definitely has to be. considering theres now 11 servers with the new addition of luna, each can have a max population of 6k players if im not mistaken. thats only 66k people in L2 na and euro. even if u count since op i would really wonder if it even got close to 1m
well it counts all units sold think of how many additions to the game there is and people buy those ediitions for the perks that come with it, its another unit sold.
WoW never does that so they dont sell anymore units.

Id be interested to see how everquest was not no.1 if it wasnt (didnt look at list) they had good 5-6 expansions u had to buy before everyone started quitting :P had a huge player base
This is number of account there have ever been. This doesn't compare to WoW, since thats current active accounts. Blizzard has sold/made way more accounts than 10 million in the years its been active.

So its probably second, with L2 being third.
I HIGHLY doubt WoW's numbers are any more legit then NCSofts. These numbers are impossible to verify anyways.
If you think L2 has a lot bots you haven't played WoW lately.. try be in general chat there, spam in shout every 5 seconds, spam in PM's every minute. That's just 1 server, and not counting the huge amount in instances/XP areas. L2 is in no way unique and if you played other games the amount of bots is actually not that high in terms of density.
What suprises me is that expansion pack for WoW only sold 3.5M. that must have been a great blow if they have 10M accounts active.
That's pretty normal for any game that has 'expansions'. Each successive expansion tends to sell less than the game/pack before it. Which is why 'special' versions of games that include the updates are usually fairly popular with FPS games. The combining of the two gets people who didn't play the original to buy the 'full pack' easier than trying to get them to buy each seperately.

Uhm yeah they are, they've BOTH announced their numbers, the difference is that WoWs numbers are current active subscribers, while L2 are the total number of accounts there have ever been created in the game (regardless of how many are active). Heck if the game just had 1 player they could still say "L2, a game enjoyed by 17 million players worldwide"

Also the BC expansion numbers only includes the people who have actually bought it as a box, not those who upgraded to it through the blizzard webpage.

I doubt "current Active Subscribers"
WoW has just as much "subscriptions sold" info as LineageII does..
I agree with Judas. Why do people take news provided by marketing departments serious anyways. Blizzard aint some geeky tech person who gives you honest information, its a huge commercial company, just like NC. Both news should be taken with the same grain of salt.
(I'm more interested in the sources of the article - I guess it's impossible to know the real # sold due to the only one knowing this is not impartial)

Maybe they are persistantly lying, but even if so by a far margin (and lets say WoW does it more than L2) WoW still has way more active subscribers than L2 has, way way more.
The very fact that its mentioned as the "all accounts that have ever been made" number makes it hugely suspect compared to any other MMO's numbers.

WoW doesn't really announce "subscriptions sold" data that I am aware of, it would be a redicilously high number though.
Current active subscribers.. my [censored].
Blizzard has persistantly been announcing their numbers, maybe you feel they're lying, but just like with L2, there are ways to verify the numbers to a fair degree.
Unless you mean to say that WoW is such a vastly superior game that noone really leaves it, then WoWs "active accounts ever made" surpasses L2's by a a lot.
But even in the end, 3rd place would still be pretty good.
If you look at the sheer number of servers in WoW, though, it is telling. I mean that list is HUGE. And most all of those servers have heavy population.. I don't know what "heavy" is for WoW, but I'm assuming it is in that typical mmo ballpark of 4000-8000 online.
WoW is also a lot younger compared to L2; that's why you can't really compare these two like that atm. Especially since (this is just an unconfirmed rumour) 1 Korea's server = all our combined in terms of players.
In the end it's two companies trying both to look good. Can't blaim them, but can't really derive much from it other then both companies have (had) a good sale.
look at xfire stats wow is way ahead on the 1 spot lineage 2 is on 28 or something. But it should not matter for you, no idea why ppl talk about such topics. What matters is what YOU like to play, not some numbers.
Worldwide, L2 is far Larger than WoW. The reason people don't see it here is essentially 99.9% on these forums don't account, nor have any idea how massive L2 is in the Asian countries. Yes, WoW is bigger in most of our eyes, because we simply deal with it more in the European and United States Spectrum, I can assure you that most of the people have not the slightest clue how massive L2 is on the Asian Market.

Maybe because more than 90% of Xfire's 10m users are from the US smart***.
6 million in asia 2 mil in Na and about the same in europe.
L2 has 1 million active accounts worldwide
L2 is still number 2 for paid mmorpgs. I really do not see the appeal to WoW played it but never enjoyed it. I do not think WoW reports their numbers correctly though, because I checked and even though I have not paid for the game in about 3 years, it still shows my account as active awaiting subscription fee.
So if that is the case then every account ever made as long as it is not deleted is consider active artifically inflating there numbers.
Reason i say that if you track Wow's subcriptions they HAVE NEVER SEEN A DIP OF EVEN 1 account, that is not econimically possible. According to WoW's number 1 in 660 have an active account with Blizzard in the world. Now take into account that over 3 billion people in the word live below the poverty line (living on less then 2 dollars a day) make that 1 in 360 people have a WoW account. Now take out the children under the age of 5 worldwide, you have to reduce it another 800 million. Some may also be under the poverty line so lets use 400 mil.
So now its 1 in 320 people have a WoW account. Finally there is Africa since africa has very limited internet access in most countries and neither WoW or L2 regularly maintain servers in the region you have to take out that whole population. Which is about 922 million people, say more then half 600 million live under poverty. Reduce it another 322 million people
So in the end you have 1 in every 290 people worldwide have a WoW account, some how that just does not seem realistic to me. 10 million active accounts seem a lot.
After logging in to Age of Conan last night as a Herald of Xotli, I spread my flames of the demon far and wide, sowing the seeds of destruction...
Only bad thing about AoC is that I can't play with my European friends, I totally hate that, after being with L2 for years. Seriously, where's the "globalization."
Well, thats being sacrificed for marketting and localization. (Not because of language or arrogance issues as Ashane claims).
Not sure if you can now that its released, but other than that, you might be able to play in Europe with a European account (just make one), though if you want to play both places you'll need 2 accounts then. (if possible to do)

There's a site called warcraft realms that monitors wow us and eu server population. Last i checked there wow had about 6-7m active players. That was when they announced 10m.
Lineage was released April 27, 2004 in NA, and WoW was released November 23, 2004...so WoW is like 6 months younger than L2...you consider this "a lot"?
Who really cares about these numbers anyways? Unless you own stock or work for them, as long as your servers are up and getting updates be happy. Be happy your not a Shadowbane player (complete server wipes and resets) or The Sims Online player (totally shut down).

hmm, well if that other chart was showing the peak logged in ppl and thats around 800k its not impossible there is 10m active account, altough i do think its unlikely.
but i find it kinda funny that L1 and L2 have about as many active accounts still :P and L2 have just once been above L1 in that.
Just google warcraft realms, it's the first one. Not sure what kind of info you're looking for so i'll just let you browse the site.
Well
1. It relies on submitted data, so not really any accurate picture of the total sum, which the site even admits.
2. The only 6 million number I could find was the 6 million characters, which is something else.
If i understand correctly, the census addon uses the /who command and analyses results to get the server population. It basicly does /who a-z, /who aa-ab, /who aaa-aab, etc...
Data might be outdated but i woudn't call it innacurate.
