A Scroll of Escape isn't instant. So if you think you can wisk yourself away from running from a monster....They will beat you to death as you attempt to escape.
The town guards will not save you as you run into town followed by a train of monsters, they will only laugh and point :)
If you wonder where everyone is (incase there aren't many around the starter villages):
Most people do the 1-20 in a day or maybe two.
Then move on to Dion town mostly. Might be people in Gludin too.
There you will meet more other players.
Giran is the most populated town on many servers cause it's the natural commerce place.
Hope you have fun, and don't be affraid to ask. Some things are easier than they appear to be, most things arent :p
I've found that my MP is a serious factor in my ability to grind efficiently. As of now, I have a very difficult time sustaining my mana, without taking what seems to be a lifetime to sit and regen.
Is there something I'm missing in this equation, or is that the way the cookie crumbles?
Make sure to turn on your 'walk' and to kill monsters that you can one/two shot kill that also drop the herbs (preferably mana ones for you). Chances are you will still need to sit and regen but prolly not as much as you did beforehand hopefully.
all mages tend to rely a bit heavily on mana until later levels.
and even then 2 of the pure mages can sustain Mana, while 2 others are pretty gimped for regen.
by the way, the 2 that are pretty gimped for regen are the elf mage (referred to commonly as Spellsinger, abbreviated SPS) and the Human Mage (referred to as Sorcerer(ess) abbreviated Sorc).
oddly enough, one of the more superior end game mages is the Spellsinger :/ go figure.
I have another one (and many many more) for you, as far as my Elven Mystic is concerned... should I go wizard or oracle?
I like playing all types of characters. In the past I've been the main tank, healer, and most recently nuker (with my warlock). I want to play a class that others will find useful even if said class is difficult to lvl.
Seeing as how Komanche is only lvl 12, I don't mind rerolling to a new race/class if its in my best interest!
Stick to your Kamael and go with the flow on that toon.
play what you find fun, and with the Kamael thats an easy thing to do; theres alot of flexibility for a Soulbreaker to be DD, debuffer, buffer, and assist puller.
there are other better DD, and other more capable pullers, but the Kamael Soulbreaker is by far the best Debuffer. useful in any party.
Well, surprise: I disagree with Spud. I would go with Elven Oracle if you like a healer.
Elven Oracle -- later Elven Elder -- is a lot of fun, very versatile and especially needed at the higher levels of the game.
1-20 you can windstrike mobs pretty easily, and once you hit 20, go to the Execution grounds and start at the bottom levels and work on the Undead mobs (Strains and ghouls) with your Disrupt Undead.
On the 2nd level, once you hit your 30s, i believe, go up the stairs, stay away from the trees (just root them and move away from them), but go after the Neers (undeads) and the strains; you can one-shot them.
its not easy to solo as an EE tho. its a specialised build, and i think the OP sems like the kind of person to log in at arbitrary times, on arbitrary toons, and play whatever goes around. solo/grouped.
given the rather easy dependence on grouping and the not-so-easy-ness of actually FINDING a PUG in for a leech EE ... no, i rather think the OP would like the solo when he cant find a group (as a SB) , then when he DOES find one, he can tag into ANY type of group (nuker, melee, archer) and find a use.
dont forget, youre telling an EO to solo. thats a LOT of downtime. he would have LESS downtime as an Wizard with a manapony.
It's not really a lot of downtime -- certainly not as much as an SPS, who requires so much mana -- as I can attest having just pushed an EE thru our academy.
Don't forget, the herbs drop abundantly in the areas for those levels... and there are newbie buffs (which absolutely rock).
I found catacomb groups at 20+, and found plenty of raid boss groups from 20-40. If there was no one on to party with and couldn't find a pick up group, I soloed as mentioned above.
And I guess it just depends on preference. A wizard is good. A healer is good. A healer is more conducive to the party structure than a wizard, unless he goes Elemental Summoner and gets into mage parties at the later levels.
It's just my opinion :) I guess there's no doubt I lean towards the healer side. I just LOVED my EE. I've seriously considered making it my 2nd sub as well, but I really want a summoner class.
Wearing robes will increase your MP a little.
Fire a shot and run back a bit, when the skill has recharged, fire again. Sometimes there'll only be a small amount of mob HP left so you can hit it up close. This will save you one shot of MP.
Don't forget to use spirit shots. They enhance the damage you deal each shot.
Oh man, split decision....
What about the other races/classes... is there anything more desirable?
You have plenty of spare char slots to if your first decision seems wrong.
It can take ages to find your preferred char and playstyle, don't expect to get it right in 5 mins.
Elven elder is a very good class at later levels, but it will be hard to find groups early on (except maybe on Luna - new server), because there aren't that many low levels to party with. It *can* solo however, and once you hit 56 you shouldn't have a problem finding groups (depending on server population). Did you say what server you're on?

Not much for the whole mage thing myself--but I've enjoyed SpellHowler. It's not exciting or challenging or anything--you just click and *poof*, stuff dies.
I am in the same camp with the advice to "try some characters out and take your time" and then to "play what you like".
Many clans will fit you in and be supportive whether you're an orc melee, light elf summoner, or human dagger.
You go 1-20 so fast and have the 7 slots that there is no reason not to try a couple races/classes.
Thing is: You can always lvl an offensive mage (always = up to levles in range for a new player) without problems. Cause: it can solo, and it can add decent dps to a party. even more so if the party has a recharger (after lvl 30).
A healer is hard to level before lvl 40, unless you know exactly what you are doing. With that i mean money makeing for decent gear, where mobs are at which lvl, and more money making.
I too think the kamael is the best bet.
Also if you missed these quests: there are two quests that gives your toon soul- spiritshots. one at lvl 6 and one at lvl 10.
Unless you already did those i suggest you get some info on those from someone who played a kamael toon.
Using soulshots when you strike mobs gives you double damage. The shots are graded and bound to the grade of weapon that you are using. The first ones you can buy in regular grocery stores (for no grade weapons that is).
And a last tip before i go pass out in my bed. Always keep track of how much money you are making per kill versus the money spent.
If, by chance, you're into role-play at all, let me invite you to visit the Lineage 2 Role-Player's Association at www.l2rpa.org (http://www.l2rpa.org)
If not, hey, my greeting still stands. Welcome to L2! Everyone has given some good advice above, so take your time and do try to remember: This isn't a game you can "beat" in a short time, like some other nameless Juggernaut that's out there.
Thanks, I guess I just have to test the waters myself. (Although it seems that no one is mentioning any sort of tank) I'm just worried that I'm going to lvl a character that no one will want.
And wow...how do they expect you to afford weapons? Where am I going to get ~68k at such a low lvl?
Welcome to Hindemith Kamanche. If you have any questions, drop me a mail in game or pm me if Im on. We were all new once and I'm sure you have tons of questions. Verita is my main, but I've been spending a lot of time on a new toon named RosaMarie.
As far as the healer debate goes, I cannot find a healer for my lowbie soon to be warlord and it annoys me. I'm a poler, I NEED a healer. We seem to be losing the support classes and doing it fast.......just my two cents.
And wow...how do they expect you to afford weapons? Where am I going to get ~68k at such a low lvl?
Quest quest quest. Find any and all quests you can do for your lvl or a bit under where you still can get xp while you work on them. Once you do, that absolutely beat them to do death.
Avoid using the teleport system if you can avoid it to save money at the start.
Keep your materials like animal skin, iron ore, etc. to sell to other players for a higher price than what the NPCs reward.
Also in regards to items try and find out if items you come across are worth anything higher than what an NPC may warrant (given at your current lvl most drops are ebst sold to an NPC) Learn the market, there is definitely a website out there to check on your servers market prices for stuff.
Best of Luck,
Faun
Edited: Never knew a website would be censored upon typing it, go figure, so changed up my last sentence for those of you wondering ;)

That's because as a junior tank myself I wouldn't wish that on you! (lol).
As for adena. There are any # of excellent posts here about how to make adena within the game.
In general, you can "manor" (which is buying seeds, seeding a monster before you attack it, harvesting a "fruit" after the monster is killed, and then turning in the "fruit" at the manor manager for a reward--which is a basic material) even at low levels.
On my server I just rolled a lvl 10 human fighter who is in Dwarven Village (free with newbie travel tokens) in Abandoned Coal Mines seeding those mobs for Red Cobol--which has Varnish as its reward. Varnish is selling QUICKLY right now on my server for 1500+ each. For whatever reason the supply of available varnish is just low atm.
1000 varnish--1.5 million.
Don't make earning adena overly hard! Read and study and check and take notes and talk to people. It is easier than you think.
One hint--you will NEVER afford better gear from hunting alone. Never.
Good luck.

Well, that's not exactly true. You can make "money making" one part of the gameplay and if one wanted they could hunt alone and keep all the drops (such as they are) mats, adena, etc.
Or find some money quests and grind them until you drop.
OK! well I decided I like the idea of my Elven Oracle/eventual Elder the best. So I'm slowly progressing...very slowly.
In fact right at this moment I'm on the longest boat trip ever because I couldn't afford to teleport back to the elven village after failing my pet test!
Woe is me. Thanks for all the responses guys (and gals if applicable).
-Edit-
I *was* on the boat, my game crashed...so we'll see.
