Well, I just started playing and I like playing characters like Paladins usually, so when I saw a Paladin was available here I decided on it right away. But I don't really know anything about the game at all.
How should I build my character, so that it's effective?
What's the best way to make money?
What's the best way to gear up to this class?
And what are the best places to level up?
I've done enough research to know I can't be a Paladin right away. That I start as a little human and then upgrade, then upgrade again to Paladin. So I know that much. It's the exact details that escape me, despite my reading.
Basically I like pve and pvp both quite well in other games. No preference. I don't need to excel in either area. Just as long as I don't feel completely useless, and have fun.
For that matter, is there any recommended reading in regard to this class?
Thank you for any help in advance.
Edit.. Eh, just pretend you're talking to someone that knows absolutely nothing about anything, especially not acronyms where this game is concerned..
well theres the raid build, and the Meatshield build, and the PVP build.
raid build, is a weapon with the "Focus" ability, Meatshield is the one with "Health" ability, and PVP means carry a bow.
making money with the paladin is fairly easy. use the manor system to farm materials and sell at fair prices. youll amass a great amount of materials.
Heavy armor - Full plate in C grade (level 40-52), Doom Heavy in B grade (52-61), and really the A grade sets will show what build youve spoken for. Nightmare = attack build, Dark crystal = Defense oriented, Majestic = siege build. tallum just not for you.
Weaponry, 1h sword has great Ability choices but Blunts can work just as good.
levelling is going to be a matter of what you want to spend. spend money with potions, soulshots, and such - you can solo in hard places, but with helper buffs, heals, youll spend less and level a bit slower.
always take an Elven elder, or Prophet to help you level.
1-19: Bronze with whatever the top NG is. Doesn't matter, maybe a Falchion around Talking Island. I always liked the Golems up north.
20-39: Clan Oath, Brigandine Heavy, some random D weapon. I went 2-handed since I was poor at the time. I generally go up to 28 outside of Dion, 29-31 at the outskirts of Cruma (North of Dion), 32-33/34? Execution Grounds, then Death Valley. Or was it those Stakatos near the middle of Cruma Swamp. It's been a while so my list is pretty jumbled, sorry.
40-51: Full Plate armor if you can. Any sword with an SA of Focus, preferably a Samurai Longsword. Alligator Island will be your friend here. Maybe Sea of Spores. North of Ivory Tower for the higher 40s, low 50s.
52-60: Blue Wolf Heavy for the +3 Strength. Overenchanted Keshanberk with Focus since Damascus' are stupidly overpriced. I'm drawing a blank here since I catacombed my way through most of this, but at the higher 50s all the way to even 65 you can stay at Forsaken Plains.
A grade is a long while so I won't go into that. To repeat a few things already said, manor is great for materials which you can sell to those who have the patience to craft (not me). Personally not my favorite method, since it's slow and tedious, but it gets the job done when you need the inital boost in income to actually start playing with the market.
Anyways, goodluck affording the stuff. Too bad it isn't CT2 yet, since it'd be a snap to get to 61 if it was. They practically give you free equipment
Paladin is a great choice. There isn't much DPS available unless you do soemthing unconventional (like me :)), however, there is lots to lean back on, and you'll hardly ever die in PvE, even at very high levels. I think last time I died was in 2007.
Just 1 think for Spunik that always say craps, you can wear all heavy armors at A grade, depends your setup
And tallum is GREAT cuze you do more damage, your skills regen faster, for big damages(we are still tanks through) or for Rift farming (over 60 by using banish undead as it regen faster)
In pvp, I love tallum as you can stun / bah / root ... more
Ps : I m soon to be 78 and I prefered to drop 150 fire on my weap than get IC set

you have an unconventional paladin. good for you.
whats your point ?
by the way: the "craps" i talk were started other people.
If effective means good levelling...

Don't waste your money on NG armor, use your newbie one or Kamael quest one. If its defense (together with newbie VR buff) is not enough for you till at least lvl 30, you are hunting on wrong mobs.

It's more of a quality-of-life type of thing I guess. You can certainly use the Wooden set - I just listed whatever I thought was best for each Grade level :(
people who are constant re-rollers look at the bronze set as an investment over multiple toons.
i am SURE someone somewhere has a bronze set available for the Original Poster for free.
ChuChuLovely, tell us what server youve begun to play on and chances are someone will hook you up either with gear, or with groups. hey - maybe even a clan.
Thanks everyone, I'm almost to fifteen now. I did get the wood set from the kamael quest. It's been working. And I've been using the coupons the newbie guide gave me and using the sword I got from the first one I turned in and been making good use of the buffs. I've been trying to follow the advice that I actually understood, and people on the server I chose ( Hindemith) have also been very helpful.
Spudnik, thanks for the suggestion, but I'm so close to 20 now that I don't think it matters. The stuff the NPCs have provided so far has been so useful that I haven't had to buy any gear at all so far.
Thanks again everyone for the advice. I have a long road ahead of me. But I think these various suggestions will make it much easier. :)
