . .doesn't really seem like I need an education to bring in more money I'm perfectly fine right now, always will be. . . . .what do you do for a job?
Hehe, that explains alot... I dont wanna chit chat with you, so do your thing and have fun or whatever.
Just think about a larger picture the next time and dont flame (without any real reason) perfectly valid and good points.

"CH-53E (it's worse than a computer to the enviornment)"

Oh my, really?
Well quite literally I asked you to spell it out. Coal did not come to mind for me as a still major producer for electricity. And if that's the case the answer is quite simply the already desired change from fossil fuels to clean energies, not cutting off your computer and hoping you use less.

And in any case, say you're locally supplied by a hydro-electric dam? Is there still coal-powered electricity coming through as well?
Nerukan, sorry, I didnt read your post, my answer was aimed at DPS.

Yes, coal is still by far the largest contributor of energy in the world. And there really isnt any clean kind of energy being produced.

Water, requires that you destroy the biological buildup in the surrounding area. It isnt that harmful if its planned correctly, but it still messes up.

Wind, very good source of energy, though alot of people complain about the noise, also requires good planning to be of no annoyance.

Nuclear, far from being clean, the nuclear waste is still and has always been a huge factor.

Natural gas (biogas), Im a bit busy atm, making dinner, but I can check it up fully so Im not just guessing, but Im pretty confident it has some parts of it that isnt clean.

And yes, I doubt the electrical companies would produce less energy just because some peopel turned their comps off during the nights. But it´s something... Much better than nothing.
There is solar too.

When I went to the Florida Keys (the islands that stretch out towards Cuba), I lived in a completely solar-powered home for a weekend. Was a really great experience, because the sun shines so strongly there that there was plenty of energy for the house all day and through the night. Fans were running all the time and windows were completely open to let in the breeze to cool the place down.

But whether it could keep up with the demands of a computer down there I don't know.

Your comment inspired me to find this page for my state: http://www.energy.sc.gov/news.aspx?id=42

Environmental issues are growing in popularity; it's only a matter of time before the technology shifts all the way
/Signed.

I cannot help laughing at the people who questions the environmetal effects of using electricity in 2008. You must be from the great country in the west, (no country mentioned) no one else is that un-informed.

Also, to those who say that one should sit in shop mode instead of playing when you are at the comp.

-Are you asking people to actually sit and actively do nothing?
(which brings my thoughts back to McDonalds-land)
You all know that if you want to sell something you do it when you aren't at the comp, or atleast not able to play for the moment. Or you jave a second account devoted to do the selling part while you play your first.

In which case you aren't exactly saving money either.
So this whole idea is perfectly good from this point of view.
Im glad I made you inspired :)

Though
"Environmental issues are growing in popularity"
This has been THE question and issues for around 10 years now.
At least in the rest of the enlightened world except the McDonalds land (sorry if I insult you, but its a fact...).

Far as solar power goes, **** nice energy source, it just isnt that effective sadly, same with wind. But its still good, and worth using at alot of places. I know one place up here in sweden that saves around 40% on their electric bill thanks to solar power.

That solar powered place sounds nice =) Id love that warm climate :S

McDonalds land

haha, it's catching on.
About wind energy. The land area where you place them must be completely flat for them to be of any good use, that's why they are not so common in Sweden for example.
But in Denmark you see them everywhere.
I don't see why you don't go out and say the name.

Stop being so arrogant. You should be happy environmental issues have caught on in the U.S. And it's not like it came out of no where. It HAS been growing the last 10 years as well. As a person who's going through education in that time I can tell you there's plenty of random articles that cover a concern over the environment. Even this incredibly low level "Health" requirement I have to get through covers Environment as part of your own personal health. If you don't know how it is over here, then don't speak about it. Actions on the international diplomatic level don't tell you anything about the mentality of a people.

I'd say it's really that attitude that turns Americans off from caring.
There are many a reason to be able to keep the private shop on while offline. Being forced to leave the PC on is absurd. Just try not to be ridiculous explaining to another gamer how the system works. :/

There are players who already did the maths. It's cheaper to ebay. How can you have some credibility with that?

So, is NCsoft ready to take the right direction, at least one step to a better gaming experience?
Come on, there's no good in being different as a bad example.

NB: If Gameguard would stop killing my internet browsers, I could make a private shop when I'm in front of my computer and do something else.

Wind, very good source of energy, though alot of people complain about the noise, also requires good planning to be of no annoyance.

At least in most of Germany, the mills simply don't make the energy they cost to produce back. It may sound clean (just like solar) but unless things changed massively in the past few years, often the "clean" energies are powered underneath by nuclear or fossile-produced electricity: Production of the units, maintenance (say hi to the specialist teams driving all over the country to fix unknown problems in ... cars!), and probably more things I can't think about.

To summarise the whole thing up, the good reasons for allowing offline sellshops are:
- It does not tamper with the economy.
- It does not tamper with the money advantage that legit little-players have over legit much-players (there is no point in debating the others).
- It saves traffic (no need to send all of equipments and chat in Giran to someone who won't see it anyway) - quite a lot when distributed across all sellstores.

The problem, is, of course with the implementation. There is currently no mechanism in game that supports the presence of a player character without an active connection. Depending on how well (or badly, in the case of L2's server) software is designed, adding this type of thing could be pretty bloody complicated.

PS: It's cheaper to powerlevel than to pay for your account in some instances, depending on how much you play. That can and should not be part of the arguement.

There are many a reason to be able to keep the private shop on while offline.

Prediction: This will never happen in the lifetime of L2. Mark my words.

I curse you!
Why him, not NC? He's just saying it. :p

Curse me in French, then. It'd probably sound really cool!
I agree this would be a great idea.
