What benefit would a Gladiator get by using Light Armor? I know they do get light armor masteries but why would they sacrifice more def for Light Armor?
Currently there is nothing tbh. The bonusses of heavy outweight the ones from the light by far. Maybe if you are lvl 80 and you are fighting 70ish people I would think about it, but even then Heavy is better.
Unless they give the same passives as tyrants get for Light armor for every other warrior, there is no single point imo.

I had this idea that if you group and have a tank in group, Light Armor would make you attack faster or something. But I guess I was wrong!
The only light armor worth considering is Draconic Leather Armor.
The p.def is around the same as Tallum Heavy which many gladiators and duelists like to use, especially if it is beyond their means to obtain IC heavy and it gives just about the same atk.speed boost and additional MP which is always nice. Then again if you can afford Drac you can afford IC heavy which makes my point about Drac somewhat redundant. Unless of course your main or sub is an s grade light armor user such as an archer or dagger then you could get away with having 1 set of armor.
Truth of the matter is that as has already been said heavy just gives so many more benefits over light. The thing about LA is that I think it gives a higher % boost in p.def from masteries and using LA than heavy does with heavy masteries. However the difference in p.def between light armors and heavy armors is too great for that to make any kind of difference.
Are you talking about a low level glad or a high level glad?
For leveling through c-grade, plated leather is definitely the best set. I've heard arguments of BW heavy vs. plated leather for b-grade. I think most people I've seen agree that plated leather is better.

For A-grade+ (and pvp) you want to go heavy.
Why is Plated Leather better, might I ask?
The set bonus is pretty sweet.
+4STR and only giving up -1CON
Plenty of dd power without losing much hp/weight limit/stun resist.
Already talked about in detail here and the only reason I wear light armor is because my main is a Dagger and I don't PVP but I do like the heavy better on Glad at higher lvls. ;)
