Well the ingame announcement said 3 hours ... besides, afaik they kick them with servers up, i doubt they need to bring down all servers to ban some farmers on Erica :p

I got my alt clan leadership transfered to a new char during this small downtime...better than waiting until thirsday to get that char out of the alt clan and in in an academy for rep points :p
Well i think they are taking care and banning accounts so other users could transfer to overloaded servers.

Either that or they were trying to stop the cross-server adena trades. But unless they track the adena to where farmers store them, accounts not botted, then it won't make much of a ripple but a slight inconvience to farmers. I heard there were a lot of naked bots in Goddard on Hinde on the night in question. I guess they got banned but did not get d/c and the farmer got the ban letter so he was stripping his toons.
They must be completely insane now over at NCsoft : While in middle of a fight with number of foes I got message saying "30 seconds to exit game , find a place to SAFELY logout " , mind you: no prior warning or anything like that when logging in , just poof .
You already know that when you log back in now , you'll be DEAD , 30 seconds is hardly sufficient time to go to any safe place .
suggestion : Put up a notice at login screen when you plan to do unannounced - i.e. : not at regular and scheduled times - maintenance so that folks know what to expect.
add to that: no mentioning of all these irregular downtimes on the one page where you'd expect to find them : "server maintenance page " .
you should give prior notice of this stuff ( a 15 minute warning would suffice ) and then update your own server maintenance page as to inform folks of what is going on . This is a fee based game , you can at the very least expect to be informed about any - either planned or unplannned - interruption of service .
I have played a large number of MMO's and this is the only one which doesn't give any prior notice whatsoever ( 30 second warning isn't a prior notice, it's a farce ) .
And to whoever said that they didn't give any notice before the "Exit in 30 seconds" warning, they did. If you didn't pay attention to the blue words on your screen... doesn't mean that they weren't there.

The whole point of posting an announcement is to make sure everyone is prepared for what is coming , right ?
Posting an announcement and then stop posting it at a certain time just doesn't cut it . Nearly all MMO's out there have a box/window at loginscreen ( LOTRO,EVE,WOW,Guild Wars etc. ) where any scheduled or unscheduled maintenance is announced . That box is visible regardless of when you login.
In addition to this all of those MMO's post any info on scheduled or unscheduled maintenance on the "server maintenance " - page . Last couple of days we have seen servers go down without any mention of this on the server maintenance page ( making me wonder what the point is of even having that page ) .
I wouldn't care at all if this game was subscription-less but it isn't , we pay to play this game and to see guildwars ( which has no fee ) announces maintenance better than LII doesn't do much to change my view on this issue .

But you made it sound like there wasn't any announcement in Gustin, and that's what I was trying to say. The announcement was there, the fact that people logged in after the announcement was sent is another story.

There were no announcements (except that last "momentarily" one) on Hindemith for both my accounts, both this and the previous shutdown times. And yes, they were both logged for hours, and yes, I scrolled up the message logs (to see what was sold/bought before shutdown, and what happened in clan chat).
Please be advised we are gonna ban all the bots and third party program users this weekend. Sorry for the inconvience this may cause.

Some might be clan leader changes so the old clan leaders can move servers. It is just annoying to return and find my shops closed since who knows when.
There was NO announcement in Gustin, MissB, trust me. My Dwarf was in town and never read anything except the "Server will go down momentarily" -- although momentarily in that case meant something like 10-15 minutes later.
They banned a lot of these chinese farmers last week.
My guess is ncsoft did the server restart to disconnect them.
If the farmers hadn't been disconnected, how did you know that they'd been banned? Do you have indsider information?
My guess (and that's all we can do) is that it's transfer related and they've done it to process all the clan leader and hero status change requests in preparation for the next 8 hour server-transfer downtime on Tuesday. That said, communicating with your customers wouldn't be a bad idea. But I assume Alyra isn't working today and "techies" consider posting on a forum to be a lesser chore that is, quite frankly, beneath them. :p
