I recently learned since coming back to Lineage 2 that being spammed is now something very real. On set intervals I will receive a message about how I can get epic gears in a convenient way only receiving the highest quality, sweetest and cheapest service. This sort of nonsense is starting to get on my nerves, in fact, it already has and as a result I am writing this post. No doubt is the 10 Day Trial that is floating around in combination with the Refer-A-Friend program to blame. My argument is simply that not many will drop $9.99 - $19.99 on a full game that will be banned in a few hours but signing up for a new account that is free, well that is a different story altogether. The irony of it all is the simple fact that NCNA Announcements almost always corresponds with the spamming. So while NCNA keep telling me not to bite that juicy Apple, F00610698 keeps PM me how wonderful life would be with epic gears. Something has to be done! Implementing a block for just PMs would be a start. This will not make the problem go away but it would show good intent from NCNAs side that you are doing something about this increasing nonsense.
Regardless, I am darn tired of this problem. Much like my own boss tells me when one of our servers go down at One Wilshire, just fix it!
funny story, my friends made a new char on bartz to check prices there, instantly got one before he logged into the new char like at blackscreen it was there when he got in :P
This is one of the new 'features' that I noticed since returning to the game. It's also the first time I've ever used the /block command since OB. Although, I've stopped using the block list after seeing a irate dwarf complain in shout that his block list wasn't big enough to stop the spam.
I don't really pay much attention to it because when I'm in town I'm usually concentrating on shopping or crafting.
it's ludicris to own your own game and program for it.. and are unable to PREVENT some other person or company from being able to do whatever they bloody well want from a remote location for advertising.... and for days on end before a new account manages to pop up outa nowhere.
Listen, canceling the refer-a-friend program is not going to end spam.
Ok, so no "friends" are referred. That doesn't stop the pros from just buying accounts and referring their co-workers *cough* friends.
And this is assuming that we are getting these pm's from "friends". It is equally plausible that they are coming from paid accounts.
And quite frankly any good company has a marketing department (well, maybe not NC but most others ;) ) and our 3rd party friends probably figure that buying accounts to spam players goes under marketing.
What next, ban everyone in a clan because one player in the clan cheats?
No that would be cruel. Just cancel clanwarehouse access, clanleveling, ability to upgrade clanskills, etc...
O right they allready do that, k ban um all then :P
So if its possible to see who reffered that PM advertiser i would say ban that paid account also.
So now you are completely responsible for any who plays the game because of you? I don't think so.
Refer-a-friend is a good idea. It just needs a bit of work. Don't punish an honest player (knowingly or not).
What next, ban everyone in a clan because one player in the clan cheats?
Well i think its easy to see if you refer a friend you might tell him a few things that are not allowed. You also may know him in real life or from other games to know his behavior.
If you have any doubts just dont refer him.
I think if someone with a paid acc refers people that do PM advertising ( not only once ) its no problem to ban him aswell.
I mean how long such PM advertising accounts live ? One or two days ? And if a paid account did refer 3 or more caught PM trial accounts then it is on purpose.

The thing is, unless you are with this person 100% of the time, you have absolutely no idea if they cheat or not. I can guarantee you that there is someone playing L2 right now that you are 100% sure is legit that really isn't.
People say, "can't be, I talking to them on vent all the time" and things like that. Doesn't matter. You can't know what other accounts or toons they have unless you're watching them 100% of the time.

So don't act like you know everyone you'd refer.
Exactly. Like... Oh, I don't know... let's look at Eliot Spitzer for example. Seemed like he was a good guy, fighting for the might and the right, Bible in one hand Sword in the other. And yet, though I spoke to him on
Vent all the time, I never would have guessed that he spent UP TO $80,000.00 ON CALL GIRLS!!!!
Of course they deduct it, and they don't care about paying 20 buck for an account that gets banned after one day of sending 50,000 spams.
These spam bots can message every player on a server in 10 min., then next server. They're not using a regular game bot, they have a spam bot that only spams. But fast.
I'm not sure what can be done to stop it but more action needs to be taked to restrict 3rd party programs and scripts from accessing data.
I know this thread is just concerns PMs but its all linked to the same 3rd party stuff and at the end of the day, its the genuine honest player that's at the disadvantage.

That is something for the Asian people to do. And I don't think they see Walker as a problem, Asian gaming mentality is so different from the western one it's ridiculous.

One of my goals was to bring the english speaking asian gaming community and the NA community into a spot where we can discuss stuff. As i felt that in doing so we could better understand each others views about the game. That and i feel if you want a change in the game you have to get the others side to help back your side. Face it we won't see something unless the other side also wants it.
I just don't know how to go about getting the other side to meet our side....

Two words: Peer Pressure.
They don't use Walker because their mentality about it is very different from ours. Koreans, especially the younger players, have much social prestige in their peer group riding on their accomplishments in their game of choice.
To be revealed as a cheater or someone who took the easy way out to get to the top? A loss of face no one wants to even consider, let alone engage in. By extension, their clans are known for their accomplishments, and to ruin the good name of your clan with actions frowned upon by the gaming community? Inconceivable.
That said, the Koreans seem to be less-competitive than Westerners when it comes to PvP. It seems that most of their fighting takes place in Oly or at Seiges and similar event-battles. Open field PvP almost never happens, and random ganking is, apparently, unheard of.
Also, given the Korean nature of MMO game-playing, that is, to sit in a large internet cafe with dozens of other people, all playing the same game, it is more likely that a true clan-support structure is in place, thus obliviating the need for adena-sellers, bots or Ebay.
Come on people be realistic. Real players don't invite friends who will use AQ012346 or SV043356 on an on as player names. It's mind numbingly obvious where these accounts are comming from and what they are here for. Every single MMO out that has a trial account program has this problem, either through PM's, chat or in game mail. Payed accounts don't advertise in PM's it is not cost effective. If it was they would have been doing it since the game went live. As long as there are free trials on live servers there will be this problem in some way or another. trial accounts should only have access to general chat. Friend's no matter how far apart they are form each other, can always find other ways to find each other in game. Once together general chat is more that enough to communicate in game. If you want more buy the game and pay for access.
This game has never had this problem to this degree until the free trials started. Something needs to be done, these advertisements turn more players away from the game than stay.

NCSoft could ban them for six monthes to a cheater server, where drop rates and xp would be 1/10th of normal server.

Dunno, I invite people who ask for it on Stratics, which prompted me to ask Alyra if it reflects in any way what the accounts actually do (was more aimed that they could be botting, ebaying, whatnot) and she said that actions of the trial account would in no way impact the real account.
Would already help if they added some decent blocking functions.
For example options for /allblock to still allow people on friendslist/clan/ally to pm while its on.
Or blocking all pms by keywords so you could just block the urls their spamming.
obviously you care to much of this phenomenon.
it doesn't make me feelings any negative.
you have to just ignore these message and don't use the services.
actually i can't understand, what is your problems?
 Try negotiate market stuff in PMs because it's most common way of trading (you seen those "WTS this, PM me", didn't you?) ... while being spammed every 30 seconds. That's one of those problems.

I think thats one of the problems right there. You should be responsible for the actions of whever you invite, while they are still in the trial period. Once it's over or the account is activated (payed account) then it would no longer be connected to you.

Yes thats exactly what i meant.
You should be responsible for the trial account for that 10 days its active. Thats why its called refer a friend and not refer a stranger.
I agree you cant know what the person is doin but if you refer a friend ( means you know that person ) it should be rare that this person starts PM advertisement.
So if the GM caught 3 trial accounts i think a 1 month ban of the paid acc should occur.

I would go farther than that
GM catch's trial account
1st time perm ban trial and 1 month for refurer.
2nd time perm ban trial and perm ban refurer.
Im sure any legit player that gets 1 month ban would think very hard before they ever invite another player.
