Since most of us certainly do not like the current process of changing a character's name, maybe giving suggestions on a different process rather than just complaining about it may get NCSoft to change it (keyword: may).
I read somewhere that Mistryl suggested we say, "I don't like this and here's why," rather than, "This blows." So now that we're finished [censored] and complaining, maybe it's time we come up with something a bit more constructive, hence, this post.
While I don't have any suggestions on what NCSoft should do, I know what they shouldn't do: use the current Name Change process.
So, NCSoft, I do not like the current name change process because I have a full account, and I do not wish to sacrifice a 55+ character to change the name of a different character.

they won't change it just because it might be flawed, unless you can suggest a better way with less drawbacks.
Personally I think It's perfectly fair to ask for a character with the name to be present. to make sure you don't take a name and someone else already has it the next tuesday.

Any changes made will be made only if its done on the Korean servers. You have a better chance of being heard by learning Korean, getting an account on the Korean server, and then posting on the Korean forums.

Unless Korea adopts a different process you are wasting your time. People haven't learnt this lesson by now?
Korean servers don't need the change because Korea NCSoft gave two extra slots to all Korean accounts. If the name change process is the same in Korea, then it makes sense.
NA NCSoft refused to give two extra slots, so to some, this process doesn't make sense. Why have this process if NA NCSoft doesn't have the courtesy to add at least one extra slot?
Well I would think a method like this would work a bit better. But I guess more working to do in their office so no luck on that.
a) Pay for name service
b) Email them with the name you want and some alternatives if you like any alternative. Make a list like 1st)Spirelota if that exists try 2nd) spirel0ta and so on..
c) They hook up the name you chose. Do the name change next tuesday. If all names are taken mail you back to try with more names or get your money back.
This is what I think would be better for the players.
Well, there is another extremely popular (and eye "bleedingly colorful) game that does it thusly:
1, Log into account
2, Select the server
3, Select the character
4, You then get two boxes, one to type in the new character name and a second to verify the name
5, you then get a screen with all the cool disclaimers and you type in "I agree". Keep in mind that there is info that indicates how long one has to wait.
6, put in your credit card info and that's it. If the name is taken you get the name screen again but with a notice that it is unavailable.
I realize people might hate all that simplicity but why not do it this way? ;)
Suggestion :
- You log on PlayNC website and ask for name change.
- You enter your credit card blah blah.
- You choose the character you want to change and you choose a name.
- The website checks if the name is available.
- If it's available, NCsoft NA, with all its majesty and brilliance, reserves the name to have it available during the next maintenance.
- During the maintenance, instead of copying character's data to the new lvl 1 character with the new name, just change the parameter Name.

It is a asinine way of doing name changes, having to reserve the name and wait till downtime before any changes can be made. However, the way the database is accessed prohibits any other method from working. Player names cannot be changed on the fly until a complete server reboot is performed. Its just the way it works.

Agreed. I think what should be applied if a toon slot is needed, is just a name change slot for a toon (a blank silloutte [sp] of a toon). It can't be used as an active toon. Its only purpose is for the name change. If a player changes a name and is updated on tuesday, the toon sits down like its being deleted and the timer counts down (for that account) until you can change the name again.
When the time is done, the toon stands again allowing another name change.
I've only been playing for 6 months so I have extra slots. I dont plan on changing my names. If they are going to keep these steps, thats the course they should take for the loyal players that have been with them for years.

Evidently the easiest way to get a name change is have a bunch of people petition the name as offensive, even if the name is completely a normal name, the GM's will change it for free.
