How long I would say a good 8 Years is left in it.
1. Lineage II is the Best PVP game.
2. Lineage II is the best HardCore Game.
3. Lineage II at this time has the Best Graphics.
4. After CT1.5 Hits I Think Over All Lineage II will have a Lot fun things 2 do Besides the Grind and go Fishing.
And we have CT2 Coming in 2008 so yea Think Lineage II will be around for a while. Yea a lot of People are leaving but 1/4 of them at least comes back.
They find a way kill private servers and a lot more will come back. Hate Private Server >< Lost many friends to that crap.
As for AION.........
Lineage 2 Will be my Last MMO. I Plan on starting a family in the next few years and won't have time 2 start a new game so I'm Here till they turn off the Power on Lionna Server and sell it on ebay :D
This game has quite a few years left in it from the player's end. Now if NcSoft goes belly up, well, that can't be helped. They have promised 12 chronicles / updates and we are only on number 6 and with the history of Lineage 1, they are still updating that game and it is going on close to 10 or so years I believe.
Just been announced on the Korean Lineage site for Summer of '08. Which means we may see it here by Turkey Day '08 baring problems....
Much better than the C1.5 update, but since it seems we are going to be forced to have that one to get to something wicked, well, sometimes you have to remove the **** instead of just killing the flies over and over.
There are better MMO's out there. I could go down the list of which games and why but for once I can honestly say, without being hyperbolic, that no one really wants to see that list and it's so long that my fingers wouldn't want to type it. That being said, L2 fills a void that no other MMO really fills: high fantasty(elves, magic, etc.) with meaningful PVP.
In my mind, the type of PVP that L2's designers embraced kept it from gaining more traction with mainstream MMO gamers will keep it viable for years to come. It's only real competition might be Age of Conan, but I simply don't know enough specifics about that games PVP system to draw any long term conclusions. WoW? Warhmmer? While successful and poised for success they are apples and oranges when compared to L2 so despite their popularity I haven't and don't see either of those games ever being what will kill L2.
When someone does what L2 does...but better, then there will be significant survival issues. Most games are completely different though so it's not an issue. L2's life span? Meh, 4-5 years if no one steps in and tries to take their cookie.
Jacent, so you're saying that you know tons of MMO's that is better than Lineage 2, even though they gameplay wise can't be compared, there is _NO_ other MMO you can mention is better than L2. Even WoW (Not high fantasy!? Guess the ugly graphics is the reason buahaha) can't be compared.
Your conclusion should be: Lineage 2 is the best MMO in it's field.

The problem with L2 is that it's not designed for us lazy Euros and US players (read: Have a real life too). I think this game will live on a few years until after Lineage 3 is released in 2-3 years time. So 4-6 years of L2 to go I'd imagine.
Now we can discuss how we can define "life span", is it still alive when there's only a few hundred, maybe thousand players left on one server in 7 years? Sure it is, will anyone care? Hell no! Thus I'd say it's undead.. like so many other MMOs that still have a few players left, like Lineage 1! To those people I bet it's still great, to each his/hers own. Most people will have moved on to bigger and better things.
Honestly I don't think Age of Conan will eat a huge chunk out of L2 and WoW, it will (hopefully) get more people into MMO's with it's gritty (amazing I might add) realistic graphics and gameplay that sounds a lot like L2's with sieges and PVP. I'll try it, and hoping to Crom and Mitra that it's good enough for me to convert from L2 so I can stop whining about imbalances and ******ed korean developers..

The problem withe the lineage 2 developers are that they have no consistant vision. They add stuff then doing "somethnig else" but the old stuff seems to have no place anymore.
Bad skills, outdated hunting areas, etc.
They don't have good follow through or attention to detail. They just add without any thought to what has gone before.
Beautiful art design, incredible fighting animation (I was comparing my LOTRO character with a 2 handed sword to my L2 sub with 2 handed sword and it's clear that the L2 devs know how to animate their characters!)
However the lead designer needs to get a clue. I'm tired of patch work design. They need to have a consistant idea of how the game progresses from lvl 1 to lvl 90 (or whatever the future holds).
They can't just keep adding stuff without thinking of new players, existing players, etc.
So sure, I'd love to see Gracia. But what about all the parts of the world that have come before? As of now if you go to these areas they are devoid of anything. Anyone who was around during prelude will tell you that the world was so full of life. And it was scary back then! there was a sense of "hey, I could get wasted if I'm not careful".
But now it's more open world with nothing. Players (myself included) zipping around from gatekeeper to gatekeeper.
The Dev's need to start paying attention to details. Just my opinion but I feel that good design is good design and not just adding stuff as you think of it.
the world needs to make massive changes to keep it working well..
it's VERY irritating to run through some of the good ol areas.. and find no person.... no monster.. no nothing that used to be there at all... There are full blown areas that are completely ignored.. never touched.. or seen ever. EVER....
if they keep expanding the maps... oventually it'll be rarely ever seeing any other player...
what they need to do is build some actually lineage systems.... destroy various parts of aden.. make them sink/disappear, fence them off..... something.. give a **** good reason why some of these new monsters are showing up.. and why the others are disappearing..
revamp readjust the quests....
The kamael class quest as a good example.... specially for the 2nd change quest.... a single simple quest..... redo it for all the other..
blow giran off the map.. destroy it..... build a new place..... create some rather epic dynamic systems to everything.. maybe if they can't do that.... then they'll have to just do all the static stuff themselves...
either way.... things HAVE to change.. i've made this statement before.... there are things in C2 that i thoroughly enjoyed... but i don't see any of those things anymore.. it's like we are back tracking in many cases.

You can fight inside clan. Can you fight inside your own faction freely?
Not in the manner you're meaning, no. It's not an open PvP-anywhere-all-the-time game... though, that being said, I have never had a problem finding people in the PvP maps at any time, day or night.

Thanks Jacent that really made laugh. Saddly though I agree with what you said. It must be very frustrating working for NCNA seeing what the players base is saying and complaining about and knowing there is nothing you can do about it.
I don't think this game's ever going to die, really.
That depends on your definition of death. I played L2 day in and day out right up to the time that the so-called service of server transfers came in. I tried a 10-day trial of another well known MMO and I haven't hit a single L2 mob since. Trust me, you CAN survive without L2 and you'll be a lot less frustrated into the bargain, whether by the game or it's (lack of) support.
This game will lose a lot of people without some form of server rationalisation and the risk is that if that itself is poorly handled then even that will fail. I can see L2 being down to 5 servers by this time next year (3 Euros and 2 NA), providing that NCNA pull their collective fingers out in time.

I was not using the term literally... well, actually if I had been using the term literally it would have meant "happiness". Anyway, I was using it (as it is quite commonly used) to mean "stupidness/dorkiness".

And the funny thing was that they weren't horrible singers to begin with... I saw on a TV show after they were busted, they didn't sing badly at all. Don't know why they made them lipsynch.
Oh, there are people who like 80's music. Heck, I even like some of it (much to the chagrin of my friends).
The problem with 80's music is that it is very unique and quite frankly is a bit of a backlash to 60's and especially 70's music.
That's what people forget. Nothing is in a vacuum. There is a reason why you have 60's music and even 50's music.
Heck, when my mother first heard "rock & roll" she thought it was a joke record.
80's music reflects the times for a lot of people. Given the clothes and movies it makes perfect and complete sense. And quite frankly it was a very very different time from today.

As far as being on topic, Lineage 2 will have a long lifespan. Heck, lineage is still going. At some point we might see mergers. And if they do merge then we will just have to accept (or move on) the decisions of NC Soft regarding castles and clan halls. It is what it is.
But as we can see, they will bring Gracia next. That is quite a large continent. So much more to come. Hopefully some of it will make sense. NC needs to realize that they now have competition from other pvp games coming out.
I never saw that movie (or Titanic or E.T.). There was nothing wrong with 80's music. Just like there was nothing wrong with 70's music. Even if disco was the "in thing" good stuff was definitely out there.
I have played many MMORPGs and I think if MMORPG experience is something to brag about in a resume, I'd get the best job out there. Still, I got one of the best jobs out there bowahahah.
I beta tested Lineage2 and played it for 1 month, then quit. I thought it was horrible for few main reasons:
1. Extremely slow leveling(back then, now it's MUCH faster)
2. Farmer/Bot encouraging enviornment. It encourages gold sellers because it's hard to play it without buying adena. You can, but it's hard. Unlike other games when buying more gold is only optional, I think buying gold in L2 gives the greatest boost of all the other games. Hence, it encourage farmer business. Also, its bot infested. The most bot infested game in human history and am not exaggerating.
So, I'm back now and problem 2 is still true. But problem 1 is sort of diminished. The introduction of the Catacombs and Necros added more variety to leveling.
I've played Miridian 59, Ultima Online, EverQuest, Anarchy Online, EVE online, EverQuest2, A Tale in the Desert, World of Warcraft, Dungeons and Dragons Online, GuildWars, Tabula Rasa, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Vanguard, and am sure I missed one. I have Maximum level characters of these games World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, and EverQuest. So, I didn't just play for 1-2 months I played them a lot. Those 3 games are the ones that hooked me real bad that I had multiple max level characters.
Lineage2 is not the best but it has something that no other game has. Read carefully what I say here it is very important for Lineage2 player to feel good about their game. Let's take WoW for an example. I played WoW since 2004 I was at max level very fast and the only progression I would do to my character was to Raid Onyxia(back then was the top target) then they introduced MC, BWL..etc
So, Raiding for hours and hours to only progress in GEAR. Now, all my spent time was spent on gearing up my char. So, here I am with a good 2 year experience in game wearing full epic gear feeling good that I accomplished something. But I saw a person who just joined the game and in 1 month hit level 60(was max back then) and raiding a few and voila he's in my league. Just 3 months experience.
The situation gets worse too. In the expansion they introduced level 70 and a new continent. But, to my amazement the Green Armor(not so good gear) was as good(if not better) as a RAID ONLY gear from the MAX LEVEL raid bosses. You could get this loot SOLO. So, imagine this. You've spent 3 years playing the game raiding for HOURS to get some decent gear. You wake up in the morning when the expansion was introduced and some one who just played reaches level 58 and gets to the new continent to solo and get a gear that is better than an average Epic Gear pre-expansion. So, lets say before the expansion I stopped playing and I came back after 2 months. In that time someone started from scratch. Soloed all his way to 60 and got that new Green Gear that drops in the expansion. I login after 2 months with all the hardwork I spent collecting this (pre-expansion) epic gear. I am Level 60 with my shiny armor and 3 years experience then I saw a newbie with a SOLO-GEAR that is better than mine!!!
See what I'm trying to get to?
In the other hand if I spent my time in Lineage2 I wouldn't even scratch the Max level that easy. Even if I did, I can do a subclass and get Noblesse and still there are many things to do to progress your character without being "trivial" in new chronicles. So, the idea of being rewarded and your spent time will not be reduced to useless in upcoming expansions makes the game more rewarding.
Lineage2 also have one of the best Character Model graphics. Lineage2 also have one of the most interesting class skills and diversity in classes. The skills are so beautiful.
Bad things about Lineage2 is the Mouse-Controlled gameplay I find it irritating. Server Problems, server performance is not so good and the Euro Servers are heavily populated. Should have 1-2 more EuroServers and 1 less USA server.
EDIT: Forgot to add my conclusion.
Conclusion: This game will not die, it has at least 8 years of a lifespan. It MIGHT get a heavy hit on population when PlayNC release Lineage3.
