The just of it is NCsoft has partnered with Vivox -- a company that has been doing integrated voice communication for a while now so it seems.
It sounds like if this is used properly by NCsoft North America this could be truly revolutionary... not just to Lineage II, and not just to the various set of games under NCsoft's wings... but to the entire MMORPG industry. We'll have to see how it turns out.
The announcement from Vivox is exciting news and we want to clarify that this new voice chat technology will be used through the PlayNC Launcher and not directly through NCsoft games.
Rather does the launcher work with Lineage II? I would assume so but I've never even heard of it before
yes and no.
go down load exteal..it shows what games you have loaded on your system with the launcher. IE: Lineage2, lineage2 test server, exteal, guild wars, etc...

Integrated Voice Chat is already part of several MMO's.
Hardly revolutionary to the MMORPG industry :) (Heck, even integrated streaming radio stations are part of a few)
I think it would be revolutionary for true combat MMOs to use voice chat like Second Life has it. With Vent and Teamspeak private channels aren't revolutionary either, but public is what I see as more interesting.
Though I'd probably never use it and I can't help but cringe at the thought of listening to a "Hero Radio Channel" ><
If they didn't have a mute I think I'd kill myself :P

Tabula Rasa has voice chat.
it works as simply push the V button, speak. anyone in the vicinity with the sound on can hear you.
it can be disabled, and in TR tends to blurr too easily with the combat sounds and was a bit too poorly integrated for the taste of many.
i imagine in L2 it would would do the same. especially at lower levels where the system voice interferes with activity.
that and Vent/TS DO tend to be only useful for people who can actually SPEAK the language. several people can read, type, and listen to English but cant speak.

Darn, looks like we won't be able to hotchat a GM after sending out a petition. Hrm, kind of an option later to check if someone is really there if it ever gets put into the games.

It's not like English is the only language that can be spoken though.
I'm sure Devianne Greeks would just use the voice chat for Greek... as done with the hero chat

so, when they walk up to you speaking greek, what will you do? turn around and speak english?
what we need is those babelfish things from Hitchikers guide to the galaxy.
LOL im sure it's not going to be universal chat. So far all the MMO's I have played with voice integrated you still had to be in a party to use voice chat. If thats the case why would anyone stop using vent or team Speak where everyone with access can chat.
Actually, a lot of the games mentioned previously to this post as having voice chat, actually do not have the kind of voice chat Vivox has. The biggest difference, is that Vivox's voice chat is done outside the game (not built-in) and as such has its own servers, instead of using the game server. This makes the quality in the sound much better. (ie: WoW's voice chat, your using WoW's servers and thats why it sucks)

That actually makes it even worse in my opinion, as its not integrated voice chat.
Any chat client that is OUTSIDE the game, people wont use. They'll stick to Vent/TS which is light years better then anything some other company has to offer. (Specially Vent)
Not necessarily, vivox has a lot of features that Vent doesn't have, not to mention it would be provided for free and tied-in with the game. (So no need to set up servers, etc, yes the big clans do this but just regular parties can't always trade vent info every time its a new person, etc etc)
And having it on a separate server helps it sound better, also I play EVE online and they use vivox and it is built into the game, like you can just join the voice channel by clicking a button in-game and it works and all that. ^^
Heh, I know it sounds like I'm some promotional ad for Vivox, but I follow MMO news and Vivox is in the news a lot, really it is much better then anything existing (with possible exception to vent).

What features exactly does Voix have that Ventrilo does not?
It just seems a pretty stupid thing really. PUG's wont suddenly start using voice chat. It wont effect Guilds in the slightest.
Do you /really/ expect a Guild member to leave his Guild Vent to join a PUG's vent and miss important information/call to arms/etc?
........
Also to the other poster, yes they would have permission to record your voice chats.
They record your MSN conversations, so of course they'd recorder your voice.
Okay so Vivox would use it's own servers, and it probably wouldn't be "integrated" to the level that MSN is according to Alyra's first response about it being on PlayNC Launcher instead. But I still know nearly nothing about the PlayNC Launcher, mainly due to the Lineage department never bringing it up.
And would that even change with Vivox being activated on it?

lol you're saving my post here, so I'm grateful at least to have someone who knows more about it.

Hmm -- the analogy makes sense but it may not apply the same way, either due to the technology or the agreement between the companies
Now that I look at the features, and the fact they said it annihilates WoW's voice chat, this is starting to look pretty cool.
Oh yea and all the ppl who pretend to be female but are really a guy IRL (Like *insert famous person* on the Hindemith server) can use voice-masking so they can chat with their marks. ^^

Look at above post for features. ^^ And yes, I think I do expect guild members to join a PUGs voice chat because one of the features that vivox has is that you can call-in people to your guild vent or whatever, so if someone needs you they can just do that. (Another awesome feature, if you didn't look at that post above, is calling people with RL phones like Skype can do! Hehe, I can imagine people getting a call "Why aren't you at the raid!" etc etc :P)
And yes, Vivox will record your conversations, I remember the Vivox spokesperson said that they would have your conversation archived for like 74 hours or something small(ish) like that. So they aren't going to have some archive of your conversations, but at the same time most companies dealing with privacy issues are more then happy to give up info to the government, so I'm not so sure. But the vivox dude said this was so that they could get real evidence against people that are harrasing or soliciting minors with their technology. (Not really sure how I feel about this)
Great, give that feature to L2! I will make second job then - being paid by chinese farmer's sellers to speak their phrases for shops(TM). I can speak a little russian too ... or give that accent if you wish, too :)
Speak their phrases for shops is registered trademark of me so that noone steals my idea ;)

To be honest, those "features" sound like things no one will ever use.
Voice Mail? Uh.. yeah ok. Thats a negative ghost rider.
Calling in on my cell phone? Seriously... this game eats up enough of my real life.
As to Guild members joining PUG's, your still under the massive "assumption" that people will actually use this thing in organized guilds. I can state quiet clearly my guild wont.. ever. We use Vent, we are perfectly happy with it, we use it for multiple games to communicate.
